  • Steroid Use in Baseball: Players - House Oversight Committee - 2005-03-17 - 185904-2-DVD - House Committee Government Reform and Oversight. Current and former Major League Baseball players testified about the use of steroids in professional baseball and other sports. Among the issues they addressed were several recent allegations of steroid use by players to enhance performance, their personal observations of steroid use in the industry, contract negotiations between players and owners over the implementation of stricter testing, and the impact of steroid use on public perceptions of the game and on youth attitudes toward steroid use. The committee called the hearings in response to Mr. Canseco's book, Juiced, in which he admitted to using steroids to enhance performance and made allegations that other players were actively engaging in the practice. Prior to the hearings Mr. Canseco had sought immunity and had suggested that he would invoke his Fifth Amendment rights if forced to testify. He did not invoke those rights at the hearing. Other players testifying denied using steroids. On August 1, 2005 Mr. Palmeiro received a ten day suspension from baseball after testing positive for steroid use. In this hearing he denied ever using steroids or performance enhancing drugs. Filmed by C-SPAN. Non-commercial use only. For more information, see www.c-spanvideo...

So if he had said anything he could have opened himself up to prosecution and that's why his lawyers told him to basically just make a complete moron of himself. Schilling didn't pull any punches though and called Jose a liar and everything. Although most of Jose's accusations probably were true at the time.

Bottom line is, people say steroids have been in the game & used by players for years. If the players felt there was no harm in using steroids & it was ok during a time in baseball when there was no policy on steroid use, then why wouldn't they come out & say, "yes I'm using or used steroids"! Well the answer is simple. Policy in place or no policy in place, players using steroids knew & have known since it's use in the game that it is & has always been wrong! Period!

Schilling seems like he always was a douche and apparently a liar, though it's funny how vehemently he calls Canseco won. Up to 5-10 players in the 19 years he's spent in baseball? Really? McGwire, Sosa and Palmeiro are like three good friends, or even three brothers. The oldest brother says one thing, and the other two just go along with whatever he says. Canseco seems the most 'eloquent' here. I guess him speaking out and exposing the huge problem makes him a villain to a lot of players of that era. Omertà seems to be as strong in MLB as it is in many professional leagues. Anytime anyone says something to rattle the establishment, he/she is scolded and called names.

Looking back on this I wasn't shocked when finding out who was and who wasn't on them besides Raffy. I remember Miguel Tejada tainted something and gave it to Raffy so Miguel wasn't caught and the blame went to Palmerio. Shady. Sosa never tested positive but had a corked bat later on. Schilling was a so so pitcher who later did okay in the postseason.
