  • The British Gold Sovereign is a good option for both coin collectors and gold coin stackers alike. The many years, varieties, mint marks and monarchs offer many options for collectors. The abundance of circulated lower quality British Gold Sovereign coins still available today also makes these coins a lower cost option for stacking gold. Demand for these coins is lower than that of modern-day bullion gold coins like the American Gold Eagle or Candian Gold Maple Leaf coins. This is due to the new factor of fractional gold coin. Also, the modern-day security features available today provide more assurance of authenticity to stackers. One further consideration is that many stackers are not fully aware of these coins as an option. In this video I give a brief overview on the history of the coin. I show a few different varieties of the coin that you may find when shopping for one and I discuss the pros and cons of stacking these coins from my perspective.

    Hi Stackers. The main point of this video isn't the British Gold Sovereign itself. This is primarily a stacking channel. So I approach things from a stacking perspective which often irates the collectors. Oh well, sorry, have a nice day. The reall point of this video is to offer you examples of less common paths to owning gold. If you want to play it safe, stay mainstream and just drive Hondas or Toyotas, the Gold Eagle, Maple, Krugerrand and other modern day fractional gold coins will suit you just fine. But if you want to drive something different, maybe something more economical, here is one of several options to consider - namely for long term holders who believe the spot price will as it has, continue to rise on dollar debasement. That is the point of the video. Just one more tool in your tool belt.

    I have half a dozen of them as a US stacker. I like variety and the history of them. I haven't tried to sell one yet... hope i don't have to. The larger online dealers will always buy them, so I'm not too worried about it. It's gold..

    I'm not sure about abroad, but in the UK, Sovereigns count as legal tender, so are therefore sales tax and capital gains tax free to buy and sell.
    They're the best fractional to buy in the UK.
    If it's for adding to you collection, I think it's worth owning one, just because of its long history. A great conversation piece.

    20 shillings would be 240 old pence(one old pound) not to be confused with the modern British pence. This was a lot of money at the time as most people were only paid a wage of two and six(30 old pence) per week. To buy a full Sovereign would have taken about 2 months wages back in the day not allowing for day to day essentials.
    Sovereigns have the advantage of lower dealer premiums and good sell back prices. 9% buy premium and usually you will get spot price and a bit when you sell. At least if you live in the UK.

    What is important to stackers is when you go to sell them you will get less than spot. For example, JM Bullion is selling Sovereigns for roughly $38 over spot and buying them back for $20 under spot for a spread of $58 or 11%. My LCS won’t buy them. They don’t have a market for them. There is a place online selling ex jewelry for $20 over spot, but the buyback is $20 under. I’d suggest buying a nice one for your collection but stacking these in the U.S. isn’t very smart IMHO.

      Thank you for sharing your experience and viewpoints on these coins. It is interaction such as this that makes this community better. You just can't fit everything on a 200+ year old coin in a YT video that the average viewer turns off around 4 to 6 minutes in. Now reading this comment I would love to add to your statement that your coin shop doesn't buy them. I live near a city, and the smaller shops pay low, if at all. But I have access to a couple coin shops that do 8 figures annually and can move them, or afford to hold them, or melt them. You do get less back, but you pay less for. It's the spread, like you mentioned, when compared to comparable weight bullion that makes the difference.

      @@floridastacker Same as the Krugerrand. And the South African 1 and 2 Rand coins minted from 61 to 82. Not surprising as the SA mint was once part of the British Empires monetary infrastructure and they simply continued using the specs for the Soverigns when they became a Republic in 61 and intruduced their own coins. Including the Krugerrand as you mentioned - in 67. In fact the old ZAR (Transvaal) Republic used the same specs for the Kruger Pond and Half Pond that they minted from 1892 until 1900.

I think a pieces liquidity should be takwn into account when buying. They are beautiful, but is there going to be a market for the piece that isn't going to screw you out of 10-13%? Im in for the long hold so i think the price doesn't matter as much if youd plan's to hold for years.

    • @floridastacker

      Anxious, yeah, the market matters. Actually, if you live in a rural area, i would add avoid. In a city such as mine with coin shops that do 8 figures annual I can move them easily. I just couldn't get everything into a video that 50% of the viewers have turned off 4 minutes in. I know you get that part. I think the longer holders benefit here. What do you think about the 20 swiss franc gold sovereigns? I got a few of them years ago because it was a lower premium option. But I heard there's not a lot of demand for them and when you go to sell your going to get well under spot for them. Now idk if this is the case because I've never had to sell them before, but it's just what I've heard from people who have.

    • @AnxiousStacker
      @AnxiousStacker 5 месяцев назад +2

      I've definitely heard that too. Not planning on selling anything any time soon but if youre holding it a while id think the price won't matter as much because you only lose value when you sell. Id also say if you were to be selling you can find someone in the community and get closer to what it's worth than taking it to a coin shop.

    • @floridastacker
      @floridastacker  5 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Jimmi. In my opinion, the reason you got them at the lower premium is because they have a smaller market than comparable modern-day bullion like the fractional gold eagle, maple, etc.. Less demand means the average coin shop has to take on more spot price risk for holding them. Coin dealers love to move items quickly as their spreads are built in giving them a profit during days of little spot price fluctuation. The longer they hold, the more risk they take of a dip or big pullback putting them in the negative. My coin shop sells them around $15 to $20 over spot and buys them back at around 98% to Spot depending on demand.

    The downside to stacking sovereigns here in Canada is that because they are not fine gold at 22kt they attract sales tax and that is 12% +/- depending on the province.! Beautiful and historically interesting though they are, its a serious stumbling block. It's the same here with Krugerrands, Eagles and all coin silver. So it goes with government, it has to be 24kt here....999 for silver. That's the way it is in the GWN and 99% of folks don't know nor care.

    Sovereigns are my favorite gold coin. I like Krugerrands and eagles too, but fractional is just better, especially as the price of gold increases. I don’t like fragile 24kt, and 1/4oz or 1/10oz eagles have ridiculous premiums. Paying those premiums is insane.
    I don’t care if the sovereign is less popular right now. I have no doubt its popularity will grow in the US. It’s not some trend of the month. They’ve been minting it since the 1400’s. It’s not going anywhere. The US mint can keep their 1/4oz eagle premiums and shove it.
