They imagined the image and made it happen with as few resources as possible. This is a lost art in and age of comparatively limitless memory where available resources are hardly a consideration..

How many colours does this computer have?
It has graphic modes of different capabilities. The mode used in this intro has wide pixels 4x1 and 16 shades of one color, grey here.

The Atari 8-bit with Antic and GTIA can display 256 colors or more with simple programming tricks. I've seen demos with over 25k colors.
