These early shows stir the nostalgia in me so much. I remember staying up late as a high school sophomore to watch this new, funny late night talk show.
Perfect. In. Every. Single. Way. Every single moment. This episode should be required viewing and listening. For everyone. It should be a part of the basic primary school curriculum, along with Shakespeare, and Perotin, The Beatles, and Durer and Andy Warhol. Thank you so much for posting this.
Since David Letterman retired, late night television has gone in the toilet! Quality TV like The David Letterman Show simply doesn't exist. Thank you for bringing this to us, the only thing that would be better would be to bring Dave out of retirement! James Brown. Larry Walters and of course Larry "Bud" Melman.......... Classic! Jay couldn't pull this off!!
@@pjom4191 Agreed, he was terrible his last few years. Turned in to a miserable old man and a political hack. Good to see these old clips to remember what once was.
James Brown was the man, what an appearance! His music was such a huge influence on so many different musicians… it cannot be overstated how important he was!
Sadly, though the stunt gained him "inner peace," it didn't last long. According to Wikipedia, he shot himself through the heart in the woods at 44 years of age.
Thanks for this. It was great to see Larry so happy. This sort of adrenaline rush, that last for weeks, even months, after the event which induces it, is great. When you wake up every day remembering what you'd experienced, and your heart starts pumping and those neurotransmitters get flowing, boy, it's just the greatest.
If ANYONE every doubted the legitimacy of Paul Shaffer .They must be taken to school by seeing this Historic Episode .The Love #jamesbrown had for Paul, Dave ,The Audience and Love Of Performing is Infectious !!!! Thanks Mr.G !
I feel like this date is wrong though. They talk about their recent Christmas show and when James brown mentions john belushi he doesn’t say anything about his death and mentions him in the present tense when this would have only been 4 short months after Johns death of the date was accurate.
I never saw this aired ( But then I was 9 years old at the time ) but James Brown tore the roof off the dump! This chife is a real bowl of Larrys. Its too bad that Larry Edwards couldn't move on and apply his tenacity to other endeavours and expanded his passion towards new and greater challenges.
For anyone interested in Larry's story, we're making a documentary about his life and flight. We found some original 35mm footage of his flight and the audio recordings. facebook.com/lawnchairpilot
Cool! I remember hearing about his as a kid, thinking it was just an urban myth because it sounded so absurd.. but lo and behold Lawnchair Larry is real :)
Area 51: Probably not for several more years. It's hard to say. There are a few interviews that we have been patiently waiting to try and line up, but it has been slow going. We could finish something good with the footage we have, but I think some of the interviews we are chasing will be worth the wait...
Brandon: That's how I first heard about Larry's story as well! Back in 2001. As I researched it, I found out Larry's story had a lot of layers. I reached out to Larry's mother, and we were able to interview her before she passed away. Before she passed, Larry's mother also gave us Larry's journal, which included test inflations dating back to 1971, a good 10 years before his flight.
James Brown once said "sex machine, well, that took me some time to come up with the lyrics, they were very intricate and well, it was some intense writing for me,""""""""""""""
Funny when the crowd booed when Dave announced that "Carmine Polosi" was being bumped at the end so James Brown could do another song. I wonder what that looked like in the green room. He had to be shaking like a leaf thinking, "I gotta follow THAT?" And I'm sure the producers had to think of a way to break it to him, but all for the best. Absolutely remarkable how the Godfather livened up that crowd. Amazing night.
. Seems like James Brown going over to the piano (28:28) was something he might not have done during the pre-show 'run-through' (if they did a run-through prior to the show), since the camera angle doesn't seem particularly good, and the piano doesn't seem to be properly mic'ed, which (I'm guessing) seems like something they would have had better prepared if they knew he might go over there to play at some point. Anybody know if musical guests ALWAYS rehearsed on any of Letterman's (NBC/CBS) shows ?? Knowing how professional Paul Shaffer is when it comes to the music, I'd be SHOCKED if that didn't happen.....at least _most_ of the time..... .
The music guest always rehearsed with the WMDB and CBS Orchestra before the taping. I don’t know if JB was an exception. I agree that Brown playing the piano was most likely not planned.
@@dongiller . Thank you !! Yeah.....got the distinct impression there was a little bit of 'surprise' there.....but, of course, the guys all rolled with it and didn't seem to miss a beat.... .
I‘m inclined to believe Larry there, somehow it seems he didn’t get around to explain the contraption properly. Imagine he would be still alive and recall his adventure in one of today’s RUclips channels dedicated to aviation/tinkering...
Why he killed him self later on one in life when he said he has “found inner peace” is because the only way to find inner peace is through God. That is the only way anyone will be happy
Was that Will on bass? I didn't watch the beginning of the show. I only realized when they only introduced the horn players. That bass playing was so great I thought James Brown brought his own guy!

Where do you go to school that Perotin is part of the primary school curriculum!?
spam I said it should be, not that it is.
You had me very excited for a moment. I was barely taught classical music in primary school, let alone early music... :-/

Bring letterman back!!!! Visiting in feb 2021! Still the best show to ever air!
This very may be the single greatest musical performance ever on late night television. Thanks Don for preserving and sharing it.
If loving every moment of this show is wrong, then I don't wanna be right.
Networ X Yeah but I think they meant just this episode with James Brown.
"I was sitting in the chair"
This man is a modern Ikarus, a true Hero in every sense of the word!

Gary Citro yes I read that sad part too:/
But, we are talking about him now, and that’s quite his achievement :)
Perfect episode, love it, ty Don.
Larry Walters has been my hero since I was a kid.

One of a scant handful of early shows where none of the guests were alive to see Dave's last broadcast.

Great fun to see James Brown leading the band here!
+ladypodtron And playing the piano too. He really was something! RIP.
Lawn Chair Larry , "He knew what he was doing ! " And he sure did :) ! Well,, maybe not the landing, but besides that he KNEW whst he was doing lol

@@Orangeflava Larry’s flight was definitely in July. The Christmas boy threw me off as well.
This was the time when watching Letterman was fun.
They should name a high school after Larry Walters. That is just the coolest thing ever.
Imagine the pilots who saw him. This is what he wanted to do and he did it. Good for him.
The part with Larry bud Melman is the funniest!

Is this the only time James Brown was on a talk show? He picked the right one!
He was on Dave’s Late Night several times and participated in Paul’s Cape Thing on Dave’s Late Show.

Larry had complete "control of the craft..." until it got caught in power lines. Still a GREAT story!
If he did that today he would be shot down by homeland security.
And so sadly Hiram Bullock is no longer with us - he was a huge part of the danger in The World's Most Dangerous Band.
Sad that Larry Walters committed suicide 10 years later.
Larry's passing was 11 years later, Oct 6 1993. But yes, very sad.
