It’s actually the opposite, with a hook and rod you’ll have the fish suffocating to death in a slow painful manner that makes somewhere around 20-30 minutes, as opposed to a spear which makes the fish bleed out quick and die really fast.

Firstly, no, its NOT illegal to kill these fish. Killing it will probably have you severely looked down upon, but youre not getting any fines or jail time. Secondly, its still probably best not to if you enjoy having your limbs. That thing'll have you amputating your legs faster than you could spear it.

If it's a Queensland grouper like some people are saying, then it'll be illegal. You can get a fine of up to $11,000 AU and three months in prison.
