@@MeditateMeHigher - I'm Thai-American so maybe now you understand why I chose Thailand. I've been to Spain and France, and most of Europe but I still prefer South East Asia. Europeans are cold and not as friendly as Thai people. It's obvious you've never been to Thailand or else you wouldn't have made that comment.

@@MeditateMeHigher You certainly don't need a fortune to retire in the South of France or Spain. Monaco, yes. Plenty of us expats in HK and SG could retire comfortably there or in our home countries but it's not everyones cup of tea. I like Europe and spend considerable time in that part of the world but Europe is becoming less attractive nowadays for a whole host of reasons.

The fact that most people's biggest expense is food not rent is a very good indicator that life is good in Thailand. In London £2,121 is your average rent....

I'm from NYC and the funny thing is I would pay NYC cost of living prices to live in Bangkok, just because Bangkok is amazing on its own and you get access to all of the amazing places in Southeast Asia. So the fact that it is just a fraction of NYC prices is a no brainer as long as you can earn $USD. That's the hard part because you can only really do that if you're a contractor in the US. You can't do it on a regular W2 job working for a company.

@@pook7274 They won't let you work for more than 20 days outside of the US as it creates tax liabilities for your employer with all of the countries you're working from. Remember, you're taxed based on where the work is done from, not where you live.

As someone who has lived in Thailand for about a decade at different stages in my life over the last 20 years: Don't be fooled with some of these guys. 700 USD *being generous* is not enough and I tell you why. a) You have visa expenses. A visa run costs you easily between 5-10k because if you are a normal adult with a job and time constraints you cant afford to take a local bus to the border and waste your time and if you have a proper visa you still need to factor in multiple entry costs, extensions etc. b) flights home - you will probably fly home once per year so that also increases your expenses by probably at least 2k USD per year. c) Lifestyle - because things are cheaper than in the west you also enjoy and spent more ( which is ok / just saying ).
Its realisitc to spend around 1000-2000 baht a day just living in Bangkok. In Chiang Mai thats probably closer to a 1000 but its not what some of these ppl tell you if you are not just starring against a wall drinking water and never ever go out

@@hago7568 i just searched it from indonesia to malaysia for example is 59 euro. It doesnt work like that man. Flying to neighboring country is cheap af, choose a direct flight, the shorter the distance is the cheaper it is. Hotels are way cheaper than rents in developed countries. I live in NL and our rent costs 3x more than living in a modest hotel/airbnb in developing countries AND it is cheaper to live in luxurious hotels in those countries than renting a small bedroom in NL xD
Idk which website u use to book tickets and hotels. U might be doing something wrong or u talk out of ur ass.

Can someone explain to me the appeal of living in Chiang Mai? I feel like if you go to Thailand, it would be a waste to not live on the coast like Phuket or Krabi and miss out on all those beautiful beaches. I can see why you would live in Bangkok if you had work there or for the nightlife but I cant see it for Chiang Mai.

True. I spend over $7,000 a month in California. Single male, no going out, no drinking and rent a single room studio inside a garage. I do eat out but very simply, tacos and habit burger. I don't need to watch it to know Americans and citizens of high-income countries are jacking up the prices for everyone else! The most modern rooms should be $350/400 per month and that's even an unaffordable price for locals. Stay low and don't destroy the balance for locals
