Florianópolis can be anything but remote. The island has half a million inhabitants and is the capital of the state of Santa Catarina and can be considered a metropolis, since the only thing that divides it from the mainland cities is a bridge.
Came in the comments for this. From Collins Dictionary: Remote areas are far away from cities and places where most people live, and are therefore difficult to get to.
The concept is REMOTE WORK, could be anywhere including a big city, a farm, a different country or even your home. You only need to be remote from the company’s office. Florianopolis is not a Metropolis, it’s a medium size city according to Brazil standards. Only have 500.000 people. Florianopolis is one of the safest cities in Brazil. Floripa have but more than 40 beaches, some of them you can only go by walking trail or by boat. It’s an awsome place for outdoor sports. With young, beautiful and friendly habitants, you can enjoy not only the nature, buy many parties. Thanks god it’s not well know for remote workers, still not crowded as Canguu in Indonesia.
I'm American and also living in Brazil. I love it and due to the 5:1 currency exchange, my American salary allows me to have a extremely comfortable lifestyle. My apartment condo is 5 minutes from the beach and everything else I need is walking distance away. Just keep in mind if you're not in some kind of nomad hub, Portuguese will be necessary. I speak the language well and married a native who does not speak a single word of English.
I'm assuming you are in Rio? Is Crime and violence an issue there, like is there always some bag of shit trying to rob you on the beach or in the street ?
@@becraftcorey I'm Brazilian, and I don't recommend anyone living in Rio, most Brazilians from other cities and states in the country have the opinion that Rio is only for visiting on vacation, the city is very dangerous. Few neighborhoods are actually habitable, and you still have to be careful at night.
@@becraftcorey Hello, in terms of safety, yes, Sao Paulo is safer than Rio, it is also a bigger city, it is our work capital, people are there to study and make money, but there is still a lot to see, the coastline is also beautiful. For any and all tourists I recommend going to the South of Brazil, it is the safest and most developed region, Florianopólis, the city in the video is in the south, there are also other good cities like "Curitiba" "Gramado" In terms of beaches, the South is not very strong, the beaches are beautiful but the water is a little cold, I live in the northeast, here the beaches are more famous and visited by people from all over the country, I consider most of the cities here safe to visit, like "Fortaleza" "joão Pessoa"

9:20 - whoa.. no meetings!? I am also a developer working remotely, and my work consists of 80% of meetings and 20% of being angry that I have so many meetings. Then after "work" I need to find some time to do my actual work. This job is a trap. It made me almost dead inside. I hope I will find a better job this year. Already searching.
Very cool. In my early 40s in about 2016, I retired and had some connections (completely legal) in South America that I visited. I was mainly in Medellin and saw the early versions of the digital nomad which sparked interest in the phenomenon. Most were tech workers. When I went broke and went back to work I remembered the nomads and got into tech. Still hoping to be a digital nomad, but everyone in America now wants to be a digital nomad in software engineering or in data analytics or cybersecurity. I think you would have to build a successful freelance biz or find an increasingly rare accommodative employer to make it work. For now, I am stuck at a corporate complex living the grind, on call. Cheers to the successful digital nomads.
Connections that were (completely legal)? What in the world is that even supposed to mean? I highly doubt that someone would read your post and wonder if your connections in South America were legal. Maybe it's late, and I am tired, but that was bizarre to read.
An interesting observation that holds some merit. I can tell that here in DC, the rage appears to be cybersecurity and data analytics for a six figure salary. You could totally write a book about your life's experiences about the fact that you retired at 40, lived abroad, but had to return back to the regular 9-5. A lesson for the aspiring digital nomads like myself.
I assume you are young. If I were in your shoes, I would make sure to max out every year the tax deferred savings plans (IRA, 401k, etc.) and also consider a taxable personal account. Eschew spending large amounts of money on youthful follies like expensive cars (most girls, if that's your thing, don't care that you drive a Honda anyways). Consider investing in the indexes, long term, like $SPY, $QQQ, and $DIA. Keep some money aside for "crazy investments" like bitcoin in 2013 that have risk profiles with asymmetric payouts. I am personally experimenting with buying leveraged ETFs and selling low-delta weekly option premium against them. When I get "called out," my move usually involves just selling a put at the exact strike price. Hopefully, this works out long term -- hoping/expecting to retire again in 5-10 years. I would also say to avoid blowing money on common youthful follies like expensive vehicles (only your bruhs care, anyways) and spending $40+ a day on lunch and coffees. Also, other common hot careers of the moment include cloud (my company paid for a class and of the 250 grads many w/ certs, only an estimated 20-30 got related jobs) and AI/ML engineering. @@thelifewithnate
Maybe it is bizarre -- I don't know. This is the YT comments section, so who cares? I can say, however, Colombia remains a very corrupt country. The gangsters are now business people. I believe illegal gold mining in the jungles remains a bigger illicit cash cow than narcotics. @@lostandlooking
Great video, to let you know I just retired to Brazil from USA, the truth is that There is never any culture of wealth gathering or wealth creation to keep multiplying your money in any country that lacks an investment value Instead of saving money in the bank or working to pay bills. This means, if you want to be successful you must be an investor. I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life too 🙏🙏🙏
you've remind me of what someone once said "The mind is the man, the poor is in it and the rich is it too". This sentence is the secret of most successful investors. I once attended similar and ever since then been waxing strong financially, and i most tell you the truth..investment is the key that can secure your family future.
Starting early is the best way of getting ahead to build wealth, investing remains a priority. I learnt from my last year's experience, i am able to build a suitable life because I invested early ahead this time
Hi Rafa! Love your vids! I wish though one of your questions was how they got their jobs in the first place? Especially the designer girl from Ireland since I’m in the same industry. Thanks!
Hey Rafa, nice to meet you. I’ve watched some of your RUclips videos about digital nomad life, they were very useful, keep on with the good work. If you also happen to be in Thailand or Southeast Asia let’s meet up for a coffee. And if you have any connections or potential clients who need a Thai-English translator, please send them my way, I’d be happy to help. Thank you 🙏
All I know is that I'm envious that they earn in dollars and pounds. That basically makes some of them rich in Brazil. I wish I had any knowledge of these professions.
You don't really need knowledge, the last one sound clueless... It is mostly the diplomatic background you have, for instance, with my nationality I don't have access to Digital nomad visa or Working Holiday Visa... Even though I speak 3 languages and have a bunch of qualifications
Are you a nutricionist? You can work online for brazilians living in USA for example and earn dollars. You don't need any new knowledge, only adjust your comunication to people living in another places. I work as psychologist online for brazilians and I started using faceads.
I'm German and I also live in Brazil in the city of (see the city in #joaopessoa) Joao Peso, the capital of Paraiba. A beautiful city, tropical beaches and closer to Europe and the United States as it is in the north. Here everything is much more affordable than the cities of Rio Janeiro or Sau Paulo
Hi Rafa, very nice video 👍 One possible question to ask in a future video, is how to they do to keep focused on their work? It would be really interesting to know their tips on having the discipline to being productive and deliver the best work daily
Right.. Same.. She mentioned a Remote Island in Brazil I thought about Ilha Grande.. Florianopolis is not remote At all.. Place have even Airports around.. 😅
@@william.miller.3000 its a wrong use of the word. A "remote island" is an island of difficult access, which Florianópolis isn't. "remote from their countries" makes no sense.

Hey creator, you should focus your attention in the video that gave 1.3 Million view. Maybe you can make another similar but this would be showing their lifestyle like literally going out with them and they showing you their routine while you ask the questions thru the video. It would be nice to watch something like that.
I have a few Questions: How do taxes work when tax time comes? How does the payment get handled (go to a US account, Brazil)? Some details on the specifics would be great.
Muito bom esse video Rafa! Lembro de te ver nos corredores da FEA kkk. Muito massa sua jornada e canal, inspirador de verdade! Acompanhando e torcendo pelo seu sucesso ✌🏼🔥
This series is reallly interesting, thanks for sharing! 🙏 I'm a software engineer I would love to try this, but here in Europe seems so difficult to have full remote jobs now even as developers. The company I work for now is trying to push back in the office more, now we need to go 50% of the time. Hopefully I will manage too to find something remote and do few months per year from around the world 🤗
To answer everybody: 1) to avoid nomad burnout indeed I would like to do only 3-4 months per year, while staying in my homebase in Europe the other time 2) I changed few jobs and so languages, I did Java, python, RoR, AngularJS, C++ 3) I did a standard route: CS engineering degree and applied for jobs, after getting the first experience is easier to find more jobs even though nowadays the market is more competitive
@@zarkarkas how do you havndle love and freindships.... i bet you get lonely not having any real connections those 4 months a year. going to cafes alone... restaurants alone. and you just being alone people watching gets boring. very hard to make real freinds. maybe you hire an escort or have a short fling with a local whore, maybe pay to get massages. and when you move back to homebase any women interested in you wants to get another guy that's closer to her.unless you be her sugar daddy and she just gives you attention for money and gifts. now the long distance got you heartbroken..
So incredibly crazy big salaries for employees, especially those who work remotely!! Amazing! With this money, you can hire 5 excellent developers from Eastern Europe, and they will work just as well! I don't understand employers at all!..

Remote island? Florianópolis is a big island and the capital of the state of Santa Catarina one the most popular states in Brazil with millions of people
I still feel these guys continue to have the money support of other siblings from abroad, taking advantage of the wide currency differences, otherwise they wouldn´t make it to live as they describe it, to say the least.
having known a few friends who live like this, it is true that a lifestyle that involves living in a hostel with belongings totaling a mere backpack does welcome a few bad apples. also, once you go past the making money on your laptop at the beach trope, it's not that glamorous. see the Israeli guy in the beginning of the interviews, for example. he mentions he can afford a private room sometimes. I can't imagine having to LIVE in a hostel room with bunkbeds, let alone travel like that for more than a week. No car, no wardrobe with nice clothes. The only way i see this working out, is having a remote job, keeping your rent etc. low as possbile in your own country, so that you can go on long working vacations to places like in the video.
@@orkunvemosi They live in a hostel because they want to. I earn 1000Euros that's nothing compared to them and I live on 800-900 euros in Copacabana in a small apartment 2 blocks from the beach. My wife's brother moved there with his wife and two kids! They're Russians, so living as expats as well ☺️ i didn't know that there is digital nomad community building up there☺️
Love the content Rafa, but Floripa being the Capital of Santa Catarina State and being so close to the continent, plus its so big, is it considered a remote island?
there are some tiny islands around Florianopolis that we can call as remote islands, maybe she was in one of those (those islands are still in florianopolis territory)
Hei Rafa, you make very nice videos!!! It would be interesting to see videos about practical matters, such as how they pay taxes, how they transfer money, etc. Success
A great follow up question for future videos like this, is if they can show the work they do. It would be interesting to see what the bar of entry is, at least when it comes to the visual skills. I hope that makes sense!
Recommend looking into some of our bigger cities if you want to find a job around here. I live in São José dos Campos which I think is a pretty good place with a good enough local job market without being too big like São Paulo, although I think public transportation is really lacking in terms of planning here. You could look into some other big cities like São Paulo, Campinas etc. I personally like the state of São Paulo’s countryside which has relatively cheaper cost of living, but wouldn’t live there without having myself prepared financially. If you are thinking more about working remotely from your home country, you are probably going to be well-off regardless of the place you choose to live. You could look into some bigger places in the northeast like Fortaleza or Salvador or go south to Florianópolis, Curitiba, Balneário Camboriú etc. Southeast/South Brazil generally is a bit safer and has a bigger job marketplace, but that again will depend in which state and city you choose. Tip: Regardless of where you live, I don’t think you’ll be able to get by with English unless you find someone who is okay with translating stuff for you or just choose to isolate yourself which I really do not recommend since you will probably lose some cool life experiences and possible friendships, so learning the language will definitely be necessary, you don’t need to be fluent though, just enough to get by.
Remote island, enlouqueceu? capital do estado com uma regiao metropolitana de mais de 1 milhao de pessoas. vc sabe o que significa remote island? Remote island seria se fosse Fernando de Noronha por exemplo.
Dope video, I wish I could do this, I went to uni for getting a degree as business manager but here in Colombia that doesn’t pays off. My best skill is my English, I’m solid with tec, and some office platforms, I have an idea of PS, AE and I think I have some good taste 😊 drop a tip for me pls

Terrific job with this video. Loved it! What are the best online resources to find remote work that would allow you to travel?
Great video, to let you know I just retired to Brazil from USA, the truth is that
There is never any culture of wealth gathering or wealth creation to keep multiplying your money in any country that lacks an investment value Instead of saving money in the bank or working to pay bills.
I learnt from my last year's experience, i am able to build a suitable life because I invested early ahead this time
exactly! That's my major concern and what kind of profitable business or investment can someone do with the current rise in economic downturn
yeah forex trading investment is really profitable but the problem is having a trustworthy expert to guide you through the process
Thanks for the amazing information, it's really helpful to me too 🙏🙏🙏
Two other examples of remote islands in Brazil, in addition to Florianópolis: Vitória and São Luis (Maranhão)......
Amei o vídeo, Rafa
nice i didn't know there are many digital nomads in Floripa! I will head there in the future. RN I'm living in the South of Brasil
Thank you 🙏
Can u do a video on the gentrification digital nomads cause in the country ?
Thanks for putting in the effort to produce this and for asking the right questions. Keep 'em coming!
One day, i would love to be able to live this digital nomad life
Hi Rafa, very nice video 👍 One possible question to ask in a future video, is how to they do to keep focused on their work? It would be really interesting to know their tips on having the discipline to being productive and deliver the best work daily
My mind bugged when I saw the "remote island" is just Florianopolis... I was curious about which remote island would be.
Florianópolis is a island that most of the people look for work remotely and enjoy the life
@@diiegonapoleao2 I totally understood that, but she didn't say "work remotely" the title is "remote island"
Right.. Same.. She mentioned a Remote Island in Brazil I thought about Ilha Grande.. Florianopolis is not remote At all.. Place have even Airports around.. 😅
It’s remote Island from their Countries. Please don’t confuse “remote” with “unexplored” or “wild” places.
@@william.miller.3000 its a wrong use of the word. A "remote island" is an island of difficult access, which Florianópolis isn't. "remote from their countries" makes no sense.
I also need my quiet time, just like the last person. I’m more of an introvert. Even though I’m very comfortable talking to people, I have to have a break.
Hey creator, you should focus your attention in the video that gave 1.3 Million view. Maybe you can make another similar but this would be showing their lifestyle like literally going out with them and they showing you their routine while you ask the questions thru the video. It would be nice to watch something like that.
10:07 bro was nervous af!! I feel you broh..
Is Floripa a remote island???
just no bro 🤣
I am always curious if the people who you interview got any financial cushion before moving abroad if they are enterpreneurs / freelancers.
Loving this kind of content! Thank you for inspiring new potential digital nomads :)
Thank you!!! I'm glad I'm inspiring :) you can do it!
Thank you for these
I have a few Questions:
How do taxes work when tax time comes?
How does the payment get handled (go to a US account, Brazil)?
Some details on the specifics would be great.
You're a great interviewer - very kind and seemingly easy to speak with!
Thank you so much!! :)
Bro Floripa is NOT a remote island LOL. In fact is a big city and capital of Santa Catarina state. Why the h*ll did you assume its remote 🤣
This series is reallly interesting, thanks for sharing! 🙏 I'm a software engineer I would love to try this, but here in Europe seems so difficult to have full remote jobs now even as developers. The company I work for now is trying to push back in the office more, now we need to go 50% of the time. Hopefully I will manage too to find something remote and do few months per year from around the world 🤗
it gets old after a year or two... good luck, most nomads dont do it longer than 2 yeras.
Which language?
Hey man I'm interested in software engineer, How Can I get a job like your, I wanna be a nomade too
To answer everybody: 1) to avoid nomad burnout indeed I would like to do only 3-4 months per year, while staying in my homebase in Europe the other time 2) I changed few jobs and so languages, I did Java, python, RoR, AngularJS, C++ 3) I did a standard route: CS engineering degree and applied for jobs, after getting the first experience is easier to find more jobs even though nowadays the market is more competitive
Grazie mille :)
Ilha remota foi ótimo! 😂
lol
There are some cities where you could not live with what i make but definitely you can live in floripa with 1000€
My wife's brother moved there with his wife and two kids! They're Russians, so living as expats as well ☺️ i didn't know that there is digital nomad community building up there☺️
That's so nice! I hope they are enjoying here! It's beautiful... and yeah, the digital nomad community is growing a lot here :)
Great video, we need more
Hi Rafa, Please make a video with the software company or AI start-up founders/co-founders
@@levihrios no, she was not
Hei Rafa, you make very nice videos!!! It would be interesting to see videos about practical matters, such as how they pay taxes, how they transfer money, etc. Success
Thank you!! I will definitely do videos with more practical questions :) stay tuned ❤
Great video! I am shocked how much these digital nomads earn monthly, they all will be millionaires in no time.
Some of these salaries are way more than i expected. Nyc salaries in Floripa can lead to a decadent life.
A great follow up question for future videos like this, is if they can show the work they do. It would be interesting to see what the bar of entry is, at least when it comes to the visual skills. I hope that makes sense!
Excellent video suggestion 🎉
That´s was an amazing interviews
thank you ❤❤
Great vídeo content ! if you have the opportunity could interview more mature nomads as well ? Keep up with these series is great 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Love it, definitely post more of these! 😄
thank you girl!! will do 😍
thank you for this video
Thanks for sharing, I am also in Brazil the living cost is chill mainly if you are getting paid in USD. Keep it up.
You have great content and purpose, but I also sense that you are exposing scammers and they don't even know it hahahah
Im a graduated graphic designer, living in the Netherlands. I would love to live in Brazil for a time, how do I go about it?
Florianopolis is far from remote island since it is the state capital. But nice content. Love there.
This is a great video, my girlfriend and I are about to make the journey abroad... RUclips is our money maker!
here u go, new subscriber
Great vid. I’m excited to make some travel vlogs in Brazil and now flori is top of the list
amazing !! Thank you for inspiring iI want to be a digital nomad
Thank you!!! So glad my video inspired you :)
A capital de Santa Catarina é uma ilha remota?
I would love to hear a follow up story if most of these Tech related nomads kept or lost their contracts post-layoffs 2023?
£6000 as a remote freelance graphic designer, what!?! 3 month course and a few years experience.. I'm actually lost for words
Maybe pre-tax income
Also, as a freelancer you're paid per project so "per month" is a bit of a gray line.
I'm Brazilian living in Spain, I really loved your channel 💙
Remote island, enlouqueceu? capital do estado com uma regiao metropolitana de mais de 1 milhao de pessoas. vc sabe o que significa remote island? Remote island seria se fosse Fernando de Noronha por exemplo.
Dope video, I wish I could do this, I went to uni for getting a degree as business manager but here in Colombia that doesn’t pays off.
My best skill is my English, I’m solid with tec, and some office platforms, I have an idea of PS, AE and I think I have some good taste 😊 drop a tip for me pls
I'm really considering this digital nomad career because I think I'm at a stage where I want to quit my 12hour job
We would love to see more of this videos 😍😍😍 New sub from the Philippines ❤❤❤
Was that her attempt to flirt at the end? 😹
Hahah I just clicked because I was curious to know which island the video was made. Florianópolis is far from a remote island, on fact it is a capital of a state and has a population of 1.3 million people
Brassiiiilllllll. Uhuulll very nice rafa, welcome to Brazil
Thank you!!
Amazing video 🎉 Keep it up! ❤
Nooo I knew of this gem💎 ten years ago I never been there now every one is going to there before me.. Florianapolis
You're making great videos as always! If you had put big dark subtitles instead of white ones, it would have been more convenient😅. Thanks❤
Thank you!! Next video I will make with darker subtitles, thank you for the feedback!
Yeah. Nice idea. Or maybe you mean white subtitles on black background? White or yellow are the best.
What do you call old out of interest?
