- As the war in Ukraine nears its one-year anniversary, people took to the streets of Washington Sunday to weigh in on America’s support of Ukraine.
Some want it to stop. Others think it’s more important now than ever.
For many of those at an afternoon demonstration at the Lincoln Memorial, patience for the war in Ukraine was wearing thin. To them, now is the time to end the United States' financial and military support of Ukraine.
"I don’t think we need to be involved in escalating tensions in Ukraine because it might lead to nuclear conflict," said Anthony Carrion, from New York.
"I think they need to negotiate and that would help," said Janet Bates from British Columbia, Canada. "That would save thousands of lives."
Carrion called for funds currently spent supporting Ukraine to be diverted to domestic causes.
"For instance East Palestine in Ohio, they're going to need money to rebuild that town," he said.
But blocks away at Lafayette Square, others urged continued support for Ukraine's fight against Russia.
"Ukraine is fighting for its life," said Mariam Tavberidze.
"It’s all about freedom," said Girsheli Bartaia. "Freedom is the most important thing in life, in the universe."
Tavberidze and Bartaia, like many others at the Lafayette Square demonstration, had ties to the country Georgia. The event was designed to call for now-imprisoned former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili to be transferred to a foreign hospital.
But it also highlighted their support of Ukraine.
Bartaia said he was "Ukrainian by heart because today, Ukraine needs big support."
The nation, like Sunday's demonstrations, seems to be divided. A recent AP-NORC poll says 48% of Americans support the US sending weapons to Ukraine. 29% oppose it and 22% said they had no opinion.
The Associated Press reports that in May 2022 during the early months of the war, 60% of U.S. adults supported sending arms to Ukraine.
As for sending funds directly to Ukraine, the same poll reported that 37% were in favor and 38% were against it. 23% of respondents had no opinion.

I don't think this event gets enough credit. Just consider how divided America is today. It's so hard for liberals and conservatives to agree on anything these days, almost impossible with all the political persecution, censorship and personal attacks. And yet a group of liberals and conservatives who probably disagree on a wide range of issues have put aside their differences and march for peace. That really commands respect. I've been noticing for sometime that more and more people who voted for this man Biden who used to support him no longer do. The silent majority is growing.

The media has been in the tank for Ukraine since the day it began. Even before the war the media was on the side of Obama when we armed the Ukrainians so they could kill other Ukrainians in Luhansk and Donetsk. The media covered our aid but obscured the fact that this pro western regime was killing it's own people.

@@dennistofvesson6351 Yes. I suppose it's possible there was some accurate and fair reporting but until recently I just haven't seen it. I did see today an article by the New York Times of all things with the headline that America is in over it's head in Ukraine. It was a surprisingly fair article. That said the vast majority of stories I see about Ukraine is pure propaganda. I'm not saying every article is totally false but most of these articles aren't really informative, they just repeat the same line that Russia is in trouble, the Ukrainians are winning, Russia will be defeated, etc. While ignoring anything that suggests the war is not going well. Slowly I'm starting to see news stories here and there like the NYT article that aren't just Ukraine is awesome and Russia is losing but actually deal with critical issues.

For each 1000+ anti-war demonstrators in front of the Lincoln Memorial there was a handful of disgruntled Georgians on the other side of the White House, there for another reason and you make it look like there was a pro-war demo of almost equal strength. Because long time ago, maybe 300 years or so it was part of Georgia. So, the Russia peacekeepers were there to protect the Abhasian people. And guess who backed Georgia?

I don’t think these protests should be politically affiliated. All Americans who are opposed to American involvement in Ukraine must come together. The nature of this war is unlike others in that both Russia and NATO posses thousands of nuclear bombs. Hundreds of billions in aid to Ukraine have already been given meanwhile the United States has problems domestically and abroad, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
It was a rally organized by a leftist party and a Libertarian party. 10 demands which included end this war, cut military spending (& spend that money here), free Julian Assange, and others. It wasn't supposed to be political but some douche bags that were for these demands backed out because they didn't like some other speakers political views. It hurt the cause

@@dennistofvesson6351 It may well be true. The media has done an excellent job in creating a narrative that is very very hard to fight. Who doesn't want to support a democracy under threat by an authoritarian regime. Except they purposely omit the fact that the Ukrainian Government is responsible for killing thousands of it's own citizens in southern Ukraine and that the west supported this. It also doesn't mention that Ukraine's democratic government was overturned by an angry mob and replaced with a western picked President who half the country doesn't support. If people knew these facts they wouldn't support arming the regime in Ukraine especially since it could lead to a nuclear war something the media doesn't talk about either. I have to hand it to the media, they have done such a good job in deceiving so many people into thinking Ukraine should be saved and that the Ukrainians aren't on the verge of defeat. It's the greatest piece of modern war propaganda the world has ever seen. So I don't doubt the numbers.

Well they might have saved the rest of the world. Had Georgia been accepted in NATO the west would have put missile systems in place and the Russians would have bombed them and our world would come to an end in a nuclear holocaust so I think the Georgians are heroes there loss stopped a nuclear war between NATO and Russia which may now happen in Ukraine.

@jd8290 The conflict in eastern Ukrain started because some of them started a Russian backed milissia trying to over throw the leagal government in those areas. The killing of civilians was from both sides.

Dropping the definite article is in response to the wishes of Ukrainian separatists because Ukraine instead of the Ukraine sounds more as though that part of Russia is a separate state. It's THE Ukraine to me. The fight between Ukrainian and Russian nationalists has nothing to do with me. I only abandon what I was formerly supporting so I am not abandoning anything.
It is not really if Russia has "their" way, it is if Putin has his way. This is especially Putin's war, the wish to regain territory surrendered to the West after the collapse of the Soviet Union. I do not think that the Ukraine would be treated "nicer" if the West didnt provoke Russia, so what? but I strongly believe that the more the West gets involved in an inter-Russian dispute the more likely it will e scalate into a nuclear war.

This is a great service to let people know about unversal war opposition. But why did the reporter censor every word of the speakers? People came from all over the nation, I, upstate NY, and we're only treated to cherrypicked visitors. Worse, the pro-war Georgian and Ukranian party-crashers, were given the last word. I saw Russian flags waved, there were plenty of them, why didn't they get a voice? If they're anti-war, why weren't they included? The purpose of the March, Ralley, was to unite across parties, across idiology, race and class. That should have been the focus of your story, and the message, anti-war. We're not "fatigued with the Ukraine war". We're sick to death of US war provocation, war profiteering and engineering and US war crime, like bombing the Nord Stream pipeline. We're sick of trillions of dollars looted from the US Treasury for the rich in the name of secret war, debt unpaid which will come do on we, the poor, not the monsters doing the looting.

You don't know what you're talking about. The billions of dollars sent were mostly in military vehicles. Most of those vehicles don't have a use to the US anymore. It would cost the US more money to destroy the vehicles than to just send them to Ukraine.

Sure. Just like the Russians did when they finally went into the Donbass to stop the daily Ukrainian shelling, etc. that, to that point, had already killed over 14,000 Russian-speaking civilians there.
The people had been begging for their help since the Azov battalion began shelling them in 2015.
Russia tried during the ensuing 8 years to stop the slaughter peacefully, but when the Minsk agreements failed Russia finally stepped in and helped the people with humanitarian convoys of needed items and doctors and military defense.
There's much more to the story, but that, in a nutshell, is what it's about.
