Foundations of Hair Cutting - Elevation

  • Elevation is the up and down (vertical) movement of hair. Whether you take a section that is horizontal, vertical or diagonal, the hair within those sections must always travel up or down to control your elevation. In this video, discover how elevation affects the outcome of your haircuts.

    These videos have taught me waaayy more about haircutting than they taught me in school! These videos actually break it down in a way that makes sense! Thank you!

    Wonderful videos for not only aspiring hairdressers, but for those who are looking for a refresher. Would love to see illustrations of how the completed haircuts might look. It can be a little hard to imagine on an uncut mannequin. A picture is worth a thousand words! Thanks!

    Thank you so much for this series of videos! I recently finished beauty school & passed my state board exam. I feel like I learned more from your cutting tutorials than I ever did in school. These are incredibly helpful!

    I love that SOMEONE is actually explaining the how and why behind cutting hair. I found that after cosmetology school (I'm a Toni & Guy grad), I had no idea how to do anything other than what classic cuts that I was taught in school. I didn't know anything about the basic shapes of triangular, square, and round, or why/when I elevate, distribute, or hold my fingers at a particular angle. Thanks Andrew and the Sam Villa Team!

    The best tutorial ever for learning elevation. When I see it for the first time I did not understand when you say that extreme elevation maintains weight and length in the perimeter. But it is true because when we elevate extremely the length starts to fall down, whereas in lower elevation we are taking length and weight from the perimeter

    What you have demonstrated about over-direction is so cool. I am getting a 60's hairdo image, where there is very little elevation in the lower two-thirds of the hair, but the full amount in the upper third, giving the hair the most volume, reducing the need and time for teasing, as well as using less hairspray. It would also be a neat technique for bangs to be less out of control, even those prone to curling and cowlicks.

    Thank you. I renewed my license but a lot of the foundation has to be reviewed and not a lot of professional understand that. Also you explain things very well. Thanks again

    hey , Andrew first of all thanx a lot for real educative tips for all of us ! Honestly I have been following you guys regularly n it really helps a lot its been 1 and a half year m into this field but u guys gave lot of education which helped me a lot thanx. My question regarding elevation is that I know over direction maintains length and adds weight to the hair but as u were
    elevating it all the way to the other side of the head it creates lot of weight but isn't that over direction only ? Please upload a video for over direction too... M little bit confused into these 2 stuff which u explained at the end ! Thank you . :) lov u guys .

    I dont understand 45 degrees, i can do 90 degree haircut on short hair, but when i have to do a haircut, that involves, different degrees, and overdirection, different finger angles, thats when i feel like its so much for me to process and then i mess up 😩 help please

    • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  5 лет назад

      Hey Damaris... it can get pretty complicated when trying to combine all of the different elements together. Sounds like a hands-on class would be a good next step for you. It's hard to learn these concepts from a video.

    Hi my name is Ross Harmsen,
    I plan on starting cosmetology school in December ! I am trying to learn as much as I can about hair/ cutting techniques before starting school . Do you guys have any tips on which videos to begin with in order to learn the fundamentals ?

    I'm thinking about going to cosmetology school and I was wondering if you might know of any scholarships? I'm disabled but I am still hoping that maybe one day I'll be able to go to school. I have a real passion for hair,makeup and nails but I'm so lost on where to go, how to pay for it and if my body can handle standing for long periods of time. (I've had 2 back surgeries lol) but when you love something you try your hardest to do it. Anyway, I wanted to go to a higher end school but I'm unsure of the costs and if there are scholarships. Thanks for your help in advance. I really love your videos and the amazing things you do with hair! Your an inspiration!

      Hey there... the only scholarship I currently know of is through www.beautychangeslives.org . I don't think it's full tuition but anything helps. Also, most major schools have very good financial aid programs. I hope your able to pursue your passion in the beauty industry... it's an amazing career and there is a lot of opportunity.

    Hi, can you please explain the different results when one cuts straight across a section of hair and when one cuts into the end perpendicularly with the scissors. I've seen cuts done both ways. What is the different result?

    Much better than beauty school but still difficult. I lost you at collapsing silhouette, taking weight from the top, building density up and away, elevating 180 allow length to drop out towards perimeter, taking more length from upper surface, maximum amount of movement. Please utilize visual tools to explain all that bla bla bla.

    if you want the volume to be at the top of your head and not at the bottom of your hair (aka I have thick, wavy/curly hair, but do not want a deva style cut because I am not all over curly)what angle are you supposed to cut at?

    • @mulliganstew72
      @mulliganstew72 4 года назад

      MinnieTyko Go top down. Elevate at the top, upwards. That’s the look I have right now. And I have same as you, think, wavy, curly hair.

    Sometimes when I cut my outline at zero I'll next cut my next section or so at "45" degrees then 90, sometimes then straight up is this not leaving the layers longer holding it down lower at the bottom?

    • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  5 лет назад +1

      The layers at the top will become shorter the higher you elevate the hair from a foundational perspective. Now... there are ways you can contradict that "rule" of hair cutting, but if you are following a consistent guide, that will usually be true.

    I wish you would do your videos on real people, so we can see what it looks like when it is done. The "redken" over directed to the other side from the top of the head, I would have love to have seen how that looked. We can see what you do, but we must be able to see what it looks like, Please start cutting as you talk instead of just showing what each direction does. Help educate us more.
