HURTIGRUTEN SVALBARD EXPRESS - Bergen to Longyearbyen - An incredible Arctic Voyage!

- In 2023 Hurtigruten revived the Svalbard Express expedition cruise as part of its 130th anniversary celebrations. The newly refurbished MS Trollfjord takes passengers from Bergen to Longyearbyen (and back if they wish). We took the northbound leg only which allows more time in Longyearbyen and includes a wildlife cruise on the company's MS Bard vessel.
The voyage skirts the incredible coastline of Norway and makes extended stops at Åndalsnes, Træna, Stokmarknes, Tromsø and Honningsvåg as well as sailing into the famous Trollfjord. Every single day was spectacular (as was the food!).
The only disappointment - not seeing Bjørnøya (Bear Island) due to thick fog in the Barents Sea. You can't control the weather!

Excellent video, andmost of all, thank you for choosing a norwegian based and operated cruise liner . I wish everyone did the same, mostly to save our wonderfull fjords from international cruiseliner with ships that are polluting way too much . So this is an excellent video for showing how you can travel and experience our wonderful fjords with vessesl that are enviromental friendlier than large cruiseliners . THank You :)
Thank you. I would never board one of those monstrous cruise liners. Frankly I think they should be kept out of the fjords.
@@TravelObscurer Some restrictions are on its way, but even in a small goverment like ours, it takes too long time. I wish people in general would be more aware of traveling more eco friendly.
The Norwegian coast is such a fascinating blend of remote, yet highly developed.
Yes, it's now hard to imagine how different it was before Norway discovered oil.
85 % of us norwegians live within 10 km from saltwater.
@@TravelObscurerWhy do you think it was different before?
Thank you!
Another great video.
I don't remember seeing the big ship inside the Hurtigruten Museum.
Must be added after I visited it 15 years ago.
I hope you have had a smooth recovery after your surgery. This looks so peaceful.
Thank you. Yes, I'm recovering well.
@@TravelObscurer Outstanding 🙌🏽🥳
Another fantastic video. I could watch this beautiful coastline all day.
Glad to see you and your mom Rosemary. My daughter and I (i'm 78) always enjoy your productions. While all around us go south, we always go north!
Thank you. Yes, we both identify with the attraction of the north!
Amazing seeing this from your perspective since i was working on board at the time. Great video!
Thank you to you and all your colleagues for creating such an amazing experience for everyone on board. Glad you enjoyed the film Mark 🙂
On the same trip like you. thanks for the beautyful pictures....
Very well presented and edited travelogue. I very much enjoyed watching and will seek out your other videos.
Thank you!
Thanks for another wonderful video. What a great way to recuperate from heart surgery!
Yes indeed, Thought we would have to cancel up until about 2 weeks before.
This to me is the most breathtaking scenery. Thank you for sharing.
Visiting Svalbard is my dream, hoping to fulfill it next year for my 50th ❤ This trip looks amazing, thanks for sharing it.
What a wonderful way to celebrate your 50th!!
We took the same cruise in Sept 2023 and it was exactly as you pictured it. A great cruise that I highly recommend to everyone.
Fantastic! We were on the Svalbard Express north with you (and south after you went on your next adventure) - it was amazing to relive those days through your video, and to see the incredible things you got to see during your time in Svalbard. Thank you for this beautiful travelogue!
Thanks for the feedback! It was a wonderful trip.
Lovely video. I was on Hurtigruten this May. Would love to go again.
They are hard to beat aren't they?!
Recognised many places from Hurtigruten's coastal express and I really love that you took your mum with you. Best wishes for the future.
Thank you Wendy!
Glad Mum had a good trip too ! Thank you for your video - a fantastic journey !
Thanks Veronica. Yes, mum would do it all over again tomorrow!
I’ve sailed on the Trollfjord several times on the coastal express route Bergen to Kirkenes. It was always my favourite ship in the Hurtigruten fleet. Great to see it back in service on the sailings to Svalbard. Thank you!
It's a great ship - with a top class crew.

Amazingly compiled. Did the fabulous Hurtigruten Classic Voyage twice and a separate trip by air to Svalbard. Thank you for this wonderful video!
Thank you for the great feedback.
Love your videos! Hope you’ve been recovering well from surgery :)
Thank you! Yes, recovery going well so far. Glad to be alive.
Lucky to travel a similar route and oat a the same time of the year, but from Southampton on the Queen Victoria. It was a beautiful two weeks. The Weather was mixed but as we rounded the North Cape, the sun was out and the whole cliff stood out in grey and green almost a 3D effect. A beautiful country, and the people we met were friendly. Hoping to return there next year.
You were lucky to get sunshine at the North Cape!
Beautiful. Just returned from Norway. Pls keep posting...
I will! Thank you so much for watching!
Great travelogue. Enjoyed it a lot! Well told.
My goodness, loved everything about this. Your choice of cruise line, the destination and ports, the music, your narration and the beautiful photography. I will share with friends. You are a most gifted blogger and it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so much. We are booked on a 16 day cruise on a Princess ship for June 14, 2024 round trip Southampton which goes to the top of Norway. This is the 4 th year we have had this booked, each year cancelled due to Covid and this year due to funds. So fingers crossed for 2024. We live in Vancouver but from the UK originally, so will visit family in the UK prior to cruise. I would love to try Hurtigruten but they are very expensive. Thanks for the video. Regards from Vancouver. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thank you so much for kind words Chris. Hope your 2024 trip goes ahead. Regards to Vancouver - it's a while since I've visited.
What a wonderful and sympathetic video. Hurtigruten and Svalbard are on my bucking list, but like so many other things I won't be able to afford them. Remains only to watch longing videos.
I also like the beautiful pronunciation.
Thank you Hilde🙂
thanks for sharing this was wonderful!
Thanks for the great feedback.

Amazing filmography!
Can’t wait to watch more of your videos.
Thank you so much!
Hi Johnathan Excellent video....Mindblowing visulas... was just wondering how cold was it in Longyerbean ??
Thank you. It was between 10 and 13 degrees centigrade. Warmer than it should be in July.
Great video mate...G'day from Sydney Australia.
Thanks! G'day back to you from Scotland
Good for you for taking your mom!
It's a mutual collaboration - mum helps with the cost whilst I do all the organising and carry the luggage. Works well!
Good choice of music.
wow very nice content friend
Thank you!
@@TravelObscurer you’re welcome
Excellent video. Loved it. Just that the background music was a bit too overpowering.
❤
Hi. I'm not a robot.
Not the same as the MS Norsel😅.
A very well made video....but there are a couple of things I would like to point out.
You could maybe made it clearer that the cruise you took ....and that ship....are not a part of the coastal express which ships are in fixed scheduled traffic along the coast ....and the route is called hurtigruta or hurtigruten (the original old naming of the fast route). In 2005 merged the three last companies, that run the coastal express route, into one company ....and named it Hurtigruten. Hence a name they just stole from the naming of the route. That is like a potato farmer who establish a company and nick the word potato and call his company Potato ....and no one else can thereafter use the word potato. Even the state authority pretend as nothing and suddenly has renamed the route to kystruten ( coastal route). I'm not happy with that the iconic route's name hurtigruta has been stolen like in this case.
The company Hurtigruten run 7 of the 11 ships that serves now in the coastal express route. The new Norwegian company Havila run the 4 other ships. You showed one of the Havila ships arriving at the port in Stokmarknes.
The ship you travelled with, MS Trollfjord, plus 2 other ships that was earlier in the coastal express traffic ....has now been moved over to the other company Hurtigruten Cruises. In additions they have 3 new builds. These ships do only expeditionary cruises ....and hence has nothing with the coastal express route (hurtigruta) to do. But they carry the same logo and "uniform" of colours.
When it comes to the hurtigrute museum in Stokmarknes then things went a little wrong for you. You mixed up the old DS Finnmarken ( DS = steam ship .....build in 1912) with it's newer replacement of MS Finnmarken ( MS = motor ship ......build in 1956 ). So the ship which is exhibited is the newer MS Finnmarken that was in traffic until 1993.
The older DS Finnmarken was in traffic from 1912 to 1956 ...and then was replaced... After a couple of other Norwegian owners was it sold in 1960 to the Netherlands for scrapping.
Already before it was sold the 1. class smoking lounge was taken out and placed on the maritime museum in Bergen....were it still are to be found.
By a random luck the remains of ships lounge and command bridge was found in a forest in the Netherlands. The remains was brought to Norway / Stokmarknes were a long process of renovating that to the original look. These are exhibited but stand as separate objects ....and not onboard the newer MS Finnmarken.
Thanks for the feedback. I've taken the standard coastal express B-K route twice and am very lucky to be going again in February (and filming).
Chances are you have Raynauds Syndrome. The white finger in the cold. It's not life threatening.
Yes, I do have mild Raynaud's syndrome. Rarely in summer though.
Great!
Thanks
