i think the "gap" thing is to emphasize that the control should always be with the fingers, yes you could rest it on the palm but the control/grip/feel focus should be on the fingers.
The reason Ray Allen and Kevin Durant hold the ball in the middle of their body is that they are both cross-eye dominant, being right-handed and left-eye dominant.
You improved so much Mark, I was just on a trip for a couple of days and when I came back you became a different person, a better video editor and storyteller. Keep it up and make sure to remember me when you get famous!
I think a couple other things to mention are how it all aligns to the basket, I say hip, elbow and follow through. Mention how Allen, Curry and Durant all dip while Klay puts it straight into his shot pocket. Something on 1 and 2 motion shots. Shooting on the way up vs shooting at jump peak. 2 motions are really good for being able to rise above defenders, 1 motions are quick to get off before recovering defenders. Footwork is another thing to touch on, old 1-2 vs hop.
Hey Mark just wanted to put this out there.. If you look at Steph shooting in slow motion, you'll see that he actually does not have a thumb flick but rather makes his guide hand thumb point at the direction of the rim. Amazing video and an amazing way of studying how to shoot a basketball, congrats!!
Great video debunking certain myths that are still coached to this day, which is mind blowing. I do think it’s important to dive deeper and look at other mayor aspects of shooting which include 1. stability (out of the legs and core, which is can be aided by proper footwork), 2. how fluid the ball goes from catch to release (think canon wise, the longer/directed the pathway is, the more direction the shot will have), 3. soft quick motion for longer shots, or a more Upperbody controlled shot for shots closer to the rim (mid range pull ups, fade aways,..) and 4. Not to forget the detail of making the ball rotate moderately so it can pinch its pathway in the air following the physics laws of when a sphere is rotating through air.
That story with stephen cury that have a thumb flick on his shot, that many people believe, is absolutely wrong. Stephen Curry thumb flick is an ILLUSION. When he is shooting his thumb of support hand somethimes follows the shot and sometimes staying neutral, with no involvement to power or guide the shot. If you see Curry in slow motion, depending from the body stance have when he is shooting is doing one or another. He came from him natural not force anything and this is the reason that he is so accurate. There is a tendency to complicate things and try to find the hidden secret for all. Keep it simple. The leg power and middle body (hips etc) creates the power for the shot, nothing else. It's ridiculus to say thumb can create power or guide the ball. The only thing thumb can do is to make you inconsistent, have bad affect on the trajectory of the shot. The shot is one hand motion of the guide hand and nothing more at all.
KD doesn't bring the ball up diagonally. Because his body faces to the left of the target at his set up, the ball naturally starts to the left of the target... The ball actually track relatively linearly to his spine on the way to the set point.
cool video. Something very unique about Steph's shot that I don't know if any one else has is that the trunk of his body twists midair as he shoots. So watch his shoulders and hips as they turn while the ball is going up in the air. I'm not aware of any other pro baller who does this.
I don’t even watch or follow basketball, but enjoy just shooting at local parks. This was an awesome video even from a non fan of basketball! Keep up the hard work man!
I somehow have a higher chance of making 3s than layups and I am just entering my freshman year of high school, and I have my tryouts in 2 weeks, but I am not feeling very confident because even though I am 6'3, I am quite skinny. Love your videos, they inspire me to work harder and harder to reach my goals🙏
I’ve been playing basketball for years now - and I’ve always been extremely meticulous when practicing my jump shot. I know exactly when I’ve messed up my usual form, since it just feels incorrect. Focusing on the details, this video lines up with my experience pretty well - my release comes off my index and middle fingers, I *definitely* do not shoot with squared feet (only shoulders), ball is in the middle on release, and I usually have a straight body when shooting. My shooting regressed for one year due to neglect (too busy to play), in which it looked more like Kevin Durant’s shot form - my knees would come together briefly while jumping, and my guide hand would not guide the ball all the way. I don’t know how KD does it, but my shooting percentage plummeted that year; not to mention it simply looked ugly when I shot. None of that actually mentions what, from my personal experience, seems to be the secret to an accurate shot though, since everyone’s form varies. If you want a good shot, especially as you go out to distance, you want ball spin and a proper arc! From a physics standpoint, the ball spin is what allows the ball to travel higher in the shot in the first place; and in order to achieve this, usually a proper arc has to come as a side effect. When shooting you should “shoot” at about a 45-60 degree angle ideally - that is try to make the ball leave at around that angle relative to the hoop. Not your arms! The angle is for the start of the *ball*’s trajectory. With proper wrist flick and finger control on release for spin, it should be an accurate shot. Only thing you worry about after that is the power you put behind it. It’s hard to describe, but you know the shot is good or close to a make since it just feels smooth performing it.
I do think spreading your hand on the ball is beneficial though cause it can help with control and midrange shots, but for me it is hard to do cause I cant get much wrist flexion and it results in me not getting enough arc so I have it more relaxed. I wish I can grip it and shoot it like Mike and Kobe but I dont have the hand size or flexibility for that. Do whats comfortable and the most important thing is being able to shoot straight and having a high arch. Just let your body try to shoot straight and high naturally.
Excellent video! Your passion for the game leads you to study it and to practice. Practice practice practice and you will break that record. By the way, "late great" means a great person who is now dead, and Ray Allen is still alive at 49.
I've studied Steph Curry's jumper for years and I can tell you he doesn't have a thumb flick at all sure he has a weird thumb position on his left hand after the release but it does not touch or push the ball during his release, it's a thing he does for the feel of it, it's not a thumb flick at all, kyrie most definitely has a thumb flick. I'm not saying a thumb flick is bad, all I'm saying is steph doesn't have one

All these little details of your jump shot don’t matter. There are two things that matter, you are able to shoot it straight, and the flight of the ball must be conducive to entering the basket. I was going to just say you need to be able to get the ball to the basket, but you need to have proper arc as well. If you don’t shoot the ball well, chances are it’s because you cannot shoot the ball straight when putting adequate power into the shot. Thats why people can make form shots, less power needed for the shot allows for more focus on shooting it straight and into the basket (aka less focus needed for power and getting the ball to the rim). Having a proper understand of the physics of shooting will make shooting easier, and you will know exactly why missed or made every shot you take.

Pretty misguided stressing about not having a gap thing. The gap is there you just cant see it in a single screenshot frame of a jumpshot. They all say it because thats how they learned to shoot, because when you are practicing you need to exaggerate and focus on it. Its just second nature to them to transfer the ball from their palms to their fingers.
It seems like that part of the video was controversial for sure. Some saying it is a thumb flick others saying it’s not. I love how everybody is getting in the conversation.💪
Mark I have a decent midrange shot but struggle from 3. I shoot the ball of my 3 fingers not off the middle and index, I include my ring finger in the release. Should I change it and if so how should I go about doing that
Hey Mark, great video. I have been the player with Most threes on his league, but I shoot with the chicken wing elbows. Everybody tells me that its wrong, but its working for me. Do I have to change it?
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. You said you make your shots so I don’t see a problem. But, if it becomes a problem, fix it in the offseason. Start from scratch and rebuild your jumpshot form and take some time to get used to it. DON’T CHANGE IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEASON!
Rotation comes from wrist flick. The ball should be pushed up and away from the shooting pocket with the hand under the ball. At the end of the arm extension, the wrist flips over, imparting rotation to the ball.
Break that record your senior year my man, God willing 💪
I’d bet his over if I could 😂

i noticed on stephs and kds jumper, that their feet are at an angle. Is that optimal for shooting development and release?
I personally stagger my feet and they are not 10 toes. I think it’s a more natural position personally. So is it optimal? I would say yes (personally)
@@markkeepsGod1st thank you for the feedback bro!
@@dhruvpatel-pw9gtno problem bro💪
Steph's thumbflick occurs after his release so it isn't really involved in his shot
I need to watch this im mid at shooting I can make a three
Pretty misguided stressing about not having a gap thing. The gap is there you just cant see it in a single screenshot frame of a jumpshot. They all say it because thats how they learned to shoot, because when you are practicing you need to exaggerate and focus on it.
Its just second nature to them to transfer the ball from their palms to their fingers.
Why is this not way bigger
I appreciate your support man thank you
Ray Allen is still living. The term “late great” is used to refer to persons who are no longer alive.
Whoops
Ben simmons has the best jumper fr fr

I wouldn't really call it a thumbflick when you have shooters like Kyrie Irving whou actually uses the thumb as a pushing force when shooting
It seems like that part of the video was controversial for sure. Some saying it is a thumb flick others saying it’s not. I love how everybody is getting in the conversation.💪
Got to include Reggie miller ❤
He’s up there too. But I wouldn’t put him in my top 4 all time personally.
i have a slightly bent back when shooting further, is it a problem and should it be changed?
You only had current or recent players. No Larry Bird which is ironic when discussing greatest shooter's of all time.
Mark I have a decent midrange shot but struggle from 3. I shoot the ball of my 3 fingers not off the middle and index, I include my ring finger in the release. Should I change it and if so how should I go about doing that
I’d recommend fixing it by constant form shooting around the basket
2:23 late great? Did ray Allen die and i have no idea????
I searched and he’s definitely alive
no lol
Hey Mark, great video.
I have been the player with Most threes on his league, but I shoot with the chicken wing elbows.
Everybody tells me that its wrong, but its working for me.
Do I have to change it?
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
@@markkeepsGod1st Ok thanks!
Hey Mark, my shot is good and I make tons of shots, however, I can’t get good rotation on the ball and my shot looks weird?
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. You said you make your shots so I don’t see a problem. But, if it becomes a problem, fix it in the offseason. Start from scratch and rebuild your jumpshot form and take some time to get used to it. DON’T CHANGE IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEASON!
@@markkeepsGod1st alright thanks I really appreciate it
Rotation comes from wrist flick. The ball should be pushed up and away from the shooting pocket with the hand under the ball. At the end of the arm extension, the wrist flips over, imparting rotation to the ball.
