  • Episode 145: Ever wonder what the difference between tension headache and migraine is? Those of us in the headache advocacy community often ignore tension headache. It actually plays an important role in the headache field, and there are a lot of unanswered questions on this topic.
In this week's episode of HeadWise, Lindsay Weitzel, PhD, asks neurologist and headache specialist Dr. Matthew Robbins, MD things like:
    - Can tension headache become severe and/or chronic?
    - Can Botox be used to treat tension headache?
    - Does tension headache play a role in the stigma experienced by those of us with migraine, NDPH, and cluster?
Follow the National Headache Foundation's podcast HeadWise, as host Lindsay Weitzel, PhD, has informative discussions with headache experts on the latest treatment, research, lifestyle recommendations, and personal stories about living with migraine disease and headache disorders. Battling a moderate-severe tension headache right now. I could cry. I wish the pain would go away.

Is it possible that what I always thought were tension headaches are actually migraines?? The envelop my whole head and are in the typical locations defined as tension headaches -- but they pulse; sounds make my head feel like it's expanding and deflating, like when your ears are clogged and air is pushing in and out, trying to get through. Light makes my eyes hurt a lot more and the pain above them gets worse. They are AWFUL and typically last at least 3 days (I'm currently on my 4th day).

I'm in perimenopause (I'm 51) and have had bad headaches for the last few years the day or two before my menstrual period. What is curious, (and awful) is I've been battling a headache over the last 10 days now AND this is now the longest I've gone without a menstrual period (50 days). I have an appointment with my PCP in a few days and hopefully he can help in some way. I've had no corresponding neurological symptoms at all, and no fever, just a headache that has honestly traveled around all sides and front and back of my head. It has lessened over these 10 days, but it's obviously troubling.
I've brought this up in the past to my gynecologist, but she was no help and said she wouldn't prescribe a Triptan or anything more than Ibuprofen, which does not help 🙄
I'm pretty convinced the etiology is most likely hormonal, so I'm hoping my PCP will try some testing, but I don't know. It's very disheartening that most OB/GYN docs are not educated or even interested in women unless they are pregnant. I matter too. 😔

Great information. Thank you. I've had migraines since adolescence. After 45 years the environmental sensitivities and other factors - have diminished over the decades. They used to have definite start and end signs that were strong, but not as much now.

Thank You🌟 Just had right side behind eye runny nose pain with stiff shoulder& neck. Some time ago had one on left side, much worse pulsing pain behind ear and again stiff shoulder&neck. The earlier was after working with a new tool that most likely agitated muscles(+PMS). The latest one maybe then was due to my paddling hobby( after a break) that also stressed muscles...

Hi. I get headaches that I assumed were tension headaches because the unbearable pain usually comes from my neck and shoulders (feels like tight muscles). And it gets worse with movement ... it's sickening 😞 You mentioned that tension headaches are not usually affected by movement ... so what do I have going on? I usually take way more meds than I should to get relief. If I wake up w this type headache, it normally takes me 6+ hours to feel Any better. I can't lie down in the bed, I feel the pain magnify 10-fold when I lie down. I sit up in my recliner and keep lights low and cannot eat or drink. Very nauseous but never actually sick.
I was diagnosed with 'migraines w/o aura' years ago. I have prescription meds (Frova) that sometimes work. I have to be careful with them, as I'm only allowed NINE pills per MONTH! 😮
Thanks, hope to hear from you and I hope this helps someone else.
