    so land snails can drown underwater?

      Yes, land snails can drown if the water is too deep. They cannot swim nor can they hold their breath underwater because most of them don't have gills. So land snails like to have access to shallow water for bathing and drinking.

    Well, I'll be the first to tell you that the shell isn't hard enough because I accidentally stepped on one this morning and it's now a mucus mush right now. Completely grossed me out!
