I'm a voice over artist and have both the TLM 102 and the Spirit. They are both superb mics, love them both. Aston are stunning value. I don't think you should underestimate that little Neumann and consider it overpriced though. It's the only one with a European-made capsule, and that's an expensive part. Whilst I love my Spirit loads, the 102 has a lower noise floor too
The TLM 102 is an amazing microphone. It might sound a little bit dull, but if you remove the foam inside the capsule it REALLY comes to life. I have owned a TLM 103, TLM 49 and several others, and the TLM 102 is the one I kept. Also, it takes EQ super well, that's what you want when producing music. Don't get fooled by microphones that sound kinda airy in comparison to the TLM 102, post processed they sound like shit.
YTINF yes, no doubt about that!! The 102 is one of Neumann’s most extraordinary works, in my opinion, it only loses to the extremely high-end mics like the U87 AI, the U67, etc. It has an insane tonal balance that it’s like it’s been already equalized and multiband compressed, tight and rounded. I’ve been researching mics because I need to get one and I’m definitely going with the 102, the price is not great but the quality makes the price disappear in the horizon. Finally, take a look at this comparison with the 102 and 103: ruclips.net/video/3fPtOcDfIgA/видео.html
i love the Aston, however before i found out Meg owned one, I was thinking how the Sontronics sounded best for HER voice. it really suited her, and would be the only of the bunch i wouldn't need to EQ too much. so, i suppose, that's good on her for picking that mic for home :)
If u ever have heard the real pro microphones up to the 10000$ range, then there is a clear winner: ASTON SPIRIT. This mic sounds like a 2k to 3k $ range mic. Phenomenal sound character and technical design. Congrats guys from Aston.
There was a huge difference. Especially in the presence and The way subtle articulations were captured. To my ear, it was Neumann>Lewitt>Aston>sonotronics
IMO best mic for her is the Lewitt. What your listening for is silky highs and when the singers tone/dynamics are not harsh. This is also dependant on the pre being used.. it's a juggling game. Keep buying and trying gear..
Not in this comparison but I'm really digging the Aston Stealth. I think they did a spot on tuning for male and female vocals especially when mixing with music. I found minimal tinkering was required with the stealth in post.
To me I liked the Spirit the best for sure. The one I liked the least was the Lewitt, which REALLY surprised me because I thought it would be my favourite.
Aston spirit i think is the best mic of these. I wanna point out that the proximity effect ruined these comparisons because of the different mic distances. Neumann have some sort of disting happening in the high end that i think sounds horribel on vocals. But that can be because i think she is to close to the mic and it cant handle it. If that the problem then if that's corrected the neumann is the best sounding mic. Hard to say.
I love the TLM102 and have two of them, I thought the Aston sounded good too. I also have an 80s U87 and a 70s 47fet and think the 102 more than holds it’s own against them.. soon we’re going to be testing the Aston and 102 against the Sontronics Aria, STC, and some really big hitting mics..
i started multi track recording (home) in 1988 always only used an (sure) sm58 but over time to a sm57 it has done everything i needed. if your poor or just setting up they are fine. Dew to advice im now buying an Aston Spirit, ,Just to have a "proper studio type mic"
Liked the Aston, but, as much as I wanted it to rival the Neumann, it doesn't. The Neumann in its nuances and overall resolution is superior and keeping in mind that this is the lowest in the Neumann range. TLM can also handle 144db, you can throw that at just about anything. Having said that, for the budget, gotta like the Aston tho!
i love it when microphones take an extra step to make the microphone look iconic, u87 and tlm 103 for some reason, are unique, the shape the feel and everything and the Lewits and Aston Spirit, did the same thing from far you can tell what that microphone is which i think should be taken into consideration by manufacturers
nueman sounded great! aston sounded hollow after sontronics and lewitt sounded too crispy... why would you want that on instruments? never heard of sontronics... i want one... why would you want a hyped crispy mic for instruments? of rme, I want clarity for instruments... like earthworks.. they seem crazy flat
Maybe I'm wrong but I'm under the impression that for the Sontronics and the Aston, the mic capsule was not properly oriented. In consequence the voice sounded a little less bright and clear compared to the Lewitt and the Neumann microphones.
Zee Neumann has warmth, low end extension, air, upper-end finesse and midrange resolution at the same time. All the others lacked something. The Aston had a more rounded sound - lacked air but still good midrange - I can see why some people would prefer it. The Sontronics was like 80% of the Neumann for half price - not bad.
I do think the Neumann sounded more neutral and might be more flexible in mixing, but I can't afford that one so I'm pleased with how the others sound by comparison. :)
Pop filter is not used to remove the S'es, but to remove the P and some of the strong T's and B's, for S'es you need a de-esser, and you have lots of S'es even when you speak. For the Lewitt, the capture of the air (high frequencies) is one of its pros.
Thanks for the work and feedback you provide. Perhaps you could do a series or number of segments comparing mics from the same manufacturer at different price points. For example, Rode: NT1 vs NT2 vs NT1000 vs NTK vs K2. Shure: SM58 vs Beta 58 vs SM7B Neumann: TLM102 vs TLM103 vs TLM107 vs U87 Thanks again
Neumann > Lewitt > Sontronics > Aston. The Neumann is smooth with a bit of raspiness in the upper mids which I think suites her voice lovely. The Lewitt might be a bit sibilant but it has a clear crisp sound that I really like. The Sontronics mic is very dull but it sounds nice, could probably improve with some EQ. Didn't like the Aston at all with her voice, it's a nice mic though, just not a good fit.
The quality of the singing and the consistency was freaking phenomenal. But, what the heck happened to everything under 500 Hz, it's like you had such a thin recording it sounded like she was 4 feet from each of the mic's with a poorly matched interface. I have two of those mic's, and even on a straight wire in to a UAD 710, Focusrite Red, or a RME , I would have to work hard against those mic's to get such a thin, distant sound. What happened? Am I crazy, as I didn't see anyone else comment about the missing low frequency and matching issue, and I did go over to alternate YT channels reviewing the mic's and they sounded normal-- but not in this video? I switched between ATH M50X headphones and Focal Trio monitors, and heard the same thing - poor impedance matching and no low frequency response.
@@TheGoodDo - obviously depends a bit on prefs/style, studio vs live and other considerations. With a bit of post work, any of those can be useful in the studio. happy to hear she liked sontronics, I thought that was the one I liked most. Neumann didn't sound all that interesting to me even tho I thought would be best bc of the price.
I was hoping to others sounded comparable to the Neumann. Not the case. The only one that kept up was the Lewitt, which seems like it was missing some lower frequencies.
I'm very curious how the Aston Spirit compares to the Neumann KMS 105 - especially on acoustic guitar and male vocals. I'm considering an upgrade for my home studio, the signa/noise ratio and sensitivity are more suitable for the application and I do like the Spirit's tone compared to the Aston Origin and the Rode NT1a, but I'ld like to know if the Aston Spirit is an improvement on a kms 105.
In my experience, and I am now selling my Aston Spirit after 2 years, if you have a raspy voice the Aston will make you sound harsh. Its actually useless for my vocals, it adds a full deck of Marlboro Reds to my vocal takes. I have just purchased an SM7B for a smooth alternative and also a TLM 102. Waiting on both to arrive and I will see which to keep.
All of these mics sound great! Just use them for the application you need. Showing their characteristics is cool, but comparing them is pointless unless one claims to be a direct clone of another. Otherwise, great vid!
In future please stack multiple takes, that may show the smoothness or roughness of the mics better. Thank you. Good idea though. Tempted by the Astons as they are flexible but they don't seem as smooth. The TLM102 also had a bit more low mid detail and weight may be, though that could have been the proximity effect. 102 v smooth though.
Nice comparison, beautiful voice. It’s a given that RUclips compression minimizes the differences between mics, but if you forced me to pick, I’d take the Neumann 102.

the lewits sounded too thin comparing to all the other three which makes me think that her voice isnt that thin, and the TLM 102 still sounded best, the warmth and way it handled the sibilance not making too harsh like the lewit, the sontronics i think it sounded bad cause the gain was a bit lower giving me the perception that its bad, and the aston spirit, came really close to the tlm 102 and i think in my opinion from this comparison the spirit can give the 102 a run for its money if it didnt have the NEUMAN logo on it
Interesting, I never really liked the sharper sound the Neumann and the Spirit gave, ofc it'll help in the mix but I think the Lewitt and the Sontronics sound much smoother and pleasant to me.

Your time stamp saved me money bro.. i will go for the lewitt..thanks a ton
LeWitt killed it if top end texture is important.
Right findings.
Both the spirit and tlm 102 sounded good. Felt more soul in the Neumann though!
Thank you, I swear they are trolling when they make these videos!! 😂
Just bought the Aston Spirit from Andertons! Arrived today. I'M SO EXCITED TO USE IT!

I'm so sorry it's not me! My kid's playing on my phone
lewitt has the same noise floor as the tlm
Man I really like the Neumann, I don't think the other 3 are bad, but how smooth and bass the Neumann were for me it's really worth the 600 pounds.
@Sikario Sarante It might be different if you try listening in expensive headphones
Yeah it is worth it to me also
Yeah the smooth is what good microphones are all about - The Neumann has it in spades.
I've had the NT-1A and the NTK mostly on vocals, I now have the TLM 102 bought very recently and frankly it overshadows the others. Great Mic.
Nice. Just bought a Lewitt 440 Pure from you today as a birthday present to myself :)
congratulations bro!
How have you found it so far?
Lewitts are amazing whether you buy a low or high end Pure model.
The TLM 102 is an amazing microphone. It might sound a little bit dull, but if you remove the foam inside the capsule it REALLY comes to life. Aston Spirit
Tlm107

warm audio wa87 or wa47

Tlm 102 through a 1073 is butter. Amazing sound.
Neumann was the smoothest and my favorite.

There wasn’t really a cigarette paper between them. I kinda like the Aston because it’s feels contemporary but with a subtle warmth
The spirit microphone sounded really good
very subtle difference between the four, but as of late, I have been leaning towards the Lewitt.
I have the lewitt, it sounds great! very versatile
@@SmokeM2D6 Put another $100 in and get the LCT 441 Flex which is the multipattern version. It's definitely worth the extra money.

The Lewitt LCT 441 FLEX is an AMAZING MICROPHONE for the money. The TLM is most boring sounding mic on the market.
Yeah the LCT 441 is great. I chose to get that over a used C414.
I really wanted to believe these were all close but they really weren’t. The Neumann blew them all out of the water.
