    • Joe Jackson - Steppin'...
Music video by Joe Jackson performing Steppin' Out. (C) 1982 A&M Records
    Lyrics
Now, the mist across the window hides the lines
But nothing hides the color of the lights that shine
    Electricity so fine
    Look and dry your eyes
We are tired of all the darkness in our lives
With no more angry words to say can come alive
Get into a car and drive to the other side
Into the night, into the light
We are young but getting old before our time
We'll leave the TV and the radio behind
Don't you wonder what we'll find
    Steppin' out tonight?
You can dress in pink and blue just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile
We'll be there in just a while, if you follow
    Me babe, steppin' out
Into the night, into the light
    You babe, steppin' out
Into the night, into the light

More than any other 80’s record whenever I hear this it’s 1982, I’m 13 again hanging out with my friends. I honestly don’t know why it just takes me to that place every time ❤

I call it a transport song. A song that transports me right back to when it came out. I was 19 and this was one of my favorites then and still is.

Joe Jackson wrote quite a few hits in the late 70's and early 80's. This song was used in some INTEL ads and appears on the GTA game series. He wrote a lot of hit songs for young artists and supplied some of backing vocals on most of those tracks. A hidden 80's pop legend that created songs that still sound great today.

A huge album 40 years ago already! Love Joe Jackson ..a great artist with a diverse catalogue of songs from punk to pop. I have seen him twice in concert. Graham Maby deserves some love for that killer bass line ..that must have been an exercise in stamina. Great reaction thanks

It's amazing the amount of music that is licensed for use in ads, movies, tv shows etc. I guess it's the songs with the best hooks that are used the most and Steppin' Out definitely has several moments of earworm worthy musical 🎹💰ka-ching moments - I've always wanted to check out Joe Jackson a bit more - he has a real architecture to his songs and it all comes down to his epic piano playing and his masterful song writing abilities (as you alluded to in this great 😃👍 reaction) .

Joe Jackson was around in the 70's with his first hit is she really going on with him. This hit 1983. Joe Jackson played every instrument when he recorded this song. Only non instrument was a drum machine and synthesizer. Watch a more recent live performance and he explains

    *I MISS YOU 82!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
*Steppin' Out is near the top of my Eighties Faves --- along with Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen and Love Come Down by Evelyn "Champagne" King.*
So Eighties Glorious! And the absolutely mesmerizing Korg KR-55 synth melody ---- oh so deliciously and melancholically 80s!

Used to hang out in my teens in a slimy, filthy bar in the early 80's down in Alphabet City, NYC. It was one of those bars that was open 24 hrs. Old day drunks in the day, and flooded with hardcore punks and bikers at night. It STANK lol. The jukebox was so crazy as you can imagine, Black Flag to Sinatra, to The Monkees. This song was the default, like if someone left credits in the juke this would play as default. Lordhammercy we all got so sick of this song, right? Every so often a singer or band would come in. One day Joe Jackson came in and the poor guy was heckled and booed right out for no other reason than this song being default on the juke. Damn, good memories.

Joe Jackson was the non-plus ultra of SPIV (suspicious person and itinerant vagrant) rock and claimed never to have a day's work in his life. His early stuff e.g I'm The Man, and Beat Crazy are well worth a listen, as is the swing inspired Jumpin' Jive album
