I was a writer's intern at the Late Show in 2009 or so. I was very nervous and overwhelmed to be there didn't really know how to fit in. Lee was one of the nicest people there.
Anytime they did something like the hose with coffee from Starbucks, and I’d be watching the progress the coffee in the hose was making across the street toward Dave’s desk, I would just feel how amazing it was that this was happening, and how lucky I was to be able to watch it.
The world had never seen anyone talk to Robert DeNiro that way and live to tell about it - but judging from his smile, Bob enjoyed that segment far more than his actual interview!
That was fantastic. I've found a compilation of Kalter's celebrity interviews. Alan Kalter's Celebrity Interview Collection on Letterman, 2005-10 - Updated
You have to love Alan. Anybody who would do the stuff he did is the best. Thanks for all of the laughs Dave, Alan and all of those other people behind the curtain... whatever your names are.
This guy has done so many of my favorite Letterman bits. From Alan Kalter's Celebrity Interview to the 4am show and even the Starbucks tube bit, it was all fun. In addition, peanut butter exploding in Paul's face made me laugh so hard. 😂
this really speaks to how the writers rooms' must be. The idea of pitching stuff that you think has like a 1% chance of getting thru the first round of cuts and the next thing you know, there's the Randy Quaid Keebler elf. But for my money, the Ravenscroft joke is perfect! Damn, that's funny.
I remember watching that Tony the Tiger voice actor bit live... It was so great and funny I still remember it from time to time Looking back it does feel kind of going a bit too far, but its still so damn funny... Certaintly dont think many would do today...
I could swear that they did a version of the coffee delivery tube on Late Night years before the Starbucks tube. It was set up to deliver coffee and creamer I think. In the Hal Gurnee days.
It was more common than not for people to work their way up. Barbara Gaines started as a receptionist in 1980 and finished as Executive Producer. Lee, Jeremy Weiner, Tommy Ruprecht, Matt Roberts, Jill Goodwin and Rob Burnett (among many others) came through the college intern program and worked in other departments before they became writers. The best way to learn how to write for the show was to work for the show.
The peanut butter joke was great. Such a good example of the cartoonish sense of humor that would show up sometimes. These “staff favorites” collections are my favorite videos on this site.
Okay, the "grrrrrrrave" joke got me.
Alan Kalter's celebrity interviews always made me chortle. Actually, Alan Kalter was probably an underrated star of the Late Show.
I’m told there’s a complete collection elsewhere on the RUclips, and it includes the full De Niro/Hoffman segment.
Big Red was never underrated. He was an increasingly integral and very beloved member of the Letterman universe.
I wish he was still with us so he could do an hour long segment on this channel.
I laughed so hard at the Tony the Tiger bit.
I'd never seen that and holy hell I was laughing for about a full minute afterward.
Amazing!
I'm still laughing
Yeeees, and I think Dave's reaction to the joke makes it millions times funnier
Omg me too! That was Gr.r.r.r.reat!
"Those are props" is one of the greatest lines of all time
I totally forgot about the Buzz Aldrin bits. Omg that was amazing.
We all need someone to look at us like Erika Page looked at Buzz.
Wow, I was at that 4AM show. I was dozing and Alan Kalter slapped me on the shoulder to wake me up. Love you AK, I still have your explodo-pop.

You were so lucky to have these experiences!
Anytime they did something like the hose with coffee from Starbucks, and I’d be watching the progress the coffee in the hose was making across the street toward Dave’s desk, I would just feel how amazing it was that this was happening, and how lucky I was to be able to watch it.
I felt something similar when the Berlin wall came down, but the coffee hose was definitely better.

Alan Kalter's Celebrity Interview Collection on Letterman, 2005-10 - Updated
It was good to see it, but I have to agree with Dave. It was too much.
Alan Kalter ad-libbing "yeah you, I'm talking to you!" to Robert De Niro might be his finest moment. How on earth did that not air?!?
Oh. I missed the connection. thx
@@kinsmed I missed it too
The self-deprecating humor on this show is second to none. Hilarious!
Grrrrrrave! I’m crying! 😂😂😂😂😂
I love that the guy offered Dave a fork.
Rest In Peace, Alan Kalter.
Nobody could make it awkward better than you.
Laughed all the way through, thanks Lee!
Dude. Best compilation yet.
You have to love Alan. Anybody who would do the stuff he did is the best. Thanks for all of the laughs Dave, Alan and all of those other people behind the curtain... whatever your names are.
These were wonderful choices. More whacky stuff!!
This guy has done so many of my favorite Letterman bits. From Alan Kalter's Celebrity Interview to the 4am show and even the Starbucks tube bit, it was all fun.
In addition, peanut butter exploding in Paul's face made me laugh so hard. 😂
How long has Pamela been working for you 😂😂😂
The DeNiro/Hoffman bit is hilarious.
Lots of funny bits!😂
Where can I see that Buzz Aldrin red carpet bit in it's entirety? Lol
That Thurl Ravenscroft bit has me in tears.
Please post the entire Kalter celeb interview!
Man, Alan Kalter was FEARLESS.
We all need a little more Big Red in our lives today.
wherever he is, I'm sure he's making it REAL weird
Nobody Effs with Big Red.
@@raggededge82 he played his character perfectly and for that, we all appreciate the laughter he brought to us.
There will never be a better night time show than Letterman ............ America loves him.
5:57 He also sang "You're a mean one Mr. Grinch" for the Dr. Seuss classic (Boris Karloff did the non singing parts).

Wow! I remember most of those and the Shawshank parody is one of my all time favorites. Atta boy Lee!
Good stuff, really good stuff 😊
Alan Kalter's Celebrity Interviews were absolute masterpieces.
Greatness!
Lee needs some more attention for all of the work that he has done for David Letterman. The traveling coffee bit made me laugh and smile.
Thanks for another great Staff Favorites!
This was a good one! Lotsa clips I don't remember.
The peanut butter is so clever and hilarious. My God I'm dead laughing
😂😂 Alan and Hoffman and De Niro, my God brilliant !
That coffee idea was genius
Tom Hanks holding up the answer. Oy, that staff writer
got a big bonus for that laugh. 🙊🙈🙉🍆🥊🔥😱
I remember watching that Tony the Tiger voice actor bit live...
It was so great and funny I still remember it from time to time
Looking back it does feel kind of going a bit too far, but its still so damn funny...
Certaintly dont think many would do today...
Grrrrave.
He was the guy behind Alan Kalter's Celebrity Interview? OMG he's a genius!!
It will be a sad day when there are no more new staff favorite moments.
11:45 I swear I'm on the floor face on my knees laughing
3/4" in pipe, 1000' long is about 230 gal itself. Crazy.
Can I put in a request for Pat Farmer to do a Staff Favorite Moments?
Oh my God, I laughed my ass off with the Starbucks coffee bit!
Thurl Ravenscroft also sang the song, “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch.”
I could swear that they did a version of the coffee delivery tube on Late Night years before the Starbucks tube. It was set up to deliver coffee and creamer I think. In the Hal Gurnee days.
I love these
I'd like to hear the story of how Lee worked his way up from CBS Page to a writer.
Only Letterman would try and pump coffee hundreds of feet thru tubing across a New York City street and have it actually work.
That shore was Some Kinda Axe-ploding Beanut Butter!!!💥💥💥
Hallelujah!😊
I'd never seen or heard of the segment with Buzz Aldrin on the red carpet at the Daytime Emmys. Pretty brilliant idea, gotta admit.
The coffee idea was brilliant, too. Give this guy a raise!
Alan is a genius.
The Starbucks tube hearkens back to Steve Allen.
Can anyone explain the baked beans joke?
Please someone, I don't get it either.
I don't think there is a joke to get, it's just a weird, random thing to say. It's wacky and it made Dave laugh.
To have THIS be your job. I chose a more boring path lol.
Ah the good old days. When things were actually funny!!
The peanut butter joke was great. Such a good example of the cartoonish sense of humor that would show up sometimes. These “staff favorites” collections are my favorite videos on this site.
We sure could use a guy like Dave right now.
Six feet under-grrrrrrrrround.
Show more of the intuitive psychic, please.
Lol, Baked beans
I'm sure you've been in contact with many former staffers.... hope Joe Furey is on the list.
🤪
I don't think Dustin Hoffman was enjoying that skit at all.
Thurl Arthur Ravenscroft.
Ah. Mom.
I think they should've paid the interns more money.
I thought Julia was Stormy Daniels. I was disappointed.
Yikes. The Alan Kalter stuff was awkward.
I thought so too! I don't mind some good gutter mouth, but guess when it's so mean, just doesn't work for me.
This writer is pretty bad. No wonder I stopped watching.
