Chris Lake Is A British Producer, Artist, Mixer, DJ and Remixer. I’ve long admired Chris’ work, he’s prolific, both as an Artist and a remixer. He has a wonderful sense of melody and his vocal timing when doing remixes is amazing. Every song he remixes sounds like an original dance single.
Chris’ DAW of choice is Ableton Live and in this video he shows us his work flow: His simple Studio set up demonstrates that you can make music with just a handful of pieces of equipment and a great command of your DAW and a lot of Creativity! Chris breaks down how he created the vocal effects for his Dance hit ‘Operator’, his workflow is supremely fast and the combination of his knowledge of Ableton and its easy workflow is really impressive!
Listen to some of Chris' productions and remixes:
Remix of Blonde and Craig David’s ‘Nothing Like This’:
    • Blonde and Craig David...
Chris’ song ‘Operator’ that he breaks down in the video:

What I really love here is that you don't fall into the lazy old trope of "music today is terrible, classic rock is the only real music blah blah blah." You meet this guy on his level and learn something as a result.

Rewatching this as it came up, Chris is a genius, been following him since he popped and played Northern Ireland scene way back, still have a few of his vinyl's from that time, always remember his tune release, although he might say it was crap now possibly, but at the time this man was on point with sound... Firm handshakes to you big sir, and nice one to PLAP for this interview

That editing was actually brilliant. Lots of snobbishness from "real" musicians has to fade gradually. People saying they don't make anything real, just steal are wrong. The song is their instrument. They pick it up and manipulate it like a guitarist manipulates a guitar.

I LOVE ableton. They teach us at the school I go to using ableton and protools. To me, ableton is the perfect thing to write the song and get your ideas out and THEN bring it into protools. I've found abletons playback engine to have a weird high end thing that protools doesn't have. my mixes in ableton sound a tad bit harsher. Such a good tool though.

    • @Producelikeapro

Samples, loops, and the piano roll does make it easy to side step musical training. With pitch recognition you can literally hum or whistle a tune, convert it to MIDI and pick a synth to play it. There are piano roll features and plug-ins that keep you in key and/or manage theory. And yet in all that, and perhaps more, the art still comes from the artist. Not everyone is an artist. There is a certain something in a true artist. In some people it is big, in others it is small. And while the technology is a great leveler it can only level so much. However, in my time in the Image Lines forums there was a lot of interest from young new comers in learning at least some actual music theory. The up shot is great art will still be special. Bad art will get better. IMHO.

@38:25 Me too! Simple setup but lots of music. LOL I have a pair of HS8s for montitors, an RME Fireface 400 interface, and for controllers, a MASCHINE mk1 and the KONTROL S61 keyboard for my gear. For all my VSTs, I use MASCHINE and NI KOMPLETE Ultimate 11 plus most of Output's VSTs and a few from Heavyocity.. I started on hardware synths exclusivley (KORG Trinity, TRITON, TRITONS Extreme, then M3) but then got into VSTs/computer audio, starting with Ableton. However, I found that MASCHINE's workflow was much faster for my needs. With MASCHINE as my primary DAW, I currently average 1 new song every 5 days since 2011 (many different genres). Great video! Thanks guys! I gained a lot of vocal FX chain ideas, and enjoyed the info/history/stories overall!

Mr. Huart ! Do an interview with English producer OTT ! ...an artist who makes electronic music worth listening to ! (i'd bet he'd like a vacation to lovely Los Angeles anyway... who wouldn't??) ...have greatly enjoyed your "studio tour" videos ! I don't know half the stuff you guys are talking about, but i love music and i love that you and your guests have such obvious enthusiasm for it... plus i love all the racks of equipment, lit up like christmas lights, all the knobs and faders and "tech talk" and the history and on and on ! thank you ! i left a comment on one of your videos where i was an honest but complete a-hole ! (not toward you) sorry about that ! have a MARVELOUS(LY) day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (by the way - i enjoy much of OTT's music - but i do not do drugs - no interest at all)

here's a link to a form to contact OTT: ottsonic.com/contact it would be awesome if you guys could sit down in his little home studio and discuss gear and other things, but that would be problematic considering your respective locations. however his website seems to indicate that he might be on tour in the states this very month... with at least one stop in California. so maybe you guys could hook up and chat - and we could have a video of it. :-) anyway - really enjoy your youtube channel - thank you !

Is there ANY way to do that pitch delay stuff he does with that percussion at 33:30 in Logic X? I know Chris himself says it's difficult, but maybe with a stereo delay it's possible? Thanks.

Haha it's okay. I think it is from them. I noticed the sample name 'wath - afrosabar' or something. 'wath' I think being short for 'Wave Alchemy Tribal & Tech House'. It sounded really high quality in the video, so it got me curious. I've been looking for high quality tribal like samples the last couple of days and my first choice is to check out Wave Alchemy and New Loops/Biome Digital since these 2 companies make the highest quality of samples imo. I know WA have a few tribal and afro percussion packs, but somehow I missed the tech house one and never checked it out. Just did and sound and style wise it sounds like the ones in the video, so I guess it is haha.
      Thanks anyways.

I like how he mentions Moby and Prodigy as paradigmatic electronic dance music acts, conveniently sweeping under the rug 30+ years of underground techno, electro, house. Probably because you can't reduce these huge scenes to "taking someone else's ideas and manipulating them" and that arrogant looking down upon people who invented things beyond the dating back to 19th century Romantic music theory wouldn't work.

Tme slicing samples and mapping them a cross keybed as he's done here, is so easy to do in logic pro... Just Drag Sample in to the Region Right Click on the Sample, then Click convert to New Sample Track.. Only Takes 20 sec Auto Maps To esx24 sampler which is Logic stock AU plug... and Click with Transient marker and it auto Maps all Chops a cross keybed... alway best to really dig the Manuals guys and know your Shit lol.. Respect Chris tho!! lol this is Nothing New tho its a Proper old School Trick Google Todd edwards he is King of this old 90s trick. most of hes tracks full of slice up vocals

Well a good guy. He is worse than I am using the laptop mic and speakers. I use a small membrane Sontronics instrument mic. Hold it in my hand, no popscreen, no stand no nothing. Got some other big mic's somewhere. He can do a lot in Ableton. It's still good to rewire to Logic or Melodyne Studio the old version.

I hope the coffee kicks in soon!
By the way, his work is pretty cool, for the genre ((not really my thing. I'm one of the few using Ableton to make more organic sounding music I guess, though it's great to have that techno toy box when you want to add something more- synthetic))

Very daunting when someone demonstrates willy-nilly, "Oh you can do anything". Yeah great, but hey he's being using it for years - something to aim for, but like so many other programs, one is overwhelmed and really want to be able to do the same. Get put off cause our skill is pisspoor and leave it.

Inspiring thats for sure. Lovely your site - click every vid as soon as it comes on. A very difficult skill indeed and well done. You da man

I just remember when people like prince, paul McCartney and even queen weren't taking dance seriously to say the least..I do watch you geez and love all good music..I suppose I just wanted to remind people of how dance used to be perceived by musicians..having musicianship has nothing to do with having the ability to create soul..it is all within..
