Lionel Essrog (Edward Norton), a lonely private detective living with Tourette Syndrome, ventures to solve the murder of his mentor and only friend, Frank Minna (Bruce Willis). Armed only with a few clues and the engine of his obsessive mind, Lionel unravels closely guarded secrets that hold the fate of New York in the balance. In a mystery that carries him from gin-soaked jazz clubs in Harlem to the hard-edged slums of Brooklyn and, finally, into the gilded halls of New York's power brokers, Lionel contends with thugs, corruption and the most dangerous man in the city to honor his friend and save the woman who might be his own salvation.
Oscar nominee Edward Norton (“Birdman or [the Unexpected Virtue of Innocence],” “American History X,” “Primal Fear”) directed, wrote, produced and stars in “Motherless Brooklyn.” The film’s journey to the screen began in 1999 when Norton saw the cinematic potential in Jonathan Lethem’s novel Motherless Brooklyn and its unforgettable central character. But from the beginning, Norton aimed to transpose Lethem’s contemporary characters into a different period and plot and give it a distinctive atmosphere by re-setting the drama in the 1950s-a time of great change in New York City.
The film’s stellar ensemble cast also includes Bruce Willis (the “Die Hard” films, “Moonrise Kingdom”), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“A Wrinkle in Time”), Bobby Cannavale (“I, Tonya”), Cherry Jones (“Boy Erased”), Michael Kenneth Williams (“When They See Us”), Leslie Mann (“The Other Woman”), Ethan Suplee (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), Dallas Roberts (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Josh Pais (“Ray Donovan”), Robert Ray Wisdom (“The Fix”), Fisher Stevens (“The Blacklist”), with Oscar nominee Alec Baldwin (“The Cooler,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “The Departed”) and Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (“At Eternity’s Gate,” “The Florida Project”). Norton also produced the film with his Class 5 Films producing partner Bill Migliore; and MWM Studios’ Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane; and Michael Bederman. Adrian Alperovich, Sue Kroll, Daniel Nadler, Robert F. Smith, and Brian Niranjan Sheth served as executive producers.
Behind the scenes, Norton collaborated with two-time Oscar-nominated director of photography Dick Pope (“Mr. Turner,” “The Illusionist”), production designer Beth Mickle (“Drive,” “Collateral Beauty”), Oscar-nominated editor Joe Klotz (“Precious,” “The Butler”) and costume designer Amy Roth (TV’s “The Looming Tower,” “Indignation”).
Music plays an important role in setting the tone and establishing the period of “Motherless Brooklyn.” The score is composed by Daniel Pemberton (“Steve Jobs,” “All the Money in the World,” “Oceans 8,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”), and features Wynton Marsalis on the trumpet. The film also features an original song written and performed by Thom Yorke. Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Class 5 Films / MWM Studios Production, “Motherless Brooklyn.” Slated for release on November 1, 2019, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
This film has been rated R for language throughout, including some sexual references, brief drug use, and violence.

I've never seen a portrayal of Tourette's done so accurately and sincerely. He's taken seriously, his tics are realistic, it's paired with OCD symptoms. I mean, I'm amazed. I was bullied so much for my Tourette's, but some of the most hurtful comments were from people telling me that I was lying because my Tourette's wasn't what they had seen in the media, or telling me that I can't hang out with their kid because I'm going to curse. So, having an accurate portrayal means a lot. I can't wait to see it, but am not looking forward to ticcing the entire time

For more people to understand it, to not judge it, to not make constand jokes about it. I was bullied and ridiculed in highschool and even after I graduated. People didn't understand me and my tics and still don't. The struggles that we face are much greater then people know, it's an everyday struggle. @@fullmeltphil7717 I have Tourettes too and because of a lack of representation, when I was a kid my entire family would yell at me and tell me to stop, or send me to my room until "I could stop," and the doctors we saw said I was faking whatever I was doing for attention. It took years for my mom to finally stumble upon a page for Tourette's (and OCD) and then I finally saw a neurologist. The pain of not being able to stop doing something, both physical and mental, when it is bothering your family so much, and being accused of doing it for attention, was painful. Not to mention what I went through afterwards. I thought that having a diagnosis would change something but it didnt because people didn't understand it. We're not weak people, we just know how hard our lives have been because of that lack of an accurate representation and so we're thankful

@@fullmeltphil7717 Ah yes, the internet which *checks notes* gave me Tourettes.
I'm grateful to hear that you don't have any marginalizing conditions which were used to demean and attack you your entire childhood and well into your adult years. It is wonderful to not have to be subject to aggression for merely existing with a diagnosis you can't control! I really, genuinely hope that continues for you. I am not worried about having a social media limelight, but it is nice to know that maybe in the future the teachers and peers of children with TS will maybe not have such a limited scope of understanding. I also hope this applies to people in positions where they supervise employment or internship opportunities. Having people understand that this condition is painful for us and truly involuntary is very important to the wellbeing of future generations. I'm grateful you have never had to struggle with that sort of thing. I hope you never have to!

I have the audio book version on six cassette tapes as a birthday gift in 1997. It's narrated by Steve Buscemi. I've listened to it countless times. I can live with Ed Norton as Lionel ('Freak show') but I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't' cast Buscemi.

Edward Norton blows me away with every single one of his performances. There may be greater actors than him, and I respect all the greats, but what Norton does, no one can.

Whoa this cast. I read the book in high school. One of the best English class books ever.

Norton is soo underrated, my brother and I fell in love with his preformance in primal fear. One of our favor suspense/thrillers. Something that makes you think.

Massive thanks and respect to Edward Norton for this amazing portrayal of Tourette’s syndrome, you can tell he’s really put work into research and study. My sister has Tourette’s, and I’m ready to see this movie when it comes out 👍🏽

I'd replace Bale with either Taron Egerton for Rocketman, Ansel Elgort for The Goldfinch, or perhaps Willem Dafoe for The Lighthouse (unless he gets billed and campaigned for Supporting) but solid looking list.

I just saw this film on an international flight, and I really loved it. I had no idea Edward Norton directed movies. As someone with anxiety or what might be termed OCPD, I totally related to the tics. I've also been especially drawn of late to this era, and the costumes and cars were fun to see. I'm definitely going to rewatch this at home since it was hard to hear on the noisy plane.
