Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers-Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall) and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black Swan).
The film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures. Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K.

Same photographer won the Oscar a couple years back for Blade Runner 2049. I saw that three times in theaters and was absolutely mesmerized at how beautiful it was. Roger Deakins is truly amazing. If you've never seen "Road to Perdition" (also Sam Mendes/Thomas Newman), you must. One of the most well-shot films ever. One of the best cinematographers of all time (Conrad Hall) came out of retirement to shoot that movie, and a year later he was gone.

that's a common misunderstanding of WW1. Six million British soldiers were mobilised and of those just over 700,000 were killed, mostly by artillery which were pinpoint accurate due to Ariel photos and maths. To lose 1,600 men in one day of fighting (not artillery) would not have been a complete disaster and national embarrassment. Most soldiers were lucky enough to avoid offensives due to their trench rotation. You were only on the front line for 3 days in a month and unlike the Germans, the British had plenty of resources, tobacco and comforts to keep morale. It was a stalemate, a mental battle more so than a physical battle.

This film should be compulsory to watch for all those who get notions or ideas about starting wars. This film truly moved me, and that’s never happened before. There were scenes in this film that were brutal, horrific, heart wrenching, and harrowing. 1917 portrays the grim reality of being an Infantry Soldier, in what is likely to be the most vivid representation of being caught up in a war in cinematic history.
The film gave me an a new appreciation for the true horrors of war, and having been provided with an over the shoulder perspective of it here, I never want to experience it for real.

Such different conflicts. The Second World War was filled with what we might call a righteous purpose, knowing what the Nazis and Imperial Japan did to the peoples they conquered. The First World War was devoid of such higher purpose. Just proud monarchies that started fighting over essentially nothing, and quickly got to the point where they couldn't stop fighting because they'd lost so much so fast, and had to justify that loss through victory. The suffering of the soldiers (and many civilians) during that war can't be overstated. One of the most awful times in history to have been a soldier, no doubt, on any side. And for what? I wish more people would take time to study the Great War. It brings a greater understanding to some of the episodes that people know more about in the Second War. For my part the French People need never again prove their mettle in combat. Many Americans give the French a lot of guff for how quickly they capitulated to Hitler in 1940. But when you understand how hard they fought, and under the most atrocious of conditions, during the Great War, you find it easy to forgive. Those French soldiers grew up hearing stories of the horrors of Verdun, and the Somme from their fathers.

Samuel Pérez García I would disagree with you on that, there where some pretty memorable shots in the movie, won’t go into detail, but the shot in the trailer where we see him running thru the battalion of soldiers while dodging bombs left and right is a pretty memorable shot. There are more shots that still think about, but I don’t want to spoil the movie for those who haven’t seen it.
