I also recommend checking out Rethink which is a design community founded in SF but offers lots of virtual ways to connect now. HI. i am a phd student in the field of mechanical engineering. I wish to start a career in the field of product or industrial design to keep my creativity alive. I have a couple of years of experiences in the same field. I wish to know if you know any courses that would enable me to start this career path.
I think this is a two part answer! First - I think the longer you stay at a company the deeper you can get into the problem space and the more you can really contribute to the product in a big way. I think there's tons of value the longer you stay at a company and I would especially challenge more young people (not saying you are one of them) to try and stay longer at their job versus getting excited about the "next best thing" Now that said, I know myself well enough now to know that about every 2 years seek variety and change. Luckily, I've been able to find that change that I am seeking within my same company in the form of new roles, being on different teams (meaning tackling a different product area), working on team related projects, etc.. This all helps fill the gap with the variety that I am looking for and not shaking things up in the grand scheme of things has actually been so, so nice. Hope that helps!

I just graduated from undergrad with a degree in English/Creative Writing, and I'm pursuing Content Strategy roles. But, I'm definitely attracted to the visual and analytical components of product design, and I'm considering applying to a masters program in product design next fall. From my understanding, it seems like a computer science/engineering background isn't necessary for product design- what do you think? I'm not sure how much of a jump it is for me to change gears and learn an entirely new skill - I just love the idea of being creative (and well compensated)- I'd love to speak sometime to hear your thoughts if you have the time to chat :)!

I recommend people who are in college who want to get into product design to consider going to an art and design school and pursue a degree like “interaction design” or “human computer interaction” - it’s possible there are majors that are more centered around digital product design that are names other things now but I’m not 100% sure.
