When Ukraine liberated Kherson in 2022, some said Russia would quickly recapture it. They didn't. People said they'd recapture Kursk in a week. They haven't.
Why not, Ukraine is still holding onto plenty or areas in Ukraine. Its all part of the same front. Ukraine found a weak spot in Russian defensive lines, and took advantage of it.

PMCs can only operate through national sponsorship. That's the international law created after the fall of Sandline International and Executive Outcomes in the late 90s, which were professional mercenary corporations. The difference here is that the Biden claims the US is not at war with Russia. But if you're using PMCs, that means they represent the country that's sponsoring them, effectively making that country by proxy at war. That's why it's a problem. These aren't just run of the mill war tourists if they're legit PMCs. But objectively, what I found leads me to believe it's not a legitimate PMC. More than likely, it's just a bunch of LARPers with dreams of becoming the next Blackwater, calling themselves FOG (as in "The fog of war"), fronting like a PMC, who bit off more than they could chew, because they've been reportedly killed already.

Russian mercenaries could have been used. Ukraine has a strict policy on using volunteer specialists and that is in stabilising their Defences. Further Ukrainian troops are not victimising any civilian. That does not rule out Ruskie false flag operations in own territory as scorched earth policy is a strategy. Further the West fights without civilian hostage taking.

I dont favor losing US troops in Ukraine. But why not use US airpower in Ukraine, much less risk to US lives, but even more benefits to Ukraine. Since Ukraine needs more airpower, even more than they need more troops. Air supremacy is vital, with modern conventional armies.
