Dude, the amount of respect I have for you wearing that Britney shirt and defending rom-coms... I mean, I don't personally like pop music and I don't particularly love that genre of movies, but it's great to see a confident man talking about the things he loves without worrying he'll be seen as less of a man for just loving the things he loves. We are human after all, we should be allowed to show that we are sensitive beings too.

Couldn’t agree more about romcoms, when they’re good, they are definitely a fun time to experience. One of my favorites (not just as a romcom but in general) is Crazy, Stupid, Love because everything hits with that movie - the writing, comedy, and the romance - all top-notch!

You're a legit BAMF in your Britney shirt, setting a good example for other men, for your kids, and even for women who need to be reminded that manliness is not defined by toxic behavior. Thank you.

Exactly, i mean look at a movie like Wonder Woman. It's a movie that not just made for women simply because the main character is a women. Men can enjoy those movies too, my theater had a lot of men watching the movie. Wonder Woman is the greatest female comic book hero of all time, women enjoy reading the comics, men enjoy reading the comics too. There's no need to be ashamed of anything, movies are open widely. You don't see any filmmakers saying that a movie led by a women character can only be watched by women audience, that's stupid af. Movies are open for everyone to enjoy, there's no limitation. I'm a men and i can enjoy romcom movies if they're fun, good and entertaining. I absolutely would watch that Barbie live action movie simply because Greta Gerwig is directing it LMAO. A movie or series starring women characters, men could watch it anyways, no need to be ashamed around it. I watched HBO's Big Little Lies so many times, a series starring 5 talented actresses, where's the ashamed on that for men like me to watch it??

I don't support his decision to wear that Britney shirt, but to each their own.
I love watching movies. I can enjoy a good rom-com. Marry me, directed by Kat Coiro, was pretty bad. It wasn't terrible, but Owen Wilson and Jennifer Lopez lacked chemistry.
Owen Wilson's character, Charlie, is not very interesting. Charlie isn't charismatic, nor is he very passionate or emotional, which is fine. But that can make for a very dull rom-com.
Jennifer Lopez's character, Kat, is fine. I don't have much issue with Kat as I feel she brings the movie to life.
The relationship between Charlie and Kat never seems to be real.
The plot of the film is nothing special, but I can respect it enough to say that it's okay.
Overall, I give the film 2/5.
I think films such as Music and Lyrics, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, Bridget Jones's Diary, Notting Hill, I'll even say Sweet Home Alabama are more interesting films to look at.

I'm so glad J. Lo is bringing these kinds of movies back and I hope it brings many more, hopefully with a new generation of romcom actors and actresses (and writers!). Not strictly a romcom but definitely in this wheelhouse, I found Second Act delightful/heartwarming, which made this a must-watch for me. They're just feel good movies and we need more of them. (also in this category and underappreciated: Instant Family) While I've been happy to see a rise in these projects greenlit for streaming, you're absolutely right--they skimp on budget and scale and it would be great to see more of those original scripts and talents get major studio backing/releases more.

Dude I absolutely love the 90s and mid 2000s cheesy, feel good rom coms.
They were good because they were predictable. Whenever I felt down and wanted to watch a film to lighten the mood I'd put on a film like Clueless, 10 Things I hate about You, How to lose a guy in 10 days, knocked Up and so many more.
And this has been a big complaint from me. That the genre of these cheesy rom coms has almost died down.
Now a days movies have be serious, and romances end in tragedies and people breaking up. Or everything is just super vulgar. Where the square jawed super attractive guy gets together with the super sexy girl and they have a borderline toxic relationship.
I just miss the dynamic of the bumbling guys and shy girls, and the funny hijinks and the hilarious misunderstandings and top it all off with a very predictable, cheesy and yet feel good love confession/monologue at the end.
I hope these kind of movies become big again.

@@kingkiller5325 you know? I understand, why people get upset at others who hide behind the anonymity of social media(s) to say vile garbage, or "act out" their insecurities to complete strangers. And I also think it sucks when one defends another, in the same way, and get called a "white knight" or a "keyboard warrior", etc.etc.
Like many other areas of life, the internet can be a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation, for sure.
But, on the flip side, it allows us to connect and relate to each other, in a world where that (for whatever reason, be it geographic distance, age, profession, social construct, expectation, there is hundreds of reasons) may never happen otherwise.
And that is an awesome thing.
Hardest part is letting the good stuff in, while shrugging off the trolls and malcontents. 😏
Now, on the topic of movies: I totally understand. As a dude, most of my crew would give me a wtf look, if they walked in and I had a romcom, or even (gasp) an older, classic cartoon (old Disney or Pixar) on as background. Sometimes, it is nice to have a light, humorous vibe going on. Sometimes, it absolutely NEEDED. I love a good horror, thriller, or drama as much as the next person- but, damn, reality is negative enough. Sometimes, I just need a break.
Another great genre to break thing's up a bit, is standup comedy.

I love romantic comedies and one thing I really enjoy is seeing a branch out in the ages of the characters. Both Owen Wilson and Jennifer Lopez are over 50, which is great, because I think we are used to seeing romance as something beautiful and funny with characters that are in their 20s or early 30s, but as soon as they turn 40 the stories we see about most couples are dramas. I think this is one of the reasons I really enjoyed Juliet, Naked with Rose Byrne and Ethan Hawke as protagonists, it is a wonderful film and truly the best romantic comedy of the 2010s :)

Notting HIll is one of my favorites. My wife and I talk about this subject often: for anxious people, predictability and comfort are nice to have in some kinds of entertainment. It's the reason she and I rewatch the same handful of series also. Nothing wrong with enjoying something that's "by the numbers." Not every movie has to be innovative; it can just be good and make you feel good. Also, to your point about men feeling the need to justify seeing rom-coms: it totally is bs. Thank you for saying this Chris. I have had a love for rom-coms for a long time, but as a guy I have definitely felt a pressure to look down on them as lesser. And I'm ashamed to admit that in the past I have joined the bandwagon and made fun of rom-coms, repeating the views of some of a number of more reactionary RUclipsr reviewers, usually without even seeing the movies in question. I'm glad that in the past few years I have started to move past that, but that old way of thinking is still there - when I first saw the trailer for Marry Me, I wrote it off and thought it didn't look good. That is unfair of me. I haven't seen it yet, but I hope to this weekend. Thank you for the video, and thank you for the thoughtful and empathetic journey you've been on with your channel lately. It means a lot to me.

I do wish we'd had a little more of their romantic relationship fleshed out with more scenes of them as an actual couple before the conflict with the ex because the conflict sort of needed a better transition scene IMO. I'm also a sap for cute cheesy rom-coms, so more romance between Kat & Charlie would have been awesome... I'd have loved an end shot of a couple scenes of them getting re-married to kind of tie in her asking him to marry her "again", but I still loved it. Maybe the DVD/Blu-ray will have deleted and extended scenes....one can hope, lol. Soundtrack is awesome as well, so this really was such an enjoyable experience. I love rom-coms! I mean when they're good. When Harry Met Sally is simply one of my favorite films. Who doesn't want that to happen in their lives? I think part of the reason why rom-coms don't appear as often anymore is the gender/sexual landscape. What is love, and how do you tell a story about it to include everyone? I personally probably wouldn't go watch a movie about a gay couple. This is not because I'm homophobic, it just doesn't apply to me, nor can I relate to it, being a straight man. If it's a part of the story in a show in or in a movie, that's cool. But perhaps that is the problem. I dunno, those are just my honest opinions and thoughts

But I'm glad you did because romantic comedies offer such an interesting social commentary on society for the reasons you describe how as a young boy, there was this social pressure and judgment.
