Great comparison but the 36mm looks waaaay better on your wrist. The 36mm is more refined than the 39mm. Which wears more like a 41mm. Both are amazing pieces but the 36mm is a winner if you have a wrist smaller than 7 inches. The 39 looks great on big wrists but it looks like it’s swollen on smaller wrists.

The 36mm is too small. I tried it on at my AD and I burst out laughing the second I put it on. And I have smaller than average wrists. Putting the romantisicm about the historic accuracy of the dimension aside for a second, it's a ridiculous size for a sportsmodel in 2021. This was my experience: Bought the newest-model (124270) 36 for my 6.5 wrist. The case actually measures closer to 35.5 on my caliper. When on the wrist, I found the watch having a "boy size" look, for want of a better term. Large step down from my daily 40mm GMT-Master. After one week, I jumped on an opportunity to trade my 36 for the 39 Explorer. Could not be happier with that decision. Originally, though reluctantly, had opted for the 36 after reading a lot of posts from folks with similar-size wrists as mine, touting perfection in the fit of the 36. Perhaps for them, but a costly error for me. If you normally wear a 39mm or 40mm watch, or even larger, you WILL notice a significant difference with the 36. Consider that carefully before plunking down your hard-earned cash. I know I should have!

Being very objective - The 39mm explorer fits better on your wrist and most men's wrists. Most people who say that 36mm fits better usually come in with the knowledge that the original explorer design was at 36mm and are fed with the idea about too much "space" in the dial. But objectively, the 39mm fits better.. just try on both and ask your wife standing beside you, which one looks better. :)

Although Rolex watches were issued to members of the expedition they were not worn to the summit. This was a very British expedition using only British equipment and so the watch that made it to the summit in 1957 was a Smiths watch. That is why Rolex never claim in their advertising that they were first on the summit, and why they call their watch the Explorer and not the Everest. This name is reserved for the Smiths Everest.

When is a watch too big or too small? Here is a question for the viewers. For the large 42+ mm watch wearers, do you regularly take the watch off when you get home? And are you more likely wear a smaller watch longer?
Not all men have large risk. Also when you see a large guy with an even larger watch, to me it seems out of balance. But these are personal tastes. The average wrist size in north america is roughly 7.25" and with the rise in "arm presence" design in watches, I would think the 36 would seem small. But again, it all depends on whether you have a large wrist and also whether watch presence is a must. But I would differ in categorizing this as a woman size.

Hands down! The 36mm is superior to the 39mm on virtually all wrists. The blending of case & bracelet is superior, the movement is superior, the proportions are superior. That said, if you have wrists like Brock Lesnar, go for the 39mm :-)

I was on a list for the 36 mm, but when I heard it was actually 35.3, I took my name off the list. It is a very nice watch, but that is too small. Even for my 6.5" wrist.

Looks like 'his 'n hers' sizes. For me I would take the man-size watch, the 39mm. Of course, I realise some men have thin wrists and would suit the dainty version.
