Glad I found this video. My drive (1tb) died yesterday. I submitted my RMA. I purchased my drive Feb 2021 and it does fall within the range of the failing drives. I own three ether Samsung SATA drives. Now I want to test them all :(

The price difference is massive. Like 9 times as much massive. Is not like we are gonna throw just $50 more or something.

had the same thing happen to me. I have experienced read errors and checksum errors from it. I used it in a zfs raid array. and ironically it is the most expensive of the bunch. and all other brands survived (crucial and timec), while 870 evo 1tb failed. luckily, their customer service is quite excellent. I was able to send the drive back with a prepaid bag mailed to me by samsung. and a replacement drive arrived today. I was expecting to see an refurnished drive like a lot of people on the forums. but to my surprise, I got a brand new one with zero bytes written. so although the quality of the drive should have been better. or Samsung should have a official recall. but if you have a faulty drive, I think Samsung will provide you with a replacement, so definitely contact their customer support.

Does this issue affect OEM versions of Samsung NVME drives like the PM9A1. From what I understand, it's the OEM equivalent to the 980 pro in terms of specs and build. My issue is that the Magician software doesn't work with OEM versions.

Same problem (read errors) on a 512 Gb 870 EVO sata (2.5") after ~ 90 days life time and 1.753Tb written (90 days of continuous usage, that means ~ 9 months of 8 hours per day usage). Can't be fixed with something like chkdsk, because it freezes at that block without doing anything (great dealing with bad blocks from a disk utility, makes you miss the old days when you get a read error, being able to ignore it and get to the next block allowing you to actually get some data recovered. Guess the new narrative is as long as the failure is not recognized it does not exist😂). What a 'great' SSD.

your drive is still technically "brand new" with only 1.7tb written. when I experienced problem with mine, I had 67Tb written in less than 1 year. get it RMAed as soon as you can. i did it without providing a receipt.

I swapped out my original WD 256g nvme ssd main/C: for a Samsung 980 Pro 2TB with heat sink nvme main/C:. Cloned it with Samsung Magician; It estimated 30 minutes to clone, but finished in 17:50. I'm keeping the original WD stored away in the transfer case in case of emergency. Plan to get two Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SSD's for secondary internal storage. (cheaper for two than a single 4TB, and if one goes down, I don't lose everything all at once.) I still have a bunch of old HDD's boxed up from years ago that all work, so those may be useful someday.

If ever the new ssd drive fails, can i use the old hdd again that i cloned? I know I'll loose some data but is that okay? I have to redownload windows updates again right? But it should work as before i swapped to an ssd?

Thanks for letting me that valuable thing "Don't put any important on these". I ordered 2 of these 870 evo 1TB ones on amazon for both of my laptop and my workstation 😞 Not sure which manufacturing lot ones will I get. Hey, couple of questions if you can clarify, appreciate that.
    1) Any idea of 2023 batch lot failing too?
    2) are other brand SSD more reliable than Samsung EVO? Which ones?
Barracuda metal ones were much much more reliable than these.
Finally, God bless me & my data.

    • @TheDutchTexanGames

The later ones should be solid. As far as reliability of other brands go it's dealers choice. Samsung is generally pretty darn good, my main SSD drive is still going strong after years of use. Every manufacturer can run into issues and they take care of you. It's just a bummer when you lose all that data...

I have a 2 year old 870 EVO 500GB NVME that went bad this month. It is recognized by Windows but unable to open it and trying to open Disk manager or any disk tools would freeze or would fail to load, however I attached it with an external NVME adaptor and thankfully a Recovery software worked great and allowed me to take everything off that was not backed up. It is still under warranty but I prefer to keep it in case I discover something I need form it and I have other drives, I replaced it with an 870 PRO 1TB I had sitting around. I also had a failed SanDisk external drive SSD, not good. I did not even use it much at all, it was just for transferring items usually to friends so at least it had nothing important on it.

i have the 250gb model crapped on me a year ago. i bought it in mid 2021 and used it for about 4 months. then it'd show a few signs of dying such as random BSODs with unexpected_store_exception error code. i did a fresh reinstall and the same problem persist. i didnt know what the problem was as i moved on to another new ssd of mine which has 500gb of storage and used to this day and still has no issue. so i turned the samsung ssd drive into a linux drive. few days went on it'd work just fine. and after that the OS would just lockup and i cant do anything. at that point i concluded that my samsung ssd has died on me

On Samsung SSD sata drives and NVMe drives build in 2020/2021
the Firmware shipped with the drives has a bug which kills your drive. So update the firmware ASAP
I've updated all my drives and they are working perfectly
A mate of mine purchased the same drives at the same time at the same shop as I did ....BUT.... He DIDN'T update the firmware and all his drives have failed
So run the Samsung tool test for bad blocks if you have no bad blocks or only have a couple of bad blocks run the firmware update it will help stop the bad blocks getting worse if you have them and if you don't have them it will stop you getting them from the bug in the original firmware.

Add me to the list. I bought my 1TB 870 EVO in May of 2021. In the past two months the number of bad sectors suddenly soared to 48,468 all over the drive. The file damage included files that I had written to the drive two years ago and never touched. The total damage was 288 files, mostly temporary browser files fortunately. Oddly I had just replaced a conventional 2TB drive that had 68TB written to it over a period of eleven years before it began failing and it failed in a much less catastrophic manner.
For comparison I've also been using a cheaper Samsung 500GB 840 EVO for nine years (it reports 129,521 hours which is impossible because that's 14 years). It's had 38.7 TB written to it and has exactly *zero* reallocated sectors. I'm going to keep my eye on the reallocated sectors and for any read failures during backups.
