Great information. Learned a couple of things here. Thanks for this informative video. These drives are same price now, both on sale for Black Friday ($115AUD). The review helped a lot - but since they're basically equal in performance, my decision came down to past experience. As a system builder, I had countless problems with Crucial Ballistix DDR2 many years ago. Crucial was great about quickly replacing the faulty modules, but each replacement also only lasted a few months - some wouldn't boot from the start. My next personal choice will be a M.2 Crucial MX500 SSD. Thanks for the video!
You are the first person in the world to actually say that cloning an OS drive to an SSD drive probably won't work!!! I subscribed immediately. I recently had this exact experience with the MX500. Tried 3 different cloning programs, different ways, and even bought an off-line hardware cloner: all failed. The information that Samsung's cloning software is the most reliable, is good to know AND WILL HELP ME DECIDE WHICH SSD TO BUY because of it. If I ever need to clone a drive with my OS and programs on it, it WILL be a Samsung.
Wow, you're quite the educated reviewer! Me, just a regular guy. But even though so much of what you were sharing was over my head, you succinctly gave me the "pearls" I was looking for--in a friendly manner no less. I also very much appreciate the respect you have for your viewers by NOT WASTING OUR TIME with the some of the outlandish kind of narcissism that's so prevalent on RUclips. Most videos I watch could generally be done in about a 1/3 of the time or less. Every minute of your review was "packed" and useful. - Great details, great perspectives, great review!
Very good review! You are as clear as it can be and you take your time to explain it well. I did purchase the Samsung and Crucial SSD drives and they work w/out a glitch so far. Someone mentioned to me that the SSD drives in general fail within three years time. And from your explanation on this video you are giving more confidence that they last a lot longer and that is what I had heard when I decided to buy them. To me also since there are no moving parts like regular HD they should last a lot longer. Also I understand that they should not be filled to capacity since the SSD drives need extra space to write randomly to the drive. Thanks for the video.
I recently was making comparisons between SSDs. After a couple days of research, I narrowed it down to a $399.99 WD blue 2TB, a $419.99 MX 500 2TB, and a $450 Samsung 860 EVO 2TB. After comparing cost, benchmarks, and brand history, I settled on the MX500. Between the WD and MX500 there is enough of a performance difference and more brand history for Crucial that the MX500 made sense even if it was $20 more. Between the MX500 and 860 EVO it's constant stream of traded blows, so the $30 premium for the Samsung drive just doesn't make sense. I am a hardcore Samsung SSD fan, but I already have an 850 PRO for my OS drive, and the technology for SSDs has come such a long way in the past five years that deciding on Crucial was a no brainer. I will always recommend Samsung if cost is no object, but if you want the best value you can get for what is still insanely close to top tier SATA III performance, the MX500 is the one to get. Now, if all you want is the SSD experience and you don't want to buy a sketchy second rate SSD, the WD blue line is the best bang for your buck.
@@arthurwintersight7868 50 USD for 1tb Samsung Evo 870, today. This is cheap. I wish they could come up with faster small file or 4k RANDOM read /write speeds. People repeat the mantra about SATA SSD's having reached their potential due to SATA interface limitations, ...but there is still room for improvement in random read speeds vs sequential. I would love to buy in 2024 a SATA SSD with a 100 mb/s 4K random read speed vs only 40-ish mb/s for the Evo 870. It would make for a much snappier experience.
I watched this video years ago. and here I am again after buying my first Crucial SSD. I kept coming back to this video before I made the purchase a few days back. Thank you for the learnings.
Thanks. But, as with many products, the question is how will these drives behave after a year of active use? Will they all still have the same performance or will some of them slow down? Remember the old Evo 840 slowdown bug... And now we have also Western Digital Blue 500GB.
11:44 Can't thank you enough for including the M2 SATA vs 2.5 SATA information. I looked far and wide for that information and came up empty. A whole lot of M2 SATA vs M2 Nvme comparisons but I needed to know if there were any performance differences between M2 SATA vs 2.5. You're my official go-to on all things tech and pc-related.
In the real world what also really matters is that the disk is reliable and it last, from what I have watched and read both these are reliable; however, the Samsung Evo apparently has a longer life span than the Crucial MX500.
You, sir, are by FAR the most thorough, detail-oriented reviewer I have ever witnessed! Thank you for providing such in-depth comparison and analysis of these drives, and for providing so much background technical information regarding this technology. I can't wait to see more of you reviews!
Have been watching some of your videos for some time and I can't even found words to thank you for all this work you have done, you have a perfect accent that I can fully understand (spanish is my native language), plus you do all those benchmarks, give your personal opinion, give us the best tech deals and explain eveything. Thank you so much!
There's an exception to the rule of buying the cheapest. If it's for a laptop, idle power consumption will probably make a noticeable difference in battery time. For that you only need to check the charts on a site that benchmarks for that. The MX300 does pretty well there. A couple SSDs do better. Some will probably leave the owner furious wondering why their battery drains so fast. Those tuned for performance ignore tuning for idle power consumption because of the delay {unnoticeable for most uses} to wake up from the deeper sleep states. Just something to keep in mind for people looking to upgrade their portable device.
I cloned an Intel M.2 sata 256GB to a Crucial MX500 M.2 sata 500GB with Acronis and was pleasantly surprised with the automatic resizing and it only taking 1hr20mins. The Crucial drive worked perfectly. Runs 550 Mbps as per spec.
Oh my god, this is so incredibly helpful! I am an idiot and before this and another video I watched, I had NO idea whatsoever about how SSD work. I didn't know about QLC and TLC, didn't understand the difference between MD.2 and didn't even know what benchmarks do. Now I think I can confidently choose between the 860QVO and the Crucial MX500. Thank you so much!!
I know this is a 2 year old video, though funnily enough I am still rocking my M.2 850 512gb evo and mx300 750gb from 2016. Things still feel real snappy on them, especially with the former as my boot drive!
I would like to point out that Serial ATA is NOT controller Serial ATA can be Host Bus Adapter, but NOT controller controller is on HDD or on SSD and NOT on Main Logic Board nor within chipset last time you could have had controller was at the time of ST-xxx ATA have removed controller from computer and moved it directly to the drive making whole design simpler and cleaner please do not use controller to describe HBAs as this is very very different thing HBA is just an interface and in fact if it comes to ATA there is almost NO LOGIC between ISA/PCI and ATA - it connects directly or almost directly (with buffers) Serial ATA is close to same thing - connects almost directly from PCIe to SATA, you get same architecture - same decoupling capacitors (on SATA HDD/SSD both TX and RX lines have decoupling capacitors; on PCIe card only one side is PCIe card, other side is on Main Logic Board) Basically you can run both SATA (or SAS) and PCIe for as far as you wish - all you need it a transformer for each data line pair and decoupling capacitors, you may even boost voltage, if you wish, as long as you will bring it back to required level on both ends.

I am using the Samsung 4TB and 2TB Evo 860, and the Crucial MX 500 2TB SSDs in my Xbox1X, and love them. I just upgraded my PS4 Pro to the 4TB 860 QVO and love the speed. Great review.
These two SSD models are the ones I am having trouble choosing between! After watching this video I am thinking the Crucial is the one to go for as it is £30 cheaper than the Samsung. Thank you!
If you want 'performance' And can afford it.... Samsung. Otherwise, for the 'average' user who's looking for performance while watching one's budget... Crucial. The price difference is relatively small but Samsung obviously costs more considering the brand name. The Crucial 1TB SSD was currently listed ~$200 while the Samsung version was slightly higher in many places. Managed to get the Crucial MX500 1Tb SSD for ~$180 excl tax which was relatively affordable considering that SSD prices are Still relatively Expensive! Note that Crucial LIES on its boxes that the software Is included when it's Not! The buyer must go to Crucial's website to be redirected to download the Acronis software. Also, you'll need to buy an adapter Separately for the data transfer! Acronis cloning for Crucial stunk as I had issues with the software. EaseUs or Macrium has decent Free versions of their drive cloning software. Samsung software, based on many reviews, is ONLY good for Samsung SSDs. A 1Tb SSD 'should' last more than 3-5 years which is more than enough time for the average computer user as that's about the time to upgrade to a newer PC/laptop. For laptop users, if you're laptop has a 2d drive slot, use the HDD as a file drive so the SDD life would be extended as the SDD is used only to store the OS and other various software. Same basis goes for PC users.
It's like being in a time musheen seeing you go through the prices on these. It brings me back to when 500GB SSD hard drive was like 'unobtaneum' price-wise. The Samsung at that time was $340 per TB! Right now the newer (but almost the same) Samsung 870 is just over $100 per TB (when you wait for the right day that prices come down) when getting a 2TB drive. And that brings me back to the future and how we now run around with multiple drives many over 1TB. I want even more drives! But I don't want to run ahead of prices. Each time I 'really need' another 2TB drive I find them cheaper than the last time I got one. Now I'm starting to regard my older 1TB drives as 'too small' and 'tying up the SATA ports' so I'm slowly upping to 4TB drives and moving the 500GB and 1TB to my older computers where they might get used one day, maybe no. And Samsung... thank you ever so much for that Magician software. My next 4TB will free up a 1TB that I'll be able to easily clone into my mom's computer! I think the software from Samsung is worth paying more for the drives.
Exactly what I need, an unbiased explanation. I never believe in advertising marketing or stick to certain brands. Self tests & real experiments are more convincing.
Thanks for the very useful review. Just ordered the Crucial at a discount. I'll clone my system drive, but would have to pay $50 more for the EVO. Not paying that much just for the migration tool. Hopefully I'll manage :-o
I have had an MX500 on a 780i motherboard for over 3 months & it has radically improved the drive speeds just the job to breathe life into a 11 year old system. Not all SSD's are compatible but the MX500 will run on most boards just check your board with their tool, the only downside is that the power connector is a bit flimsy so be careful when connecting/disconnecting it.
Thanks for the comparison! Good stuff. I know it's been 2 years since this post but I've had different recent experiences with the 2 cloning programs mentioned. The Samsung Data Migration tool is proprietary. Both the source and the target drives have to be Samsungs and additionally, can only source clone from the current OS drive. The Acronis True Image will clone its source from any drive in the computer and target any drive. The current OS drive does not have to be the source and can be any brand drive. I think that's a major plus on side of the Acronis. I would def lean towards the Samsung "drive" as opposed to the Crucial but the cloning option tips the scales in the other direction. I'd be interested in your thoughts on that. Thanks!
Here in December 2018 I purchased a brand new Crucial MX500 for $64 from NewEgg.. An awesome price for a drive that was easy to install and it revived my old T430 and gave it new life.

I'm gonna receive my mx500 tomorrow...!!! I never used an ssd before (I was using a WD hdd, old and slow...)
Damn, I replaced every laptop and PC that had a mechanical drive years ago. You must be happy now, lmao
Hot brunettes are great but I prefer PC Ned Flanders 😂
Very good review! You are as clear as it can be and you take your time to explain it well. I did purchase the Samsung and Crucial SSD drives and they work w/out a glitch so far. Someone mentioned to me that the SSD drives in general fail within three years time. And from your explanation on this video you are giving more confidence that they last a lot longer and that is what I had heard when I decided to buy them. To me also since there are no moving parts like regular HD they should last a lot longer. Also I understand that they should not be filled to capacity since the SSD drives need extra space to write randomly to the drive. Thanks for the video.
Top notch review. Reviews also creates ease of mind.
Watched 2 reviews on SSD and appreciated it a lot, thanks.
One of the clearest, most helpful videos I've seen in a while.
Helped me understand what I should look for to upgrade my Xbox One X.
Thanks!
I recently bought a WD Blue 2TB NVMe for $120 and a Samsung 870 Evo 2TB for $160.
SSD prices were insane 4 years ago.
Whats best for ps4?
"In the real world what matters is how much money you spend to buy them" - totally agree (>_
Absolutely brilliant review - thank you so much you gave me the information and knowledge to make a sensible and effective choice!
Have been watching some of your videos for some time and I can't even found words to thank you for all this work you have done, you have a perfect accent that I can fully understand (spanish is my native language), plus you do all those benchmarks, give your personal opinion, give us the best tech deals and explain eveything.
Thank you so much!
Wow. Your teeth look fabulous.
And you remind me of old times.
Mind blown 🤯
Already own both, but didn’t know all that ...
Things still feel real snappy on them, especially with the former as my boot drive!
thank you for the in-depth description of ssds, i definitely learnt a lot from you
Thank you so much I was so confused I checked up so many reviews but never thought like this thanks for the knowledge.
Great information and presentation! I reckon this is easily the best computer hardware & software review channel on RUclips 👍
Cloning was my big thing thanks for talking about it the best one for cloning Samsung 860 EVO for sure 100%
Every time one of his videos comes up, I can't stop myself from continuously clicking the 0 key on my num pad. i'm amused by the easiest things.
I would like to point out that Serial ATA is NOT controller
Serial ATA can be Host Bus Adapter, but NOT controller
controller is on HDD or on SSD and NOT on Main Logic Board nor within chipset
last time you could have had controller was at the time of ST-xxx
ATA have removed controller from computer and moved it directly to the drive making whole design simpler and cleaner
please do not use controller to describe HBAs as this is very very different thing
HBA is just an interface and in fact if it comes to ATA there is almost NO LOGIC between ISA/PCI and ATA - it connects directly or almost directly (with buffers)
Serial ATA is close to same thing - connects almost directly from PCIe to SATA, you get same architecture - same decoupling capacitors (on SATA HDD/SSD both TX and RX lines have decoupling capacitors; on PCIe card only one side is PCIe card, other side is on Main Logic Board)
Basically you can run both SATA (or SAS) and PCIe for as far as you wish - all you need it a transformer for each data line pair and decoupling capacitors, you may even boost voltage, if you wish, as long as you will bring it back to required level on both ends.
Man i have watched 10 reviews from you......you ever make a bad one? Top notch stuff keep up the good work.
I thought the girl in the thumbnail was your daughter, well played.
funny meme
@Seth Foli, here in the US we call that Click-bait .....lol
Seth Foli yeah
He would be the coolest dad though 😄
Do you think this man would put his real daughters picture up so you horn dogs can bust all Kindza Nutz on yourselves. This dude is smarter than that bruh.
I have been looking for a review on specifically the issues you covered in this video. Well the search is over and I now know what to buy. The review and presentation in my opinion is excellent. Keep the reviews coming and thank you for sharing you knowledge.
I always buy Crucial SSDs when I do new builds or upgrades for friends, family and customers. I have never had issues with any Crucial drive that I have purchased. The Crucial SSD may not be fancy looking but it does perform.
Great review, you speak very clearly and are objective 👍
I always wonder how come you have only 377k subs. I found your content among the most informational across youtube. Keep up the great work and thank you so much.
You are helping people (with honesty included) and I respect you enough to get notifications from you. I can count all my notification subscriptions on one hand. Thank You.
Thank you for giving a clear understanding.. thumbs up
I am using the Samsung 4TB and 2TB Evo 860, and the Crucial MX 500 2TB SSDs in my Xbox1X, and love them. I just upgraded my PS4 Pro to the 4TB 860 QVO and love the speed. Great review.
I got a 1tb samsung 860 evo for 120 bucks on black friday.
I got a 1tb MX500 for $95 on google express with an easter coupon.
Got 250 GB evo for 56 bucks dammit
Just got a MX500 2TB recently! Love it
as always very good video with clear explaination
Wow you explain stuff so well, so clearly. This is the first video of yours I've seen and I'm subscribing. Thanks!
Awesome, thank you!
Learned so much more than what I came for, and thus made better decisions. Thank you!
Thanks!
As far as I know only the target has to be Samsung- but yes, it has limitations and is clearly meant to silo people into Samsung drives.
Just picked up the 500Gb Crucial MX500 for $57.99. What a difference a year makes!
from where?
Amazon
Here in December 2018 I purchased a brand new Crucial MX500 for $64 from NewEgg.. An awesome price for a drive that was easy to install and it revived my old T430 and gave it new life.
I refuse to click on click bait vids. Oh wait
You are a true professional. Just found your channel and was refreshed to hear solid and concise facts. You have a sub
Thanks and welcome
The grills r back
Man! Tooo many useful information and this is the best tech review and comparison I have seen and encountered.
You had me at "perceptual difference" (or words to that effect). Subscribed!
Have a Seagate 2TB FireCuda SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive)($99); Worth upgrading to a 2TB Evo 860 2TB ($330)?
If you need to work with a ton of data quickly (as with programming or database), rendering tasks (including graphic design) or VM's, yes, worth the upgrade.
In all my years watching tech videos, this is the most compact, sincere, informative video I've ever seen. Keep up the good job!
Very nice guy I wish him success on RUclips
Wow good work.
The thing that amazed me is not only the stats that are showed but more is the host's talking skill, like a salesman, fluently, never-stop and still stick with the point.
I mean, his talking skill is really professional, can be a model for those who wants to learn English.
Still, well done and thank you for your useful advices^^
look like a real life PC expert informative and straight to the point
is great to see a video with the real world performance seal of approval from mr deals!!!!
i don't like GTA, I'm more of a tomb raider kind of guy 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Well, sorry about the game of choice, it is something I'm used to testing :)
The effect would be the same either way :)
Lara Croft is so hot. She's better looking than Angelina Jollie, lol.
Great review video!
