AKA positional sparring. My old coach did this exclusively for fundamental classes. Great for building confidence/skill but it's kind of tough to go from dumping your gas tank to managing energy in a 5-6 min roll.
We do this at the place I train for the first 30 t0 40 minutes of the 130min training time, and it helps my game tremendously. We will start from the choke with one arm trapped when you have the guys back, the kimura, a leg lock........ any bad place top and bottom.
