5 Things to do while waiting for 10th Edition:
1- Stare longingly at your unwinnable Guard army whispering "This time" to yourself.
2- Praise the Emperor
3- Spend your money on literally anything else (It's all up in the air anyway)
4- Set up a pyre for all of your 9th Edition books you've been steadily collecting
5- Decide against destroying your 9th eds because you remember how you spent 70% of 9th Edition in fact playing 8th edition while waiting for the rules to catch up.
Just paint and buy cool models. Don't worry about what the rules may be. You can always make a list out of your favorite stuff
You can use all those nice minis to play other games like One Page Rules Grimdark Future

Just like 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and finally 9th. Return to kino like 2nd - 4th editions.
Great advice. I'd love a video about where to start when "building an army". How do you know what to buy? What's the first step? I know everyone says "choose what you think looks cool" and that's great, but how many of the things should I buy? How do they fit together as an army? Can I do that before 10th comes out or will 10th Ed rules define how I create an army?
Usually each edition will have rules to explain what an army composition should look like. For example, for 9th edition (and a few previous ones), there is something called a “forced org chart:” each unit has a designated army role (your space marine captain is an HQ, your space marine intercessor squad is a Troops choice, your dreadnought is a heavy support, etc), and the chart will show you how many units of each type you can have in your army. Some things, such as troops and an HQ, you also need a minimum amount.
10th edition seems to have some pretty big shakeups to army composition, such as the removal of the forced org chart, so it might be worth holding off on trying to build an entire army until the new edition rules are released. As a beginner it would probably be a lot easier to just learn that set of rules as opposed to figuring out the current set rules and having quite a bit of things all shaken up. That being said, if you are really itching to get into 40K there’s no harm and trying to learn 9th!
One good avenue would be picking up a “combat patrol” box of a faction you are interested in. Units have an associated point costs, and a standard game of 40K is made of of units totaling 2K points. a combat patrol box is usually roughly 500pts, which is the lowest amount of points you can use to play a game of 40K and where most people start, myself included.
If you started off with a combat patrol box, you should have enough to play a small size game of 40K, giving you enough to build, paint, and learn the basics. All of that will be easily transferable to 10th. Furthermore, in 10th edition, games workshop is working on a game-mode in 40K that just uses the contents of each combat patrol box, so your purchase of one would still be relevant. The reason I say it might not be ideal to work towards building an entire army right now is because with the changes to army composition, you might find yourself having put a lot of time and energy into building, painting, and learning to use a unit that might not fit in your new army. This is something that happens to everybody as you build up your collection, but as a new player it can be a bit of a feelsbad moment.

I will build and paint however because it does not matter at the end of the day.
Just bought the starter paint set and the sister of battle kill team set. Excited to try something a bit harder (coming over from building Gundam models)

I started playing in January this year and was THIS close to buying an Ork codex. I'm glad I resisted the temptation since the 10th edition was announced just a few days later. Now I'm just finishing up my boyz and picking up some Adepta Sororitas in the near future.
Me and my friends decided to paint up a new Combat Patrol each to have them ready by release to immediately test the balancing between them and the new rules. Got a nice hobby buzz going.

My buddies chose Chaos Space Marines, Guard, and Tyranids. Aeldari for me and Necrons for the Mrs.
And, yeah, your suggestion to paint terrain is something I'll also probably do. The stuff needs some paint.
I would add go through all your previous codexes, it might just give you some inspiration for something new with an existing army
I feel now is an excellent time to pick up a Combat Patrol. The new game mode sounds interesting!

Best thing to do while u wait is paint ur pile of shame (opportunity) finish up ur armies for 10th! Basing, edge highlights, transfers might as well do it all while u wait

I got around 250 Imperial Romans and Early Germans in 10mm for half what I would have payed GW for the latest Kill Team box that they refused to ship to me...
I was really looking forward to play Boarding Actions but I am sick of GWs fomo and scarcity tactics and will give historicals a go now.
