I test out Nissan's first EV crossover the Ariya. I was blown away with the quality of this car - but does its EV chops measure up to the field? Is this the best Japanese EV in 2023? Does it simply cost to much for what it offers?
The all-new 2023 Nissan Ariya, Nissan's first all-electric crossover SUV, offers powerful acceleration and smooth, quiet operation, and, with an EPA estimated range of up to 304 miles for the Venture+ model, Ariya is the perfect partner for daily commutes and road trips alike.
Built on an all-new Alliance-developed EV platform, Ariya is the ultimate expression of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, Nissan's vision to further improve the appeal of its vehicles and achieve its ultimate goal of a future with zero tailpipe emissions and virtually zero vehicle fatalities.
The Nissan Ariya's all-electric drivetrain is an example of seamless integration of advanced EV technology, integrating excellent power delivery, charging capabilities and extended range. With four core models offered, including two-wheel-drive and all-wheel- drive versions, Ariya is designed to meet the driving needs of a wide range of customers.
Both Ariya front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models offer a choice of 63 kWh or 87 kWh of usable battery capacity - ideal for urban commuters and first time EV owners looking for quality and style in their next-generation EV.
Staying true to Nissan's heritage of producing fun-to-drive, exciting cars, Ariya's all-new EV platform has been optimized to deliver exceptional handling. The battery pack sits under the center of the vehicle to ensure a low center of gravity and near-equal weight distribution, front and rear.
ProPILOT Assist 2.0 is the newest iteration of Nissan's driver assistance technology. It expands on ProPILOT Assist, allowing attentive drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel under certain conditions, helping reduce the driver's workload in single-lane highway traffic. In addition, ProPILOT Assist 2.0 also supports multi-lane highway driving tasks such as lane changes, passing and highway exiting.
The Ariya embodies Nissan's philosophy of designing vehicles around the driver that is both intuitive and exciting. This includes equipping it with the latest in connectivity, including a new human-machine interface and firmware updates over the air.
Nissan's intelligent personal assistance technology features a hybrid voice recognition system with advanced natural language understanding technology to handle in-vehicle assistance without the driver taking their eyes off the road.
The vehicle also includes Amazon Alexa® to help customers simplify and organize their lives. Alexa can play music, place calls, listen to audiobooks, control smart home devices, and more, with just voice commands. Both systems work hand-in-hand to provide a seamless, tailored user experience, whether during a daily commute or weekend trip.

We bought Ariya (premium version) instead model Y, ultra quiet, premium interior, 90 Kwh battery (around 580km/360 miles of range). And we don't like so strong instant acceleration because my wife could get sick when she is not driving, so Ariya is perfect to us. The only mistake from Nissan was branded it as Nissan instead of Infinity. Nice to see more people enjoy this car.
IMO, better to band it as a Nissan. Infiniti carries bigger expectations on interior refinement and overall refinement so a better Nissan has a different expectation than a borderline Infiniti.
They can come out with an Infiniti version later when they can get more batteries, also the Nissan global dealership network is much larger than Infiniti.
I agree. The Ariya is the best Japanese EV right now. Nissan should've branded it an Infiniti and justified the high price a little better.
Built quality is better than Tesla.
Oh definitely yes!
The sky is blue too 😅
An easy task to accomplish 😄
Any other mainstream car manufacturer is better.
KirkK • It's a good build, but Nissan can do better : a simpler design, a lighter model, and at a lower price.
This is a good showcase of what’s to come from Nissan. I’m glad that they got a decent, competitive EV here in the market. If they’d improve charging times and range a bit, they’d be closer to class leading. As it stands, this is middle of pack, which is okay for their first product on this new EV platform.
You like those kids slaving for your virtue signaling, don't you?
Dude, have you ever thought that the whole EV market came with a competition against the nissan leaf?
This is what the BZ4X could’ve been. Great job Nissan. Carwow did a range test, and after the Tesla, this Ariya lasted the second longest. The other contestants were a Mercedes, BMW, Genesis and VW ID bus. Anyway, I’m saying it’s the best car in its class.💪
Nothing wrong with Bz4x, 400km range, 10 years warranty.
@@avdp9095a lot is wrong about the BZ4X it’s great to drive when it’s drivable
@@chezzyperson3339 What’s wrong? Can’t just say wrong without proving it.
@@chezzyperson3339 nonsense, it is a bev with a relativly small battery pack and efficient ev motor, 10 year warranty etc etc. Recently it was tested with the id4..... the Bz4x performed very good.
@@avdp9095 what channel
This confirms how biased and critical the guys over at Out of Spec are. They called the interior cheap and said it had poor build quality compare to the ID.4 and Model Y and I was completely dumbfounded by that. Every other review I’ve seen had been along the lines of what you pointed out here and the Platinum is even nicer with the blue Napa leather and suede (which is the one OOS had. Smh). But, really Nissan has been doing really well with interior quality since the Rogue.
The Ariya suffered from a terrible timeline. It’s transition from concept to production was killed by COVID and Nissan took a huge blow with their supply chain. Never mind the internal conflicts going on during that time as well. AND THEN the tax incentive was pulled right before it launched. Like literally everything was against this car and I kinda feel bad for Nissan cuz damn, they couldn’t catch a break. Lol I think it’s numbers suggest that it was developed much earlier then we think. I think if it had come out when it was supposed to the perception of it would be totally different, and I don’t think it would be as expensive. But I’m guessing Nissan will give it a specs boost in a couple of years.
Do you work for Nissan? 😂
I 100% agree with everything you said here!
@@teikken No. Sad that's the assumption made simply because I said something seemingly positive about Nissan.
Can’t wait to see how the Maxima EV replacement pans out which is supposed to be a raised sedan
This blows away Genesis or even any German luxury marque.
Not really. It's very competitive with them though. Just needs better charging rates
@@KirkKreifels Yeah, better charging.
Yes! I never thought of it, but this would’ve made a perfect Infiniti. It would also help the brand image too. Great idea!
Too bad it won’t come until 2027
@@chezzyperson3339 Yes. That is too late.
SECOND!!!! Best way to start my morning!!!
Good well balanced review. Mines on order in the UK😁👍
wow. beautiful design.
The Ariya is a really nice vehicle, and I like the fact that it is made in Japan. However, it has a lot of competition from the likes of Tesla, Ford, and Hyundai/Kia. Even though I’m a Nissan fan, I’m not sure if I would buy this over some of the competition. It’s good looking and I wouldn’t criticize anyone for buying one, but I don’t think it’ll be the best seller in its class.
Looks like a GM Equinox EV
Excellent
From my test drive my main two complaints are the lack of sound dampening when on the hwy and the suspension being to "floaty".
This absolutely should have been an Infiniti.
this is top drawer.
I liked the interior quality when I sat in it at the auto show however I don't feel it is Infiniti quality or higher quality than the Lexus RZ. It is considerably higher than the bZ4X, however. Overall it sounds like a reasonably good car to cross shop in its segment.
Nice review! I don't quite get why you have it as close to $60,000 - Florida tax? We bought exactly this car (except for the expensive rims you got), three months after this review, and it was about $47,800 ($52,570 minus $4750 Nissan incentives, no sales tax), and I'm happy enough with the recharge speed due to the flat curve it has, to take it on all-day road trips. The interior comfort MORE than makes up for a little longer snack or leg stretch break while recharging. But if I were going to just drive it around town, I could get an Engage trim (~$38,500), or if I wanted long trips but to spend less money, I could get a Venture trim (~$42,500).
Are you doing a video on the nismo(l?
Great futuristic design looks like it comes out from a Japanese anime. It looks amazingly even better than Model Y imo..
I hate anime now
Very nice interior including the steering wheel and dash. On a scale from 1 to 10 I'd give it 9. Mazda really needs to step up their steering wheel design.
Now if only Nissan made an EV Note or Micra.
Or a PHEV ePower
Sure, I think they should have brought this over as an Infiniti (if they're planning on keeping that brand going). It could have given them a nice new bright ray of hope for that lineup. Based on that interior, I'm wondering if there weren't original plans to bring it over as Infiniti. One thing's for sure though. They kept the pricing on it to Infiniti and beyond, especially for those optional wheels! 😄
You should also test Nissan Ariya Mismo.
Is there a reason the motors are in the front rather than rear?
The motors want to be near your teddy bear you are required to keep in the passenger seat. They like to snuggle-up. Most persons and cars like bears. I am a bear as pictured. it’s CORRECT to think that this bear has a VERY SMOOTH HEAD. You must be thinking, “does he use Head And Shoulders Shine Plus?” That would be incorrect. The answer is a bear TRADE secret. ... PACK YOUR BAGS AT ONCE!!!!! WHEREAS this bear needs one more ingredient to get such a SMOOTH HEAD. if you are guessing it’s a quality conditioner with TRUE PLANT EXTRACTS you are correct.
Correct this should be a new Infiniti J30 Truck Plus and it’s should be free. They can be the first company to not charge for their car and let you invest that money. They are so nice.
Absolutely the best BEV from Japan. Sadly, that is because the Toyota bZ4X, it's sibling Subaru Solterra, and their fancy cousin the Lexus RZ are nice cars for the parts universal to all cars, but barely pass on all the EV specific aspects.
Great interior, nice exterior. It's on my list.
Those wheels looks like the standard, but without the aero rims.
Türkiyeme ne zaman gelecek ve fiyat ne olacak. Bu araçlara sizler rahat rahat alıp alabiliyorsunuz ama bizler alamıyoruz ev parasına araba 3-4 mılyon yani 20.000 dolar Turkey
I think its a good first effort by Nissan. Still pricey though and we need all EV's to be more affordable...
Just like the Maxima, it has luxury car quality & always has.
thankfully these arent selling very well so you can get some good discounts. Nissan isnt offering the $7500 as a lease credit but you can get just as much as a discount from incentives and the dealer
At least, it's better than bz4x or Lexus RZ but yeah, too still too expensive considering its features. Anyway it's decent.
Bz and RZ have it in ride quality.... That's about it haha
@@KirkKreifelsdo they ride better than the Koreans
Looks like a Lexus NX. Nice
Is it me, but I've not seen any Ariyas around me, compared to the various Hyundai and Kia EVs and of course Teslas, and the very occasional bZ4x.
Nissan schould produce the Ariya in the US and an Infiniti Version of it .
Def should’ve been an Infiniti
Do BEVs depreciate more than ICE cars?
Typically. But too much variation to tell.
Has Nissan finally entered the 21st century?!
Good review Kirk. I agree, it’s a nice car but too expensive. I went to test drive the AWD and I was less impressed by the interior than you. It’s okay, but I don’t like haptic buttons and it didn’t have the Infinity quality feel to me. I wan’t able to test drive it as the 12V battery was dead and by the time they fixed it two weeks later, I decided I wasn’t interested enough due to price. I was also annoyed because the dealership knew the car wasn’t ready and I had made it clear I was only interested in AWD. It’s too expensive and too late.
I feel like they should have stepped it up and made it an Infiniti or stepped it down, this is too expensive for where it's landing.
lol the instant torque is bad for the tire. as a consumer brand you probably don't want your customers changing tires every few months.
It looks nice, but I think any EV that doesn't have a frunk is an indication of a bad design, on top of the other EV issues related to range, charge time, cost and weight. This is why I'm not into the EV market, at least yet. Let's see what the solid state batterries will do to EVs, maybe then some of the current problems will be solved.
The only reliable Nissan!
Patrol armada is a tank. New frontier, and 9at models should be very reliable
@@KirkKreifels consumer reports says otherwise for the redesigned Pathfinder and Frontier
@@chezzyperson3339My mom got a 2022 Pathfinder Platinum 3.5 V6
It's been pretty good
looks amazing, but some many little things annoyed me with this car when i test drove it, especially considering the price.
No Frunk, no one pedal driving and floaty suspension. still on my list but other competitors around this price point like the Ioniq 5 and EV6 seem to have the full package.
$2k for those wheels? god no.
They look like spare tires
I believe Nissan made a good BEV with the Leaf but not so much with the Ariya.
nah the ariya is beautiful
The high price is deal breaker
The leafs missing thermo management was its down fall
Are there any further improvements over Tesla? For example, can it be bought without the utterly idiotic and useless panoramic roof? Which would mean - price can be lower, insurance is lower (those stupid things cost like $3000 to replace when they break and YES, they DO break!), less weight ( range, performance), less heat in saloon (range, not having to run a/c more) and so on and on?
Japan? or France's? 😀
"Its a handsome vehicle" idrk about that
The blue color and terrible wheels kill this particular one. I like the design otherwise
@@KirkKreifels Thanks for the reply! I really like your videos. The first time I saw one on the road I was intrigued, but upon a closer look it doesn't really do much for me. Feel like the modern EV styles won't last the test of time.
Trying to take over for Brie Larson, sorry just not going to be the same. LOL. Finally, someone let you out of the house. EVs have unforeseen environmental issues that people have not yet realized. Also, the severe lack of recharging stations makes them only ideal for those wishing to stay close to home. Why take the risk of being stranded? It would be very unfortunate for the person who gets into an accident to have the battery pack shove up their seat squishing them or exploding and possibly catching on fire. The hazards of EVs.
Nissan and best don't belong in the same sentence.
Much better than the BZ4x or Solterra, which to my knowledge are the only other modern EVs from Japan. That’s impressive considering Toyota is much much bigger than Nissan!
I think Sakura is the best Japanese EV, but too bad kei cars aren't available for non Japan market. Ariya is the fruit from Nissan collaboration with Renault after ex CEO shenanigans, while Sakura is the success story from Nissan - Mitsubishi Kei EV. Price gap between the two is so huge
Edited: thank you for the like, Mr. Kirk. Hopefully we can drive Sakura or it's Mitsubishi twins soon
@@limitedreach4446more expensive than any other ev
@@salamov963 Kirk said it’s the best from JAPAN, which it is, so my comment stands. I’m not comparing it to the rest of the market!
@@limitedreach4446you are comparing with bz4x
It's a no for me. Electric and 60K no way!
Nice overview. Cars are so expensive today for what you get. It looks cheap and plastic like to me. It has the EV ugly look.
Love your legs.😃
in my opinion, Ariya is too expensive. Nissan doesn't have the reputation or reliability for that kind of price. Even the already over priced KIA EV6 is cheaper.
this car does NOT qualify for the $7.5K incentive as of now Aug 2023
Have one and do not recomennd for buying - shitty OS and other programming bugs, i am not even talking about trash nissan connect..
Well done, Renault.
Great video, but the gas wasting petrol head in me says BOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
Best EV is like winning the smartest person on short yellow bus. :/
Less than 240hp and 4700lbs and it should be quicker? Lol...
Despite the Recession crisis am cool, a profit making of £32,000 every month is assured , Sir Sheldon your God sent.
Nissan is in complete corporate chaos right now….Stay away!!!!!
Sad but true
Why? For stock investment yes, but why stay away from their current cars?
This car really sucks at everything it does. If this is "the best EV from Japan", then their outlook is rather bleak!
Range is second best to Tesla and interior is literally the best. What specific fuss do you have?!
You must not have driven one.
Range is very good, it's very quiet, ride is smooth enough, 22 AC charge, it does many things very well
