The Zodiac killer being a cop makes a lot of sense. Like the idea of him knowing how to not get caught, knowing the ins and outs of the department, and knowing how to mess with the police, it just makes a whole lot of sense. Even if it is a stretch.
I grew up where this went down and had to go along the road where the lake murders happened all the time. Grew up with my parents using the zodiac killer as the “don’t stay out past dark” excuse.
Strong disagree. People who use snapchat are incapable of becoming serial killers due to a vast lack of neurons in their brain. They'd be caught after their first homicide
The handwriting comparison of R.Hoffman poem and the “letter’s” is the best I’ve seen yet. And him being a cop makes perfect sense to me. Especially when it’s mentioned that “you could have caught me, if you’d have searched the park. Instead they were too busy trying to see who could make the most noise”. This eerily screams “I’m a cop”, but you guys were too busy focusing on rank and jurisdictions to see what was right in front of you!
There would be plenty of handwriting samples from Richard Hoffman's file and work records to compare with the zodiac's letters. Also, if he was calling in to his own place of work, plenty of people would have recognized his voice. Voices are very distinctive. And from the recording of the killer's call to the police station there appears not to have been an attempt to disguise his voice. Finally, Nebraska is a state, an entire state. What town did Richard Hoffman come from, and which did the victim come from? These kinds of details should be put on the table before rampant speculation about "how police talk".
BRUH. In that interview, when Richard closed his eyes to recall what everything looked like in the ambulance, he smiled. It's quick, BUT DUDE SMILED when he went back to seeing someone in that state. That reaction in that interview has me sold it was him. People typically shouldn't smile recalling something like that. I'd love to see a professional behavioral analyst review that footage. Friggn wow.
I once read a book (I don’t remember the title) but it said “the killer is always closer than you think. Trust no one.” That scared the shit out of me.
There's a really interesting doco on Netflix atm called 'This is the ZODIAC speaking.' and has a lot of proof about Arthur Leigh Allen and it has loads of new evidence pointing towards him being the Zodiac Killer. I watched it a couple days ago definitly reccomend for anyone interested in the case.
this docu was so good !!! learning about the kids that went to all murder locations with Arthur leigh allen thinking he was just such a gret guy when actualy he dtugged them and groomed them. I know there was no physical evidence to prove it was him but theres too much pointing to him.
Loved the documentary..i felt for Mr David (RIP 🙏) of how frustrated he was ..that he couldn't protect his younger siblings..and when he said that leigh told him..that he was the ZODIAC ..that was the most spine tingling moment
The real question is how many victims do we still not know about? Considering he said "there are a hell of a lot more"...Especially since he was a cop...that's the truly scary part.
I've always thought he was just making up the number of kills. Taking into account that he was bad at it (2 of 7 known victims survived), he moreso enjoyed bluffing and scaring people, as well as the attention it brought him vs. the actual act of killing, like if the murders were just a means to an end. With the 5 that did sadly pass, he "proved himself" and it was no longer necessary to continue killing to relish in the attention his bluffing gave him.
“I promise I’m not the zodiac killer.” This is exactly the type of thing I’d expect a zodiac killer to say. The police sketch looking like you was also hilarious. Reminds me of the newscaster who looked exactly like the sketch on the screen lol
The way she curls and styles her hair in other videos with bangs is really pretty too. Red is just such a nice color on her, with her eyes. Complementary.
This is one that really has me convinced. There was another guy in the 2010s that had a documentary done on Hulu because he believed whole heartedly his father was the zodiac. I didn’t totally buy his story because he picked and chose what evidence he wanted to apply, while ignoring other pieces. But THIS man really has me convinced he’s onto something
It makes sense. A lot of people said Zodiac was the only killer to never revisit his killing grounds..... well.... maybe he did, but he did it while working as a POLICE OFFICER.
I believe that The Zodiac Killer, suddenly stopped killing, because the police actually interviewed him as a suspect, but couldn’t arrest him because they didn’t have enough linking him to the crimes. If he kept killing, he could give them those links. Also, if he were a suspect, he was most likely being watched, or, yeah, if he were a police officer and had an inside view of the investigation and were starting to connect things that might lead to him, he might discontinue his killing.
Or if he was a police officer, he knew when to change his MO slightly. Honestly with the Zodiac, he was the one linking himself to the murders. Otherwise, it was just seemingly random shootings and stabbings of men and women mostly of younger age. His targets could've changed as he aged too because if it were more tied to his sexual pursuits, maybe as he got older, he targeted more older women. We don't really know if he ever stopped. We just know the Zodiac, MO stopped which was mainly the letters and the ciphers.
Serial killers typically don’t have the ability to simply stop, something external has to force them to stop. He more likely changed his MO and/or moved and the rest of his killings were never connected back.
He got promoted as a sergeant (if I remember correctly) when the killings stopped, it's in a video with Giga Gavin, that may explain how his narcissism got fulfilled.
I suspect it's also possible he realized he needed to change his MO and be "quieter" about the killings, cause they were on to him. It's honestly just so hard for me to believe he committed these murders so close together and they're his only murders.
I worked as a detective for a while. If he was a cop, that would be EXTREMELY helpful to ID them. We could go back and look at patrol logs, reports, use of force reports, vehicle mileage when filling up, which patrol vehicles were checked out and when, if he would change patrol zones for no reason more, and he would be fingerprinted to work. The only big problem there would be is that we'd have to go back maybe 10+ years before the first killing to see what he was doing, if he was employed, and if there had been changes to the way reports were written, if use of force went up or down, patrol logs, and if he changed how often he went outside of his zone without reason more or less often.
@KR0615 I wish. I've always found the whole case so interesting. Honestly I'd best surprised if they still have all his reports and lots on file though.
That answers some of what I wondered, but in 1968, '69, etc... how did they know if the report was honest? Could they track the car and where it went? Would somebody so f---ed up to be a killer, tell the truth about use of force? I probably just don't understand how it all works but it just seems none of that could be trusted from somebody out there killing people. He's lying almost throughout his whole life. I don't think the killings were ever done with a patrol car around. If he was off-duty, then I can see being at least a time when he cold have done the murders, but he could just make up some story about where he was. As a cop, he might even be dismissed more readily than others. It happens.
@nowhereman8656 typically in a use of force more than one cop shows up, and people see it. Obviously he can lie on reports, but even when lying on a report it has to make sense with what other officers write. As for tracking it, I'm not 100% sure. Now in patrol cars and our ambulances we have a device that tracks our location, speed, braking, turning, etc. We also use a fuel log. So we enter the vehicle number, vehicle mileage, and how much we put in, then get a receipt from the gas station to attach to it. Now it's all done at our county pumps where we still enter that info. What would get him is his radio. When you key up on the radio the radio kinda goes to the closest tower/repeater so the signal will "hit" that and transmit to other repeaters and towers. Technicians or whoever they are can look and see what radio number pinged at that tower.
I kinda don't get how serial killers like the zodiac killers are so well known. The candyman and the grim sleeper actually commited so much more psychopathic atrocitys in my opinion. And i had never heard about them. So im also really glad these videos are being made. I think they are told so well and they actually make you understand things fully.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that caught that! It almost looks like someone reliving the experience, like you hear about some serial killers do when they reflect on their trophies.
He's a strange guy for sure, and it all makes for an interesting read. It's unlikely he's Zodiac though. For one, Nancy Slover would've easily recognized his voice.
I only just noticed the updated intro card for this series, and I love that while it's different, she kept in the mixing up of the arms to cross them. I appreciate that little detail that still says Kris is going to try to keep it more lighthearted while covering such dire topics. Your humour makes it easier to digest these episodes. Cheers Kris, and here's to potential episodes in the future.
This looks solid to me. The "rh" poem signature, the "I think she said Richard something", the "untill" misspelling, the physical resemblance to the sketches, and the fact she was known to be dating a jealous, dangerous Valejo cop are all particularly compelling. EDIT: and the fact he was ON SCENE in an official capacity, and would go on to speak publicly about it, is classic serial killer shit.
@@Bizarrebarbie It is not 'concrete evidence', but compelling circumstantial evidence. The closest physical evidence is the handwriting similarity. A print match would have been nice, his should have been on file for exclusion purposes...
There's a segment on the Muppet Show where Rowlf the Dog and Sam the Eagle sing Tit Willow and as soon as that song got brought up my autism took over and all I could think about was the Muppets. All this to say Kermit the Frog was the zodiac killer the whole time.
The problem with the Zodiac is that he looked so generic that he was almost impossible to identify. Those sketches looked like 70% of Middle Aged dudes in the 60's/70's.
After watching This is Zodiac Speaking I am convinced it was Arthur Leigh Allen. There is a lack of evidence, but just like Scott Pederson there is a lot of circumstance. Allen’s step kids have put their side of the story together, including an apparent confession, and they believe it. David Toschi knew, but he could not prove it.
I find it interesting that the killer made sure the murders were consistent in having one male and one female. For the taxi one, instead of that he could've gone for another couple again to get more kills, but instead he balanced it out by killing one guy to "make up" for not killing the stabbed guy
It seems like he wants to keep his "scores" even. Sorta like how collectors like to have odd or even amount of whatever they collect.IDK tho, just me being dumb lol
Maybe it’s because he talked about them being slaves in the afterlife he thinks they can reproduce in some sorta way and then he would have more slaves.
Remember the Zodiac Killer when I was in Junior High School. My parents wanted me to be with a group of friends at all times which I already was. It was scary to have a man killing teens for no reason. My parents use to take us to Lake Berryessa all the time but, during that time we never went to the lake to go camping, fishing, swimming and boating. A lot of parents were worried and scared for their children and then the Zodiac Killer stated he was going to kill students on a school bus and parents were driving their kids to school for fear of their children. That caused traffic jams at schools.
Me and my friend tried solving this case a few years ago, we got pretty far but then we got lost and just gave up. This honestly makes a lot of sense that he was a cop.
I'm dead at the way Kris tells these stories. The "how tf do you f that up?" about dispatch telling police the wrong description and "bomb diagrams, wtf" had me cracking up cause it's so true!
I recently watched a documentary called the myth of the zodiac killer about a theory that there was more than one killer. It gave way more information and evidence was really worth the watch
It woukd make sense. Most serial killers are highly narcissistic. They would get off on being able to apear in a documentary on their own killings. Theyd love the attention.
My grandma who lived 15 minutes away from the Vallejo murders during that timeframe, said that she remembered police cruisers being commissioned to tail school busses as a precaution after the Zodiac killer made threats on school children.
Being taking a deep dive into your deep dives lately; I love watching true crime videos/shows, and yours are easy to fall into because your voice is so calming and not monotonous like like a lot of true crime media. Untill next time!
The fact the same words between Richard Hoffman and the Zodiac Killer are misspelled is kind of spooky. Like there’s a lot of people who can’t spell, but “until” is such a specific word to misspell
@@Rhowski i do too and it's my first language lol, when you have an older sister who thinks it's funny to "correct" your spelling to confuse you and get you in trouble you spend the rest of your days second guessing every one of those words she "helped" you with!
People with dysgraphia have trouble with spelling and find handwriting physically painful if we try to write cleanly. d,p,q and g often get used interchangeably without a lot of work. The weirdest part is the letter swapping only applies to handwriting not typing. I still handwrite doctor with a p and I’m forty. It’s the one I’ve never been able to correct it.
Yeah, every few years we go through this exact scenario. I'm pretty old and Ive heard this story several times now. "I know who the zodiac killer is!!! It's a deceased family member of mine!!"
I love how Kris explains these kinds of cases cause I’m always terrified after watching these, but I’m never scared after watching hers because she makes them funny and like not a psychotic way, but like really awesome way and she still honors the victims❤
idk why people think it’s gross, talking about these things is important as it is history. I also feel afraid after watching videos about these pieces of history, but she makes it easier to swallow and digest. There is nothing wrong with watching true crime, it is history.
If I were those responding officers and I got told that “Dispatch screwed up here’s the correct description” and then I remember I saw a guy who fit that description as I was looking for someone else, I would have been so F******* pissed.
i have a feeling richard messed up the description because he knew he was about to get cuaght but then again, if those two cops saw this guy in the car but let him go, wouldnt they have realized it was their coworker?
@@michaelfox2433 yeah..but the cops that stopped him briefly would have been like "oh hi its you," and would have let him go anyway. but as someone else mentioned, they probably didn't know their coworker
@@elham2393 First off, they weren't co workers as they worked for completely different departments, if it was him at all to begin with, and secondly there was no reason to stop him since he was obviously not who they were looking for according to the description they were given so, its all a moot point.
Guys I think Kris is the zodiac killer. The reddish-brown hair, the middle name, the glasses, and the dark clothes. Although this might be a reach considering she wasn’t alive when it happened. 😂
If you notice on the zodiacs misspelled words. The change almost always creates a word within a word. When it doesnt he still adds and extra letter or removes one which all seems very intentional.
Or if you are a police officer and see criminals misspell words constantly, then you try to imitate the same thing to throw the police off. I wonder if he misspelled anything on purpose that he did not misspell in any of the other letters.
@@xintoc he misspelled words to make his very simple cipher, harder to decode. It’s really that simple, and you can tell this from the fact that the misspelled words often appear more than once and not always misspelled. Obviously he might then also just misspell words, or make small errors in his coded message, that is very common when you arent used to making codes.
I scrolled down to see if anyone else noticed the decided non-random nature of the misspellings. I hadn't noticed the patterns you did (I'll have to go back and look at it now, dang it!), but I did notice something else. ZK seemed to misspell the wrong words. He got easy ones wrong and more complex ones right, which sounds like someone trying to mislead investigators as to his level of education, if nothing else. It was a foolish effort, really, as some of his sentences were almost as complex as mine, and his punctuation was correct.
@@Pawsk If it was Hoffman it's more than likely just bad spelling, as there wasn't any issues with the maths in the ciphers, the issues were with the spelling, which didnt have any bearing over how well the ciphers could be decoded If it had there would likely be parts that couldn't be decoded, but there weren't Dude just can't spell, but he's very good at maths, which really does lend itself well to the theory that it was Hoffman
I love how Kris throughout this whole video kept making "connections" between the killer and herself and then panickedly explained that it wasn't her LMAO. "he sort of... sort of looks like me... I SWEAR I am NOT the zodiac killer-"
Kris thinking she looks like the zodiac killer might be one of the funniest things I’ve seen😭. And damn that man looks so similar, and the misspellings and the fact that’s he was a cop… chills.
The misspellings should have been a huge clue. I get that sometimes we accidentally misspell things and then sometimes get it right. Like it used to be a coin toss for me with "definitely." But if you don't know a word's spelling then that's hard to fake. Like, try to trick him into writing "comidy" again (and others). If they just gave a list of words he'd probably be like "oh yeah I always second guess that word so maybe I spelled it wrong and the true spelling is the other way."
It could also explain why the police didn't "Find him in the park because they were too concerned with who could make more noise" and if he WAS spotted in the park, it wouldn't be unusual to see him there... I dont know, i like this one.
My question though is those 2 cops walked right past a man who they think may have actually been the zodiac (when they had been misinformed about what race they should be looking for). Surely they'd have recognised a fellow police officer. Also the whole police precinct surely would have recognised Richards voice when he called in? I like the theory but there are lots of unanswered questions. I'll be keeping an eye out for updates at least
@@hannahansley8654 To be fair, the 2 Officers that believed they might have passed the Zodiac, could just be a coincidence. They didn't learn till afterwards that the description they had was wrong and then they had to think back and recollect on what they saw that night and an extremely vague description of a white male isn't a lot to go off of, that could really be anyone and not necessarily the killer. So that's kind of a stretch to begin with. Also, it could just be a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, in that the guy that the Cops saw could have been the right guy that matches the description that was given by witnesses of who they saw in the area around that time but still doesn't mean that he's the Zodiac. And as for the other Cops not recognizing Richard's voice, could be for a few different reasons. One being that their minds simply wouldn't allow them to make that connection. It's not always easy for people to see the ugly truth, even when it's right in front of them and especially when it's someone that they personally know and are close to. People don't like to believe or admit to themselves when they've been fooled, especially by someone in their inner circle. So I imagine that these Officers couldn't even fathom that it could be one of their own doing these heinous acts and then taunting them with it. Denial and willful ignorance are powerful tricks of the mind. It's also possible that one, or more, of the Officers did pick up on the voice and suspected that it sounded like Richard but without any concrete proof, you don't just go around accusing your fellow Officers of being a serial killer. Another plausible reason could be that he altered his voice when he made those calls to purposely disguise his voice, just like someone can disguise their handwriting to avoid being identified. Also, it's not uncommon for people to sound dramatically different over the phone, especially when you consider the technology they were working with back in the late 60's and early 70's. So it's certainly possible that could be the reason no one picked up on it. Regardless, I definitely wouldn't write him off as a suspect due to those points as they are easily explainable and circumstantial at best. And simply judging by the evidence presented in this video, I'd say there's certainly more evidence potentially linking him to the case than not.
@@sashabenoit1518 I think you might have missed the point of the question. The two officers were walking the same street the suspect was traveling. They passed him without realizing they were looking for the wrong individual. However, if the suspect was a fellow officer, the two would be able to recall seeing him, specifically. Even if they did not think he was involved what so ever. They were in search mode, not crisis/disaster mode. I am not a fan of the, "He knew how to evade police so he clearly was one!" theory. It ignores the equally probable theory that the killer was related to, or good friends with, an officer.
Yeah the golden state killer was a cop so i wouldn't be suprised if the zodiac killer was a cop because it is easier to get away with crime if you are a cop.
I've loved this case my entire life, did a report on it in college, and am writing a book about it, but good lord there are so many "My grampappy was the Zodiac" every year. Kevin Fagan (the reporter in charge of the Zodiac case at the SF Chronicle) and Duffy Jennings (the one in charge before Kevin) get hundreds, even thousands of tips still today.
I was just gonna say, someone needs to insert the old Geico saying "everybody knows that", because I'm pretty sure I've heard reports of, "some kid said his grandfather was the zodiac killer" like a year ago😅.
Same, I was obsessed with the Zodiac Killer for years and wanted to learn everything I could about them. Huge propers for writing a report and eventually book on this.
True, but somebody’s grandpa had to be the zodiac so it’s possible! One way or another, that monster had/has family. I do think this one is worth investigating though.
He prob has a disorder. Hence why hes gettin overly emotional and his emotions are bursting out. Thats how it feels to get anything out (adhd here)... But noticing those similarities would be mind blowing.. i wouldnt expect him to be calm about it
This case interests me so much because there’s so much evidence against the killer being a myth but there’s also so much evidence towards the killer being real. Either way there’s so many mysteries and theories about it. It’s so fascinating to see all of them! :D
I’m so unhealthily obsessed with your hair like this!!! The color, the length, the style/layers! It’s actual perfection! Do you think you’d ever grow your hair out? Since I started watching you’ve always kept your hair shorter so I was curious 😊
Richard being the Zodiac killer makes sense to me. All the suspicious evidence aside, I honestly didn't think much of the 'flashlight thing' but when Kev mentioned it at the end it really begged some questions in my head. What kind of a citizen would use a flashlight to look into someone's car? The police officers do that like a reflex. Personally I found Richard's videos oddly eerie? In a sense that his speaking style and even his voice are weird. And the faint, quick smile he gave while he was talking on the footage? Who *smiles* when remembering a crime scene? I'd love too see some more things, it'd be crazy to finally crack this case.
Zodiac killer is one of the killers that actually has scared me. The way he takes credit for all his killings is insane and Untill we know for certain if it’s Richard we won’t get an awnser on anything. I’d rather be alive for an awnser on who he is
The young man on TikTok has the most compelling story I have heard so far. I say exhume his grand father's body and see if it is him. Do the fingerprints match and is he a DNA match. Too many things line up not to be looked into farther.
@@sonianugent6429 Richard Hoffman was a cop. One of the first things that is done when a cop or any other government employee is hired is to fingerprint him.
@sonianugent6429 I was thinking the same. Why is nobody doing this? Or working on getting it done? If they send the evidence to more sophisticated crime labs they could probably find things that weren't originally found. IF anything was preserved from the victims.
I remember somebody in a Reddit sub a few years ago who, I think, was also a retired cop, posting something about it probably having been another cop. Something about patrol routes and specific buses linking various sites together. I can't recall the details now, not even whether he had a name or not. I'll have to have a dig around and see if I can find it again.
I got chills when I watched the tiktoks. Particularly that interview with him going into detail about the bra 🤢 Even if Richard isn’t the zodiac killer, I have no doubt he was involved in some awful stuff. It’s a compelling case… I can’t wait untill we get more updates!
I was about to call you the Zodiac, but then she said the part at the end. I'm keeping my eye on you just in case we hear theories that connect you to him...😂😂
Did no one else find it weird in the interview when Richard mentioned his flashlight?? Also the way he spoke about the fluttering shirt creepily terribly poetic. On top of misspelling Until. Untill is just so specific.
Specific but not illogical. Pretty sure I've done that once or twice, because it's commonly shortened to "till" rather than "til" or "'til" So if you're someone who writes "till" as a shortened form, you could easily slip when trying to sound more formal...
I lived in Vallejo during the early to mid 80s. At that time he started harassing the sister of one of his victims. From that time to now I've followed the case closely. I and several others have long believed the zodiac was a cop. This explains how and why the vpd kept screwing up the investigation.
The original night stalker Joseph D'Angelo used to do the exact same thing. Plus, he also like to break into homes and use a flashlight to blind his victims so he can take control of them. he was also an ex-policeman and military.
noticed there's a wikipedia category "Category:Serial killers who worked in law enforcement" with 41 articles. also remember hearing few times some of these sickos being either interested in becoming cops or having tried but failed (Kemper at least, Bundy was in law school and worked with cops). and why not, power and control, easier to avoid getting caught, satisfaction of seeing people giving them so much attention, plausible excuse to lurking around watching people, convenient lies for using deadly force if someone catches you etc. fire departments also have more arsonists than the average population
jeez really hard to get a comment past the autofilter. trying to post just couple simple sentences about why these perps want to be cops without using any controversial terms, but after editing the comment four times I'm giving up. ofc it's well known YT doesn't care about comment sections, only thing they care about is keeping people on the site, well jokes on them I'm going to sleep
Him being a cop would also explain why he was overlooked on the street after the murder of the taxi driver. It was either dirty cops overlooking him or he was hiding in plain sight and blending in with the cops on the scene.
Naaa. The description of the killer was miscommunicated - they were looking for a black guy for at least a few minutes til they got it straight. In the meantime the cops are pretty sure they saw the real killer but dismissed him as being the perp. You can imagine the angst when they realized the mistake!
@@Pawsk I was thinking because he was recognized as a fellow cop, not because he was in uniform but because he was a familiar face. If it was this guy’s grandfather, the cops either knew it was one of their own or they didn’t suspect him being there because he was one of their own
@@mattskustomkreations a fair point but that does lead credence to him being the zodiac and someone inside knowing and covering it up. How else could his description get so egregiously mixed up? 🤔
@@jenamatic Zodiac was not wearing a police uniform when he killed Paul Steiner (taxicab driver), he was wearing street clothes. The communication error was made by the dispatcher - it was not the guys in the patrol cars' fault. Iirc, it was actually a kid who called it in, so maybe the kid goofed it up. I seriously doubt the cops in SF would have any idea who Vallejo cop Hoffman was it's 30 miles away. And how would they know ahead of time to expect him on the streets. No, they would have chased down and collared anyone who was reported to have killed a guy. In fact the cop(s) who saw Z and didn't know to catch him felt sick ever after that. Not only for the loss of life, but could you imagine the clout you would have for catching the Zodiac!!!
Important to note: The Mikado is an operetta by British composers Gilbert and Sullivan, written at the end of the 19th century. The poem mentioned is a song (aria) sung by the character Ko-Ko, near the end of the show. Ko-Ko, the character is the Lord High Executioner. If the The Mikado was truly the reference, another noteworthy thing would be that the Zodiac Killer was a fan of opera.
He probably was since he enjoyed writing poems. I suspect that people who like poems like me also tend to like operas since both are a weird way of expressing oneself.
Stereotypically speaking, aren't all serial killers a fan of opera/classical music and stuff? and/or literature? It just seems like most well known serial killers seem to admire Opera, Classical, Shakespeare & CO., and poetry...😅
My great grandmother was a bus driver during the time he was threatening to kill children in a school bus. She always did her best to keep the kids safe and she stressed so much about it. I used to audit a store on Lake Herman Road and I visit Lake Berryessa often. It’s just crazy being local to all of this and having family that were around at the time. Each generation in my family in the past 70 years lived through a serial killer being in the area they were living and it’s so crazy. I was in Davis at the time the serial killer was stabbing people at night (thankfully caught and his trial is starting next year), and it’s just so insanely stressful and I can only imagine the feeling of fear if the person was never caught.
Were you watching Dirty Harry ? as the killer in that was called zodiac, and he kidnapped a schoolbus full of children, and the bus driver was a woman (was this your grandmother) but don't worry Harry cut him in 2 with his 44 magnum..
What’s funny is that the “make out” spot of the first murder is not what you’d picture. I drive by every day, it’s just a pull off on a back road. No over look or anything cool at all.
Should I watch this? I grew up in Benicia. I know this area well before the changes to the roads and park. Plus back in the day driving out there was like driving a desolate area.
@@aftertheheadlines it’s still desolate. Except the church at the beginning and Syar quarry at the end there’s nothing but ranches down lake Herman. It’s a good video by Kris. As usual
I appreciate you giving the backstory. While pretty much everyone has heard of the Zodiac Killer, not everyone has heard the detailed story, including me.
Yeah, remember hearing Abt it at first and wanting to know more Abt who “the zodiac killer” was and information was really hard to find bc all vids Abt it just assumed you knew what he did and stuff it was so Annoying
Imagine being Darlene's husband and finding out she was cheating and died on the same night. It would be so conflicting knowing that the one you loved was cheating but also knowing she died.
Not only that, but they had a baby together. It makes one wonder if the little girl was really Dean's to begin with. DNA testing had not come along yet. Dean was cuckolded, to be sure, and Darlene was a 304, but she did not deserve to die.
also the fact that the foot-long knife used to stab Brian and Cecilia seemed to be, according to the police report, "homemade", could go well with Hoffmann being a keen woodworker in his spare time, as Foy stated. idk
@@johnscanlon2598 I'm not sure, but it might as well have a lot to do with it, depending on a woodworker's (or, in this specific case, Hoffmann's) level of expertise - it all boils down to the individual craftman's knowledge, rather than the profession he or she is carrying out, I'd say. If somebody describes me as a woodworker it may be the case that I also know how to handle metal, brick, blades etc. if I'm really passionate or simply curious about working with my hands (which Foy, apparently, implies his grandpa actually was). It could've been a knife with a wooden handle, in which case inserting a blade is not that far from a woodworker's experience. Maybe Hoffmann knew how to work a blade, given that many woodworking tools include blades and really sharp pieces of metal that need some refinement every now and then. idk, the cases may be infinite, just saying that we need not focus on idealtypes (woodworking/bladesmith) but rather on Hoffmann's case and his knowhow - which, in many cases, goes well beyond the mere woodworking scope of a craftman in general. don't take me too seriously tho hahaha just saying
@@johnscanlon2598 well a lot of people who do wood work also get into working with metal that honestly might not be the case here but he would be able to make a handle
@@johnscanlon2598lots of wood workers make knives. They either get the blades pre-made or learn to make them themselves. My brother's into woodworking and he even made a knife blade out of an old saw! If the zodiac's knife looked "homemade", it likely wasn't that well made. Someone into woodworking would already be fairly familiar with a lot of the techniques used in knife making, so most would probably manage to make at least a somewhat usable knife.
Adding to the possibility of the killer being a cop is the fact that such a wrong description of the suspect getting to the police in the area. He could easily have phoned in the description of a black man to pass on to the ones looking for the suspect in the area
Honestly Kris you should be a teacher or smth cuz what the hell I normally never ever stay watching videos that are more than 20 minutes but you got me sat here for an hour 😭
Kris is seriously one of the only people besides Celina, and Bailey, that I like to watch talk about these things because she's great at covering things in a serious way, but also we need that comedic relief so we don't all puke from stress 😅 perfect balance.
You should try to listen to Stephanie Soo then. Back then it was more casual though and less scary when she told the stories but now it's a bit more serious but still comfy
I live in this area, I lived in Vallejo for a few months, grew up a couple towns/cities away more toward Sacramento, but we STILL talk about this case. Its absolutely insane to think this happened here of all places. Until a few years ago, we had a very quiet, calm, peaceful community. This case came as quite a shock. And the photo of the Cecilia and Brian attack site, is LITERALLY the EXACT SPOT where me and all my friends used to go, hell, EVERYONE goes to that spot to swim, hang out on the shoreline, I forget what its called but EVERYONE parties there, brings their boats, you name it, THATS the spot we go. My first time tent camping (I'd gone cabin camping before, my Mom doesn't do sleeping in tents lol, too much dateline and sightings with Peter James lol.) Was at Lake Berryessa (where they were attacked) but not in the same spot. One night, we had a cougar set on our tent, he or she must have smelled my baby bunny I brought camping, and wanted in our tent. Luckily I recognized what was going on and grabbed a comforter, had my friends fiance put the lantern behind me to make me look massive, handed him my baby, (he had a pew pew for protection, you never know WHO you'll meet out there, AGAIN, growing up w this case, folks don't play around at the lake, if they're camping, they're armed with something), and I started growling, snarling, making any loud scary noise I could, and the cat took off. The next morning we found so many tracks circling our tent, she was there for a while before I noticed her. And all she had to do was use 1 claw to open our tent like an envelope. My high school best friends older brother and his best friends were in a HORRIFIC accident at the lake and everyone but her brother died. Its been 20 years and he's still haunted. Around here we say, "If they're going up they're probably sober, if they're coming down they're probably not. Be careful on the roads and STAY AWAY from the spillway aka The Glory Hole. Look up "Lake Berryessa Glory Hole" and you'll see what I mean. We also had this ancient barn we used to call, "The Zodiac Shack", and all the kids went to hang out there, we all truly believed it was used by him. I don't think ANY evidence of that has ever been found. It was for fruit and vegetable and hay processing. Me and a friend and her then husband used a ouija board in there, BAD IDEA. Genuinely terrifying what happened. We heard what sounded like a body being dragged across the hay loft above us lol, I've never moved so fast in my life lol.
Kris your hair and make up look PHENOMENAL also awesome job covering this!! I definitely think, like in the Golden State Killer case, it’s probably someone in law enforcement. The comfort with violence, the mocking of the police department, it makes so much sense to me

thank you thank you thank you for telling the back grounds of the victims. These kids were sooo lovely and angel type and they didn’t deserve what happened to them. So many people always ignore the people who lost their lives.
Yeah, David likely wasn't gonna get past first base, maybe a ground-rule double at most. Had they lived and continued dating, it would likely have been a prom night classic. The sexual revolution was fully underway at this point in time.
I really feel like if the zodiac killer got caught he wouldn’t say, “nah that wasn’t me.” Because he spent so much time toying with the police and making it a game. He liked the attention.
If he liked to toy with the police, then it would make more sense that he would deny being the killer as part of the game, wouldn't it? You don't toy with people by admitting guilt and ending the game, you toy with them by convincing them their correct accusations are wrong. He liked that his actions got attention, he didn't care if it was directed at his birth name especially if it meant he would lose his freedom. Getting away with murder and all the credit being given to one entity that he came up with, "The Zodiac," satisfied his need for attention, it made him feel powerful.
Here is a theory. What if he didn't actually commit some of those murders, but only took credit for it trought the newspaper? That would explain the different descriptions victims gave.
But there were physical evidence of him from each crime scene linking each crime to him , the evidence wasn’t just what he was saying in the news paper tho.

This eerily screams “I’m a cop”, but you guys were too busy focusing on rank and jurisdictions to see what was right in front of you!
damnnnnn yeah thats good
Not necessarily, serial killers/ arsonists often either stay on/near the scene or they go back to the scene of the crime

Yeah, he could be just exposed these few just to fuck with the cops

I've always thought he was just making up the number of kills. Taking into account that he was bad at it (2 of 7 known victims survived), he moreso enjoyed bluffing and scaring people, as well as the attention it brought him vs. the actual act of killing, like if the murders were just a means to an end. With the 5 that did sadly pass, he "proved himself" and it was no longer necessary to continue killing to relish in the attention his bluffing gave him.

It makes sense. A lot of people said Zodiac was the only killer to never revisit his killing grounds..... well.... maybe he did, but he did it while working as a POLICE OFFICER.
Split persona? Like the movie ‘split’ or ‘me myself and irene’
Don't the experts say they can't control themselves and eventually kill untill they make enough mistakes to be caught?
Get on it!
@KR0615 I wish. I've always found the whole case so interesting. Honestly I'd best surprised if they still have all his reports and lots on file though.
Maybe he did all that when off duty on his personal vehicle.
The way that the zodiac killer reported the killings, and then before hanging up just said "Im the one who did it." was just so chilling.
Kind of like how cops radio in crimes and reports and so he can also be on the scene sooner to be a first responder?
This really reminds me of the 2022 riddler

If you notice on the zodiacs misspelled words. The change almost always creates a word within a word. When it doesnt he still adds and extra letter or removes one which all seems very intentional.
Or if you are a police officer and see criminals misspell words constantly, then you try to imitate the same thing to throw the police off. I wonder if he misspelled anything on purpose
that he did not misspell in any of the other letters.

@@Pawsk If it was Hoffman it's more than likely just bad spelling, as there wasn't any issues with the maths in the ciphers, the issues were with the spelling, which didnt have any bearing over how well the ciphers could be decoded

@@hannahansley8654it’s because that police force is corrupted. Look up that police station it would not be the first time they over looked someone.
@sashabenoit1518 You need to start a blog or channel.
You eloquently cover things, and have well thought out sentences; get it babydoll!!! 💞
@@sashabenoit1518
I think you might have missed the point of the question.

Richard Hoffman was a cop. One of the first things that is done when a cop or any other government employee is hired is to fingerprint him.

I lived in Vallejo during the early to mid 80s. At that time he started harassing the sister of one of his victims. From that time to now I've followed the case closely. The original night stalker Joseph D'Angelo used to do the exact same thing. Plus, he also like to break into homes and use a flashlight to blind his victims so he can take control of them. he was also an ex-policeman and military.

Wait! Is this Richard Hoffman you are referring to? If so, it would make it very interesting indeed.
In this scenario do you think he was wearing a cop uniform? Or why do you think he just easily could blend in at the scene?

I suspect that people who like poems like me also tend to like operas since both are a weird way of expressing oneself.

Well light opera/musical comedy. Not high brow serious opera.
Were you watching Dirty Harry ? as the killer in that was called zodiac, and he kidnapped a schoolbus full of children, and the bus driver was a woman (was this your grandmother) but don't worry Harry cut him in 2 with his 44 magnum..

also the fact that the foot-long knife used to stab Brian and Cecilia seemed to be, according to the police report, "homemade", could go well with Hoffmann being a keen woodworker in his spare time, as Foy stated. idk
What’s woodworking have to do with a knivesmith

I really feel like if the zodiac killer got caught he wouldn’t say, “nah that wasn’t me.” Because he spent so much time toying with the police and making it a game. He liked the attention.
I think he would because he liked that he always got away so he’d wait til maybe he got away and the taunt them with the fact they could have had him
If he liked to toy with the police, then it would make more sense that he would deny being the killer as part of the game, wouldn't it? You don't toy with people by admitting guilt and ending the game, you toy with them by convincing them their correct accusations are wrong. He liked that his actions got attention, he didn't care if it was directed at his birth name especially if it meant he would lose his freedom. Getting away with murder and all the credit being given to one entity that he came up with, "The Zodiac," satisfied his need for attention, it made him feel powerful.
