I’m 57 years old. My doctor said I have to get more exercise, at my last checkup! I’m getting older, and my job is pretty sedentary now, so I really have to do something! When I was a kid I used to tap dance, and I remember liking it a lot. So I decided I’m not too old to start again! Your videos are great! I’m taking it slow, because, you know, I’m out of shape 😮. But I can see already that this is going to be fun! Thanks so much for taking the time to do these videos! I really appreciate it!
This was great! The one thing that I would have liked better would maybe be you could at the end instead of jumping right into doing it fast, you could start out slowly. I had so much fun doing this!
I started tap dance classes about 9 months ago, at the age of 52. I saw your video when I first started, it all seemed way too hard. The classes I do (for seniors) do performances for aged care homes etc, so I have been focused on those routines. But finally had time to focus on this, and have mastered the Shim Sham Shimmy. Now I have to teach others in my class 😅
Thank you so much! I have learned the Shim Sham 15 years ago but then moved away and couldn't continue those step dance classes, so it's really great to remember how it goes with your lovely video. 🌸
This is the best tutorial on the shim sham I have ever seen. Thank you so much. Would you please ( if you haven't already ((I've just discovered you)) all the different Train Steps. Thanks again you're terrific
Nice lesson. Thank you so much. When you show the dance at the very beginning...the very first step, you land with foot flat on the ground, later when you show the step you keep your heel raised. Which is more correct or perhaps it does not matter. This is the best lesson I have found so far and I am grateful. Great music and photography.
I'm glad you're paying attention to details. It doesn't matter if you step with a flat foot or on the ball. I keep my heel off the floor to make transitions smoother if I need the heel soon after I step down.
WOW!!!!! That was great. You are so amazing. Today it seems more videos are available that I didn't see yesterday. Thank you. I'd better get back to the basics for now ...
I like your teaching style and your tap view very important and great view. Also let me add the pace and sections are perfect I really enjoyed this very much. It reminded me of an sweet retired teacher that I had my first lessons with and we learned so much from her in a short span of time she was old school and very good. Your way is like hers so I subscribed.
This is so adorable! That syncopated break was hard for me to get. I have to practice it over and over! So much fun! I love the way you break down the combination! Thank you! 😊🎶
Your demonstrations are wonderful! What would really helpful too is if you could demonstrate the transition from one section to the next. I have trouble shifting to the tack Annie, and into the leap. My balance always seems to be in the wrong place and the count on the leap always 1 beat behind. Thank you for doing these demos!
This is a great lesson, many thanks. I've been working with it for days. Also, I'm wondering what you're doing with your ARMS through all this! Best wishes!
Dear Dance Prof, we love your lessons and weve lretty much got the Shim Sham Shimmy! Big THANKS! And what, we wonder is the jazz tune you chose at the end? Thanks again, John & Carole
Hi professor , I just started to teach my son the tap dancing .Your video is awesome, and easy to understand. Would pls pls pls put the music one more time with no word, BC I checked 100 sites to find only the music , so we can learn and memorize it. your choice of music is excellent. I can even pay for it. There is no where that I can down load this music.
Thanks Jina. I just went into iTunes and found the shim sham music there. Here’s the name of the album and link. I use the instrumental tracks without the tap dancing on it. Leonard Reed's Original "32 Bar Riff" Shim Sham Shimmy Music by Dean Mora's Modern Swingtet with Rusty Frank music.apple.com/us/album/leonard-reeds-original-32-bar-riff-shim-sham-shimmy-music/279079741
@@TheDanceProf Thank you professor . You are the best. Would you please let me know where do you teach. I mean which colleges or university. So far Your video is the best on line . Thank you again.
The first half is a nice tutorial but after push and cross, you should start from the top again and then do the same with the next step. It would make it a lot easier to get the whole routine in the body before learning the next step.
I learned this routine as a swing dancer! I'll put on my old tap shoes and do it. What fun! Oh and what floors are out there that can be used on wall to wall, under 75.00 ?
Excellent teaching video. One minor terminology correction: In the Traditional Shim Sham (1st part), the first move is called a "stomp," not a "stamp," because there is no transfer of weight.
Great Job, Amazing! I dance flamenco and will love to learn Tap Dance. I already registered for College Tap Dance Class. I am very exited about it. I do You suggest to me to begin to Dance Tap. My name is David. Thank You.
There are a couple moments in the movie where the steps are similar. The shim sham has been around a long time so it’s possible Gene Kelly was inspired to use some of those steps.
Thanks for asking. The one I demonstrate doesn’t start on 8. But there are many versions of the shim sham out there so you could’ve learned one that didn’t do a clap after the first section to start the push and cross on 8 instead of 1.
Yes, the freeze chorus is a part of the Shim Sham Shimmy as well. If you were to keep going and repeat the shim sham again, that is when the freeze chorus happens
I’ve watched a few Shim Sham videos and it seems everyone does it a little different. That’s ok with me. I’ll learn one, and when I feel comfortable with it, I’ll check out another, and another, and get a better understanding of the whole thing. Eventually, I’ll find my own way to do it! 😁
You can but it won’t be as good of an experience in the long run. I’d invest in a budget pair of tap shoes before going through the trouble to have a cobbler put taps on sneakers.
You are amazing. I am trying to find the shim sham music that you are using , but can find it. Would you please let me know how to get the exact same music that you are using . thanks
@@TheDanceProf I checked iTunes , there is not this music. there are some really boring one would please put a video not teaching just to see you dancing with this music pls pls plssssssssssssssssss
When you slow the last part down first to 0,5: okay okay I got this 0,75: hm this is still fine, couple more times Normal speed: 😰, you know what 0.75 is good Tutorial is great, some parts would be nice if it was more in depth(yes I did first practice with the basics)
I’m a beginner so this was the most frustrating video I’ve ever tapped to. I got all the moves when you were doing them slow but you didn’t do a run through of the entire thing slowly so I could practice. So now I’m screaming at my tv while trying to o keep up with tempo
I haven't tapped since the 7th grade. It always brought me such joy. Now at 50 years old...I bought myself some new shoes and Bam....like riding a bike! I can't wait to master the shim sham. Thank you for doing what you do & for sharing in a way that is doable for all!
You're going way too fast in these videos. The very first 5 basics steps video was great cause you broke it down step by step and did it slowly after explaining it but then in these videos you go way fast and doesn't give me a chance to grasp it first. You need to slow down and do it very slow first and go through each one very slow and then do it regular speed and then do it with music. But do it with slower music first, then do it with the music you chose in this video. All of it is way too fast. I got so frustrated.

I'm 73 and still love tapping although my feet aren't always as happy about it as I am. Loving tap!
Thanks, I have a midterm due tomorrow. I am taking a class at college at 70 years old. I am slow but will eventually get there.

Nothing choreographed for the arms. Just hold them naturally at your sides and do what you like.

Just a suggestion....could you show a slow motion segment of the complete tap dance routine just before the fast version?

I think we beginners are going by the SOUND of that tap.
Hi Linda - Does the first step land on a stomp or toe? He shows it both ways. I agree this is a great lesson...Thank you

This is great thank you! I have nowhere to practice and want to make a board like you are practicing on. What do you recommend for that?
I use plywood sheets from a hardware store.
I just shared it Shim Sham to my and my son's face book. I hope it is okay with you.
Yup! Thanks for sharing it
Do you have any beginner tap dance tutorials of newer current music?
Great video!
these videos are😂 very helpful !
I took the basic 5 Steps. Would i do these videos in a particular order?
Learning the basics is a good place to start to learn the shim sham so you've done things in the proper order
What is the music used please? I'll also.look again through the comments and credits for the citation. Best to All.
If I’m not mistaken, are elements of this used in Good Morning from Singin’ in the Rain? I’m trying to break it down for helping some actors learn it.
There are a couple moments in the movie where the steps are similar. The shim sham has been around a long time so it’s possible Gene Kelly was inspired to use some of those steps.
Toll!!😊
Would please give us some tips , how to speed up after we learned all the parts of Shim sham..
Practice, just like anything else
Hello, i just want to clarify the count. Isn't the push and cross starting at 8th count?
Thanks for asking. The one I demonstrate doesn’t start on 8. But there are many versions of the shim sham out there so you could’ve learned one that didn’t do a clap after the first section to start the push and cross on 8 instead of 1.
Very good! Thanks!

Excuse me profesor I heard somebody saying there is something called freeze chorus in this, would you mind telling me if you put another name on it?
Yes, the freeze chorus is a part of the Shim Sham Shimmy as well. If you were to keep going and repeat the shim sham again, that is when the freeze chorus happens
I’ve watched a few Shim Sham videos and it seems everyone does it a little different. That’s ok with me. I’ll learn one, and when I feel comfortable with it, I’ll check out another, and another, and get a better understanding of the whole thing. Eventually, I’ll find my own way to do it! 😁

Wher can I get this song?
I bought it from iTunes awhile back. It's still on Apple stores whether on itunes or Apple Music subscription. Could be on Spotify too.
Can I get sneakers with taps on them?
You can but it won’t be as good of an experience in the long run. I’d invest in a budget pair of tap shoes before going through the trouble to have a cobbler put taps on sneakers.
do you have a dvd for sale?
I don’t yet. I’ve thought about making an online course. What would you want it to contain if I made it?
What is this music
You are amazing. I am trying to find the shim sham music that you are using , but can find it. Would you please let me know how to get the exact same music that you are using . thanks

Out in clap is the very end
It's just step toe step hop step hop step step step before the end
When you slow the last part down first to 0,5: okay okay I got this

You're going way too fast in these videos. The very first 5 basics steps video was great cause you broke it down step by step and did it slowly after explaining it but then in these videos you go way fast and doesn't give me a chance to grasp it first. You need to slow down and do it very slow first and go through each one very slow and then do it regular speed and then do it with music. But do it with slower music first, then do it with the music you chose in this video. All of it is way too fast. I got so frustrated.
You need to show us the step at normal speed then teach it!,
