  • The Shim Sham Shimmy, Shim Sham or just 'Sham' was originally a tap dance routine though it had many iterations. It is credited to Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant. Review the original version from an expert, Peter Flahiff. Shakeedah!

    The Classics Vintage Workshops
The Classics Vintage Dance Workshops were a community dance event held in Seattle, WA, which drew together veteran local dance teachers and musicians to teach 10 classic swing, tap and lindy-hop choreographies seminal to the history and performance of jazz. The event was organized by Kelly Porter and Michael Faltesek with the generous support of the Savoy Swing Club.

Started tap dancing classes last week. I love old hollywood musicals and wanted to learn how to tap for a really long time. Started practicing at home too and this is the first thing that I learned. I'm so excited for this journey. Thank you for keeping this dance (and especially the vintage/traditional aspect of it) alive :)

Ha. Somebody told me today that they learned the tap Shim Sham from this very clip-- it was just a quick review for students so that there would be a clear version online to practice with. I hadn't been back to look at this page in years and I was astounded to see that it had so many views: a testament to Peter Flahiff's ability to break it down like a champ in under 5 minutes no less.

Kelly Porter Were you doing it at our point of view or were you doing it on the actual side so we have to kind of do it backwards

My instructor recommended this clip to learn shim sham
I just wish it was done with viewer watching it from behind so I can practice right along...
    TY for making the video!
Don't know why some folks make ignorant comments, like the post before me!
Most of us are very grateful for instructional videos!!

Well, the version done by Reed and Bryant was originally part of a comedy act in the late 1920's and was performed to "Turkey in the Straw," though I don't think many people would choose that tune now. It was often performed to "Tuxedo Junction" (orig. Erskine Hawkins). Nowadays it is also often performed to "T'aint What You Do (it's the Way That You Do it)." The video itself uses no music (rather counts), but the Shim Sham is choreographed for a 32-bar AABA jazz tune, so many songs would work.

unless you're in NYC - then it's performed to Lester Leaps In

What was the original music to this dance?

Meleah Allard, According to the man who helped create the routine in 1927, they used “Turkey In The Straw”. But it’s structured to work with any song in the 32-bar chorus format.

I COMPLETELY agree!! Had I known that this was going to get so many views, I would have done that!! It was just meant to be a quickie video review of the class I had just taught... Man. Hindsight (pun intended)...

+Peter Flahiff Hi Peter, I'm a beginner tap dance (59 y/o), and I find this instructional video totally inspiring. I agree, it would be easier from the back, so I stand side by side with the monitor parallel to my body. :) Please make MORE videos like this!!
