I'm super exited Woody! Looking forward on your take for all these synths. Also the stuff you describe from the other studio. Cheering for you, I've been watching your content for some years already
Looking forward to seeing the next newkeys clip 😅 awesome cool experiences ahead then, 🎵🥂✌ Thankful for the support you have gained Woody. Hope the weather will be good for sailing ⛵⚓🌱 Following,
MC-101 is amazing now, with the V.1.80 + firmware you will be astonished with the ability to create 4 partial Zencore patches from scratch.
Woody, first of all, allow me to congratulate you on expanding your YT horizons! I cannot tell you how many times you’ve made me feel better. Watching your videos is a treat, especially after a long hard day at work.
I own a Yamaha PSR-SX900 and while I am absolutely in love with it and have a great love for playing and music, I am really not worthy of such a superb instrument. I am simply not that good of a player. That being said, a good thing about dreams is that one can dream whatever he likes so I am absolutely thrilled you have a Korg PA5X in you shack!! I’ve no doubt its sonics are excellent and it likely presents a worthy contender to the Yamaha Genos 2. I am really quite fascinated with these instruments and it will be really interesting to see which one of these you prefer, especially in terms of ease of use and operability.
Also, I am equally excited, if not even more so, about the more attainable arranger keyboards like the Yamaha PSR-SX600. In my country, it is one third the price of an -SX900 and as such, I believe it to be a tremendous value!
All the best, as always,
Tunka
great feedback and thanks, glad you like the new direction!
@@WoodyPianoShack Oh, let me tell you, when you played those synth pads on the Korg Kross, you were not the only one with teary eyes, I assure you! 😊
Also, I sincerely hope you will continue to find time to interact with your viewers in comments. That means A LOT!
Take care!
Exciting videos to come, by the sounds of it!
Exciting news!Looking forward to seeing your videos! I used to have a Cobalt 5s. That would be pretty cool to show. Great programmable arp. I bought JDXI again after selling my first (it’s a keeper)! And I managed to snag an old Yamaha DJX for £80. Definitely keeping that too. Keep up the good work!
would jump on the chance to buy a djx, cool instrument. cobalt too, but don't see many of them. congrats on the 2nd xi!
I have Cobalt8x among my synthesizers. Its algorithms for spreading beautiful-sounding oscillators in a stereo panorama are outstanding. I don't know why the internet is silent on this subject.
Cool !!! Best!!!
The xd is great! The extra oscillators make it many synths in one
Just got it after much indecision. I love it.
The reface DX is $250 brand new here in the US, I already own one and I am thinking about getting a second one... I own a CS and YC which are amazing; but the DX is my favorite one. Thanks Woody for making great content!
Looking forward to all the videos coming about these grest synths! Just sold my SE-02 as I found it to not be very musical. Something about what they did the minimoog sound made it near impossible to fit into a mix. Bought a Behringer Poly D instead and haven't looked back! Phenomenal sound. Way better.
hmm! that is interesting indeed. i guess i will buy them both and keep my winner!
Go for it Woody! YOLO.
New JDXi.... this indeed a dream. Classic Roland drums, analog voice, two digital synths, 4 layers, super simple sequencer... all it needs is a new keyboard and new less poisonous color scheme.
And battery powered… 👍
@@zzrwood true!
Hey, Woody, I would love to see you drumming. You do have lots of talents 🤗
oh! never said i was a good drummer ;) it's just the most fun instrument perhaps! don't actually have a kit at the moment, but have an idea what to do about that...
Hello Woody. A man after my own heart. Great choices some of which I have already obtained. I would recommend the Access Virus Ti2, also anything in the Waldorf range of synths.
right on, always wanted a virus since the 90s!
And the nineties was when I invested in the Korg Wavestation closely followed by an Akai AX60. Unfortunately I lost all of my equipment in the 2019/20 bushfires in Victoria Australia, HAPPILY I was well insured and have over replaced my losses. I love your channel, keep up the good work. The kindest of regards from an aging synth freak Mick.
Great wishlist and somewhere in the horizon they are all obtainable. I guess you have seen the used microkorgs for sale here in Sweden? There’s a couple of them on different sites right now.
hi, yes and thanks, they do come up on blocket quite often.
@@WoodyPianoShack There’s an Opsix on Vend ;)
It’s really great that you enjoy your new hardware synths! I’m just wondering that earlier you were advocating for the software synths, even selling your Wavestation if I remember well. What made you change your mind? And don’t you regret selling a classic like the Wavestation?
hi, thx for question, don't regret selling unreliable and hard to maintain vintage synths at all, they are easily replicated in software. yeah, software much more convenient, cheaper and takes less space, but i need topics for videos. in 6 months all this gear will probably be gone.
Have you ever used Roland Intégra I7?
I know it’s oldish, but it’s still highly regarded.
Last year I bought a Korg Nautilus to complement my ModX and Fantom-0 .. but it was just gluttony, and really needless in that setup, so I half-heartedly put it up for sale in attempt at downsizing. Welp, downsizing failed as I ended up trading it for an immaculate mint Korg Triton Extreme, and a behringer Deepmind 12D. No regrets, both are full of character and nuance.. but definitely can't be classed as downsizing 😅 Looking forward to the video, Woody 😊
well pretty nice trade there, yeah there was a lot of overlap in the first setup!
So did you decide against getting a 2600? I know Behringer can be controversial but the 2600 and Pro-800 both sound amazing and I'm trying to decide on one of them.
not at all given up on that idea, hunting! i will get the korg or behr 2600 whichever i find first.
@@WoodyPianoShack oh nice! Definitely interested in how you'll use it, will probably be a lot more musical than some other channels that do a lot of beep boop sort of music (which I also enjoy).
Hi Woody,
Nice haircut!
Interesting tests ahead - looking forward to your videos.
Perhaps you could consider a test of the Roland Jupiter-xm.
Kind regards from Munich,

hi thomas, check my older videos i've already featured the xm, great little synth
@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks Woody! Will do that.
I vote you keep the bass minilogue.
08:32 LOL In his video, Espen Kraft was talking in such a serious manner, I believed his story quite a while, thinking maybe high up in Norway they might do such things.
When I finally realized he just wanted to express that to his ears a digital emulation sounds lifeless, I had to laugh quite hard.
i never realized it was a joke... it wasn't april 1st. i hope it was just a joke for the sanity of his family.

Excellent videos on your channel!
It’s a pity we’re not neighbors because then you could lend my Yamaha Reface CS, Roland SE-02 and System 1, Behringer Deepmind 12d and MS-1, Hydrasynth Desktop. Not all at the same time though 😜
Why not a Behringer Model D? Excellent little synth (I have one)! Can be found 2nd hand for about 2000 SEK I think… I can really recommend the Microbrute. Very simple but I use mine a lot. It really stands out in a mix. Much more than my Minibrute 2.
that is a shame indeed! thanks for the recommendations, i will add to the list! yeah, seen a few model d up for sale, but have been hesitant. bit worried about quality, but i should give a chance.
Hope you get your hands on the new Roland GO:KEYS 3 or 5. I wonder what will be your opinion about this keyboard.
yes i am very curious about this too! hope i can get one in.
Are you going to get all the music instruments in the world? LOL! Nice that you are able to get them cheap(er) second hand, and re sell them after they served their purpose. So i guess you prefer demonstrating those music instruments instead of more full song uploads. That's geat for everyone in the market for one of those fun toys. Looks like you always have a instrument to share on the channel. Keeop up the good work.
thanks for the comment! yeah, i'll grab whatever i can find, 3 new synths came in today actually!
I’m shocked you don’t mention Sequential, Oberheim, Nord, or even the SE versions from Korg.
The Monologue is a great little keyboard, however, the envelopes are far too limited (you’ll know when you try making sounds on it), and there are other drawbacks, such as the rotary encoder for menu interactions, which catches dust and starts malfunctioning way too easy. I sold mine because of these things in the end.
Hiya. Enjoying the channel and your enthusiasm. Not wishing to add to your list but other great resalable synths might include ... Vermona PerFOURmer mk2, Modal Electronics Cobalt and/or Argon, Korg Micro x, Nord Lead Rack (v1) + many other under the radar 90s rack synths (Korg 03R/w for example) .
thanks for the list, i did spend some months exploring vintage racks several years ago, there might be something there you like.
@@WoodyPianoShack Thank you will have a look. I binged on Korg and Yamaha racks when they were going extra cheap. Found them great but hard to program. My original Nord Lead rack is a forever rack synth however.
If you find a Fantom to borrow, get one with the EX expansion, since it includes a lot of goodies!
yeah, good shout
Please add Kurzweil and Dexibell to your range of synths. These are very great sounding synths and I never hear you about them.
neither of them are very common up here
I used to own Korg Monologue but i sold it, did not like the filter and limitations in envelope sections started showing very quickly. It’s an great and fun synth for the money but imho it’s better to spend little more for something more flexible. As for minilogues I would recommend going straight to miniligue xd. I replaced my monologue with the xd. The OG minilogue has also some issues that were too much for me like clicking envelopes. But the xd is awesome considering all the effects and user oscillators you can load to it, it will take you long time until you get bored with it.
thanks for the advice and recommendations. will test them all regardless, mainly for video content!
Thanks bud, you are doing a great service for us mere mortals to demo all these synths and keyboards that we can’t afford so that we can at least see how they work and sound, I bought a Yamaha PSR-E473 for $300 and I am amazed, this thing has MIDI data and audio! It comes with something called called groove creator which in itself is a bit of a gimmick but you can use the backing tracks on this to lay down some wicked compositions of your own in your DAW, try it and you will be pleasantly surprised what this keyboard does for 300 bucks
that is actually a model i have had my eye on, glad to hear you're enjoying it
In case used is an option maybe have a look at a KingKorg (5 octave version). I really love mine and is a great addition to my Roland Jupiter 50.
That Korg PA5X is a serious keyboard and in terms of sound at par with modern synthesizers, though no idea about sound editing options.
sound editing quite limited, but better than most arrangers i think it is fair to say. you get 1000s of presets to make up for it i suppose. ok, will watch out for KK
Since you have the MODX you're more than halfway into figuring out Montage M. I have the original Montage and from everything I've seen, the M is more of the same (plus of course new stuff like AN-X) but the interface makes a lot more sense now. So I would suggest you take up this offer :D
that's an advantage and also the concern, in all these years i still haven't figured out relatively basic stuff in the modx! what chance with the montage...? ;)
@@WoodyPianoShack I can relate, I have the Montage for 2 years now and I still have not used a lot of stuff. Mostly because I haven't felt the need or its just too much for my use. It's a massive instrument after all. However the M is much more discoverable.
The new engine in the Montage M (AN-X) is subtractive style virtual analogue anyway, so it shouldn't be hard to learn compared to the 8-op FM engine in both
@@Wagoo Esp along with the extra controls and the second screen, should be a child's play.
When my own granny died, not the poor one, the other, I bought a lot of pieces of gear for my studio, some firearms and 250 bottles of various wines for my cellar.
As an homage to her.
She never drank and recognized our national anthem by the lyrics only . I'm not sure she was interested by firearms as well.
Obviously, humour. 😁
I’ve been thinking of getting a Korg 88 key Oasys.
As a Korg fanboy the Oasys is one of greats of all workstations but remember they are getting old and use 2.5" PATA hard drives. It may be difficult to find a replacement when it crashes. The current workstation, the Nautilus uses mini-SATA flash drives which are not mechanical
Are you saying it’s going to crash eventually.
@@raul0caAre they prone to crash eventually?
@@deanragland3057 According to data storage people 50% of drives have failed by 6 years of use. Considering the Oasys was a top-tier workstation it would have been used heavily in a studio until it was replaced by another workstation
I'd say do the Montage M, but later on, in a few months or so, when you have the time to dedicate to the Montage M.
Personally, I really love the Behringer MS-1, and I can't wait for the MS-5 to be available here in the US.
Fantastic news Woody... some amazing things to look forward to. Methinks you're going to get quite tight on space with all that hardware collecting 😉
Re Roland's JU-06a (using ACB modelling), not sure whether you noticed on the ProSynth Network stream yesterday but according to Wagoo the (BCM) chip Roland uses is a (now rather old) 4 core SOC design - so one voice per core. I would think this means it's basically not possible to get 6 voice polyphony using these single chips (which hits the price point Roland needs). The System 8 has two chips - to give 8 voice polyphony. What a missed opportunity from Roland to not design in 6 voice polyphony per chip from the start... ☹
it is bizarre that roland would re-release their most iconic synth with 4 voices instead of 6 that the juno offered. frankly, i find it quite insulting to fans of the original. why bother emulating everything else so accurately if you can't even play it in the same way? i'm fuming. interesting to read about the hardware, thanks. yes, then they should just put 2 chips inside and offer 8 :)
Yeah... the answer to that is the System 8... so definitely worth considering one of those.
I have one and it sounds great to me, and people in the know (for instance Jamie GEOSynths who has an original JX-3P can't tell the difference in a side-by-side comparison).
somebody got a trim
yeah, fair point.
Why not pick up a Model D? Closest thing you'll find to a real Minimoog and you can get them for peanuts used, so no money to 'He who shall not be Named'!
yeah, have seen a couple for sale, just not convinced how close it is to MM, or the quality. guess i'll have to get one to find out.
@@WoodyPianoShack It's generally regarded the closest repro, even by Uli haters, moreso than the SE-02, that doesn't actually claim to be a MM clone,
but can get very close (just looking at the interface gives away its intentions). Anyhoo, they are going for twice the price of the Boog used, so something to think about :)
The build quality of the Boog is extremely good, btw, I own one.
@@WoodyPianoShack Miniboog is very close to the Minimoog. If you need convincing I'd recommend watching Starsky Carr's comparison with the 2016 Minimoog reissue @ pYxc8R_Qys0 and synthpro's comparison with a vintage Minimoog @ 3pRiUSf_QFw
"Velcome to Bad Gear! The show about the vurrrrrld's........"
you read my mind.... :D
😆 To be fair there's a good selection of wants there.
OPSix (SE) is one of mine in particular - ever since I saw how easy it was to really dig into messing around with non-standard FM (saws/squares etc.,) and also hearing the RVR Mod Crunch patch, its been on my list for a little while. SH-4d is a good shout too. I wonder how easy it could be to integrate into a workflow with the Nautilus.
One thing I would love for Yamaha to produce is modern version of their QY range - I'm still using my QY70 linked to the Nautilis! Previously it was my standalone synth/seq machine, plugged into a cheap Chinese 88-key midi controller. Despite its limitations, its still a very effective portable, scratchpad I can take with me on the train and quickly switch on to come up with a few new tunes on the go. A modern version would certainly be top of my list.
If you are looking for the Mini Moog sound why not buy a used Behringer Model D rather than the way more expensive SE-02?
lot of people saying that, i will do so.
@@WoodyPianoShack I have both SE-02 (plus Studio Electronics EXT-BOX) and the Boog D. The Boog is a more accurate Minimoog. The SE-02 is definitely inspired by the Minimoog and a good sounding synth in its own right (knobs are really diddy though).. but if you want to be as close to an original..
There is something fundamental you need to understand about Roland's emulations before you start just equating 4 note polyphony to being "rubbish". The ones with 4 note polyphony actually have the most accurate emulation of the original synthesizers.. it's just Roland's main chip they use for the last 2 generations is a quad core chip.. and they were too cheap to put 2 chips into those boutiques (well, it would have increased the price of them anyway for sure)
The boutiques with 4 note polyphony use Roland's ACB (analogue circuit behaviour) which is a circuit based emulation that generally sounds very close to the original synthesizer. Yes, it's annoying there are only 4 notes of polyphony, but the same ACB plugouts are available in the larger System-8 (with 8 note polyphony).. which uses 3 of these chips. 2 to handle polyphony and 1 for FX. Simulating the original circuits is quite a heavy task, so you can only really get 1 voice per core of the processor
Roland's other system that came later is ABM (analogue behaviour modeling) which is really just a cheap parameter restriction and macro scaling template whacked onto the top of their most recent VA engine Zen Core. This is the engine in the Jupiter-X, Juno-X and boutiques like the dead grandmother JX-08
The fact a picture of a JX8P is still printed on the box of the JX-08 is a travesty and they should all be burned on a big bonfire, because it's nothing like a JX8P. Similarly the Jupiter-X and Juno-X should never have been released without Roland's best emulation of the Jupiter and Juno respectively.. but they cheaped out and only used a single chip in these big synths too! The fact they go to the bother of making a big case very similar to the Jupiter-8 and then DON'T include their best Jupiter-8 engine is ridiculous
Zen Core in of itself is not a bad sounding engine, but this kind of behaviour is putting a sheep in wolfskin. It would have been far better if instead of the Jupiter-X they released a big synth with loads of controls on it suited to Zen Core. The Jupiter-X/Juno-X panels are suited to the Jupiter/Juno ABM templates, but are menu diving hell for anything deeper in Zen Core
So just a tip: more polyphony does NOT mean better. If I'm buying a synth that looks like one of their old vintage synths.. I want accuracy to the original to be as good as possible
I expect at some point Roland will bring out a new processor with more cores onboard, and we'll see them start to reintroduce ACB everywhere again. The full Fantom actually has 4 of these chips in and in their recent update they added in the ACB based models to the firmware
thanks for the technical insight, much appreciated. i stand by my statement, what on earth is point in doing an accurate emulation if they can't even get the poly count correct. 6 note poly is a huge part of the sound, technique and the way the instrument is played. to re-issue with crippled poly is an insult to fans of the original.
I agree with you - Roland should have used 2 chips - but I think an accurate emulation is more important than a higher voice count. I hate the JX-08 as it's pretending to be faithful to the sound like the other boutiques.. but is nothing like the JX-8P so what's the point
You can work around the issue by setting up a polychain.. although don't rely on Roland's polychain implementation as that's broken and they've never fixed it :D (it's spillover-only.. ie you need to press 5 keys down at once to get the second synth activated.. doh!) - so I just rely on the System-8 instead
Gear is double the price in New Zealand, a JDxi is $999. S1 is $400. I have to buy second hand yet it’s still expensive for old tech. Korg monologue at $450 is the cheapest entry level synth on the market. SH4d is $1200 with Elektron, Akai MPC and MC707 over $1600 NZ. MC101 at $900 is just too expensive in my view. 10 years behind yet a day ahead.😊
ouch, bummer. buy used way to go then if possible
Actually, I don’t know why people get so offended about Behringer.
What’s disturbing to me is that people get so offended about clinging and I have to be honest what about all the software companies that are cloning all of these vintage synths? Could somebody explain that to me and why aren’t people getting offended by that?
I get it Ollie has done some stupid and nasty things but a lot of other companies have two Beringer makes inexpensive synthesizers and they work really well. Those of us who can’t afford to buy vintage Synths which in fact after you buy one they usually break down and you have to fix them , which cost money and you gotta find the right people to fix them and do a good job on them.
who wants the headache so I wish people like yourself who I highly respect I would stop apologizing every time you mention the company Behringer.

Arturia also have a big announcement next week, might be Freak related.
thanks for the heads-up, yes saw something about that on the forums!

it's funny that the arranger keyboard in the background can probably do everything that all these synths combined can do!
@WoodyPianoShack Except it doesn't have that signature Roland sound which lots of people love and value so much
Why would anyone get annoyed about Behringer?
Are you new to the synth internet? 🤣
@@birdie17uk Not new to the internet. Not new to synths and I'm not really new to Behringer but I didn't know they did synths. Now I've answered your question, how about answering mine.
@@jimsuber6784 Loooooooong story. The synth community has for years been a war zone over Behringer - their ethics in cloning synths, particularly ones that are still in production, their thin skins over criticicism that have lead to elaborate personal attacks on journalists and 'synthluencers', their price points that supposedly 'put Moog out of business' according to one delusional but high profile synth youtuber. Many synth RUclipsrs - Bobeats, Jorb, Loopop (lied about by Uli & co ) - refuse to review or talk about their products. Others, have been attacked by Uli haters for featuring their gear. Basically, when one or two synthesists are gathered together and the big 'B' is mentioned a flame war is likeley to follow.
Woody! You ok? Just noticing some changes to your face and speaking pace.
umm, i'm fine thanks for your concern!
With $4000 to buy music gear, I'd personally opt for quality over quantity at present, for my playing interests. First choice would be a Vintage Vibe rhodes keyboard (probably get more out of it than from 20 cheap sound modules or mini-synths.) My second choice would be a couple of top quality sound modules such as the Roland Integra 7. Roland makes great products.
some great suggestions and I totally agree. but i need quantity for variety of video topics, nobody would watch 20 videos about the VV ;)
I would rather have a Pa5x or (used) Genos than $4,000 worth of assorted low-end bleep boxes.
yes, that is the dilemma i am pondering myself.
A lot of us just buy the bleep boxes and are happy with them. Recently got a Polyend Tracker and it has a surprisingly good synth engine to go with the sampling. Now that they're being replaced by the Mini you can get them for under US$400 in Europe
Exactly how I've ended up. After many years I've had all the top keys, Nord, Korg Kronos, Montage, but after many years I've realised all I need is a decent workstation and a nice digital piano with weighted keys. I always reach for in-the-box plugins these days, even with my Behringer Poly D which is a lot of fun it's just easier to load up a plugin and it's reproducible. So I've ended up with the Genos (original model) which I have had for years now since new and it's still my favourite go-to board for sounds and idea arranging. I also an integra 7 module which is just for sounds I need (to do covers) that I can't find on the Genos. Everything else comes from Komplete and Arturia in the box. Oh and probably my favourite purchase recently, a Roland FPX-60 digital piano which I love playing! 😊 On the other hand I don't have a channel like yours Woody where I need to keep producing fresh content, so I get what you are doing. Look forward to seeing how you connect all this stuff up, I see a rather big mixer joining the list at some point!
Ironic that these "low-end bleep boxes" often have far more powerful synthesis capabilities than the jumped-up home keyboards like the Genos or PA5X with their restricted sonic playgrounds for toddlers

You are buying too much too fast. How will you ever find time to digest any of this gear when you are consuming so much gear at one time?
yeah you have a point, but lot of this stuff will sit on a shelf for months until i get around to trying it. but that's not a problem, i'm just buying whenever I get a good deal. notice i'm only picking up compact stuff that don't take much space.
Sometimes you have to buy when things are available, and then you have the rest of your life to figure them out. I very rarely buy new, but before the ones i really want are discontinued because then they tend to get expensive. On that note I have the drumlogue and it is hard to recommend unless you are really into drum machines, I vote you keep the monologue bass. Yamaha reface cs I would recommend but it does have some digital aliasing that does show up, so if you can find used generally worthwhile. The DX reface honestly doesnt seem worth it with patch loading issues vs the cheaper behringer one. The system 1 I found troublesome with the plugout stuff as they switched to subscription cloud stuff for the plugins, the one thing I found uniquely useful about it is the scatter function, but I also have the mx-1 mixer that has the same thing and is probably my favorite performace mixer. I got the mv-1 as zencore machine and its one of the rare machines I absolutely am befuddled by, i don't know who I would ever recommend to. For 303 clones I absolutely LOVE my donner b1, to me it would be perfection if it had a battery compartment. I think people are sleeping on the donner brand a little bit. Hopefully you find an old kurzweil synth on the used market, those have some great sound capabilities! Oh the yamaha drum pad thing, absolutely would not recommend unless you get it for less than a pocket operator.
You can buy permanent licenses you dont need a subscription i wish people would go figure that out... @DjDoggDad
That's relative to skill level. There's not really anything on the market I can't be damn near close to an expert at within a week. But I also have a ton of experience and build/design synthesizers and DSP.
Sound design on the other hand, as well as musical composition is lifelong 😂 and a much different story.
As an ex Gaia owner, I can safely say don’t bother. It’s a nice learning keyboard, with a nice simple workflow, but the sounds and the filter are really horrible.
ah, ok, good to know! still ,it would make for an interesting video, that's the only reason i'm buying all this stuff
Only buy what you actually use, has the most features for the buck and learn all its possibilities before thinking on buying more gear.
Most of the gear you got has a lot of overlap
remember my usage is different to yours, i need lots of gear not to make music, but to make videos! overlap is PERFECT because then I can make comparison videos which many viewers love. :)
Чо ща будет?
