I didn't know anyone used a kayak to fish for the big ones. This is very inspiring to me since I love fishing and have thought about going out on the big lakes here fishing in a kayak and wondered if I would be an oddball. But after seeing this I am highly inspired!
Do it!
Youd be suprised
Sometimes you're not targeting BIG fish... It just happens!
@Amarinthstargazer People there are two marlin in this video, a Large Blue marlin that was 250-300 pounds by Howard in the Yellow kayak and a second Striped Marlin that was around 150 pounds by Matt in the orange kayak.
And you really paddled all the way home (11 miles?!)? Wow! Impressive! "Hello, Coast Guard, can you pick up me and my buddies??" LOL
That fish weighs no where near 300 lbs!
Buck and change maybe
@VIDEOZAL These kayaks were all 13 feet long (Ocean Kayak Trident 13). 13 feet is a common length, but they commonly range from 11 to 15 feet.
@Coolx305 THANK YOU! fish are made to be dense not like humans were loose from the pressure.
@MrLyricalBones
the drag on your reel allows you to catch much bigger fish than your pound test. Its called ultralight fishing. You can set a new world record by catching a big fish on a specific pound test line. For instance if the state record bass is 14 pounds. You could still catch an 8 pounder on 2 lb test for a different world record.
the reason he was able to keep it at a "stones throw" was because he is in a kayak, the fish isnt going to rip drag out when he can just as easily tow you around. The reason he kept him so close is also the reason the fish towed him 11 miles
@Anchorman727272 This video features 2 anglers fighting 2 separate fish. Matt (in the yellow kayak) fought and landed the 125lb striped marlin. Howard (in the orange kayak) hooked up with the 300lb blue marlin. After towing him 11 miles, the fish broke the line.
@lukeispro123 There were 2 marlin in this video... a 125 striped marlin (which Matt Moyer in the yellow boat fought and landed), and a 300 pound blue marlin, which Howard McKim (orange boat) fought, but did not land. After leadering the fish, it broke off.
Having caught a 150 pound striped marlin last year I can tell you that fish is nowhere near 300 pounds. The first one might be 200 and the 2nd is approximately 100-120 lbs, maybe a bit more. Still cool.
Hey, it's the story that counts. lol
Agreed with Tim Mahoney. My first thought was neither of these fish were 300 pound blue marlin. The second fish that was landed was probably 120 pounds. Nonetheless, great video and kudos for releasing the fish.
@coolguy19991 if you read the title and listened.. he got towed 11 miles out into deeper waters by the fish
Fishing is a fun activity and a great thing to pass on to others and future generations. It really makes you appreciate nature and want to conserve our natural resources. It's too bad many haven't experienced it and see it as a negative thing. Not everyone is as fortunate as me to be brought up on the water.
Incredible! Great land and it's incredible to see you catch and release such a great fish.
Hey Pinocchio The only thing that was 300 lbs. was the other guy in the Orange Kayak. If that fish was 300 then the remora was 50 ...... the Marlin was 80-120 at most and I hooked released and used a tape to know.
you guys are lucky...i think who get to have moments like this is the king of the world there is no such a thing as better then fishing most amazing this created on earth is fishing!!
wish i were there!
Capturing that kayak fish is top! strong hug my friend!
Hello. Nice Catch!!! As a Mexican and fishing enthusiast I really appreciate the catch and release. You are welcome back for great fishing experiences anytime.
@Kayak4Fish Yes. I realised this, but I don't think casey10614 does. I was simply pointing out to him/her that you can clearly see how big the 300 lbs Marlin is compared to the kayak and the fisherman. Thank you for adding in the remaining clarification that there were two Marlin. ^^
@Janusha they did not kill the fish, they released it afterwards, watch at 3:46.
It's like he's walking his little pet. Although a regular leash doesn't go through the pet's cheek.
@KayakFishingTales I'm not even a fisher person, but thanks for sharing the story, it was exciting to watch.
What a fantastic adventure!!!!
I can say that I am more then a little envious of that trip!
Hopefully, I will get there in the not to distant future. Awesome!!!
when I was young, all we used was a small boat, the sail, strong line, my hands and back....wait..that was Old Man and the Sea. :P
just google it: fish farms in chili...they have steelheads stuffed in nets..they feed them tons of anchovies...like 1000 pounds of anchovies for 100 pounds of anchovies...that my friend would be living in a storage facilty and on top of that this method is destroying the food chain in that area of the ocean.
Crazy. Marlin fishing on a kayak. All I can think of it’s sharks being that far out on the water 😂
I totally agree with maddcatone, so unbelievably cool that you let it go. Fish are meant to swim; we should be grateful, like you were, to catch it, hold it and cherish the moment for a little bit, then set it free....awesome story man.
great vid, story, and above all a lot of respect. Most people I know would have taken that thing home for dinner and pride, but you get your pictures and let it go... Way cool.
here in jamaica for the IGFA marlin tournament i've seen a couple 300lb over the years, and the second fish caught looks like at most 210.... but props to yall for pull them in on 20 lb test line in a kayak!!! sound like fun
awesome! well done, great fishing to land that marlin. you guys really looked after the fish when you landed it and it kicked off strongly. massive respect from the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique!
@marketgooroo you´re right, i´m a river person, born and raised at the shore, I´ve fished since I have memory, I´´ve always eaten my catch, or killed to use asr bait for bigger fish, but as i´m gettin´older I release, more fish than before...
@Quick4g The drift chute was an option, but we were worried about getting our line tangled in it... which probably would have happened. As for the guy in the water... that's the camera man getting some close shots.
I've caught and released many Marlin over the years but NEVER in a kayak... Not a fan of canoes so probably will never go there but it sure is cool watching these guys do it...
Awesome video and catch! I gotta say that has to be one unforgetable lifetime experience right there. Goes to show pushing the limits has big rewards! Good to see the beautiful creature was revived and released back in the end too.. Kudo's to you guys!!
If you guys honestly think he was just fishing for smaller fish with 20 lb test then you will believe anything. The heavy duty steel braided leader that was removed from the fish is not traditionally attached to 20 lb test. I commend the guy for pulling in such a mammoth, but it was planned, and brought in with much heavier line.
@Kayak4Fish Come to think of it what you say makes sense. Now I'm wondering if I should perhaps get lighter rods too. Was planning on a couple of Penn International V RS/RF Standup 50-100lbs, only $160 each. Roller on first and last guides only hence the saving.
I guess the main thing regarding the reels is a good robust drag of at least 25lbs.
Thanks once more for your valuable suggestions :)
Amazing, This was even caught on film making it more believable, lol if you walked in and told a story like this without video proof many would think you were telling a fisherman's tall tale, You are truly blessed to have such a great day of fishing, the best to you all fellow fisherman, I wish you and all the other fisherman here the best of luck on the water.
Thats got of be the more craziest experience...caught a Marlin in a kayak...and managed to get it out of the water, soo awesome!
Marlin Ahumado is a big time food on coastal areas of Mexico. It's really good when it's been smoked. They make amazing Tostadas with them... Just saying, don't knock it til you try it. Please don't say I'm an idiot, unless you have been to Mexico and tried this...
@cd2m dude like the black marlin largest weight ever recorded was over 1,000 lbs a regular black marlin 500 to 600 lbs so its possible that marlin can be 300 pounds
Thank you for C & R. My son taught me that and it is mighty.
@Anchorman727272 it is possible that sharks eat him but the fish can not die if hes tired and you release him when hes in the water he takes the necesary oxigen in about 3 minutes to swim away from the danger
I kayak fish (freshwater) and I have to say, I don't get the whole "4 hour fight" stuff that seems to be going on so much now. I imagine the fish being totally worn out is probably having a pretty strong effect on the death rate of the released fish.
No matter how much it weighed, this guy fought this fish for 4+ hrs. (sitting down) from a kayak. That is awesome.!! Great job. The only thing I would have done is eat that fish....if that's a thing. Do they eat Marlin or are they just wall hangers.?? 🤔
@marcusjack 1) Where do you get your stats from?
2) He was realize, so its not like he died. He went out about his day like nothing happen.
@jeff71711 theyre not reeling it in though, theyre letting it jump out of the water over and over exhausting it. all the pulling or "towing"? thats being "towed" by a hook in the things lip for 5 hours. thats torture
not so much of how big is the fish you catch but fishing in a kayak is awesome!
@SirBser
I hear that Marlin are too full of heavy metal to eat - the ones they kill and take to shore for weighing just get taken to the landfill.
@calelandess The fish was caught on a Trinidad 14, that is I think the 5 marlin we have caught on that small reel. JS
@vjanda1 Well that Zodiac will have much more resistance than a kayak so you will need to gear up some. I have landed a 120 pound Tuna from my kayak and it is a much different fight than Marlin. Much more straight up and down so you will need some pulling power. I reel like a Talica 20 two speed would do the trick, loaded with 80 pound braid.
@veigvideos no, you can see a guy swimming in the water. thats nuts
My jaw dropped when the Marlin flew out the water.
I would never think a 20 pound line could hold a blue marlin!!!!
I'm glad to see you released it!
This has to best the most interesting story I have watched all week.
I must have missed the 'rod bent in half' part. Also, that white is 150 lbs...maybe. Never the less, great bite! Congrads!!
@Kayak4Fish They claim these rods have "soft tip sections that taper into powerful mid and butt sections." I think the longer 6' may be a better choice than the shorter 5'6" version. What rods do you use out of interes?
Thx
@JAMIEGRANTHAM32
Exactly! I do love fishing but I am not twisted enough to think the fish is having a great time when it got a hook in its mouth (if not in its entrails which happens often times with catfish)
People catch 10 pound trout on 1 pound leaders every day. The trout won't bite if it sees the line. They fight tough as hell too.
@nicerackbitch even if the marlin does just swim away, thats not the main threat. sharks is the biggest concern as when you are fighting the marlin, the sharks will follow it. not saying that it did die. also blue marlin are well known for having heart attacks while they re being fought so they could still easily have a heart attack afterwards and die of shock etc etc.
Awesome! Well fought my man and great to see you minimising the time the marlin was out of the water and releasing this fish back to fight another day! One quick question; I've never caught anything as big as this fish and certainly not whilst kayaking (!), I'll stick to mackerel off the south west English coast (!) but it looks maybe 100lbs or so at best.... certainly not 300lbs!! When I'm next in Florida (I presume that's where you guys are at!?!) I'll look you up! Thanks for a great vid!
Unreal!!! I would love to try this!!!
Tree hugging hippies are funny. Sweet vid!!!!!!!
the song is Brock Zeman - All These Roads
just 2 hours of searching...
1:00 - 1:10
"...somehow manages to keep the marlin at a stones throw..."
Well, duh. You can easily tow a man in a kayak around with 20 lb line. He probably could have tied his line off to the kayak & gone to sleep for a few hours. I'll be impressed when I see someone land a marlin with 20 lb test from a fixed position.
I landed a 150 lbs bull shark from land with a penn battle 4000 with 30lbs braid
Is it safe to take kayaks out into deep sea? Don't sharks often confuse things like surfboards for seals?
@Janusha I think in that light, the real thing to focus on is just what their intentions in fishing for marlins in the first place. For fun, or for a practical reason? If it was the latter, caught it, then they had a change of heart or the need was dropped then they set it free, it's alright I guess.
muito legal essa forma de pescar... queria ter essa oportunidade... parabéns a todos vocês...
how come the kayak keeps changing colors? orange to yellow? just wondering!
@steeeeever that is how long it takes to reel in ANY large fish, not just this particular one. He let the fish go, which is the most beautiful thing ever....trust me, the fish is perfectly fine
Big like
any body know if i can use the fly fish reel for every day fishing "the normal fishing not fly fishing" and do you think it is better to use the fly fishing reels thank you
Great feeling! I m fishing from a boat, but will try from a kayak this summer. Hope the fish will not turn me over.
I have a phobia of the ocean so just watching this makes me cry in fear that's why I don't tube
Super stuff, well done !
I'm about to try and hook a bluefin tuna in the Adriatic sea and need your advice :)
They grow to 600lbs but the average is 100-150.
I'll be using a 10ft zodiac that weighs about 500lbs with me and the 15hp outboard.
The usual tackle boats use over here is 80lbs rods and reels with 900 yards of 80lbs line.
Considering that I will be towed what tackle do you think I should get?
Thanks and tight lines !
You can eat marlin and they are actually very tasty, they need to be under 300lbs though. Larger marlin get way to tough from experience. This marlin would be good to eat, roughly 120 lbs it looks like.
Is there someone in the water holding onto the back of the kayak at the 1.30 minute mark?
@casey10614 Are you watching the same video? I don't think you are. It's clear in most of the shots that the marlin is -huge-. You might want to consider getting your eyes checked because that marlin is bigger than the guy and almost bigger than the kayak. Not that I care, mind you, but your comment is wrong and wrong needs to be pointed out.
@MrKayakFisho
No - I havn't contradicted myself, I said that "game" fishermen dont eat most of what they catch - because of the high levels of Mercury. I didnt say anything about them not being good eating.
Sure - lots of fish are tagged and returned - but you dont have any figures about the survival rates, because only a fraction of tagged fish are ever recovered.
I notice you havent commented on the mind set that makes it 'fun' to make these great fish suffer for no good reason.
Unbelievable Great tale You guys must have been in your glory.
@vjanda1 WEll I caught my 120 lb YTF on a Tiagra 12 two speed and the fish never really got that deep into the spool. I would recommend using braid line so you can get much more line on the smaller reels. In your zodiac you could always fire up the motor and chase the fish if it got too much line out on you. Those big 50 and 80 reels are so big they are not comfortable to fish with and in a boat with little weight it is tough to put on that much pressure anyway. JS
@MojoRisinist obviously you've never fished before ...and yes there are fish that are in captivity just check out coasts of chili...and fishing is so much fun and its better to release because theres not as much fish as there once was a few years ago...all fish caught from recreational fishing should be released to keep this sport strong for centuries to come. And this is a very clean release.
Didn’t Hemingway write a book about this? Lol!
claycastle pitch and putt. youghal, tommy hannon V declan o' shea kayak race.......watch this video its the best video on you tube..........
explain why the same fish bites my lure 3 times in one fishing trip? if they feel pain that is
These guys are doing it for sport, catch and release.
Obviously you don't know jack either. A large female marlin can get up to 1800 lbs however that would be about a 16 foot fish. I estimate that fish to be no more than 6 feet. Girth is about 32 to 36 inches. therefore using the accepted ratio for blue marlin (girth squared, multiplied by lower-jaw fork length, divided by 800) we come up with a weight of 116 pounds. Even if we push the measurements out to 80 inches by 42 inches it's only 176 pounds. Nowhere near 300.
@ultimatefighterispro The blue marlin (fought by Howard in the orange boat) was indeed around 300lb. The striped marlin (fought and landed by Matt in the yellow boat) was only around 125lb.
I was thinking the same thing, and it make me reread the work
does anybody know how to hook up a portable fishfinder to a kayak? i just have a regular kayak not a fishing kayak and i don't want to have to drill a bunch of holes in it or buy a bunch of diffrent things, does anybody know a simple way? i'm thinking about getting the humminbird 570
I'm happy for you guys, that has to be the best thing to happen!!!!!
Awesome!
Godspeed,
Capt Ben
@optical76 for sure.. i was waiting for it to turn into something like that.
When a fisherman weights a fish... it's about double weight, allways... lol
what type of line do you use for that kind of stuff?

that is awesome ............ what size/type tackle are you using?
Coolest saltwater fishing I've ever seen... just hope someday you don't have a marlin up next to your Kayak ready to release it, and that thousand pound Mako or even larger Great White decides to take your catch away from you for his his lunch... lol.
@DCurt2287 it wouldnt suck. it would be a joyous time. just b/c of the fact that he hung on with such weak line with a powerful fish on the end
do those lil kayaks come with motors?
