Apologies for a slightly shorter than usual case this week, I fell behind schedule with all of the audio and video development I've been doing, so I needed a case that was quick and easy from the heart. How about the coffeehouse verdict? - I kept my opinion out of this video, but I do believe Marvin's case was conclusively seen in a much brighter light with thanks to no one else getting injured or worse. Should it have ended differently... I think people would have viewed him a lot more different too. Personally I find it difficult to accept Marvin as an all-round good man after he shot at officers and people with intent... But that's just my opinion! What if the money he would’ve gotten wouldn’t have been enough to get back what he had? He was exploited and pushed to the edge. No one protected his rights. Those who wronged him where assholes if they weren't he would have been hooked up through the pipes that were in the "site spotted" factory, and if they weren't he would have been allowed to build the road to connect his business to the main road but not even that they allowed him. He was willing to cooperate and do that but they took what he had in life and it costed him his future in terms of all his retirement, so he was cornered. Its sad but he was right in that "small town farmers" politics are corrupted. I'm sure you would be mad if you experienced enough corruption to the point where you can't even find justice you would protest wouldn't you?

The way Heemeyer was treated is like the perfect snapshot of power-mad administrators in small-town America. There are thousands of stories just like this where the little guy just gets stepped on and gives up. But every now and then you get a Marvin.

This guy is actually a folk hero. One of my favorite true crime stories by far because few can blame him for what he did. He was the only one who got hurt, I don’t feel bad for the corrupt local government.
Coffeehouse is wildly off on this. They didn't cut off his road, he had the same road access as before, and is the same access road that is there today. They didn't cut off his sewer, he never hooked into it. He was just pumping his overflowing septic tank, which was just a cement truck barrel burried into the ground, into a local stream. He could have paid 80k to build the necessary lines into the sewer system, which is what everyone else did, build a proper septic tank, or if he dropped his lawsuit against the cement plant they would pay to have his line hooked into theirs. He wasn't poor either, his shop made good money. Everyone was bending over backwards for this entitled jerk.

There's a documentary that goes into it deeper. I've seen it and researched this case after watching the documentary. They screwed him over in every which way they could. And he lived and thrived in that small town for years always as the kinda guy you can count on to lend a hand or help a neighbor or a friend a good man to his community. But his community turned on him in favor of the almighty dollar.
That documentary may not be an accurate account of the story (nor may the social media legend.) There's a book written by a local journalist (Patrick Brower) who witnessed the rampage and had covered the 10+ years of ongoing bad blood between Heemeyer and the city (Heemeyer had filed many complaints/suits against other businesses/the city for various reasons over the years leading up to the incident) which paints a much different picture and backs it up with Heemeyer's own audio recordings and writings as well as court documents etc. In it he points out that Heemeyer's property had an easement allowing access the entire time (complete with a picture of the property the day after the rampage clearly showing an access easement behind the shop.) The access "road" running through the property bought by the concrete company was not actually a road/easement. It was just a path he'd been using because the lot was empty. The only mention of an easement in the audio recordings and other evidence refered to one he needed to attach his property to the town's sewage system. It was never denied. When Heemeyer found out what the cost would be, he stopped his attempt to get one and never tried again. The author could only trace mentions of the "access easement denial" part of the story to the internet and assumed it must have been an intentional/unintentional misrepresentation of the sewage easement issue which ended up becoming part of the internet legend. The author also refutes the idea that Heemeyer never intended bodily harm to anyone by pointing out that he had guns mounted on the dozer which he did fire a few times when approached by police and that there were people (including the author) in the town's newspaper building when he started dozing it who barely made it out before their areas collapsed. He also points out that Heemeyer ended up selling the property on his own (for ~10 times it's appraised value) long before the rampage (surprising the town as there were still some decisions on the matter still pending at the time) and rather than use that money to purchase new land and build a new shop etc., he used it to build his dozer instead.

That guy had been fucking with him for years, writing bad stories, avoiding him for ad space and just being a general asshole since he was in on it with the town council. Marv was denied an easement to access the property by Cody, he was also denied a chance to hook up to the sewage main by hooking up to Cody's. They all swear he had the easement and they were all best buddies with him, which is easy to do once the man is dead and no longer able to defend himself. There's also the fact that the town expected him to go over 80k out of pocket for the sewage line, yet Cody wasn't billed anywhere near that much
He was offered like 8x more than he paid for the land, but demanded more, after a previous upping of the price. Hard to argue that he was shafted by that.
I feel like he was treated poorly by the city and driven into a hole where he couldn't see anywhere out. Not that what he did was right but I don't feel like he was an awful man, just desperate and had nothing to lose.

What I don't understand is how they can just cut off his right of way and sewage line like that. In my country that would be illegal, every registered property is entitled to a right of way to the nearest road and access to public utilities. The fact that a sewage line was ALREADY there yet they cut it and just left him to deal with it...

I watched the Netflix documentary on this man. Truly heartbreaking. I understand they had to tell both sides of the story, but it rubbed me entirely the wrong way how the family said that everything that happened to Marvin wasn't true, and since he was dead, there was no one to argue with the statements the family made. Side note. I always found it humorous that it was called the "Killdozer", yet Marvin did not get any blood on his hands.

This is the first time I actually rooted for the “villain” because he wasn’t actually the bad guy, the bad guys were that big corporation and the town councils that let him down! I live in a city where the mayor is letting real estate investors inflict all types of unscrupulous manners to get 4 and 5 generations of families to sell their property. I'M NOT MOVING !! I have empathy for Marvin, that was his home. My story is simple but heartfelt.

The destroyed private property was most likely insured, which means that all the customers of the that insurance company paid for the damage through higher premiums. Public property may have been similarly insured, or repairs might be paid by taxpayers. At the cost of his life, he harmed the finances a lot of innocent bystanders, and likely did nothing to the individuals he targeted.
I remember this being all over the news when I was a kid and I watched the Netflix special too. Crazy what happens when a person feels they have nothing left to lose

I am a Colorado resident and I remember watching all of the news coverage. I also have family that lived in Granby at the time and the reason nobody got hurt is because he would bump the building, honk five or six times wait for everybody to leave and then crush it.

There's not even a record of Heemeyer doing any sort of thing and "warning" residents before he continued on his rampage. I've read several articles and watched several videos about this, and my understanding is that Marvin was screwed by the concrete plant and the city council-- they refused him an easement for himself and his customers to reach his business. I don't blame him for his anger. True: he went to a wild extreme, but his every effort towards an amicable agreement was just rudely denied. So, in a way, this was poetic justice... and fatal to only himself (he clearly meant no harm to any one or more persons). My heart goes out to his pain, and I gladly cheer what he did. Call me an A-hole, but I'm on this guy's side. May he Rest In Peace.

I think it had more to do with him not being connected to the sewer line since he was dumping human waste into the local creek, which is illegal and for which he was fined. Also the negotiations for the selling of the land occurred before the zoning proposal was even presented, so Marvin going back on the deal basically threw a wrench in everything that was already agreed upon, since he was suddenly asking for more money. 2 wrongs don't make a right, and the same can be said for Marvin as well.
They didn't really cut him off though. He had sold the business months prior and the new business owners brought everything up to code immediately. He leased the property from the new business owners for months and lived in his workshop as he made killdozer and then went on his rampage. Brilliant engineer, absolute dick of a human being.
I’m glad everyone is on the same page as me, Marvin was actually a hero, everyone did him dirty and treated him wrong, he killed no one he only destroyed buildings I think that’s what he wanted was to harm buildings not people, because he started hitting buildings that people didn’t use.

Yeah, he was driving a hard bargain for his land, but the cost of moving and rebuilding everything would be substantial. Then for the City itself to deny access to a business? Marvin lost an auction for land that was adjoining his property. He lost not because There wasn't some big conspiracy against him, and his access was never blocked off (that seems to have been made up for effect by someone). In fact, the person that had supposedly "wronged" him even offered this idiot access to the local sewer line from their property. This would have resolved the whole thing, and he wouldn't have had ANY fines. But you want to know what Marvin did? He threw a fit like a small child because he wasn't going to "win" the argument. Then he spent more than a hundred thousand dollars on a brand new top of the line bulldozer (Komatsu D355A), and then poured many more thousands into the parts and tools necessary to turn it into a weapon. This is was a multi-millionaire narcissistic asshole that was unable to let go of his grudges; not some poor downtrodden man at the end of his rope. His business wasn't even failing, and he even had a million dollar home with an excellent view. The dude had an amazing life, but it wasn't good enough for Marvin. Even in his own ramblings left behind he states the following, "God blessed me in advance for the task that I am about to undertake. It is my duty. God has asked me to do this. It's a cross that I am going to carry and I'm carrying it in God's name." This guy was not some hero to be worshiped, you have been sold a bill of goods. You would do well to look more into the reality of this case rather than the folklore.

And you know all Marvin had to do to resolve the whole thing? Drop the lawsuit that he was about to lose. If he had, the family that owned the concrete plant offered to pay for getting him access to the sewer system. They even offered to buy out his land, and matched his offering price TWICE. Every time he would come back with a bigger and bigger counter-offer. The dude wasn't the person "wronged", he was the asshole that had to win the dispute no matter the cost. The family even tried to do a land-swap where he would get a lot connected to a main road that already had a sewer connection. He agreed at first, and then demanded that they also build him a new 4k sq ft building on the new lot for him. He was never reasonable. If he didn't get his way, he would throw a tantrum and hold a grudge (no different than a toddler). He did this to himself.

Or did you mean talking about the details of why he went apeshit instead of just highlighting the destruction? Also, I wonder what the actual value of the land could have been. Can't say I know small town Colorado real estate circa 15 years ago. Just because they talk about multiple times what he paid, does not mean that it was an unwarranted sum (though I am inclined to believe it was, as you do). The house I live in is currently valued at something like 4x or so what I paid 7 or so years ago when I got it, due to the market being a buyers market at the time and getting it as a foreclosure, then seeing a rebound of the market. And it isn't like I have some super valuable place in the middle of a giant city or something where the price would naturally be sky high. Just some food for thought. Okay, he kept upping the price. The first one was 4 times what he paid for it, the 2nd one was over 6 times the price. Then he upped it to over 15 times the amount. He is a dick.

Yep! This is exactly how I feel. It started reasonably with a man trying to save his business. But ended with an unreasonable man that was pushed to his limits. When big business is allowed to walk on the little guy eventually desperation will turn to revenge. He was Willing to die to achieve this goal! Very sad indeed.
I've assisted people with construction and property development for years. The government should never agree to anything that landlocks an existing property. I can only assume their development and zoning codes were just not properly written, or some amount of corruption or malice was involved.
Town council was a corrupt good old boys club. They were out to get Marvin for buying that piece of land. The concrete company wanted the land but didn't out bid Marvin and was a sore loser. The man and his dozer are the hero's in the story.
While I agree that no one should be blocked access to their property, Marvin made a mistake. At first he agreed to sell his land for 250k, then 375k which the other party agreed to. Asking for 1M AFTER he said yes to 375k is not right. You either be a man of your word or say no when offered the 375k. I don't know how much land costs there but is 1M reasonable?
Marvin was not the only guilty one in this story. Very sad, I can only imagine how frustrated he must have been, when you cannot win no matter how hard you try.
He was responsible for his own downfall. He made a deal then reneged because he got greedy. When it blew up in his face, he threw the mother of all temper tantrums like Liberal Larry in an earth mover🙄

If the actual accounts of the dealings are true then it does look like he was getting greedy thinking the larger cement company would keep biting on his higher asking prices because they had the deep money pockets and would need the extra space. I also don't get how he was cut off from his property if the trash company leased it and liked it enough to offer $400k? They must've had access to the property including reasonable plumbing and electrical power. Something doesn't make sense there which is why I'm wondering if we are getting the real or whole story. When someone destroys many businesses and is no longer here to defend themselves we are left with the story from other sides so we need to factor this in. Though I do find it odd that he felt he was trapped when his business was not geographically reliant on that spot in order to operate like say for example the way a skiing outfit would need a certain mountain sloped property. He already had built a good business reputation so could have used his great real estate profits to open a new welding business anywhere within his reputable range. Customers would have followed and with the property profits he could have built a better facility! Sounds like he knew he was talented and successful and started thinking he was integral or indispensable to the town for its survival. In other words he thought he was the top guy in town and when he saw there was a limit to his demands his ego got in the way of rational thinking. He was obviously very talented, crafty, and patient, but too bad he wasn't very rational or happy.

The concrete plant agreed to remove their road and to give him and 250k, but he refused and demanded he instead should be paid $1M, (I presume for being demonized by local media.) had he accepted the already large sum of money, this entire incident would never had happened. Instead of settling, he felt the need to use his creation in some morbid power trip. He also very well could have killed several people. You don’t just equip your dozer with a 50 cal sniper rifle+3 other guns if you have no intention of hurting someone. Ive done a fair bit of digging around marvin and im afraid lots of his story is bunk. They never cut off his utilities or his road. He bought that property for a relative pittance, ran his business out of it and made good money. He didnt have a sewer line, it just discharged out the back of the property, which was a violation of the use of the land which he agreed to when he bought it. He even used to laugh to his friends that he was getting away with it. When the local gov finally started chasing him up, they gave him nearly 2 years to sort it out. He just refused out of spite. After a bunch of back and forwards, the concrete plant even agreed to let him run it through their property, but he refused. again out of spite. By the end of it, he sold his business and property, and house for WAY more than he bought it. He had other business interests as well so that muffler shop was NOT his only income. Honestly the man could have easily just walked away, moved towns and retired. The man had so much money he bought that dozer, and spent a year not working, spending money on building it up and paying rent on that property. He was WAY ahead financially, he could have just made a start elsewhere and forgotten about the town he hated. BUT by the end, he had stubbornly convinced himself of this grand crusade justified by his insane religious beliefs that he decided to end his perfectly serviceable life and destroy in the process. I used to think he was a hero, but the more i learned... turns out he had a few too many roo's in the top paddock.

Apologies for a slightly shorter than usual case this week, I fell behind schedule with all of the audio and video development I've been doing, so I needed a case that was quick and easy from the heart.
How about the coffeehouse verdict? - I kept my opinion out of this video, but I do believe Marvin's case was conclusively seen in a much brighter light with thanks to no one else getting injured or worse. Should it have ended differently... I think people would have viewed him a lot more different too. Personally I find it difficult to accept Marvin as an all-round good man after he shot at officers and people with intent... But that's just my opinion! The man had creativity, I have to give him that.

This guy is actually a folk hero. One of my favorite true crime stories by far because few can blame him for what he did. He was the only one who got hurt, I don’t feel bad for the corrupt local government.
Coffeehouse is wildly off on this. They didn't cut off his road, he had the same road access as before, and is the same access road that is there today. They didn't cut off his sewer, he never hooked into it. He was just pumping his overflowing septic tank, which was just a cement truck barrel burried into the ground, into a local stream. He could have paid 80k to build the necessary lines into the sewer system, which is what everyone else did, build a proper septic tank, or if he dropped his lawsuit against the cement plant they would pay to have his line hooked into theirs. He wasn't poor either, his shop made good money. Everyone was bending over backwards for this entitled jerk.

Now for the historical truth. Marvin had a septic tank. Marvin couldn't hook up to water and sewer line because of the Dick Thompson and Ron Thompson scam. The Thompsons are criminals. Strange that Larry and Gary and psychopath Cody Docheff don't realize the fact that the WHOLE WORLD sees them as corrupt, bullies and murderers of a great man. They, their children, their grandchildren, their great-grandchildren have the seal of Cain on them. They are murderers. It would be far better for them to apologize to Marvin's family and thus remove this stigma of murderers from themselves and their descendants.

There's a documentary that goes into it deeper. I've seen it and researched this case after watching the documentary. They screwed him over in every which way they could. And he lived and thrived in that small town for years always as the kinda guy you can count on to lend a hand or help a neighbor or a friend a good man to his community. But his community turned on him in favor of the almighty dollar.

That documentary may not be an accurate account of the story (nor may the social media legend.) There's a book written by a local journalist (Patrick Brower) who witnessed the rampage and had covered the 10+ years of ongoing bad blood between Heemeyer and the city (Heemeyer had filed many complaints/suits against other businesses/the city for various reasons over the years leading up to the incident) which paints a much different picture and backs it up with Heemeyer's own audio recordings and writings as well as court documents etc.
In it he points out that Heemeyer's property had an easement allowing access the entire time (complete with a picture of the property the day after the rampage clearly showing an access easement behind the shop.) The access "road" running through the property bought by the concrete company was not actually a road/easement. It was just a path he'd been using because the lot was empty. The only mention of an easement in the audio recordings and other evidence refered to one he needed to attach his property to the town's sewage system. It was never denied. When Heemeyer found out what the cost would be, he stopped his attempt to get one and never tried again. The author could only trace mentions of the "access easement denial" part of the story to the internet and assumed it must have been an intentional/unintentional misrepresentation of the sewage easement issue which ended up becoming part of the internet legend.
The author also refutes the idea that Heemeyer never intended bodily harm to anyone by pointing out that he had guns mounted on the dozer which he did fire a few times when approached by police and that there were people (including the author) in the town's newspaper building when he started dozing it who barely made it out before their areas collapsed.
He also points out that Heemeyer ended up selling the property on his own (for ~10 times it's appraised value) long before the rampage (surprising the town as there were still some decisions on the matter still pending at the time) and rather than use that money to purchase new land and build a new shop etc., he used it to build his dozer instead.

Marv was denied an easement to access the property by Cody, he was also denied a chance to hook up to the sewage main by hooking up to Cody's. They all swear he had the easement and they were all best buddies with him, which is easy to do once the man is dead and no longer able to defend himself. There's also the fact that the town expected him to go over 80k out of pocket for the sewage line, yet Cody wasn't billed anywhere near that much
He was offered like 8x more than he paid for the land, but demanded more, after a previous upping of the price. Hard to argue that he was shafted by that.
I feel like he was treated poorly by the city and driven into a hole where he couldn't see anywhere out. Not that what he did was right but I don't feel like he was an awful man, just desperate and had nothing to lose.

What I don't understand is how they can just cut off his right of way and sewage line like that. In my country that would be illegal, every registered property is entitled to a right of way to the nearest road and access to public utilities. The fact that a sewage line was ALREADY there yet they cut it and just left him to deal with it...

I watched the Netflix documentary on this man. Truly heartbreaking. I understand they had to tell both sides of the story, but it rubbed me entirely the wrong way how the family said that everything that happened to Marvin wasn't true, and since he was dead, there was no one to argue with the statements the family made.
Side note. I always found it humorous that it was called the "Killdozer", yet Marvin did not get any blood on his hands.

I live in a city where the mayor is letting real estate investors inflict all types of unscrupulous manners to get 4 and 5 generations of families to sell their property. I'M NOT MOVING !! I have empathy for Marvin, that was his home. My story is simple but heartfelt.

The destroyed private property was most likely insured, which means that all the customers of the that insurance company paid for the damage through higher premiums. Public property may have been similarly insured, or repairs might be paid by taxpayers. At the cost of his life, he harmed the finances a lot of innocent bystanders, and likely did nothing to the individuals he targeted.

I am a Colorado resident and I remember watching all of the news coverage. I also have family that lived in Granby at the time and the reason nobody got hurt is because he would bump the building, honk five or six times wait for everybody to leave and then crush it.

There's not even a record of Heemeyer doing any sort of thing and "warning" residents before he continued on his rampage. This is most certainly an urban myth to anyone with an ounce of common sense, and I'm surprised that I even have to explain this concept.
I've read several articles and watched several videos about this, and my understanding is that Marvin was screwed by the concrete plant and the city council-- they refused him an easement for himself and his customers to reach his business. I don't blame him for his anger. True: he went to a wild extreme, but his every effort towards an amicable agreement was just rudely denied. So, in a way, this was poetic justice... and fatal to only himself (he clearly meant no harm to any one or more persons). My heart goes out to his pain, and I gladly cheer what he did. Call me an A-hole, but I'm on this guy's side. May he Rest In Peace.

As someone who lives in the next town over from the place in this story, this man went down in Granby history as a hero. Quite an impressive feat if you ask me, but knowing the economy of this area I understand his actions completely.

They deliberately cut off his utilities and his access to his own business. Even after he would have been willing to build his own road he was refused. The would have simply starved him out.
He went back in their deal. Wanted more money and eventually got shut out for his greed. How is this the companies fault?

I think it had more to do with him not being connected to the sewer line since he was dumping human waste into the local creek, which is illegal and for which he was fined. Also the negotiations for the selling of the land occurred before the zoning proposal was even presented, so Marvin going back on the deal basically threw a wrench in everything that was already agreed upon, since he was suddenly asking for more money. 2 wrongs don't make a right, and the same can be said for Marvin as well.
They didn't really cut him off though. He had sold the business months prior and the new business owners brought everything up to code immediately. He leased the property from the new business owners for months and lived in his workshop as he made killdozer and then went on his rampage. Brilliant engineer, absolute dick of a human being.

Metaphorically speaking there’s a Marvin in all of us. That town broke that man. He didn’t destroyed the town, the township destroyed itself and Marvin along with it.

Yeah, he was driving a hard bargain for his land, but the cost of moving and rebuilding everything would be substantial.

@@crystalm4324 That is the thing, the guy wasn't "wronged" though. The guy was an absolute asshole that had some serious anger issues. You want to know what kicked this whole thing off? Marvin lost an auction for land that was adjoining his property. He lost not because There wasn't some big conspiracy against him, and his access was never blocked off (that seems to have been made up for effect by someone). In fact, the person that had supposedly "wronged" him even offered this idiot access to the local sewer line from their property. This would have resolved the whole thing, and he wouldn't have had ANY fines. But you want to know what Marvin did? He threw a fit like a small child because he wasn't going to "win" the argument. Then he spent more than a hundred thousand dollars on a brand new top of the line bulldozer (Komatsu D355A), and then poured many more thousands into the parts and tools necessary to turn it into a weapon. This is was a multi-millionaire narcissistic asshole that was unable to let go of his grudges; not some poor downtrodden man at the end of his rope. His business wasn't even failing, and he even had a million dollar home with an excellent view. The dude had an amazing life, but it wasn't good enough for Marvin. Even in his own ramblings left behind he states the following, "God blessed me in advance for the task that I am about to undertake. It is my duty. God has asked me to do this. It's a cross that I am going to carry and I'm carrying it in God's name."
This guy was not some hero to be worshiped, you have been sold a bill of goods. You would do well to look more into the reality of this case rather than the folklore.

Every time he would come back with a bigger and bigger counter-offer. The dude wasn't the person "wronged", he was the asshole that had to win the dispute no matter the cost. The family even tried to do a land-swap where he would get a lot connected to a main road that already had a sewer connection. He agreed at first, and then demanded that they also build him a new 4k sq ft building on the new lot for him. He was never reasonable. If he didn't get his way, he would throw a tantrum and hold a grudge (no different than a toddler). He did this to himself.

The house I live in is currently valued at something like 4x or so what I paid 7 or so years ago when I got it, due to the market being a buyers market at the time and getting it as a foreclosure, then seeing a rebound of the market. And it isn't like I have some super valuable place in the middle of a giant city or something where the price would naturally be sky high.

I've assisted people with construction and property development for years. The government should never agree to anything that landlocks an existing property. I can only assume their development and zoning codes were just not properly written, or some amount of corruption or malice was involved.

Town council was a corrupt good old boys club. They were out to get Marvin for buying that piece of land. The concrete company wanted the land but didn't out bid Marvin and was a sore loser. The man and his dozer are the hero's in the story.

While I agree that no one should be blocked access to their property, Marvin made a mistake. At first he agreed to sell his land for 250k, then 375k which the other party agreed to. Asking for 1M AFTER he said yes to 375k is not right. You either be a man of your word or say no when offered the 375k. I don't know how much land costs there but is 1M reasonable?
Marvin was not the only guilty one in this story. Very sad, I can only imagine how frustrated he must have been, when you cannot win no matter how hard you try.

If the actual accounts of the dealings are true then it does look like he was getting greedy thinking the larger cement company would keep biting on his higher asking prices because they had the deep money pockets and would need the extra space. I also don't get how he was cut off from his property if the trash company leased it and liked it enough to offer $400k? They must've had access to the property including reasonable plumbing and electrical power. Something doesn't make sense there which is why I'm wondering if we are getting the real or whole story. When someone destroys many businesses and is no longer here to defend themselves we are left with the story from other sides so we need to factor this in. Though I do find it odd that he felt he was trapped when his business was not geographically reliant on that spot in order to operate like say for example the way a skiing outfit would need a certain mountain sloped property. Sounds like he knew he was talented and successful and started thinking he was integral or indispensable to the town for its survival. In other words he thought he was the top guy in town and when he saw there was a limit to his demands his ego got in the way of rational thinking. I remember watching this in the news documentary when I was a kid. We were all rooting for him.
They decided to build around his business making it basically impossible for him to get any business as it would have taken an hour to get around that plant.

Ive done a fair bit of digging around marvin and im afraid lots of his story is bunk.
They never cut off his utilities or his road. He bought that property for a relative pittance, ran his business out of it and made good money. He didnt have a sewer line, it just discharged out the back of the property, which was a violation of the use of the land which he agreed to when he bought it. He even used to laugh to his friends that he was getting away with it. When the local gov finally started chasing him up, they gave him nearly 2 years to sort it out. He just refused out of spite. After a bunch of back and forwards, the concrete plant even agreed to let him run it through their property, but he refused. again out of spite.
By the end of it, he sold his business and property, and house for WAY more than he bought it. He had other business interests as well so that muffler shop was NOT his only income. Honestly the man could have easily just walked away, moved towns and retired. The man had so much money he bought that dozer, and spent a year not working, spending money on building it up and paying rent on that property. He was WAY ahead financially, he could have just made a start elsewhere and forgotten about the town he hated.
BUT by the end, he had stubbornly convinced himself of this grand crusade justified by his insane religious beliefs that he decided to end his perfectly serviceable life and destroy in the process. I used to think he was a hero, but the more i learned... turns out he had a few too many roo's in the top paddock.

Why, exactly, should it have been their problem that the guy was "smart" enough to buy a piece of land that was only accessible through another piece of land...that he DID NOT OWN?

Bruv land is expensive . and now someone is cutting you off from your home and business that you love . on top of that the city council was also in the wrong . they didn't find a solution to this problem and straight up declined his propositions.
