- Summer Flounder (Fluke) fishing is improving. After putting dinner in the cooler I used the new heavy 6-ounce Tsunami flutter spoons (amzn.to/3IK3iDV) to catch a bunch of stripers and bluefish in heavy holiday boat traffic.

Hey John, Finally got some keeper fluke in Narragansett Bay yesterday. Right around the corner from where you were striper fishing. Huge porgies also. Good to see them back
I really like that new camera angle off the stern. I'm a Connecticut angler and your tips are very helpful. Thanks, Bryan
Outstanding work as usual. They were some jumbo blues.
Idk why im so happy you finally got a dehooker. For toothy fish or deeper hooksets its worth its weight in gold. Been in my tackle box for years. I also love it for decreasing the amount of unnecessary handling of shorts
Been a green guy for almost 9 years now. Chartreuse bucktails, block island green bottles and darters…
I was dying the first clip lol. I couldn't believe how much of a difference trim made when I got it for the first time. I was obsessed.
Hi John,
My son and I were out there on Friday too, on the morning outgoing. Had a few nice bass on bucktails and a whole bunch of giant blues. I was having trouble using the spoon in that current so I'm happy to see a heavier spoon. When I retrieved the spoon the blues were chasing it right to the boat. On the way back in we considered stopping where you were catching fluke but we opted to continue on and hit another spot for weaks. We had some nice weaks but after seeing your vid, I regret not stopping for fluke. Oh well.
Nice outing, Big Blues are pretty tough!
Hey John, 2 weeks ago we fished that same area for fluke on John Halkias subscriber trip, there was definitely fluke in that area, I dropped a nice one by the barge, puffer fish were biting the tails off of my gulp, I even hooked one near the end, as far as the bass were concerned, I had a hard time with the Tony Maja flutter jigs, they took forever to get to the bottom, Jessie who was bucktailing was hammering them, that's my second preferred method for bass, my first is live bunker, if the TM spoons had just a little more weight they would be a lot easier to handle.
I may pick up some heavier spoons.
Jay
Brass Flutter spoons .Love you stuff Sir !!
I agree, white or bone has always been my choice. Thanks for another great video!
Uncle Moe makes so good gear!
Everyone poo poos the sea robins but they eat good. In France they are a staple in Bouillabaise. Fry up nice.
Great video as always!!
Definitely good eating fish
Another great fishing trip! Fluke season started 🙂 Interesting de-hooker - seems pretty effective!
Love your fishing channel and your narration
I've found that white will ALWAYS catch something. Other colors might be better at some time but its always dependant on conditions. White always works!!!
In my 50+ years of fishing out of Atlantic Highlands NJ one thing I learned from all the mates was "If it ain't Chartreuse" it ain't no use.
.
Chartreuse seems to catch everything from bottom fish to salmon out here in the NW.
Just finished fishing the edge. A few minutes ago. I’m looking forward to trying some new things after reading it. I’m actually looking forward to trying for a NH Black Sea Bass this year, and with any luck some giant stripers from the kayak.
I'm glad you found the book motivating!
John for me up on the Raritan the shattered glass gold spoon by Ben parker works outstanding
I actually went to all black spoons after watching one of your videos. Never going back.
Got a 21 inch fluke on a reef today in Jersey...
Greenport Harbor! I finally recognize where you're fishing. Even heard the once-a-day LIRR train!
Nice, yeah it's picking up. I had my limit yesterday.
Awesome! Just in time for Billy's.
i used to live in Orient and Greenport. i miss that place. i just spotted where you are, off Prestons.
I understand why you miss it. It's so awesome having the bay on one side and the sound on the other.
I like chrome with a hammered finish or prism tape finish
Those sea robins are delicious if they are a decent size !
Hey John i would greatly appreciate it if you used the tsunami carbon shield 2 or the slim wave or something he trophy slow pitch from shore in some of you videos
Have you eaten sea robin? Delicious! In Europe, they’re known as Gunnard and served in restaurants
Yes. It was just boring.
I love eating sea robins
I’m sure this will be seen as a stupid question but why are stripers so much more desirable to catch than blues if you are releasing?
John, your smiling bucktails for stripers are iconic and have been my go-to. I even put one on my Christmas tree this past year, took about 3 days before my wife noticed because they’re so beautiful. Any word if any other maker is going to pick up where S&S left off with your jigs?
I expect there will be a solution that doesn't involve me in my basement tying jigs. Thanks for asking!
Nice but the eyeballs fall off in 1 day
Hi John love your channel can you tell me where I can get the flutter spoon you where using thanks jim
There's a link in the video description.
are you crushing the barbs on the treble hooks?
Definitely. I think it's a win all around because they set easier too.
nice vid skinner
Would a flutter spoon work in the back bays for bass or is that just out front.
I think most back bays would be too shallow for that, but I can't say for sure.
So the question arises do you pay much attentions to the solunar tables? what is your thinking here?
I never look at them. Wind and tide are what I find most important.
You carry both colors
White or gold spoons for me
RE: spoon color…all really condition dependent (as you can imagine)…but I personally don’t know anyone having better luck with plain vs. colors or patterns.
Boss what rod would you recommend to use for a 6000 thunnus ? Will be targeting blues , stripers , and maybe fluke
Beach or boat?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing beach
I'm biased because I designed this, but this is what I use with a 6000 - bit.ly/3ADKuCx. They make a 1- and 2-piece.
Hi John, What are the top 3 weights you use for bucktailing ? I know there are a lot of variables but if you could only pack 3 bucktails what size would you use and color ? Same for jig heads for porgies.
What species and environment?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Fluke , an average day. I am fairly new to fishing from a boat. Would be in your area Gardiners Bay , Peconic bays or near. So just an idea of what one should bring. Also how does yourthe Skinner Dark
Dark Matter rod compare to the tsunami rod you used in the past ?
@@jamesmatt-ms4eb This time of year I'm around P. Bay.
@@jamesmatt-ms4eb The Tsunami is modified with a hacksaw to get close to the desired action that the DM has. Also, the DM is spiral wrapped, which reduces torque and makes it much more comfortable. I also use the DM for big stripers in Plum Gut.
John at what depth would you start using a flutter spoon..I’m fishin from a hobie?
I caught between 90 and 50 feet on this video, but on a previous video in a different location the fish were hitting in around 25 feet.
Hey John, I live in upstate NY and want to make a trip to LI sound for false albacore. Is there any community or source you can point me in the direction of to help with researching what I will need to make a trip I’m a newbie when it comes to surf fishing😅
Take the treble off and use single bkk 5/0 tuna hook top and bottom… white is the color
I wondered about the assist hook up top, but I was cautioned on more fish being foul-hooked with hooks on both ends of the spoon.
do you ever fish out by Fire Island?
No. Too far.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ah cool that’s where I fish so I was wondering
What happens to the fish after they eat the gulp? Isn’t that toxic to fish?
They poop it out. It's biodegradable - not plastic.
Should do video on sunscreen or sun protection since your always on the water …hate dealing with sunscreen when fishing would like to know If you have any tips
My strategy is to cover up. You'll see that in my Florida videos.
I've been told if you touch your bait with sunscreen on your hands it will be rejected.
If it 'ain't chartreuse it 'aint no use!
John what pound braid do you use in the accurrist
15
Thank u
And do you use 20lb leader?
John (or anyone), can you explain to me why the handle on a conventional reel is always on the right side?? Why would anyone (right handed people) want the rod in there non-dominant hand. Right handers have their dominant hand on the rod when using a spinning reel!!! I watch pro bass fishermen cast with their right hand, then pass the rod to their left hand to reel in. This makes zero sense!! They don’t do that that with a spinning reel.
I’ve asked this question to more people then I can count, and no one has a legit explanation
Now that s&s is no longer in business are you going to find a new company for your bucktails? Or go back to tying your own?
Something will work out. If not I'll tie my own.
Mr. Skinner- Given the recent data and reg changes for bass I am wondering why you are sticking with trebles, even de-barbed? Ditto not netting your bass? Thanks
I know a few guys who have tried to use singles on these big flutter spoons, and they just didn't work well. There's a reason why no manufacturer that I'm aware of is marketing these with singles. I don't see an issue with unhooking a bass outside the boat instead of bringing it inside with a net.
🎣🤙🏼
What happened to the E-TEC?
Sold it. That was a 40, this one a 70.
It would behoove you not to take the Lord’s name in ain
No paid endorsement for an Air BNB today?
Ha, ha,,, only kidding.
Enjoy a Bud Light on me this holiday weekend !!!!
Bud light? That tranny beer?
