Well, from what I heard WB wanted Man of Steel to be Superman's Batman Begins. To the point they even brought the team behind that. They wanted Alien Batman, Amazonian Batman, Speedy Batman, Aqua Batman, Cyborg Batman etc. Sadly, WB and DC can't seem to think of anything interesting to do with Superman besides making him evil.

Superman's super hearing isn't just frustrating it's also traumatic. Imagine hearing someone about to be stabbed while another person is about to get hit by a car. Then having to choose which one to save. The ability to maintain his sanity is a power in itself. These dilemmas and moral complexities are super compelling. Superman is a fascinating character when in the hands of a great writer that can challenge him in these ways.

Everyone seems to have their own critique of what a character should be and with Superman it’s rather polarising.
When I was a little kid I used to watch the old serial animated superman show where his costume was darker and he was a silent yet vigilante hero who was a beacon of hope in a world of peril. There was a dramatic flair to superman that I think the reeves movies sadly lost because they focused on the charm and benevolence that superman is best known for. Cavill embodied the traits of the original superman from that old cartoon and that’s why he’s my favourite. I actually prefer a broody, gloomy, yet vigilant superman. This is why the Christopher Reeve movie is so iconic. That scene where he's having a conversation with his Jor-El after his first night really puts into perspective what this guy has to go through. All you need to do is watch that and you can write a really compelling dramatic storyline for him sandwiched by spectacular action, a touch of romance and some lighthearted humor.

For most of my life, I've always viewed Superman as "The Icon" and not as an actual character. I've always had respect for him from a historical standpoint, but for the most part, I saw him as more as an object and less as a tangible person . . . My entire perception of Superman has changed *COMPLETELY* with the advent of the animated series, "My Adventures with Superman."
Superman in MAWS is a fascinating character! He's so kind and charming, but he's also sympathetic and surprisingly complex, which I really appreciate. While I'm a casual comic book collector, I've mostly disregarded a majority of Superman comics, so I'm not that familiar with his stories or depictions in the comics, but from what I understand, many die-hard Superman fans (Those who actively read Superman comics) consider MAWS's take on Superman, himself, as one of the most accurate depictions of the character. In the wake of MAWS, I've been going down a huge Superman rabbit hole, going out of my way to read more Superman comics (I read John Byrne's "Superman: The Man of Steel", "Superman: Peace on Earth", and "All-Star Superman" for the first time last year), exposing myself to "good" Superman adaptations in other media (I've been watching the 90's "Superman: The Animated Series" for the very first time this year in between new MAWS episodes), and overall expanding my knowledge on his lore in the DC Universe.
I've never felt more inspired and passionate about Superman at any other point in my life and I owe it all to MAWS for enlightening me. For me, personally, MAWS single-handedly saved ANY shred of hope I had for the character, especially after being utterly disappointed by how terrible his character was handled in the DCEU (Thank God THAT mess is finally over!). MAWS Superman is the Superman I never knew I wanted and I'm so thankful for it. MAWS Superman is the first modern adaptation of Superman, or ANY superhero adaptation in recent memory, to make me feel legitimately happy and hopeful for the first time in a real long while. :)

Great video man!👍🏿That's right Superman was NEVER boring! He's always been very interesting as a superhero and I should know cause I've always loved him since first watching him on my old VHS cartoon tape during my late 80's childhood. Besides there's always been more to him than just his powers, its also what he's always represented as a superhero for years...HOPE TRUTH & JUSTICE!!! And also real goodness in the real world. Also there have been times when he didn't have his powers but still managed and still proven himself to be quite a survivor. He also has a big brain himself and knows how and when to strategize too just as Batman does. Those who say he's boring these days just don't know him as well as they think and sometimes its those recent evil versions of Superman that make them get the wrong idea about him.
Anyway I hope this new "Superman: Legacy" movie coming will prove to be a great success when it comes!

1:38 Something relevant to discuss is that you can generate a lot of conflict in Superman stories without having his villains be overpowered/remove Clark’s powers, by focusing on Superman trying to avoid collateral damage. A villain doesn’t need to be stronger than Superman to cause conflict, they just need to endanger civilians enough so Clark needs to think out how to rescue people while causing as little collateral damage as possible. Superman works really well as a fire-and-rescue guy, and the story can be interesting if Clark has to plan how he will rescue people instead of just punching his problems into submission.

His powers are great, but the best part of Superman is that despite his powers, he's just a good guy who wants to help people and try to do the right thing. That's what's needed from the character in this world, now more than ever. I get frustrated with Zack Snyder's take on Superman because of how it not only fails to understand Superman, but it goes against the morals and ideals Superman stands for. Not to mention how overused the evil Superman trope has been as of late. Making Superman evil doesn't make him any more interesting. Good Superman is better and much more needed.

At this current time, I think that the best Superman runs in a chronologic order on when they happened in Clark's life, not when they were written would be:
"Superman For All Seasons" - Showing mostly a young Clark about to leave for Metropolis but still unsure of himself beyond knowing that he was meant to help people, his relationship with Lana Lang and his family, while Lois is still on the outside. But his main opponent is an older, more slick Lex.
Next "All Star Superman" - The is my Most Favorite Superman Storyline ever. And when James Gunn talks about the new movie this Comic Book Cover keeps showing up. It shows all of Clark's sides - Clark Kent, Kal-El, and Superman. And it shows him at his most powerful and yet all of his qualities that are way beyond powers that make him Great. Kindness, Compassion, patience, to be supportive and caring when people are in their most painful and darkest places.
    - There is a scene where a young girl is about to commit suicide. She thinks her Psychiatrist is ditching her. But actually she's on a broken El train. Supes is talking to Lois. His head quirks and he says to Lois that someone needs help. You see the girl on the ledge as she drops her phone while she is on a ledge of a skyscraper, about to step of. Suddenly he is there. Just for her.
"You're doctor really did get held up. It is never as bad as it seems. You're much stronger than you think you are." It was all that mattered. He was there. He said what all of us have to have told to us in dark times: "It is never as bad as it seems. You're much stronger than you think you are."
Finally would be "Kingdom Come": Superman has lost faith. He lives in a special area of the Fortress of Solitude farming. It has been 10 - 20 years since Superman walked away. The world is Chaos. There are so many superpowered people, but most of the Elders have left or staked specific claims on protective zones they control. It is a very, very good book - 4 segment comic. What Clark has to learn is not so much of how powerful he is, but what a powerful example he is. To Everyone willing to try to make things better for the sake of others.
Again and again, the best stories about Superman are the ones where he is the example we should aim for. Not with powers, but with the Best Parts of being Human can be. He learned theses traits from his human parents. He passes them on... To Everyone.

This idea of an almost all-powerful character who has to deal with the ordinary problems of an average (or below average) human is just fascinating to me. And maybe I'm moving into head-cannon territory (since the character has been written in different ways over the years), the way I've always seen it is that Clark and Superman are both real; neither one is a mask--they are two halves of the same man.

I’m so happy other people are having the same revelation as me! I also only cared for Superman as a pop culture icon without REALLY knowing who he is as a character. That was until I watched My Adventures with Superman , and now I’m reading the exact same comic run (Marilyn Moonlight caught my attention). It’s great to see this show turning tides and reminding people why we love Superman; hopefully James Gunn’s Superman has the same impact.

I think my favourite example of Superman being a deep character would come in the Climax of Superman vs the Elite. That entire movie judged his moral code believing that his way wouldn’t work in a *modern* world, so he decides to show them what a no morality Superman would be like. Seeing the Elite members be slowly picked off as the world watches on in fear of their Symbol of Hope become an unstoppable force of destruction, he showed the World what he could do unhinged without truly crossing the line (thanks to Cloaking technology).
He will always be there to help the people of Metropolis, and the World, cause the people need a beacon of hope and goodwill to inspire them, along with his dream of a better tomorrow (Man of Tomorrow).

Injustice was NOWHERE NEAR the start of the Evil Superman stories. Take a look at The Animated Series episodes "Brave New Metropolis" and "Legacy" for example (one of the best versions in my opinion) and no more an outlier than your "no more" sample from Superman and Lois, or the Justice League episode "A Better World" (another fine example, and technically later in the same universe as the previous mention). Even Lois and Clark: The Adventures of Superman had their own version, albeit a clone. Of course, you showed the Superman III version that was even earlier, and there are nearly countless iterations throughout the comics.

4:49 Honestly, even that argument falls flat when you remember that we've got much better nuanced approaches to instances where he wouldn't totally snap, decades earlier.
The STAS episode "Brave New Metropolis" explores a reality where Lois died and Superman teamed up with Luthor to become a brutal enforcer. Prime Lois talks him out of it and he works on repairing his mistakes.
Or if I'm gonna give the most obvious story which handled this well, Kingdom Come. Joker killed Lois and Magog killed Joker. One thing led to another and Kansas got destroyed. Clark went into hiding until Diana called him out of retirement. It was difficult, but he OVERCAME his grief. He's still hurt and broken. But he still puts on the tights to help those in need. It's funny how Kingdome Come Diana helped him through his grief while Injustice Diana just enabled all of his worst tendencies.

the thing of Superman being more "Human" is kind of dumb cuz reasons why Humans aren't as pure is cuz of Survival.
Superman is indestructible he can save an old ladies cat without worrying of being late for work or falling off the tree and have thousands in debt for a stubbed toe. Reason we have Wars and fight is cuz of SURVIVAL to defend one's home or ppl. Superman can be reckless and save whoever bc there's no worry. And before some nitwit says it.
No. Kryptonite doesn't even affect Superman even more, he legit fought a Kryptonite enhanced Doomsday h2h and still won and Now man has Electric powers all of a sudden from WHO knows where but y'all eat that up.
There's a reason Spider-Man and Batman are top sellers bc everytime they go out there they might not come back, they have COURAGE and THAT'S what's inspiring THAT'S a FAR more human character bc even though they're bones crack and blood stains the streets they'll keep fighting to protect the innocent to protect the weak. There's a reason Death of Superman is SO popular it's cuz it embodies the philosophy of heroism that even against death you carry on.
If you love Superman all love❤️ to you but I just can't Idk why but just not for me chief

Vanilla Superman is the least interesting version in my opinion. There's no emotional weight to the character and no sense of urgency. Evil Superman, parent/mentor Superman, and antihero Superman are all more compelling takes on the character.

Such a shit take. Superman is not a character that necessitates being morally corrupted or conflicted. He acts as a beacon of virtue and kindness against a backdrop of anti heroes and modern edgy characters. To turn him into one is to dismantle everything he represents. This take is held only by people who don’t know shit about Superman. The only good evil Superman stories were in the 50s when they were played for comedy.

@@hasthehighground8560 How can Superman act as a beacon of virtue and kindness when he has nothing at stake? It's easy to take a bullet for someone when you are bulletproof, that doesn't make you virtuous. It's easy to help 10 people in 10 minutes when you can see everyone, hear everyone, and travel to anywhere on the planet in 1 second flat. Doesn't make you kind or selfless, just means you have an abundance of free time.

@@Aldridge517 because he’s a superhero and therefore not real. He’s fictional, he’s supposed to be an aspiration and taking such a narrow minded and literal approach to fiction is so ridiculous. “He has superpowers so why should he be a beacon of hope?” Maybe it’s because every superhero possesses attributes and abilities beyond that of humans? Superman is meant to be a figure we strive to be like, we can’t be like him, but his values of sincerity, decency, and respect are ones that could be easily applicable to the real world.
The superpowers are there to be entertaining to the reader. They don’t define him as a character because his greatest strength is the compassion he has for others.
The fact that Superman can take bullets for people and does so makes him virtuous, lmao. What kind of bullshit argument is that? Superman could very easily become a tyrant and use his powers to conquer but doesn’t because that’s not who he is, that’s not who Ma and Pa raised him to be and he has a moral obligation not to.
The fact that Superman goes out of his way to help everyone makes him selfless. Just because he can help people efficiently doesn’t make him not selfless. Like, that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.
Superman literally has everything at stake. He has the safety of human civilization to worry about.

@@hasthehighground8560 You know why Jesus works as a beacon of virtue and kindness? Because Jesus is human. He doesn't have diamond skin, superhuman speed, strength, intelligence, and the ability to survive on sunlight. Vanilla Superman doesn't work as a beacon for humanity because he's walking through life on easy mode. It's easy to be sincere, decent, respectful, and compassionate when you are a god among insects. To steal an analogy from Invincible; The human race are like pets to Superman. He's our caregiver, not our equal.
Superman's mission statement is to help humanity at his leisure. That means if Darkseid attacks tomorrow and kills a million people, Superman's goals are unaffected as long as the next day he can hold the door open for someone at the Daily Planet. There's no sense of urgency or progress. As long as a fraction of the human race survives, Superman can continue to be of service. That's a boring objective.
By contrast, Evil Superman's goal is conquest. That's an attainable goal with a definitive ending and progress that can be quantified. Parent/mentor Superman's goal is to raise a protege, this adds emotional weight to the character that Vanilla Superman does not have. Antihero Superman's goals are selfish and therefore relatable to readers. Maybe he wants vengeance, maybe he wants to protect a specific person for selfish reasons, maybe he wants to join the Green Lantern Corp because he likes the rings. All of these goals are more compelling than, "I want to save lives when I'm not going on dates with Lois Lane and reporting on the news."
