  • The Right to Roam is one of the best things about Scotland - but how did it come about?
In this video we look at the historic traditions behind the Right to Roam, and ponder what more it could be.

That word freedom comes alive when its applied to unshackled access to the land - that's where, and when, you get the FEELING of being free

Down in Yorkshire we have no rights 🤣🤣. Ruled by London. Would rather be part of Scotland or an independent kingdom of Yorkshire so we could roam too!

Yeah I feel you. What I would say is that we have more power to alter things than we might think. Organising at a local level, if you do not already, is a great way to build momentum to make change happen.

Well researched and brilliantly presented 👍 I reckon a lot of Scotland's modern day problems could be solved if the ridiculous state land ownership was tackled. Maybe one day we'll have enough politicians with a spine, and the interests of the people will come before the interests of the wealthy landowners.

Thank you for sharing this important information about your lovely country, Scotland. I felt so bad when Trump came over there, promised the Scottish people things, then went behind their backs with his bad schemes and lies. As an American, it hurt me to the core. I hope he does not own any land there. Your history sharing is important to know. Thank you

Well said Harry. Back in 2003 I spent time with many in the NTS discussing access for many places inc. St Kilda (we were obliged to review). It was an interesting debate and many conservationists and archaeologists etc. were uneasy with the idea. For St K the agreement was for open access with a brief to monitor for irresponsibility before considering the old bylaws once again. Not been tested negatively to this day. Through interpretation, understanding; through understanding, appreciation; through appreciation, protection. Freeman Tilden.

fantastic video. i was on a q&a panel of a right to roam documentary screening recently down in Sussex, and I brought up a similar point to yourself; what are we doing arguing over semantics of what constitutes movement and outdoor recreation (see dartmoor) when so much of it is ecologically defunct?
we need to be pressing the issues of land usage, whether that be ecological stewardship, subsistence farming, access to resources, or simply space to organise community/social efforts.
when you look at the history of land exploitation in Britain, its not just the access that was lost, but the usage, and therefore a more interconnected way of life with one's immediate surroundings and resources, and an inherent desire to care for its wellbeing. to simply fight for the access for recreation has always seemed so inherently middle class, and its hard to communicate these concerns while campaigning being a working class woman from SE England 😅

We live in the countryside in a cottage, we don't have loads of land but regardless, naturally we like to explore our surroundings. We sometimes encounter this neighbour who owns hundreds of acres, once or twice a year we might encounter them on their path by the river Doon, its always a bit awkward, they clearly don't like us being there and they sometimes mention it's private. I never know what to say, i kind of understand why they are protective and defensive. But obviously we are being respectful and just passing through and its not like its their back garden, its probably a mile from their house, additionally, they own all this land on a greenbelt surrounding a town of 50k people, youd think they would be accepting of the fact that many of those people are not so fortunate to own hundreds of acres and might want to get out. Anyway i would appreciate any thoughts on this, should i say something? I don't want to be cheeky but sometimes people could do with being more informed

I live down near the depths of hell (London), and would give almost anything to be nearer to Scotland. My Gran is from Ballater and I just love it up there. If there was a right to roam where I live the countryside would look like a rubbish tip!

Hey, been a while since this was uploaded but am very curious as to how and where you went about researching and piecing together all this information? I am interested in this topic myself as an Englishman and have been trying to get a better grasp of the issue and have found it quite difficult to know where to look / what to do, I am very curious.

One of the worst policies ever, the starting spark to ultimately allow homeless people and refugees to be housed in Suburban gardens. Imagine the terror knowing people could walk around outside your home, or you couldn't go for a walk at night on your small acre countryside property without encountering a drug rave

You do not have the right to use roam. You have the right to responsible access. If you are going spread the message then at least be accurate

Right to private property should be implemented on privately owned land. People now just tell you to eff off if you ask their intentions when you find someone on your land, lighting fires camping walking dogs in fields with animals etc.
