@@englishwoodsman I have a British Army Gore-Tex one. Does the same thing, but a little heavier. The Alpkit hooped one is a side entry job. So much easier for entry and exit.👍🏾
A tarp and a bivvy is the ideal combo for me ... lightweight, and optional rain cover if the weather's grim. But there is a lot to be said for bivvys with a midge net. Also stops snakes coming in, for warmth, not that that's much of a problem in the UK
Been really enjoying the videos. I have just bought the Salamander. I already own the Oex Phoxx 1V2 but it can be a pain pitching inner first especially when it's raining. The reason I went with the Salamander is it will come in handy when I am out shooting Astro. As it's quick to pitch and will give me somewhere to chill out while the camera is doing its thing.
You have cast me a fortune lately me and my lad needed new sleeping bags checked your review on oex ones and bought 2. Checked your review on oex rucksack and yes just ordered 1. Great channel bud.
First off, loving the new intro! I just did my first sleep in a normal bivvy last night. Not sue I slept that well but maybe that was the excitement of star gazing. All in all I enjoyed it though and would definitely do it again soon. No condensation issues at all.
Thanks for the video, Dan. Good job. I can't see the point in the Salamander, I'd sooner go with the Phoxx, because it's leaning more towards a coffin tent anyway.
spot on mate - just bought one, and hopefully up some mountains with it. For one night even if it is sweaty i'll be fine. Beats faffing up 4000 ft in a hoolie, and low profile for winds. Great channel mate, and always very very deatiled reviews. thanks again and ATB
You don’t need a tarp for hooped bivi but you do for the bag. I only paid £84 for my Salamanda, I too struggled to get hooped pole in position. Did a back garden wild camp in mine last weekend, first bit of OEX kit I’ve purchased.!
Must admit I got both and love them wen im using my down bag i put it in the bivi In side the hoped bivi just incase it gets condensation, lucky no condensation yet
im not really into bivvy bags but i did find this an interesting vid dan . i think i would go more for the normal bivvy bag .rather than a hooped bivvy . if i was going to the hassle of putting poles in the bivvy bag you might as well get a one man tent ? thats just my opinion ? like you dan i think the other style has more uses ?
Glad I watched this before making the purchase. OEX were sly in the promo photos. These bags are on ebay for about £35 atm from blacks. The pictures and description make it sound as if u don't even need a sleeping bag inside it
A nice concise video and good to hear your view on the pros and cons. My feelings would come down on the bivy bag rather than the hooped. That's more because I would probably have a tarp over the hooped anyway, as if it is going to rain you are likely to get yourself and your kit wet getting in and out of the hooped. And in that case you may as well go for the tarp plus the lightest sleeping system option (i.e. the bivy bag). Keep up the videos and keep well.
For a bivvi bag, the British Army issue goretex one is far better, and cheaper (got mine for about £30 on eBay). It's also twice as waterproof (10,000mm HH) and breathable.
i agree.. they r great, in a worst weather u feel protected. but they are a bit heavy and bulky for long hikes,so i was looking for lighter and smaller alternatives . but they can cost a fortune, so i m not sure if it's worth it, since expensive doesnt always mean quality. bush pro bivi could be an option but again i have doubts about quality ..
Thanks for doing this video Dan. I find I get condensation in my Bivvi bag, regardless wether my head has been in or not. Mine's the Alpkit Bivvi but it looks almost identical to the OEX? So, I was thinking of getting the OEX hooped Bivvi, hoping there would be not only a bit more room, which there is, but with the vents I was hoping for little or no condensation. Looks like I'm going to get condensation either way. When you have the hooped bivvi door open a bit, do you still get condensation? Thanks Dan. Paul
I think you could still hide well with the hooped one by throwing a camo net over it. I like the simple bivvi bags myself, but would take the hooped one if the was a lot of midges about. Regards JB.
Packs down to half the size if you take to pole out and put in your kit bag separate mate. Try it, you may prefer the Salamanda then 🙈 Good vid though. All the best👍
Just bought the hooped bivvy today, already got the OEX survival bivvy, looking forward to giving the hooped one a go. Is there room in the hooped bivvy to put your pack in to? To keep everything out of the open? Subbed buddy, nice content
good vid... oh and try to ignore the numpties if you can(salford lad). takin note of those can ruin a good day.. I should know, spent the best part of the afternoon wound up because some moron opened thier mouth before engaging their brain... I should of ignored it but ended up winding myself up instead.. idiot that I am.. if only I took my own advice seriously?.. apart from that rant, your eight minutes gave me some respite from myself.. thanks..
Call me stupid but apart from the front mesh near your head is there any other mesh area on the hooped bivy. If not when you close it up for the night you are going to produce tons of condensation
Eddy Wiggins Hi Eddy. Have a look on the Millets WWW site for a list of their shops (also Blacks). I think at some point they were taken over but have kept going. Blacks used to be their more “top end” shop but I think they may now run the same ranges.
Still relevant in 2024 - I'm looking at this same choice, great stuff.
Hi Dan.
Great review.
I’ve recently purchased the Alpkit Elan.
Great bit of kit,
Give it a go.

Hi mate the bivvi without the pole it's brilliant

I think I'd be the same and go for a bivvy, the hooped bivvy is so close to a tent! I think a bivvy bag and tarp just give you a lot more options 👍
Hi mate thankyou for watching and taking the time to comment
Bit silly of it really, all you need is a place to put that pole in a "normal" bivvi and some kind flap, done.
Definitely the hooped bivvy for me 💯good to see you dan
Thanks for this vid really helped just bought the oex salamanca after watching this 👍
Alright mate, new to the channel, love this comparison, and the review of the hoop bivvy, just one question, why is all your kit OEX ??
It was back then mate but no more , I like oex because go outdoors is only 5 minutes away

I happen to like OEX camping gear I wood like to get some but t don't think I can get it I've tried to

Enjoyed the vid. What happens on a really, really wet night? I mean serious rain. Presumably the bivvy needs a tarp over it. Is this right?

Hey, thanks for the video, what's the bivi with the pole like in the rain? Is it fully water proof
Hi mate the bivi is great it's waterproof

The Salamander is my preferred choice because I hate bugs and like looking at the sky through a mosquito net. And I feel more secure in the salamander
Great video mate I just got the oex bush pro I let you no how I get on with it... ady
I really like it it's very nice
Is the salamander any good

Another well presented vid👍

Yes at the foot end as explained 😃
Des Rynne it is possible to fasten down entrance flap without zipping up, therefore allowing adequate airflow to prevent condensation .
Are OEX a Mountain Warehouse range or Go Outdoors?
They started off as a Go Outdoors line but I have seen that other retailers are now selling them (Millets seem too have a few of the tents)
Eddy Wiggins Blacks are now selling OEX kit.
