- Ruth Ellis was the last women to be hanged in England after murdering her lover. She lies in an unmarked grave after her son destroyed the headstone before killing himself. Lou Lewis - a film armourer - decided it was time she had a new headstone so visited the grave and laid a new one in Ruth Ellis's memory. A poignant video dedicated to the last women hanged in England. Footage by Liam Galvin

What a beautiful soul to do that for Ruth
Really lovely thing to do...but very sad to hear of the deaths of her children...had to smile when he said he didn’t believe in God, but then said “God bless you Ruth” several times....I think God will have heard....bless YOU. For doing such a thoughtful, caring gesture. And yes...PLEASE visit her grave, takes flowers or whatever you wish, but take nothing away,,,leave her stone in place...Thankyou, ❤️❤️❤️👏🏻
Bless this man 🙏🏼 very kind and thoughtful. Everyone deserves a head stone! ❤️
At first I thought it was the one to the left.

@@chrishayes5790 I don't think about that evil sod she should rot in hell.
Someone is buried behind my mother,s headstone they don't have one which is sad.
Correct, even psycho murderesses.
What a kind hearted gentleman.
Im a Funeral Director, been in trade for 21 yrs, its rare you meet people like this man, its refreshing to hear about positiveness nowadays may God Bless this Man, his family and Ruth Ellis, I hope she is having a safe and peaceful journey.
The relatives of Ellis' victim probably never got your "safe and peaceful journey" for the rest of their lives.
@oriel229 Pity those same relatives didn't know what a toe rag Blakeley was..
bless you Matt!!!xxx
But where are her children buried?
Fair play, full respect to this fella
What ever your believes, either way, what this fella has done was a good thing to do.. Your Mum obviously taught you good values. I hope nobody does try and steal it. Nice little film to watch.. Cheers
She was treated so unfairly.. Poor Ruth, and her childeren. her whole life snuffed out before her time.. She was never given a chance, no thoughts or compassion for her children..
.
Her sister wrote a book about her life. Apparently, the judge at the trial, Lord Havers, paid for her son's education.
@@doravernon1511 Nigel Havers Dad, I believe!
@@anthonytaylor9232 of course; you should read Ruth's sister's book it will give you a different slant on the story
@@anthonytaylor9232 Actually he was his grandfather.
That is really really lovely & very touching. Bless this man's kindness 💙💜✨
Hope this fella finds out how much he is appreciated for doing this for Ruth. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
What a lovely chap, and yes, I reckon his Mum would definitely have been very proud of him 👍 Thanks for sharing
That is incredibly touching.
No winners here, her Son was messed up her daughter died of cancer.
What a scar on her mum and her sister too.
What a decent gentleman and beautiful tribute to Ruth Ellis ❤ ♥
On a newer video, someone has stolen this headstone

Rest in Peace Ruth, David and all those involved in this tragic unfolding of events.
Strange but I remember my dear Mom talking about Ruth Ellis, I am 79....R.I.P Ruth and thank you young man for putting a stone on her grave...
A very Sad Story. But what a Great Chapter Respect to that Man
loved the way he talked to her at the end.......
Thankyou mate. What an absolute decent bloke.
What a generous thoughtful act ! It goes to show that there are truly good hearted people still on this planet!
What a lovely man to do this for Ruth god bless him
I visited Ruth's grave many years ago .Her sons ashes are also in the grave. Ruth was moved to AMERSHAM OLD TOWN when the burial site at Holloway prison was demolished..The grave of the man she murdered DAVID BLAKLEY is in PENN churchyard not too far from AMERSHAM .May all concerned in this tragic story RIP
This is so kind of this gentleman, its called compassion, this world needs more of this , so thank you sir for showing this world there are still kind people who really care . Godbless you ,, RIP and love Ruth 🙏🏻💕
Liam god love you what a very kind man you are. I personally thank you for the kindness you have shown Ruth hope she is watching over you. I believe she is so emotional God bless you Liam
R I P Ruth Ellis ❤️
Wonderful human being and thank you
I remember those times so well. Even then,it was a great injustice. She had such a sad and abusive life. RIP Ruth. Your " Earthly Caretaker" is a wonderful man..!
I visited her grave this year, then walked to Penn and visited David's grave, then walked back to Ruth's grave on my way to the railway station and put some yellow carnations there. There is no headstone there anymore. But maybe it's not needed - this video and many of the comments here are beautiful memorials to a once troubled soul who I hope has now grown in wisdom and found peace.
She was buried in an unmarked grave on the grounds at Holloway Prison for Women. In 1971, while the prison was being remodeled, she was exhumed, and buried at St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, and had "Ruth Hornby 1926-1955" on her headstone until it was destroyed in 1982 by her son.
What a thoughtful person you are. It's a beautiful headstone
What a really lovely caring man.
A pity there's not more like him in this world.
Rip Ruth Ellis ne Hornby...❤
What a kind gesture to make sure she's not forgotten.
Amazing man thank you
Unfortunately the stone was stolen quite a few months ago. I left some yellow roses there yesterday.
A cross put in the ground would be better, with some postcrete
A crime of passion. A woman driven to self destruction by the cruelty and infidelity of the man she loved. RIP Ruth Ellis.
@Bad Lieutenant exactly. They'd soon be doing a documentary on BBC
Well done Liam, I have visited that spot a few times myself. I believe she had a sister.
Cheers Joe

What a gentleman and such a lovely man.Very kind thing do.I think it is marvellous of this gentleman.God bless you Ruth never forgotten 🙏 ❤
What a thoroughly decent chap. A nice video. Thanks
Ruth has had quite a few headstones over the years but they’ve either been stolen by trophy hunters as sadistic as that sounds it’s quite true or they have been removed by unknown people why I don’t know but if you google it you will see that she has had quite a few over the years
Bless you for doing this👏👏💕🙏
What a wonderful gesture. Thankyou very much for reminding us that human beings are not all bad, only the ones who torment us! RIP Ruth.
Her defence during her trial was woefully inadequte.
Her legal team messed up by failing to persuade the Judge that the case could be tried on the grounds of murder under the grounds of provocation - she would still have been found guilty - but that would probably have enabled the jury to plea for mercy.
This would have given grounds for the Home Secretary to commute her sentence to a custodial one.
Sadly, Ruth's demeanour during the trial didn't help her cause either.
The terrible physical & mental abuse she recevied from Blakely wasn't really offerred in evidence as the provocation that she suffered, which caused her to act in the extreme manner she did.
Hers was a tragic life during which she was mistreated by all the principle men in her life - her father, her husband & her lover. Terribly sad.
She shot a man on cold blood with the intention of killing him under the pretense he was having an affair, which he wasn't.
She very openly admitted to murder, yes she was a victim of domestic abuse however that doesn't negate what she did.
Terrible story all the same and lives lost
You baffoon .
No defence could have saved Ruth. When her defence counsel found out that Desmond Cussens (a different lover) had bought her the gun, taught her to use it, and driven her to Blakely's flat to murder him, the Home Secretary - Gwilym Lloyd George - said that just made her more guilty, since it showed the act was premeditated. Executing Ruth Ellis was highly convenient to the government of the day, who were looking for an unpopular execution which would help make it easier to discontinue capital punishment.
@@chrisoneill3999 Well there we go , little miss innocent got all the simps trying to defend here , it's beyond me why so many men put women on such a high pedestal , it's an insult to them , it makes them look unequal in my book having to patronise and mollicoddle them and treat them like babies as good as saying they've had a raw deal in life because they've been born a female , she was a good time girl and had a face like a stab can tin opener . R.I.P. David Blakely .
@@MikeHunt45 What about the jealous man who drove her to the pub and gave her the gun giving her the means to commit the crime he wasn’t even charged as an accessary to murder. He was just as bad if not worse if he hadn’t gave her the means she couldn’t have done it. He could have warned Blakely he could have gone to the police . He didn’t because he wanted Blakely out of the picture.
Have only just seen this, but what a lovely gesture, and film. A fitting tribute to Ruth Rip🙏..............
..
What a great thing to do. Well done fella 😊👍
Well done Sir you did something special where no one else did.
Respect
A lovely gesture to do.Aged 5, I was on my first holiday with my mum and older brother and friends in a caravan at East Runton , Norfolk in July 1955 when even at this tender age I recall so well every adult talking about Ruth , definitely the first major news story I recall.I too have been fascinated by her story ever since.A few years earlier in 1951 of course it was Derek Bentley , another tragic consequence of the death penalty judged by the ' standards ' of the time .
I lived in Amersham Ruth had a sister also living in Amersham. Ruth's sister would take people around the graveyard telling them about Ruth and what happened not sure if Ruth's sister is still alive now I moved some time ago. Amersham is a beautiful village well worth a visit.
The family are still alive I'm friends with Ruth's great nephew.
That's so nice to hear the family is still near. Ruth should never have been sentenced to death bless her. When they realised what a grave mistake they had committed in killing Ruth they abolished hanging saving others from death who didn't deserve it. In death, Ruth changed how women were seen in courts after committing a crime of passion. She's a pioneer and brave soul.
Ruth’s sister Muriel has passed away.
Love this. Nice man xxx
What a wonderful thing to do. Such a tragic life and story. Thank you for doing that and I'm sure Ruth would also say thank you.
Well done Sir. You have a good heart 🤗
Bless your golden heart for doing that, all that is needed now, is for another golden heart to come & really set that beautiful stone in cement!....anyone out there willing??
Thank you so much for sharing this

going to watch the movie! what a lovely thing to do putting a headstone there. thank you sir
A lovely story, a lovely gesture and a very interesting piece of history.
The stone is gone visited today so sadly either stolen or possibly removed by the church by request of the family.
People will help themselves to anything in cemeteries, flowers ,mementoes, anything, they're not quite normal in the head if you ask me
many thanks for laying the stone.
thank you so much Liam Galvin for putting this on the tube what sad end she had her son Desta grated his mum's grave and her daughter died of cancer a terrible indictment that bestowed upon her in life.
Thanks Kenneth - it's my good friend Lou's idea and I was happy to film him - all the best to you
Off to look up "Dance with a Stranger" as I only have a rough idea who Ruth Ellis was. Thank you Lou for what you have done.x
I spent a lot of time at the Magdala in Hampstead which is in a really nice part of North London and you can read about Ruth in the Pub where there is a brief history dedicated to her 0n the wall . the shooting took place just outside the pub where Ruth shot her lover and she was arrested and taken to Hampstead Police station just around the corner from the Pub
There is also a Funfair close by on Hampstead Heath which is open at Easter as I write this is Easter 2022 today is the 15th April and it is a beautiful morning, strangely enough the last two Woman to be executed in England both lived in the same street so I am told the other woman was a Greek Cypriot, Lovely video and very informative!
@Liam Galvin. What a lovely kind human being,God bless you mate, may God keep you in good health.
Thank you sir. God bless Ruth and her family. God bless you to Sir. I'm sure that you have done many a good deed in your life.
I'm really touched by this video. I plan to visit Ruth's grave at some point. Beautiful woman and was a great shame what happened. My nan often spoke of her. Great video and amazing gesture sir. Have a great day!👍🙏🙏
It’s always mentioned that Ruth’s son Andre damaged the stone, I’ve not seen, I’ve never researched that far to find evidence. I’ve also read that her stone was removed a few years after her burial.
Nice one 👍.
Very kind gesture mate, very respectful.
Lovely touch my friend.
Well done mate for taking the time and effort to do such a thing.
@Liam Galvin Well done you. That was a very kind gesture.

Well done, Liam. That is a lovely thing to do. Your mum would be proud of you. Nice shirt by the way 👍 ☘
My girlfriend and myself went there yesterday. Unfortunately there’s no sign of the headstone.
We live in Amersham and hoping to rise some money to replace that headstone.
We found a few graves of polish people which they came after Second World War to Amersham.
Such sad story.
Unfortunately the headstone was stolen or removed shortly after this filming - all the best
@@LiamGalvinFilm thank you
@@LiamGalvinFilm sadly, human nature being what it is, it is best not to publicise something like this.
Well done for doing this. I taught law for many years and when explaining the subtleties between murder and manslaughter I'd often refer to the Ruth Ellis case. She was most likely suffering from Post natal depression. She shot him twice, the second was " to make sure". At trial she said " I shot him and I intended to kill him" (I'm paraphrasing). Today she'd use the defence of Diminished Responsibility or Loss of Control. These are special and partial defences to murder which reduce the charge to voluntary manslaughter. This is a less blameworthy state of mind, and takes in to account the level of personal responsibility and therefore culpability of the individual. In those days PND was not recognised as an mental illness. Sad indictment on the idea of justice back then.
What a kind gesture! God Bless this gentleman
Just viewed your Ruth Ellis video which I enjoyed. You mentioned that she has no surviving family. She died some years ago, but her sister, Muriel Jakubait, long fought for a Pardon for Ruth. She lived in Woking and I often chatted to her as a customer of the bank where I was employed. I do not know if there are any relatives on that side of the family. You may know more as a result of your researches.
poor poor woman. one of the best examples of the death penalty going badly wrong
Lovely guy and gesture. Well done sir. I’ve learnt since though that this headstone has indeed been taken. Which is disgraceful really.
What a beautiful gesture, thank you 💕
Well done fella...total respect God bless you....
Well done fella 👏 That was a miscarriage of justice she should have never been hanged or convicted of murder. Bless her 🙏
There was little doubt about the murder conviction. There was plenty of evidence and witnesses to the act and she stated herself under oath she intended to kill him. She didn’t meet him by chance she sought him out and had armed herself. Shooting five bullets into him with some at very close range could only really have one outcome.
The problem was the law. There are no degrees of murder, under English law there was only one sentence and she actively resisted all attempts to get a reprieve as she wanted to die.
@@ericadams3428 She may have had a reasonable defence of insanity.
@@jamestuck6764 totally agree with you!!!!

I live very close by and when I want to relax and chill out I sit on a bench no more than 30 yards away from that plot. I heard rumours she was there ,but got told her remains were removed ,I think it’s because her headstones vanished and people assumed she was no longer buried there.I simply had no idea I sat so close to that plot .
