This game was massive for me when I was a teenager. Thank you for everything MM.

We waited for Soldat 2 for over a decade now. Didn't expect this to actually happen.
For some of us this is just as big as HL3 would be.
I would love to hear more stories about Soldat and your gamemaking career! Soldat was such a huge part of my childhood. I had two computers in my room and spent my days playing Soldat with my friend. Two guys with miniguns versus 30 Boogey Man bots. :D It was mayhem. And the mayhem got even worse when we started modding the guns and tweaking the config files. Those were the days! Huge thanks to you MM and good luck making Soldat 2! I will definetely play it. :D

It is great that I can check the source code of the game I used to play when I was young.
Technically it's not the same bc of a lot of updates & changes that happened meanwhile, but I feel ya.
Actually, the 1.8 version, of which the source code is released, isn't even the same as 1.7.1.1 that is played on currently. There are changes & refactoring in between + they don't wanna have malicious hackers read the code of the actual one for obvious reasons.
At least until some anti-hack functions are implemented.

Liero and Soldat are one of my biggest inspiration to make my own game finally! I had totally forgotten Elasto Mania.. what an nostalgia trip when I saw it!

I put many hours into this game. Even registered for the cool jet colors! I was thinking about going back to it and searched it today. Pretty neat you just posted this a couple weeks ago.

Ah, it was the first MP game I played religiously. I would always run my own realistic DM server, always on Rok. Also played on Leo's servers. Made many internet friends over that time. Good times.

I can't believe this is happening, I used to play soldat in 2006-2008 and every once in a while I was checking for updates, now Soldat Open Source and Soldat 2 coming...thank you so much, I love your games!!

I haven't touched this game in like 15 years but it reminded me of childhood memories. I have no idea how I had found out about it because I didn't have internet until 2006. My only guess is that one of the video game magazines like GameStar included it on one of their covermount CDs/DVDs. Cheers from Hungary - I'm close to certain a lot of people (who are now in their late 20s and 30s) played Soldat here.
Tell me please.. why new SOLDAT 2 - is so expensive.. i loved Soldat "1" - i was very good in it.. there were many of players.. now i checked "steam charts" - Soldat "1" - still someone is playing.. / Soldat "2" - 0 players. Making this game was great idea!.. I wan't to come back to the game.. where i feel Pro.. BUT NOT FOR $$$... i'm sure.. Dev will get much more $$$$ - but like in "your" game .. DO SOME "SKINS" FOR $ .. any other things.. Cosmetic / supporting etc. I'm really disappointed.. like alot of Soldat oldschool.. players. .. Still in "beta" .. but i'm sure even if you make this Soldat2 F2P - Nobody will came. Good BYE SOLDAT - The best 2d multiplayer FPS!
I'm playing Soldat from the beginning almost every day. Soldat can become to game industry something what is CS:GO now if Soldat will go in the right direction. First of all, SniperLine is not cheating, SniperLine must be in this particular game unremovable. Without SniperLine Soldat is losing 90 percent of its possible drive. SniperLine must be available for everyone who got the eys and brain. Second: Sniper Line and Crosshair must be modifiable in Paintbrush in every possible way. I tried to modify Crosshair in Paintbrush in the way I needed to but I failed. Third: Each (!) Weapon in the game should have a zoom mode when the camera approaches the crosshair. The same zoom is available in all 3D first-person shooters using the right mouse button. Exactly the same zoom should be in the Soldat for each weapon, and not just for the sniper. Soldat is a very perspective game.
This game was fun times. I remember in the late 2000s, when this game was already considered old, I dug it up when I got a laptop from school because it was a great game to just drop into for a quick bit of fun between classes (another was Diablo 1). I realized I could do a bunch of tinkering by replacing sprites, sounds, and then altering the values for weapons.
I redrew the M72 LAW into a WH40k Lascannon, made its shot a bright orange streak, and gave it a magazine of 30 rounds. In no way a balanced weapon by any means, but it was fun, and I began redoing all the other weapons as well.
Kurcze ta giera to spory kawał dzieciństwa. Na świetlicy środowiskowej wszyscy grali, a mi w domu się upodobały mapy climb. Bylem juz potem dosc kozakiem w te climby i ludzie mnie rozpoznawali xd Nawet nieświadomie zacząłem wtedy pewien trend - nie wiedziałem, że serwery można pofiltrować po nazwach map, i znaleźć łatwo te serwery z mapami climb żeby na nich pograć. Kiedyś przypadkiem trafiłem na taki, była mapa z kolcami od typa który sie chyba nazywał SSonsuka czy jakoś tak, i trzeba było to przeskakiwać. Coś innego kurcze od zwykłego strzelania sie, istny platformer cholibka, no i mapa sie przewineła i juz jej nie bylo a ja chcialem znowu na niej poskakac. No to wchodzilem na losowe serwery gdzie nikogo nie bylo i sobie głosowałem na te mape zeby w nia zagrac, tez nie wiedzialem ze na singlu moge sobie ja wlaczyc. No ale czas minial, mapa sie znowu przewijała, no to zmienialem serwer czy coś no i tak sie to toczyło, duzo razy tak robilem bo chcialem przejsc te mape, a jeszcze wtedy skakałem tylko na w, nie wiedziałem o tych dzikich backflipach, do tego caly czas ktos wbijał na serwer i mi przeszkadzał. No i normalnie z czasem, zaczely sie pojawiac serwery na ktorych ludzie sie po prostu napierdalali na tej mapie i tylko ta mapa byla na tym serwie. I było ich dość sporo, i dosyć długo się ten trend utrzymywał i miał sporo graczy. Losowo dzisiaj trafiłem na ten film bo byłem ciekawy co sie z tą grą dzieje, pisze to bo polsku bo nie mam sił myśleć, żeby to tłumaczyć na angielski wszystko xD ale ta głupia historyjka o której mało kto wie, i wgl nikt nie rozumie jakie to było potęzne dowartościowanie się kappa, zacząć przypadkiem takie coś dla jakiegoś 9-10 latka. Tak jakoś pomyślałem, ze sie tym tu podziele. Może to ktos poczyta :p
This was my shit for a number of years in the early 2000s. I remember paying a small cost to register, but after a few years, I lost my key or password for my account. I ended up contacting MM without any proof of purchase except for my name, and he let me register again without paying a second time. What a cool game and cool guy. I will proudly buy Soldat 2.0 when it comes out. Thank you Michal
to be fair I used to "mod" this as a kid... I made a crossbow out of the AK by altering the .ini and bitmaps. also minigun with grenades as projectiles was pretty fun :D love this game!

i feel proud for a hungarian game having inspired Soldat :3, i have been playing it since before secondary weapons existed, and was my first online multiplayer life, like most likely for many others. and also partly inspired my own game makings. so thank you for everything, and thank you for still being active, and good lucks with all your endeavors!
