Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls The Real Deal on Layered Surge Protection with James Adams

  • 🏠 Whole House Layered Surge Protectors 🛡️:
    🔌 Type 1 Surge Protectors 🛡️:
These are the little bros in the surge family. They might look alike - a tiny box with a thread 🧵 and some wires - but they're important! They might not be as strong as the whole-house ones, but they're quick ⚡ and might have a lower VPR. James suggests putting these at places like the furnace 🔥, pool 🏊 control, and AC ❄️. Especially since stuff like pools and ACs are outside and more vulnerable.
    💰 Cost vs. Benefit :
While everyone wants a magic solution (and maybe save some cash ), think about the costs of fixing stuff and the pain of damages.
    🖼️ The Big Picture 🌍:
James finishes by saying big surge protectors are like huge doors 🚪 guarding your home, but they're not perfect. There are other ways in, so better safe than sorry. He says to layer your protection, or "chase some waterfalls 🌊." It's about protecting your cool gadgets 📱💻, not just the protector's price.

Thanks for giving surge protection some TLC.

Notable surge path that is currently hard to fix: Cable Internet. The protection device needs to both do the standard surge protection stuff, but it also needs to pass the actual signals which range from 1.5MHz to 3GHz (depending on provider / vendor) and do so with a completely flat passband both into and out of the home. CATV is largely solved, but add that second direction and things get weird in a hurry.

That is a great note - most brands sell an in-line spd for coax and phone. I believe Eaton's Ultra has a warranty based on the communication lines being protected as well.

Something else to consider is surge protection will clamp anywhere from 350v to 1000v. Voltages above those levels usual last very short duration and a lot of electronics have some sort of surge protection build in like MOVs, GTSs or SADs. These will catch those transients if they are not high current events.
Often overlooked is the brownout or over voltage events that happen much more often. For example the a the new variable speed HVAC equipment is very sensitive to over voltage. There are a few particular brands where if the outdoor inverter boards see voltage above ~250v for any amount of time they will be destroyed. A lot of the type of failures are usually contributed to lightning because is coincides with a storm. But in fact what is really happening is damage to the grid during those storms causes fluctuations in the voltage, destroying equipment.
I'm not saying surge protection isn't necessary but it isn't the end-all be-all that a lot of people assume. In addition to the surge protection maybe consider some form of line voltage protection on the high $$$ appliances. ICM493 is a great example of an all in one device that does both.

Thank you. A lot of my peers say SPDs are snake oil.
      I think they have utility.

I go a step further and all electronics including water treatment and dehumidifier get a UPS sized appropriately as well. Just not the HVAC.

Would a QSA2020SPD be a good breaker choice for an internally mounted FS-140?
