- We explore Chesterfield in Derbyshire, which is a town of great character. In this video we take a look around Chesterfield Town Centre from the crooked spire to the open air market and along to the Winding Wheel theatre
Take a day in Chesterfield itself to find out how the 'Crooked Spire' got its twist. Or go bargain hunting on Chesterfield Market every Monday, Friday or Saturday. Get a taste of history at Chesterfield Museum or spend an evening at the Theatre.
Chesterfield has a fabulous offer for businesses, residents and visitors alike. Chesterfield is far more than a historic market town in Derbyshire with an iconic Crooked Spire.
Visit Chesterfield for a great day out or to stay. The town is famous for its 800 year-old open air market and the unique and unusual Crooked Spire Church. A step out of town brings you to the rugged beauty of the Peak District and the allure of Chatsworth.
Come to the Chesterfield Area of Derbyshire where you're sure of a friendly welcome and a wide range of things to do.
Take a short break and explore the area - Chatsworth, Hardwick Hall, Bolsover Castle, Renishaw Hall and Gardens and the Peak District are just a few of the things to see in this part of Derbyshire.
Who knows what you will find at Chesterfield’s open air market, one of the oldest markets in the country. You can pick up pots to potatoes, fabric to flowers, clothes to crafts. Rummage among the stalls on one of the largest Flea Markets in the UK and, who knows, you might discover a priceless antique in disguise!
Don’t miss the Chesterfield Artisan Market on the last Sunday of the month where you can find the finest artisan market traders selling authentic goods with the emphasis on all that is local, ethical and original.
If it’s cold outside, or even if it isn’t, call at Chesterfield Market Hall to find old fashioned sweets at Auntie Dot’s, the Fruit and Nut stall which does just what it says on the tin and lots more. Have coffee and a cake at the Market Café before you leave.
Staying in Chesterfield there’s the St Thomas’ Church at Brampton food market on the first Saturday of the month, where local small businesses come and sell their delicious produce.

I remember many times while in a train seeing the twisty spire roof fly by. I believe I went to the town centre once and marveled on how many Tudor style buildings there were! Thanks again for the chance to take a trip down memory lane :)
You're welcome - thanks for your support as always it means a lot to me!
Wow so beautiful! I live in Chesterfield, South Carolina in the US. It’s neat to see the original Chesterfield.
I didn't know there was a Chesterfield in the States😁
@@ToThePointCT there is more than one
yes im from chesterfield england , you have a few , i checked them out on ggogle maps , some nice towns but the one in illnois my fav , middle nowhere with one bar that looks well gritty , want to go there lol
Born and bred here in Chesterfield. You did justice to my beloved town, although there were many places of interest you didn't cover. Having said that I appreciate you taking time to show the ppl our history. There are other VIPs born in town like ex darts World champ John Lowe and John Hurt who proudly says " I was born within the shadow of the crooked spire" . A great video, well done!
Thanks for walking my home town.Must say I felt proud of the place. The Mock Tudor on Knifesmithgate looked grand. You missed a hidden treasure tho':The Shambles and its medieval pub.The Spire never fails to impress. Thanks again.
A Quiet Market Town, but it has all you need. I moved from Sheffield nearly 50 yrs ago when I first married & have NEVER regretted it.
My home town. Wasn't expecting to see that! 👍🏻
same
Chesterfield my home town. My late Dad was a chorister at The Crooked Spire church. Saint Mary and all Saints. My Great grandparents were married there.. On my mums side of the family. My grandparents on my dad's side were landlord and landlady at the market hotel in Chesterfield and the Rectory then the Crooked Spire public houses in the 1950's and 1960's.
I moved here from London about 8 years ago and have no regrets. There are some beautiful residential areas and pubs in Chesterfield as well as large green spaces, farm animals etc. This was obviously filmed during a quiet spell.
Get real love it’s a shit hole
@@Dave-vs9ff 😂 it's not that bad. Try living in some parts of London, then say that.
@@jude7879 I live in London totally agree with you complete shit hole been trying to move for years but no luck
I moved here 7 months ago from Birmingham. Big change but I love it here. Love the Tudor architecture in the town and the antique markets.
Can I ask what the diversity is like? My partner is Algerian and I’m also looking to move out of london but I don’t want to be somewhere that’s going to make him feel uncomfortable. Have you had any problems
Chesterfield is one of our favourite places to visit, and it's not always so quiet 😁
Never been to chesterfield even though it’s so close to home and thanks to you video I now don’t need too thanks and keep on walking 👍👍🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻♂️
Thank you for this. Really enjoyed it. Born there and emigrated in 1982 to NZ. It certainly has changed. Now living in Melbourne, Australia so probably wont see it again.
I moved from Basildon in Essex to Chesterfield in 1986. No regrets, the train can take you to bigger cities or places if you want a day or two where its livelier. In Chesterfield people are friendly and caring. A great place to live. This was obviously filmed on a non market day. It does get busier. Thursday Market its always packed.
Ye in your bubble it’s great 👍🏼
Nice place. Love that spire.
I love walk videos & watch those a lot. Especially during those lockdown frustrating days! I'm happy to find your channel from today's 'explore' page. Thanks for uploading videos of places I don't / cannot visit now. You've got a fan!
(19h35)
Thank you so much that's made me very happy reading that!
Hope you are safe and well
@@GimbalWalkTV Welcome!
Thanks for the walk down memory lane of the 1970s to mid eighties,i think ill pay chesterfield a visit again very soon
You're welcome - great town
I enjoy all your walks, and this was no exception. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much Don!
Great video we was there last weekend, I lived in Chesterfield from 1980 to 1993 and worked at the abttoir on Hipper Street South for many years ( where Next and the closed Debenhams now stand ) I was very surprised how the town has changed, the former Cooperative building is now a Premier Inn on the top 2 floors, the Wetherspoons at the end of the market was tbe former Portland Hotel which was the original Market Station Hotel with the large Market Station next door ( which is hard to believe a large Station exsited there ) the heavy industry steel fabrication and casting, mines, and huge chemical plants now all long gone, Chesterfield is quiet, not the bustling busy town I remember.
Thank you Dave, you've helped me picture the place. So many different styles/eras of buildings. Glad that the buildings are still being used.
My mum was born & bred here & I think the town is better for there not being the small industrial places there used to be. Now it’s a true Country Market Town. Also, my mum was taught the spire was built with green timber back in the day & as the wood dried it twisted. There’s also a local saying….The first time a Virgin is married in the church then the spire will straighten.😄 I loved the tour, Thanks, “Mi Duck”.
Ye it’s just now stripped away more shit to reveal the actual shit
Hi there, as a local I wonder what day of the week you filmed? It was very quiet but you missed the new shopping area, perhaps everyone was there!
I noticed that the video was over exposed, making it very hard to read the information. I enjoy your little outings and would suggest you visit some of the peak district villages - maybe Castleton or Bakewell? Keep up the good work.
Vicar Lane is the main shopping area that you missed. The Shambles isn't what it once was, but still nice. The Town Hall is quite famous and a smaller version of Stormont.
Be sure to visit Queens Park too.
Great video by the way 👏
I lived in chesterfield 2010 and 2011 i was near at chesterfield musium so i really love this city...and nice video too thanks mate
Our pleasure!
Another great video mate, thank's for some great content.
What was that fella's problem 14:55 you wasn't even filming the dog??
Ah he just wanted to shout at me for some reason
Notice how he says "Can you not film... er... MY DOG! please?'
He was just grumpy and wanting to have some kind of go at me - quite pathetic really but I chuckled as I carried on walking
@@GimbalWalkTV I wonder if Mr Grumpy goes around all the CCTV cameras saying the same thing? 🤣🤣🤣
@@karlos55555 I could tell he just wanted an argument - I didn't give him one I just laughed and carried on walking. People like that aren't worth our time
I'm sure he's a really nice bloke really, but for some reason just had to have his say about me wandering along filming a town
You get people like that occasionally
They're probably not getting enough attention at home
@@GimbalWalkTV Yeah, well done for acting like you did. Folk are strange at times but keep up the good work and don't let them put you off, I'm sure you won't anyway!
@@karlos55555 Definitely not - it helps that I'm 6 foot 2 and built like a Tesco's supermarket too - ha ha
Thanks for the kind words - very much appreciated.
It can be cruel out there on those streets 🤣
Love chesterfield, always have my hometown.
It's a lovely town, with lots to see, it's still a pleasure to go to chesterfield, been going there all my life and I shall carry on for years to come.🥂
Do you know Julia Arundel (maiden name ) ?

No I don't know this lady sorry.
Love that crooked spire aswell, must mention that.
I’ve lived in Chesterfield for almost 30 years and I still think it’s a decent place to live and wouldn’t want to move to where I lived in South Yorkshire for the first 20 years of my life lol 😆. It has good and bad points but if someone is visiting there’s the main town centre, and lots of historical sites around to see , also beautiful countryside around too .
Iv sent this to my friend overseas he coming to chesterfield next year 😊
Thank you so much!
You picked a very quiet day. There's usually lots of hustle and bustle in Chesterfield. Especially market days.
Yeah I missed Market day! Will have to go back and do it again!
A great little town with lots of potential..
Good evening how are you yes Chesterfield's lovely place I like the Christmas market's From Lynn stay Safe 😁
Evening Lynn!
Chesterfield's nice isn't it!
So many historic buildings there that get ignored a lot!
Neil
Visited for the first time in Dec 2023 hoping to return this May for a longer stay
Best thing about Chesterfield is the people. So friendly
I don’t what town your taking about love, but people in Chesterfield are as about as friendly as Christopher Columbus meeting the red indians
@@Dave-vs9ff 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Shame you missed the shambles, The pub in there dates back to The Knights Templar. They still have the Bull ring in the ground and the gutters for slaughtered animals blood and mess to flow down. Great to see my home town again.
EXACTLY
It still dates back from the knights of the Templar, have you not met the people here?
It's such a shame the coop wasn't there for u on this tour .what a fantastic store that used to be .was huge .
Yes it looked like an amazing g building!
I was surprised that you didn’t film the Shambles with a very very old pub and it is allegedly a stopping place for the Knights Templar’s, it just reeks history.
Oh I didn't know that is there - I thought Shambles was York?
Is there one in Chesterfield too?
@@GimbalWalkTV Hi, yes there is one in Chesterfield too, not as big as York’s shambles, only tiny. I really enjoy all of your videos, thank you.
@@GimbalWalkTV The butcher's floor...
If you'd turned left at Peak Pharmacy when you first went into to the market square you'd have seen it.
My dad lived in Chesterfield and died there. I have visited Chesterfield many, many times. Its almost my 2nd home.
I left Chesterfield in 1963 and it has completely changed since then, hardly any of the shops remain, some of the buildings do, I am glad to see that the Vic Ballroom buildings are still there, the town itself seems to be deserted, it used to be so busy where are all the people ?
non market days a bit quiet but weekend and thursday especially busy for flea market
Great vid! I was wondering what camera you're using to film this walk? Thanks!
I believe it was just iPhone, I walked past him at 10.32 in the video and saw the iPhone on a gimbal!
Great vid thanks
❤❤🇬🇧
Pembroke dock would be a good place been there good place to visit
Weird at 14.40 man standing still blocking people's way, looking at the camera like it's a machine gun "can you not film the dog please"!😂 Some people really do need to lighten up. Ken Dodd we need you😂
Can't believe you've done 2 chesterfield videos and didn't go down the shambles where one of Britain's oldest pub is so much history you missed x
I will on the next one :)
Quiet stress free shopping trip? Maybe when covid is keeping people away or during a weekday when the market isn't taking place and everyone is at school or work but definitely not usually as quiet as in the video. That is why I never go into the centre of Chesterfield, too stressful and crowded for my liking. It's so sad seeing Dents all closed and everything :(
I'm local to chesterfield and did carpentry and joinery there and the church is bent because the French joiners who built it didn't second season the timber in the spires joists and as they acclimatized the entire spire twisted into that shape. At least that's what I learnt in college anyway
Another town I not been to for a while,
I've lived in (tarn) Chesterfield all my live and apart from the Thursday flea Market the walk you did sums the place up dead which is a shame as there use to be a great place
Thanks for that, don't need to go now
The 15th century house had a daub and wattle wall. At one time it could been seen through a glass window.
What a great house! Looks fab!!
You forgot to go through the shambles when you was near that horrible man with the dog. There you would have found the royal Oak pub that dates back to the crusades and is the oldest part of town.
Ah I didnt' know about that - I'll definitely film that in the summer when I go back to do a more indepth tour! Thank you so much!
6th May 2022, going over today and take photos INSIDE the church and town
Great stuff - have a top time INSIDE the church!
@@GimbalWalkTV Brilliant inside, the stain glass is glorious and stunning.
@@Pinchton Will have to have a nosey! Thank you Tony!
Do you have plans to go to Middlesbrough?
I do yes - was there recently but couldn't film that day
Ahhh my home town Chesterfield aka Fester-field, actually it's not too bad now, I think most of the mamba zombies and homeless have died.
put them in flats , i still see them walking into town though
who is clog dancing 4 mins in, thermal socks, and big pants, nice carvings, pity market was nt on it looks fairly big one, if you got a scooter , you would have to call it gimbal scooter, not quite the same ring, and don t film the dog please!, eh, way eh fed x, some nice buildings, I reckon the same builders who built that spire, had something to do with a building in Italy. Another good informative walk..
There’s more life in my local cemetery, unfortunately a lot of city centres throughout the Uk have become ghost towns. You have to blame the combination of online shopping and Covid !
It's a Town
Apparently Chesterfield is the happiest place to live in the East Midlands.
@@jeanprince9883 For the elderly people, possibly. But definitely not for teenagers it's not
@@jeanprince9883 I can agree with that.
Haha.. I just saw myself!

WHY HAVE YOU NOT DONE BIRMINGHAM YET?
I AM IN BIRMINGHAM RIGHT NOW! 🤣

I live in chesterfield youve missed off all the druggy homeless that blight the town .
I filmed what was in front of me
😂 not forgetting the spiceheads around the bus station leading up to West Bars. The area between Sports Direct and the library is a bit dodge too sometimes.
Empty town centre, empty shops, empty market, rather depressing.
This has got to be one of the most depressing videos I have ever seen. Chestopia.
You need to see our (Chesterfield) Christmas Promo video it will make you think this is an epic masterpiece!.. 😂
Just another drab english market town.
😮😮😮😮
worst place to live
I mean you could have shown the new part of town if i didn’t live here I wouldn’t come 🤣
