Great video, some lovely old pics of Sheffield, thank you for sharing, Sheffield really was very beautiful back in the day, with some stunning buildings full of character.... The old pics of Snig Hill that I've seen previously from engravings have it looking very Dickensian & full of charm.
Also a big well done Sheffield city council, who over the years have taken a charming, often quaint city, and demolished beautiful old buildings full of character & charm & replaced them with absolute tripe, or worse still, nothing at all.... Concrete, glass, steel & brick in their modern form all look soulless at the side of what was there. I understand that the Germans did their bit in WW2 where replanning our city was concerned, (& some areas may have been more slum like than others & in need of a bit of makeover), but that's nothing compared to the criminal act of vandalising the city in the name of progress by our dear council. To paraphrase Jane Austen's Mr Knightly.... "Badly done, Sheffield Council".... It looked better before all the "men of vision" had a hand in it from the Victorian/post modern era onwards. I can never understand why many towns & cities in the UK manage to keep their old buildings & refurbish them, but that ours in Sheffield have to be got rid of for no reason that it's people can see, other than because some city planner wanted to leave their mark. Dogs leave their mark too, but it doesn't mean any of us would want to step in it!

Best video I have seen Sheffield, only 176 views what is going on. I have been dismayed with the destruction since I was born in 1964, but this takes it to another level. I will share around and get you more views.

That was fantastic. I'm relatively new to Sheffield, only 11 years, and to see how it's changed over time is a great lesson. One of the best videos I've ever seen on RUclips. Thank you for taking your time to compile this. It's getting saved to my favourites, and I will watch it often. Bravo 👏👏👏

Extremely well done. Fascinating even for someone who doesn’t know Sheffield all that well.

Agreed Tim, it is shocking what has happened. So many beautiful buildings demolished and for what?

What a wonderful city it once was "Dora", makes Lincoln and York look tame.

One thing I notice about Victorian and Edwardian photos are people would be photographed outside their work or home but that isn’t a practise that’s done anymore on such a large scale.

Fantastic video, thanks for your hard work. Unfortunately it shows how a wonderful city has been turned into a soulless shell of it's former glory.

The Luftwaffe did a job, but they were amateurs compared to what the council demolished in the post war period. Such a shame really. We could have had a charming and beautiful old city centre if more of this had been kept, instead of being replaced by brutalist monstrosities.

Turning streets into pedestrian precincts also killed accessibility, which reduced the number of people visiting. You'd end up walking miles just to get a haircut and decide to just go somewhere you could park outside and pop-in! It's almost like it was by design! Even in the 70s I remember people already complaining about streets being shut off to traffic! It's not like people were getting run over all the time, it was a bustling city centre fgs. The result of successive socialist ideals where THEY think they know what's best for YOU.

There's an error. The entertainment place at the bottom of Snig hill was called the 'Black Swan' in the '60s, hence it was colloquially know as the 'Mucky Duck'.

Just found this video...absolutely fascinating...can't believe how many lovely, old buildings were knocked down for modernisation...couldn't some of the grander ones have been incorporated somehow? Still think " hole in the road" should have been left...Loved the early history too...wonder why Mary Queen of Scots is never mentioned on documentaries on telly that she spent fourteen years here in Sheffield? Never mind...Good vid! Cx

The cart sprinkling the road with water isn’t “cleaning” it, it’s keeping the dust down in hot weather from the dirt road.

ah i see, the desciption was 'cleaning the road'' on the photo i used - but keeping the dust down makes more sense!

Love change alley where Arundel gate is. So much was demolished when I was born in 1964. How they got away with demolishing Cole’s is criminal. 😢

Roads you can't even use unless you're a bus. Successive councils have killed the town centre by stopping people being able to park in/on the street they want top be on. No-one goes from outside cos they've made it almost impossible to get there in your own car. I got fined on my bike, just cos I went in to see what had changed and ended up on a bus lane! People aren't going to give up their cars, it's pointless having ONE car park for the entire city. Everything pedestrian, no cars or anywhere to park within a mile!
15 minute cities and you vill be eating ze bugs!

She wasnt imprisoned in the Turret House but somewhere in the main house. She certainly will have visited the Turret House but it would have been to risky to imprison her there (close to the outside) - a one time guide there

Very interesting to see old images of my hometown, but the photos purportedly showing what it's like today are already out of date. One thing Sheffield council seems to hate is its heritage. Not only that, Covid caused a lot of businesses to close and the council have taken that as a perfect reason to turn most of Fargate to the Moor into a construction site! And as for the old castle, that's been more like a destruction site for years now.
At least they're not chopping down thousands of perfectly healthy trees any more.

Is there anywhere Sheffield didn't pull down to widen the road? The city is a total dump most of planned by Sheffield city council.
