One of my violin teachers recommended practicing in an empty parking garage. He said that the echo makes you sound so good you'll be encouraged to practice more.
A room that is out of square sounds better try facing in the longest way so the low notes have room to complete their cycle also avoid hard surfaces theater curtains are a huge help but moving blankets are good also .
My studio sounds great because all the walls have bookshelves and cabinets. I record through my Tascam mixer through my Boss Me-80 multiple effects pedal or through a microphone ( Telefunkin m80)!
I worked in film, we sometimes recorded non sync dialogue in a makeshift booth made from moving blankets hung from C- stands. Also minivans worked well in a pinch. For music, you can cut down liveliness with comforters or blankets to cut down the slapback.
I once did the sound at a concert in a kiddie prison that had previously been a high school. The hall was the gymnasium where plywood had been bolted to every available surface. Talk about a bad room! We were a LOUD rock band (Christian) and every sound anybody made echoed at least three times! :( It was horrible and there was very little I could do about it, save some EQ treatment which only goes so far in killing echo. Somehow, our message got across and great things happened that day :) The sound was awful though. Lol

Not a sound tech, but when I'm preparing to perform or practice in a new space I'll always clap my hands to hear the liveliness of the room.
