Loved how Alex responded to those questions. Very precise and thoughtful! Explaining the thought processes behind the climb and dealing with fear and doubt
Yes , I was thinking the same! The interviewer didn't prepare the interview and doesn't care at all to understand Alex, by the way very humble and very clever , well done Alex!
Alex schooled the interviewer. "Isn't it obvious, of you fall you die." It is great to see someone of Strength such as Alex, interviewed by another of Strength, such as Jimmy Chen, then you can feel the power and gift they have. However, I did enjoy this interview also.. I love how Alex explains thinking things through, the differance between an injury or death may be controlling panic, and a clear head, from rehearsal and preparation. Thanks Alex for the encouragement. .
+John Hall Agreed, "Explain why mentally free soloing is more challenging?" Hats off to Alex for being polite enough not to call the interviewer an idiot.
Pretty much all of Honnold's interviews are awkward and a little on the strange side. He is a little quirky..plus, other than climbers, who really knows anything about and understands climbing? The host has two options. Either be clueless about climbing or two, do a little bit of research to learn the terms and jargon and fake it. I'd rather have a host that chooses option #1. I'd like a host to be honest. The hosts interviewing Alex will probably never do another climbing interview in their entire career. So other than learning about his personal accomplishments, I don't think that learning the history of the sport and the 'terms' in necessary.
Know fuck all about climbing. Don't really know a lot abut Honnold but I enjoy listening to him because he's so factual and honest. There's absolutely no pretence because he doesn't have to be- he puts himself in a position where anything but pure honesty is putting himself in more danger and that's incredibly endearing and fascinating.
Holy shit. I'm confident free-climbing is something I will never do in my life. All the respect in the world for Alex; I had no idea this was a thing. Insane.
+Um Hu Don't get confused by the terms free-climbing and free-soloing. Free-climbing just means without support of gear but with protection. Free-soloing means no gear at all except ofcourse chalkbag and climbing shoes...
Alex Honnold is one of the greatest climbers in the world… you should be asking him about his feats and experiences, not basic climbing questions which can be answered by common sense or a quick google
Wow Alex actually had some pretty amazing things to say, instead of listen and fucking learn what a great mind has to offer he kept interrupting. Painful to watch, sorry for thatAlex, dude you're awesome.
I disagree. The interview pace comes off as 'not smooth', but a good interviewer gets good information out of his guest and that's what he seems to be accomplishing here.
I think what’s most important when it comes to contemplation of death is understanding how much you are pissing your life away. This practice puts your priorities in check and gets you to stop taking your life for granted.
**alex talks about visualizing his death as a necessity for 10 straight minutes** Interview: soooo why is freesolo-ing different than regular climbing Alex: 👁👁
Actually didn't think this was such a bad interview. Was interesting to hear one of the heroes of climbing elaborate a bit more. I think it's just that Bensinger's style is more suited to more traditional type professional athletes than a no big deal dirtbag Honnold type of guy. He prob would have done well to look at other videos and seen how awkward the late night interviews are compared to his climbing videos.
People are being to hard on the interviewer, when you consider that what Alex does most people would not find that not NORMAL and so the questions are not always going to be perfect. Most of the negative comments would be from people in the climbing field.
no we're not. he's an idiot and seems to be TRYING to irritate Honnold - to make him defend who he is rather than simply talk about who he is... probably 'cause Honnold's an atheist and Graham's dedicated his anus to the lord god jesus christ
To all the people giving the interviewer crap: maybe he shot and missed with this interview (although I thought he was okay here) but he has many other fantastic interviews with people where they’re the best interview I’ve ever seen of that specific person. Maybe he wasn’t as prepped for this one but I think all the comments are pretty harsh.
the host of the show seems like he's stuck somewhere between trying WAY too hard to understand something beyond his capacity to understand and being a caty 6th grade girl. probably a gay republican
I am in awe of Alex Honnold. His level of self control is almost paranormal. I can't even imagine being able to do the things he does.
Looking into Honnold's eyes is like staring into an infinite dark abyss
nirvana
"So... like... WHY is freesoloing harder mentally than with a rope?"
Seriously?
Loved how Alex responded to those questions. Very precise and thoughtful! Explaining the thought processes behind the climb and dealing with fear and doubt

So so true.

Let Honnold be Honnold! Stop asking him dumb questions, please!
+John Hall Agreed, "Explain why mentally free soloing is more challenging?" Hats off to Alex for being polite enough not to call the interviewer an idiot.
Alex is so fckin kool that this interview actually didnt turned out to be a disaster.

This Man is a G...enius!!!. To enjoy something wholly and completely you have to have every angle covered.
Genius. For climging up mountain faces with no ropes? Erm ... no.
Nice twist from Alex asking about highway crash in return to that stupid question about visualizing his death!
Biggest mistake is turning this interview into an interrogation..
Everyone has pictured their death at a few point's in their life. I dont know why this guy is avoiding saying yes.
Know fuck all about climbing. Don't really know a lot abut Honnold but I enjoy listening to him because he's so factual and honest. Alex made a good point that we all could die anytime in a bad car accident. Dive alert folks.
Alex Honnold is one of the greatest climbers in the world… you should be asking him about his feats and experiences, not basic climbing questions which can be answered by common sense or a quick google
He looks so adorable here.
Wow Alex actually had some pretty amazing things to say, instead of listen and fucking learn what a great mind has to offer he kept interrupting. Painful to watch, sorry for thatAlex, dude you're awesome.
This interviewer is just not it. Nope.
I disagree. The interview pace comes off as 'not smooth', but a good interviewer gets good information out of his guest and that's what he seems to be accomplishing here.
Graham off his game on this one.
trivial questions... not worth it
ALEX is the GOAT
He's blessed! i get it
"Like what? Why?" Good one Graham
nothing against Graham but I wish Howard Stern would interview Alex instead
The interview is about who he is?
He would make a good stock market investor. Same principles at heart.
Can someone counts how many times he says "Like"
Alex, how do you adjust your balance to account for the size of your nuts while climbing?
not wearing a seat belt is not big of a deal for this guy.
Okay, now in this one the questions were really stupid :
Alex is a rock god
Give Graham a break. Some of Alex's responses are so unreal (but awesome) they take the interviewer by complete surprise.
I think what’s most important when it comes to contemplation of death is understanding how much you are pissing your life away. This practice puts your priorities in check and gets you to stop taking your life for granted.
Alex is not a guest. He should just say no when people ask. And Graham should take a class.
Poor Alex had to sit through this :(
It's because he sits thru it that he's not poor.
**alex talks about visualizing his death as a necessity for 10 straight minutes**
Interview: soooo why is freesolo-ing different than regular climbing
Alex: 👁👁
Do stern or Jre. Maybe even burr.

How is Alex a dirtbag?
Mr. Honnold, you're the best, dude! Now visualize earthquakes, which do happen...and retire from soloing.
People are being to hard on the interviewer, when you consider that what Alex does most people would not find that not NORMAL and so the questions are not always going to be perfect. Most of the negative comments would be from people in the climbing field.

Dreama40 Not in the climbing field. Fucking wanted the interviewer to trade places with the cameraman.
Alex lays it on the line doesn't he . . ? : >)
People seem to get irritated with him they don't understand him clearly.
Every person who interviews Alex gets scared haha
Ah ha, thanks for the laugh..
That's great and true..
talk about stupid questions. This guy can't relate to Alex at all. He probably doesn't even climb
+Alpine Junkie He doesn't, he interviews people. Jesus Christ are you fucking stupid.
Fuck you
Why the fuck would he climb you fucking douche
I agree fucking terrible interview, the guy didn't understand how to shut the fuck up and listen to Alex. Could have been a great interview
Hey dipshit kiss ass
To all the people giving the interviewer crap: maybe he shot and missed with this interview (although I thought he was okay here) but he has many other fantastic interviews with people where they’re the best interview I’ve ever seen of that specific person. Maybe he wasn’t as prepped for this one but I think all the comments are pretty harsh.
grahams a cool guy
Stop interrupting the guy
this graham guy is a clown show
Sorry
Really? Why then? Would you have the time to elaborate a bit on this one?
Aw man, I totally get what Alex is trying to say. He just can't explain it to Graham very well.
+Billy Hin I thought he explained it well but Graham just wasn't trying to understand.
Graham is sick the way he asks questions.
1:46 like...WTF haahha..
it's illegal for me to leave my driveway without a seatbelt on !!!! just sayin
the interviewer lacks the sense of what to ask and clearly how to ask questions..
Don't talk over your guest man!
Interviewer doesn't know how to interview someone of Alex's calibre
Alex should have walked out of this. interview
The interviewer shouldn’t be an interviewer
I like the heroin hairdo
These short clips are so annoying and a waste of time. Just play the whole interview for God's sake!
This is the definition of white
Worst interviewer on the face of the earth - doing nothing but digging for sensationalism...just my take on it...and I've been wrong before.
this interviewer must have gotten shooed in on grounds of nepotism, guy can barely string together 2 sentences
The interviewer is just a privlidge rich guy paying celebs and pretending to be someone important. He fails at interviewing.
the host of the show seems like he's stuck somewhere between trying WAY too hard to understand something beyond his capacity to understand and being a caty 6th grade girl. probably a gay republican
Awful interviewer
