Never mind the huge range for an obviously natural contralto. Or the uniquely rich, dark timbre. That last belting section is one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever heard. Welcome to the wonderful world of Diana Ankudinova. Every song she performs becomes the pinnacle of art. This was not her head voice, it is not her full chest voice either it is called mixed voice, it sounds so deep because of her unique low voice and timbre, she can go lower than that and she has done it before in other performances and way more extensively than here.
She is after all a contralto which the deepest female vocal register and the most rare of all vocal register male included.
Having a naturally deep voice though is not stopping her from having also a huge range so she can also hit the soprano range effortlessly.
Even more fascinating is that she is still very young 18 years old in this video 19 currently and her voice continues to develop

Diana, the unique singer and songwriter from Russia was born in May, 31. 2003 in the Far East of Russia. She is 1,65m/ 5,41ft tall.
Diana has something primal, mystical, but also sensitive and sensual in her voice and she lives her songs. She also has a perfect pitch and her sense of rhythm was exceptional even as a little girl. Diana is a dramatic contralto, the rarest and lowest female voice type (her range C3-D7). Her voice has natural polyphonic overtones and sometimes specifically an undertone = sub harmonic. (You hear the voice an octave lower than Diana sings. Not everyone can hear that.)
Undertone singing is a singing technique that belongs to the main category of overtone singing in which the vibration mode of the vocal cords is modulated to produce sounds that are below the singing tone.

Diana didn't have a happy start in life.The woman who gave birth to her had many pregnancies, only Diana survived. She did not love her child, cruelly abused him and tried to drown him.
The 3 year old child was found at a bus stop with a broken collarbone and taken to an orphanage. There she finally found love ... from Irina Ponik, a massagetherapist. Taking a young child into the family was not easy for Irina. Her son was already 20 years old, daughter Nastya 17 years. Now start all over again? Yes!!! Diana came to a poor but loving family when she was 5 years old.
Diana spoke badly, cried a lot and was still very scared but she all sing songs from cartoons. The doctor recommended singing lessons and so, the singing teacher Elena Kazantseva discovered Diana's talent. And it all started at the age of 5...
During 2008 to 2012 Diana sang around 40 songs, including at competitions.
Her mother, Irina Ponik, turned her whole life inside out and started all over with a new motherhood and many new professions - seamstress, manager, vblogger… admirable.
Everything that has to do with Diana's singing training, performances, competitions, looking for sponsors is organized and coordinated by her mother Irina Ponik. She took extra sewing courses too. Since then, she's been sewing all of Diana's stage costumes, because all of these things consume the family budget.
Irina accompanies her daughter on trips and captures her life in photos and videos with the persistence of a visionary. It is admirable how she promotes her daughter's career, teaching her how to fly but makes sure that she is down to earth Remains.
Diana impressed with her talent in over 50 national and international competitions. Her confidence grew, her voice continued to develop ... until one day she was asked to compete in more distant competitions so that other children could have a chance to win.

In 2018 and 2019 Diana entered a competition 'You are Super and won twice. That project is unique in the world, an international TV- competition especially for adopted and orphaned children.
The winner of the season will be determined by a 6-day public vote and the final took place in the Kremlin Palace and her videos were uploaded to RUclips and soon Diana had millions of fans.
The project producers help the finalists to start their studies and promote their creativity. Diana won a scholarship and Igor Krutoy (Russian music titan, billionaire, juror and sponsor) gave her a small apartment (37m²/ 398.26 ft²) in Moscow. There she lives with her mother and grandmother and was able to start her vocal training with the best teachers such as Professor Olga Donskoy. (She died of Covid-19 in October 2020). Now Diana is taught by the great Alexandra Pismennaya, who was a student of Prof. Donskoy.
The break of voice made Diana’s voice even darker and deeper. She has mastered this time very professionally and has worked hard to bring back the lost high notes and has expanded her vocal range, currently from C3 - E6. Her genres are folk rock, folk pop, but also jazz, soul, blues... and always in the unique Diana style... Tradition meets modernity.
She loves to sing in French, but also sings in English, German, Arabic and Spanish... but only phonetically so far. She plays the piano and ukulele. She composes and creates her own songs.
But Diana is not only a great singer and storyteller. She lives her songs and touches our hearts and souls. But also she looks beautiful and she is a humble, smart and hardworking young woman. She also gives charity concerts. She loves her family and her fans. We are Diana's 'friends' and support her. Diana really appreciates that her friends helped to improve her home studio and also sponsored her first album. The Russian friends have chosen Diana as their 'national treasure'. The judge who stood up is Zusif Eyvazov, an Azerbaijani opera singer, world famous and huseband of a Russian opera diva Anna Netrebko. I was on their concert last year. I was great. And, if a guy like him is impressed, that says it all.

She is Dimash in a way that Dimash is super high for male, she is a dramatic contralto, deep voiced female. Literally both of them never just sing a note. They color it, they paint with their voice, they create atmosphere, world. That even includes perfect imperfect sounds adding more emotion, feel when needed. They also don't perform. They become the character. So we feel everything is natural, true, flows out from them.

Diana has a very rare voice. She is a contralto and she is also polyphonic, which means she can produce several tones at the same time. It makes her voice sound so full.
Diana's background: Diana was born on May 31, 2003 in the Far East of Russia. She was severely abused as a small child and abandoned on the street by her birth mother in winter when she was only 3 years old with a broken collarbone. She was then taken to an orphanage where, after more than one year, she was adopted by Irina Ponik, a massage therapist. At the age of four and a half, Diana still could not speak properly. She also stuttered. Experts recommended that she take singing lessons to improve her general speaking and vocal skills.
This is a TV show in Russia. There are 9 weeks with 9 shows and 9 well known artists. Diana is the youngest artist. They had to sing songs from 9 genres. The last TV show was on 20. November 2021. The 9 artists are also the judges for the other singer. And Diana (18 yo) won the overall competition of which Diana won 4 and took 2nd place once. She shocked the other singers with the first song. The Crow was her masterpiece in this competition, in my opinion. The judge who stands up is the great opera singer Yusif Eyvazov and the husband of Anna Netrebko, who is world famous. He's very impressed.

At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the first to recognize something special in this little girl, and eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons because it was thought that this might help her learn to speak without impediment.
Only two years later she started singing in local theater, and in street plays and performances. And soon after was entered in a Russian TV music competition for disadvantaged children. By the age of 10 she was winning local competitions, singing on live TV shows, and her songs started showing up on RUclips. Two months ago, at the age of 18, her first performance during a new Russian television competition with several other renowned performers, has gone viral and has garnered hundreds of RUclips 'reaction' videos, and millions of viewers.
Her first song at the competition, an entirely new take on Elvis Presley's 'Can't Help Falling in Love with You' has been called mesmerizing, transcendental and other-worldly...it highlights her uniquely deep voice, and effortless range from low to high, along with her trademark dramatic and passionate interpretation. The girl in red is Julia Parshuta, my number 2 favorite Russian singer! Just a lovely voice! The man standing in awe is Yusif Eyvazov, husband of world famous operatic soprano Anna Netrebko and an opera singer himself.

Diana uses a chest voice when performing low notes, and a head voice when performing high notes. Sometimes when performing high notes, she adds a chest voice with low notes as support. And all this is constantly accompanied by a polyphonic effect, forming up to three voices at the same time.

Mr. J absolutely her vocal tone is unique and unbelievable. I’ve been a fan for years. She is a vocal talent like NO OTHER. You must view her theatrical interpretation of her cover of “SWEET DREAMS” on a new RUSSIAN MASK SHOW. It absolutely blew my mind because she can control and manipulate her singing like no one else. I’m older and in my almost 60’ years she’s ASTONISHING on the show. The goal of the show is that the judges are not suppose to recognize her. Nevertheless, her low tone does make it difficult to avoid it. One ☝🏽 judge gave up her own daughter in order for DIANA be allowed to perform. Great 👍🏽 Choice..not many in the STATES know of her but I’m fortunately one who greatly admires her musical journey and AMAZING talent.

So, the judge in red is Yulia Parshuto, herself a well-known singer, and the man who stood was Yusef Eiwazov, who is married to world- class opera singer Anna Netrebko. Diana is a true contralto, and you are correct in assessing her power as a singer, using head voice when you would not expect it. Her range is B flat 3 to D flat 5. I'm sorry you missed the end of the clip, when Yulia just stands and holds her head in awe. You should listen to some of her other clips- Rechenka, Wicked Game, Human, Personal Jesus. It's mind-boggling.
Where did you find the information on her range? I remember seeing somewhere that it was measured as C3 to B flat 5 during this performance

Mr. J, sorry for the lenghy post but it's almost impossible to give a short answer to try and explain the talent that is Diana Ankudinova. Now, for you and all those in your audience that may not know, this performance took place on September 25, 2021 and was the first performance during the inaugural season of a new Russian vocal competition called the "ShowMaskGoOn!". Diana's Ankudinova’s cover of the Elvis Presley classic Can't Help Falling In Love, demonstrates Diana Ankudinova has developed into a true contralto voice type. For those that don't know female voice types, a contralto is the lowest kind of female voice, and a true contralto voice is very, very rare.
During the beginning this first performance you can here Diana’s low contralto sound, and a common question is asked about Diana's vocal range because vocal range is one of the primary defining factors used in determining a female singer's voice type. In 2017, at age 13, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5. Diana has said she is was not happy with her lack of a higher vocal range, and this lack kept her out of the more prestigious music academies. Diana, along with her vocal teacher decided to work extensively on developing a higher vocal range.
In September 2021, during this performance, at age 18, her vocal range was again measured and the work she and her voice teacher put in is on full display. During this performance her vocal range was again measured, and now her functional range goes from a low of C3 to a high of B♭5, almost 3-octaves. But it's not just how low she can go, it's in the exceptional quality of her tone in her lower range. It's in the roundness, fullness, the depth of her voice, and in her ability to create, access, and use an enormous amount of resonance. Diana's ability to create and use this resonance further defines Diana as a Dramatic Contralto, and and that is the deepest, darkest, and most powerful contralto voice, plus a "Dramatic Contralto", is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types.
The question most people ask? How does Diana do it? How is it possible for such a young female singer to achieve this low, rich, deep, and profound sound? Without the ability to scope her vocal tract while she is producing these low notes to actually see what is happening within her vocal tract, the general conciseness is simply attributing Diana's ability to her winning the genetic lottery, meaning she was just born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana's vocal folds (vocal cords) appear to be longer and thicker than most female singers. Her larynx also appears to be larger and her pharynx similarly appears to be longer than most female singers, plus she has a large oral cavity. When combined, this unique vocal anatomy gives Diana Ankudinova the ability to produce the low, deep, rich, and full sounds, but without actually scoping Diana's vocal track to verify, there is no way to be 100% sure.
Diana is also a master at using a vocal technique known as polyphonic singing which is an extraordinary accomplishment for someone so young. A singer that has mastered polyphonic singing can create one, and sometimes two, different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and undertones that can make it sound like more than one voice singing.
It is this polyphonic ability that has some people believing Diana Ankudinova is using some form of artificial electronic voice manipulation or is using some kind of pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing in the background off stage, or Diana is lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track that was altered or modified. No artificial manipulation of Diana's voice is happening at all, and no one else is singing off stage, nor is she lip-syncing to a vocal track. Other voices and music you are hearing are all backing tracks used to fill in and round out the performance along with the musical score. Diana Ankudinova and only Diana Ankudinova is singing Can't Help Falling In Love.
During this competition Diana was the first to perform with her cover of "Can't Help Falling In Love" during "TheShowMaskGoOn!" competition. Diana was competing against 9 other professional singers who were also judges. This new vocal competition was televised over a nine week period, one episode per week with the nine other judges/professional singers competing against each other and based on their individual performance they awarded judging points to each other, and when not competing, Diana was also a member of this judging panel.
Every week, each singer took the stage and performed a different song over each of the nine weeks. Each contestant had to sing a different song from a different genre using different styles. The ShowMaskGoOn! concluded on November 20, 2021. During Diana's performance, the judge on the top row, the first to stand up is the Russian opera tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan. He was invited to participate as a special guest judge for this competition. Yusif Eyvazov is married to the world-famous Russian soprano Anna Netrebko. At the end of Diana's performance, she receives a standing ovation from all her fellow competitors. One of her competitors is Julia Parshuta who is a well-known contemporary Russian singer and is the blond woman standing in the center row dressed in red. She looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance, puts both hands on top of her head, and looks totally bewildered and is in total disbelief. Julia Parshuta, in addition to the other judges now know, at some point, she and the other contestants will have to compete against Diana Ankudinova, who everyone now recognizes as a generational talent. Finally, Diana won this competition.
