For me there is something very special about 911s from this era. Enjoy your car.
Your eyes @ 4:00 when hitting the throttle are like an addict getting his fix, love it!!!
Accurate.
Ikr, he looks totally high. Awesome.
So true about the feeling driving a real car. Still remember the day when I drove my 83 911 from the car dealer ( about 40 klms distance ) & remember the first corner I took....wow, all the weight as the back & trying not to slide out. This car makes you a better driver no doubt. No power steering, no A.B.S, no airbags.....Oh Yeah !
Wow super clean car man. Cool to see your video work from a few years back - you definitely increased the energy level in your latest videos! Something I need to work on
Yeah i really cringe watching myself in some of these earlier videos, but I leave them up since its a good reminder of where I'm at today and how much has changed
Gorgeous car. My dream car. Wanted one since I was 12 years old in 1978, they just somehow imprinted in my brain as the most desirable car in every way. I don’t really want a watercooled 911, they have just gotten so big and heavy, just not the same. But now the air-cooled cars have been priced into absurdity..it wasn’t that long ago that no one wanted the 80’s era cars and I have passed up so many. Of all the 911’s the late 80’s cars with the G50 are my absolute favorite! Enjoy it man!
I've been privileged to drive my bro's 1983 911 SC 9 years ago and you couldn't take the grin off of my face😎 Great car and vid!!😎
Thank You! I haven't driven an SC yet...That's on my list for sure for comparison
Tedward You're welcome and I'm sure you'll enjoy it when you do!
This gave me great insight into what I'm wanting to do with my 82SC. I have the m&k exhaust with ssi headers so far but need to sort the suspension out with new shocks, adjustable sway bars, bushings and strut brace. Where did you find the door panels as well as the front bumper? Keep the sweet content coming man!
Nice vid. Looks like a sweet car, I am still dreaming of the day I can drive mine ;)
What are the front and back bumpers? cant find anything looks gorgeious
looking like a fighter pilot with those harnesses and that epic stache
Nice ride....hang on to the beauty.
Awesome car, better keep it forever...they go up in value every day
My thoughts exactly!
Only for a short time right now
luckily they jumped up and are now just steady on the increase..its almost like they were undervalued for years and they made up for it lol. Not like those BMW 1M's that were trading for double and dropped like a brick in the last few months
The bubble, if you wanna call it that will always be around air cooled 911's! Bought mine for $10,000 9 yrs ago and they had been on the rise holding steady, and look now. Either way you're not going to take a loss because at its worst it will hold great value unlike a modern car like the 997, the c5 and c6 corvette, camaro, etc.
How reliable has it been?
Ted, did you buy the car stock then modify it or buy it as is? Just curious about the build process. Thinking about buying a 964 and modding it to something similar to yours. Dope car man
I got reallllly lucky and bought this car fully built. I say lucky because since then, I've seen others for sale which are similarly modded, but looked pretty beat or built sketchily. 964s are amazing platforms...Just gotta make sure its not leaking oil (pretty characteristic of those engines) and then have fun! Brakes, suspension, wheels, tires. Then go crazy with seats and roll bars and belts haha
Hey Ted, nice car. I have an '85 911. Was wondering why your wheels lack center caps and have silver as opposed to black lugs. Are these your track wheels?
No idea why they are silver lugs, but I just simply lack centercaps lol...I will get a set this summer
I thought the lack of caps was a trick to marginally reduce unsprung weight! I have seen many track wheels w/o them but figured they simply did not want to transfer the caps back and forth.
My guess on the silver lugs is that they may be a little more durable than the black aluminum lugs, especially if one is swapping out track wheels often.
I hate when people suggest how I spend my money, but these two details can be cheaply accomplished and those 7" and 9" rare jewels deserve it. The enameled Porsche crest caps look really fine on my identical wheels if you can swing 'em.
Regards.
I knew it looks Boston-familiar and then at 4:51.....lol. I love the green sign on the train stop. Cry me a river , wroom wrooom.
BC all the way!
The mod list is longer but these are the heavy hitters! ....And pardon my mustache =)
Eh, it's Movember; we'll forgive you! 😜
And you just made me nervous about picking up one I just saw for sale recently. LOL I've never driven a rear engine or non abs car that I can recall haha
This was my first Porsche and first Rear engine car I had ever owned OR driven. If you are patient and enjoy a challenge, I can highly recommend it!
Thanks for the reply. Good to hear it was your first as well. I'm more of a 964 guy as it has more "modern" accoutrements but the rawness of a 3.2 has caught my eye as of late. Did you attend the PCA car control courses they offer from time to time. I think I'll do those and maybe autocross to get practice. Last thing I want to be is a one of those drivers in the "mustang/cars and coffee" videos losing control of his 911 haha
Why does the front bumper remind me of a 964 did it come out like that or was it just added on to the car ?
Was added...its a RUF front bumper (think CTR Yellowbird)
Is it only the front bumper which is diffrent?
RE-11s are available again. Why did you Wevo a G50?
I bought the car fully built so the wevo was not my choice...But if I had the choice I'd still throw in the Wevo. I love the feel of that shifter. I wish RE-71R sizes matched these wheels. That would be the right tire for the job
I have no problem daily driving my 86 911 M491 targa. Mind you I have a few classics so I rotate cars every few weeks. But while I have it, it gets regular daily service and the occasional road trip. It’s easy enough.
harnesses are a no no for the street, if you get into an accident, you want a little give so that your body can flex a little (a 3 point seatbelt is better for that reason). At the track you normally have helmets or hans devices so that other parts of the body are protected from the rigidity of the straps.
I have a black 85' 911 and I can relate. Though I'm biased to the 915 as I see it making the experience even more raw ;)
Raw is right! My buddy is commuting with a 915 in LA right now. He's getting used to it but the first week was pretty rough on him lol
Tedward Oh... if the box is recently rebuilt or in good shape it'll work, but if it grind on 1st and 3rd and block-out on 2nd - commuting is no bueno. My box is like this and I avoid traffic. anyways, it a lot of personality and charm! keep it up and keep it on the road!
My 82' SC has only 62K miles. I drove my 78' SC to work for ten years.
Phenomenal build! Can't wait to check it out. I haven't driven anything older than a 996. How modded was it when you bought it?
It's funny how an older driver such as myself doesn't consider how unique the driving experience these cars offer versus the newer offerings. I have had the opportunity to enthusiastically drive a few water cooled 911's, but I own and drive an 85 and a 96 and I can confirm that the newer cars are very quick but are geared much more toward comfort and user friendliness.....but at semi legal speeds, a little boring. Good explanation of throttle inputs and "lifting" in the middle of corners by the way.....no electronic nannies to save you if you're not smooth!
Please make the nick Murray review it
The paddles are like old VW Beatles... Hahahaha! I think it would sound better if you just say the paddles are inspired in racing, unlike 99% of other production cars. Sry about spelling and so. By the way, I had one from 89 and other from 91, and they were a perfect daily cars. Regards
4:00 I know that feels, bro...
This was my first 911. Cost $50k - thought that was a lot. Just ordered a 2022 911 cost almost $200k.
is this a parody? or for real?
Don't believe all the hype about the the arrival of the g50 transmission! Porsche won more races in rally, baja and track with the transmissions of their day. New technology makes things better but not necessarily make the older, crap ! Like most 1st time owners I'm sure you have added more bolt on bling to your 911 than actual up to date and current mechanical maintanence. Remember to take care of necessary 1st, and bling and accessories can wait! If you are excited now with your 1st 911, imagine when you have a 2nd and a third Porsche and you sit back and watch your collection grow. I tell you, it's addictive!
Joe Joe
The difference is in the Synchros. I drove several 915 Trans cars before I got my 87 G50 car. The G50 really shifts smoother, and quicker than the 915. But does the 915 do the job? Heck yes! The 915 is great if the synchros are in good condition.
You running 7/8 inch in 15s or 16s?
16s. Turbo setup with wheels and brakes
@@TedwardDrives I’m debating switching to 7/8s but tempted to go to 15inch. Magnus walker only ever goes 15inch on his builds for the shorter gearing I believe
There are more tire options with the 16’s. Magnus uses Avon (I believe) super aggressive summer tires, so if you’re using the car other than track / hot summer days, I’d stick with 16’s
@@kellylaws1 thanks for the reply 👍
Looking at an '88 Targa right now. Watching your videos while trying to make a "rational" decision probably isn't smart. :-)
Targas are great value and fun! much quicker than you'd expect as well
mustache
Short lived...But i enjoyed it while it lasted haha
3:21 Domo!! (^‿^v)
Like your car . . . but it's a bit of a stretch to describe it as "one of the last of the air cooled". After all, Porsche sold air cooled 911s for a full decade after yours was made!! The 993 was still built through to mid 1998
@4:43
Freddy?
i want to get it...but i dont get it haha
Tedward mercury :D
yessssssss
Nice 911. Do you have a Steve Wong chip in It? If not, he makes a chip that goes with the M &K setup you have. Get one. You will not regret it. 911chips.com. I put one in mine, and it really wakes it up. It runs much smoother, idles way better, and has more low end torque than before. It starts making the magic at about 3200 RPM instead of 4500... You even get better mileage too.
Yes I have the steve wong chip =)
I had both G50 and the 915 gearboxes in my 911's - Had a 356 with a 4 speed back in the the day.The argument is as silly as a redhead, blonde our brunette? Beatles vs Stones - go have fun with the greatest sports car ever! But after 1989 - it is not really a 911 - IMHO....
Have to respectfully disagree, whilst adopting your similes: Blondes, Stones and G50 hands down!
@@samuelbeckett4673 I currently drive a 1989 3.2 And yes the G50 is better.
@@toddadale Very good to hear, because I just bought a 1989 3.2! Mine will have a tail, but not sure how I feel about it. I think it somewhat ruins the lines, but my mechanic says it's aerodynamically useful over 80 kph. Any insights (assuming yours is tailed)?
@@samuelbeckett4673 Well Sam, mine does not have a tail. Though I have a Targa. I think with a Targa, a tail or the Turbo 930 Tea Table is overblown - visually. On a coupe 3.2? I like them both - with or without. Removing a tail is not a big deal is that is what one desires. Aesthetically? It is in the eyes of the "owner" Personally, knowing how the 911 market works and for value? The more stock, the better. It is an investment to me and I like keeping it that way. Mine 1989 3.2 is stock, but for 930 tie rods, a really good sound system. LED headlights and brake lights without modification. Even placed an alpine amp hidden away in the foot panel; a self-powered subwoofer under the passenger seat. LED's bulbs for VDO gauges - Have a All this can be removed if I ever sold it and if the person with to do. Something I do not plan ever to do. A one owner car when I bought it 10 years ago. with 52k on it. I am at 103k currently.. Have fun and safe travels....
@@toddadale Thank you! Very helpful indeed. I'm selling my beloved 2012 Cayman S Black Edition to offset the cost of my 3.2 purchase, and since this is my first vintage Porsche, I'm a bit nervous about all the things I don't know. My 3.2 is a coupe, so I think I will drive it for a year as is and then decide whether to keep the tail on or not. I will also upgrade the sound system at some point. One last question please: Did you change the stock wheel on yours? I find it so big! So thinking of a Momo which so many 3.2 owners seem to have. But it sort of ruins the vintage look a little I think?
One of the last air cooled ? You meant oil cooled, and not the one of the last once, that's for sure. You don't know much about Porsches.....Last oil cooled was build in 1997 so 9 years after yours. Fact
hipster as fuck......
also the lack of wheel center caps is disturbing
grow a mustache in November they said...
