The IOC didn’t even take responsibility for that. They said they added extra barriers and padding to calm the nerves of the remaining contestants, not for anything safety reasons. They don’t really care from what I’ve seen.

It really wouldn't help at all as you have a sled going 140 kph, that weighs probably around 1000+ pounds. A few mats wouldn't do anything positive and anything larger would cause a huge amount of deceleration which could make the situation much worse. i love how commentators always make sure to say crashes aren't due to the course being poorly made because others have successfully made it down but they literally caught air in the beginning on a straight away i refuse to believe there aren't commonly issues with these tracks
That's because Whistler is a insanely fast and for its speed tight track. It used to be hugely unsafe when it was run in the 2010 olympics, got a reputation as a death trap and had since improved a lot when it comes to safety. In the end bobsledding is a sport with huge concussion risks like many winter sports and team sports. They meant Whistler wasn't any less safe than other tracks, which was by that point true. Also catching a lil air on a straight is fine, you can calculate how high a 4 person bob can go with good reliability. (Besides they didn't catch air, they lifted a ski on entry, which happens on tight tracks) Been watching this sport for 15 years now and know many of the tracks and (in this case, sadly) their histories.
My daughter has trained/raced at Whistler, thankfully always stayed upright. Even at high speeds ( 135/140 Kms) it is a very technical track and so fast. It’s not a bad track .
I personally train in Whistler and the track is not poorly designed. Its the fastes track on the planet so its very hard to get correct thats why a lot of people crash.
Wonder if they could invent a roll bar to protect their head and neck? Something that pops up like a convertible.. Mercedes Benz has a roll bar that once it flips or rolls a steal bar springs up... doesn’t sound to far fetched for the sled. Hate to see their heads dragging on the ice.
General HowTo only prob is them things work on like a gimble type thing so when it goes over a certain lean an explosive charge fires the struts like u said, Prob pure an simple safety and the fact they can lean so much
That might have the effect of digging into the ice and violently flipping the sled unpredictably. This way at least their helmet can slide on the relatively smooth ice
these guys crash every single day and their sleds are extremely minimal. it would ad too much weight and would probably damage the sled and require a whole lot of work to get it sliding again. these guys crash, go back to the top and try again. crashing is just part of the sport
my head is so hot you could cook an egg in my country. If you want. I live in holland. Buy an egg. a pan. A stove. Enjoy. Dont forget some butter or oil. hmm. Nom nom

Chris Mccall it could be taken in many ways but this is the internet and I can't hear which word you accented so stop trying to make excuses for your stupidity
Many safety problems in Whistler! First, you got Nodar Kumaritashvili at the 2010 olympics that dies doing luge by crashing in 16th turn, gets ejected and bangs head first in 2nd metal pole, then you got the belgium team that crashes with a bobsleigh!
I guess steering these things takes a bit of skill. But it's hard - at least for me - to see much that deserves a medal for the rest of the team; run fast for 3 secs, jump on board and tuck your head in for the next 2 mins!
The 1st reporter does 24H Series, BlancPain Endurance Championship, IMSA, and WEC also I believe Formula 1, very well known in the Motorsports community

Can’t someone make a bobsled with like a bullet proof window that protects the head if it crash, like lets say the window is movable so when you start they run and then when they sit down they put the window down and it will protect the heads

I'm surprised that there's so little protection around the sides of the track, especially after the death of Nodar in 2010
The IOC didn’t even take responsibility for that. They said they added extra barriers and padding to calm the nerves of the remaining contestants, not for anything safety reasons. They don’t really care from what I’ve seen.
They need two things:
1) a Halo like F1 cars
2) a net or something like that, that deploys to stop sleds
Michael Frymus a net would cause a instant stop, aka a lot of g’s, aka death

theres absolutely nothing stopping that sled once it starts. also there is a roof to drop from but like I said theres nothing that can stop that sled
