One thing I love about growing as an adult is how wide our music tastes grow. As a youngster it’s hard to avoid the societal expectations of what you “should” listen to compared to what you “want” to listen to. And this can contribute to a very narrow, tunnel like vision when it comes to music, completely focusing on one genre really and not even trying any others.
Anyways, love when people find new things they never listened to before and realize they really enjoy it.

The story of the video is great. Totally un-promoted, they set up in an empty lot next to a liquor store in Pomona, California, and started playing the song over-and-over again. They had a video recording crew capturing whatever happened. None of the spectators were invited, and nothing they did was planned. They are just the odd mix of people who gradually showed up in a viral way. No doubt some of the goofy weirdness relates to them playing just the one song over-and-over again all without any explanation to the crowd that gathered to party. The video was then edited from all the video that had been captured.

Sum 41 is one of those bands that people associate with the pop-punk explosion of the early 2000s because of their debut album and big hit(s), but are actually much more talented and versatile than a lot of people give them credit for. Many rock artist of the era grew softer as time went on, but Sum 41 was one of the few that actually grew heavier as their career went on.
EVERYONE knows Fat Lip and their other big early hit, In Too Deep. They're two of the biggest songs of the pop-punk boom. For a lot of people the story ends there, but I live in Canada, where they were MUCH more relevant for a MUCH longer period of time. So I HIGHLY recommend checking out their stuff from after their debut, most of it really does hold up.

It's a pass. Some people like to throw shade at Sum 41, but they always make me smile and bob my head when I hear them.

@@Angel666xo I'd hear "shallow" "too poppy" "one trick pony", etc. Just the normal music snob critiques.

Always cool to see hip hop dudes go from moving awkwardly to this kind of sound to properly headbanging like a seasoned metalhead🔥🤙

Sum 41 started out as what we would call "pop punk" and made a slight detour into metal. they bounce back and forth between the 2. I can't remember where the rap came from but I've even seen them do this live, and it was amazing.

I am around the same age as these guys and grew up in the town next to where they are from (for those who know the area, they are from Ajax, Ontario and I grew up in Whitby). I was also in a band during high school and we played at a lot of the same venues, and although I never got to play on the same night they did, I caught them live once or twice in their early days. It was very cool to see a band from that scene make it big like they did.

Sum 41 and other bands who were like them, were EVERYWHERE in the late 90's and early 2000's, especially on the soundtracks of coming of age teen movies so yeah, even if you haven't heard them before you probably know the chorus and the sound.

Growing up in jamaica, my family was one of the few with a dish, so I could watch MTV and BET. My mom and I used to love heavy metal, as I do now. But this song, I used to rush home from school to see this on TRL. Back then I didn't have anyone to share that excitement with, but it's cool seeing other people react to it for the first time and kind take myself back.

Great Canadian Punk rock band from the 90's! They had a lot of great hits and were featured in a lot of movies and tv shows.
This is one of those lucky finds where you can do a lot of great reacts and enjoy yourself along the way.
You having only listened to rap growing up just means now you get the opportunity to explore and discover so many more genres and fall in love with. You're expanding your horizons and that sounds fun. I hope you enjoy your journey! :P

As a kid I never really appreciated how different this sounds y'know. Sure there's the pop punk Green Day style stuff in there but there's also that metal influence that they mention and a WHOLE bunch of Beastie Boys in there too and it's actually such a cool blend of stuff.
