I am 62 years old. I've lived through 70's Rock, Disco, Heavy Metal, and my family's influence of 60's music. I discovered BTS when I felt American music had lost that creative authenticity. I loved Led Zepplin, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Yes, Genesis. But the band that resonated with me before BTS was Rush. The Canadian three member Rock group. Their drummer, Neil Peart was a Reader and Writer. He wrote with messages that resonated with him through art and readings...like RM. What makes BTS authentic, like Rush, to me, is their ability to pull from their influences and make it their own, True Artists!! They are talented and love their fans. Rush fans are the same. Before Neil Pert passed away, I never missed an album or a concert. Neil Peart was the most progressive drummer I ever heard. Rush and BTS reveal their music making, their humility and humor and their love and respect for their fans. I think this is what makes them authentic.

I wish my dad was as open as you are. He's in his 60s and loves 70s and 80s rock and roll, especially Canadian rock (April Wine, Trooper, Harlequin, Streetheart). I think he'd appreciate some of BTS's music and them as performers in general, but he won't give them a chance because they don't play instruments (as a band all together) and their music isn't 100% like the music he usually listens to.

I agree wholeheartedly with my fellow ARMY’s over the age of 50. I’m a proud person of 68 years and have loved music of ALL types and genres since I was a child. I’ve seen artists come and go and have my favorites in Rock, R&B, Jazz, Heavy Metal, Country, etc. I am so glad to be alive to see and hear BTS and to be part of global ARMY! I will be with OT7 for the rest of my days! Sending PURPLE LOVE to all ARMY’s!
      💜
Because of BTS I have come to enjoy other K Pop artists such as Mamamoo, Stray Kids, Ateez, Taemin, So!Yoon, TXT, Epik High, Big Bang as well as learning about Korean culture. Music brings us together and the world needs more of this.

65 yo found BTS after Covid Lockdown. I traveled to visit my mother just before talk of the virus began. I wasn’t feeling well and went to a Dr I had previously had. On 01/02/2020 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma, a type that’s terminal. I spiraled down into darkness. I was stuck 1,500 miles from my daughter and family home. I had start chemo here to buy me some time. At first I refused it. One day scrolling on RUclips the music video popped up of LIFE GOES ON. I turned on the CC and here were these guys from half the world away. The lyrics and the music resonated very deeply and made me realize that all of us were struggling and still we have to go on. The song stayed with me and gave me strength. I started listening to more of their music especially at chemo being stuck in a recliner for hours every week. The song SO WHAT by BTS was another song that gave me strength. Well that started me feeling connected and not so isolated especially watching them and their struggles, the hard work and devotion to ARMY. I became army within a couple of months. I adore them. I think they’re very special young men. 💜😉

I am in my early 60s and had honestly given up on music. I was listening to instrumental music. But I was a trained dancer for 10 years in my younger days. So I was searching for dances to watch to relax before bed. First I came across PTD and loved it, but wondered what else they could do with dance. That is when I found Black Swan.
I saw these talented young men with bare feet dancing on stage and another one floating in the air and dancing with the grace of a prima ballerina. I felt at home. I also felt the joy and freedom one knows as a dancer. I always say that Black Swan was when I went down to the ocean floor with them and somehow ended up in the BTS rabbit hole. But I wondered if all K-pop groups were like this. But nothing seemed to match BTS. All the BTS members can dance. They dance as one. They have an incredible musicality and dance from the top of their heads to the bottom of their feet. There are so many examples, but I am thinking of the most recent MV SNTY. And then the beautiful short dance Jimin did to Stuck with You. And how can we forget when AgustD himself surprised us with a Haegeum dance.
I can can keep sighting things like this about their talent. But it is hard to pin down. Why are they so loved? Jimin has asked that a few times “why us”? It would take much longer to break that down. Their sincerity for sure is part of it. But for now I am happy to say they are like Haley’s Comet that we see approximately every 76 years or once in a generation entertainers. I could sense in the Disney Monuments documentary, that they had feared going too close to the sun. I think, like some comets, they were dangerously close to the sun, but they survived all the hardships and are thriving professionally as a group and as solo artists even while in the military.

I have a problem with the singer-songwriter model being the only accepted "authenticity" - especially by white Western critics. Elvis and most of Motown didn't write a note but their interpretation is still artistry!!! That model shouldn't be the bar for all groups. I come from theatre so I get and appreciate collective work. What is different about BTS is yes, authenticity in terms of creative direction and subject matter, but mainly their sincerity and uniqueness. And their kindness and depth as people.

Whenever I need solace, a happy dance, a shoulder to cry on, a feeling of belonging, etc. (you get the gist :), BTS is there for me. Being older (64) is not necessarily easier. They have shown me how to handle challenges with bravery, hard work, humor, and an open heart. To me, they are a success because they are TRULY wonderful human beings. Authenticity is hard to quantify, but you can feel it when it's real, and BTS is the definition of authenticity. Anyone who takes the time to meet them must acknowledge that. I think you're right when you say it's hard to expect other artists to achieve that same level as BTS. It's really very remarkable what they have done, and I think it is a combination of so many factors, but they all come back to these specific seven men. The leadership of RM, the lyrics they all contribute to, the beats, melodies and production they build, the dance, the unique and skillful vocals and raps, the overall commitment to excellence, the genuine love they have for each other and their fans, their openness and humility, their humor… the list goes on and on. But when you watch them talk about their success you can hear in every instance how they each push each other forward, how they inspire each other to grow and learn and work harder. They each see the tremendous skills and talents of the others and feel the need to do as well themselves. It is really the synergy of all seven of them thinking every other member is the best and they must keep giving their all that has led them higher than anyone else. That mutual love and admiration has pulled them through a lot. Seven minus one is zero. It's them. All of them together. That's the secret of their success. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

For me yes BTS are talented singers, songwriters and performers. But their success has come because they combine that with their respect of Army. Just look at other groups, they perform to an audience because they want to, they write songs they want to, they sell what they want. A lot of other artists are happy to take our money, but want nothing else to do with us and often attack if we don’t do /act/support them in the way they want. But BTS genuinely want to create art for us the audience, they want us to enjoy or love it rather than just buy it. And in return we want to listen to the stories they want to tell and are willing to go along with genre changes. For me personally BTS makes Rap and Hip Hop accessible and welcoming as a women I have found a lot of traditional rap and hip hop demeaning and sleazy. (Obviously some exceptions)

Am sorry but what i don't like about KPop Bands is the unnecessary loud noise which BTS has non. And, BTS is daring in evolving for growth.
There is no small role in BTS. All roles or parts are huge. Simplicity is not so simple and that is exactly what BTS is. And, BTS listens to each other while singing even during intense performances to sustain their harmony.
More importantly, I could easily understand BTS' stuff even if they sing and speak in Korean. For other KPop Idols, I could barely get into them.

Their authenticity is everything about who these men are as individuals and together. They sacrifice lots personally and as a group with hard work in everything they did as a group to grow in producing their own music, being themselves, speaking who they are, philanthropic, showing their humbleness, their hardships…they were ordinary people like all of us. Everything about them made them authentic and humble…this is why they are popular. No other group before has ever done this. ❤️❤❤BTS forever!!!

I really hope and wish that the members of BTS watch your videos. You do an amazing job of breaking down and analyzing their work and performance in such a professional, not overly emotional, thought provoking way that I wish they could know and understand what we, their fans, truly see in them. My concern has always been that as their popularity grows…. the “suits” in the music industry around them will just start using them to pump out songs that are not “authentic” to BTS. Jk is the one that concerns me the most as he is immensely talented but I despise 🛴Braun’s managing of his artists…..no real concern other than💰……and I don’t want the corrupt music industry to eat him alive. I think what appeals to me, as a fan most, is BTS’s innocence. They are like dinosaurs in a “only for profit” industry because they appear to put their artistry and heir fans’ needs and wants before the money. It’s like they are the David fighting Goliath…..and along with ARMY…..they are winning😍. For me….I am a BTS only fan….I don’t like kpop in general……I did like GODS by New Jeans….but only after somebody put out an AI version of BTS singing it. Oh…..Mamamoo…those girls have some pipes🔥

I wouldn’t worry about JK with his close to 13 yrs of experience in one of the toughest music industries: K-pop and their fandoms
He knows where he stands and, in a bad case scenario, he has six brothers and BHM behind him.
So, fans’ infantilism isn’t him; remember that his main underlining message in his “7” single debut for ARMY was : “I’m an adult now; and I’ll do what I want. Don’t like it? Too bad”
At the end, SB role on G has been exaggerated to hurt JK’s extraordinary success on his global debut. SB only did some a&r; check credits more closely. all decisions were made by JK and his BHM overall production team.
It boggles the mind how solos/multis/mantis disregard a A MAJOR FACT in JK’s success: he’s the main vocalist of the biggest musical band in the world!!! supported by the biggest and most committed fandom. AND he chose to go MAINSTREAM POP and nailed it to perfection!!
CH 2 is about RESPECT for each member doing their own thing. We were gifted seven indisputable musical creators and Kings. ENJOY!

After twelve years in the cut-throat competition that is Korea's music industry, and after all the dirty tricks and underhanded tactics they've seen both in Korea and the US, they're not lambs for the fleecing. They're very experienced, savvy guys who know the music business very well indeed, good and bad both. They've made it clear that they do it their way, and they have both ARMY and Big Hit at their backs. And don't worry about SB. Im 62 young too, always loved music and heard it up and down, nearly all genres. My last favourite group was Simply Red but at a certain point I had the feeling that a lot of music gets interchangeable and that was it for years. BTS is now my favourite group after a long time first while their music is great, the freshness helped me in the COVID time and the more I dived deeper to it, I found more and more outrageous facts, the older songs, their messages and how they behave together and with their ARMY, all that is outstanding and my journey isn’t over yet, there is so much to discover… thanks a lot for your expert reactions, I appreciate them very much!

I second the motion that you should collect your essays into a book!
I prize artists who write and produce their own songs, but I also admire some who are great interpreters and can communicate the feelings of the work. We often underestimate the talent it takes to connect with an audience.
I've liked so many groups throughout the years, from Steve Miller Band, the BeeGees, Willie Colon, 4-40, Coldplay, The Eagles, etc. I usually fall out of love with them because the members do something that puts me off or the music stops connecting with me. In my life, the only two groups that I've loved long-term are BTS and Take That, and the latter is because of one member since the others have put me off gradually. BTS is the most intimate connection I've ever made with any type of artists.

I found BTS after watching Hwarang. I like one song in there, the contrast between a deep and lighter voice made me look for the singers. I must confense though that the voice a enjoyed the most during the song was Jin, the high notes got me. After that it was a slow process but i finally fall for all of them when i watched Run BTS and In The Soop... there i realized they were more than colleagues, they love each other and that was so endering. Later with every live i confirmed they were authentic, down to earth and grateful young men, they care and respect each other. They cannot show us everything about their lives or all their bad moments but they are honest and form a strong bond with Army.
I care about them, i want them to be happy and hopefully they will be friends and family during their whole lifes.

It's the substance for me... in their songs, their group discussions (especially SUGA's wisdom! That man is far ahead his age), in their artistic direction.. I listen to other groups as well but I really don't like the noisy upbeat sound that most kpop songs have. Totally agree! Very few do the hard work. One group that recently came to my radar is Ateez, their lider is very active in the studio, does a lot of writing, composing and producing. Others in the group do too, Mingi recently did a gorgeous song called Youth about his recently time off/depression problems. They are still growing, but I like the fact that they come from a smaller company, that they’re also Army, (two of them used to be trainees under Hybe and are very close friends with TXT). They also have achieved more success internationally first. I love their personalities, but the music it’s a hit and miss for me sometimes, maybe because I’m not in my 20’s and I love the 80 and 90’s influence that BTS excels at. But it says a lot that Ateez was the only other Kpop group that kept me coming for more since I became Army so many years ago.

As you put it the songs are hit or miss, I find that I prefer their softer side, Turbulence is a favourite of mine and I also really like Mingi's new track. They're talented and hardworking and it seems to me they want to continue to experiment new things and grow their art, that's something I appreciate.

@@crystalsnow1138I think it's probably a little bit different for each fan. We can all say generally that we love the guys and love/appreciate the music, but that's where it splits off into millions of different reasons, specific to each person. And when we compare stories, we find ourselves saying, 'For me it was like this, and for you it was like that- there's a similarity there, because we both ended as fans, but to you, what drew you in was *this* song, under *these* circumstances, and for me it was *that* one, under *those* circumstances.'

I don’t really expect much from other artists, but BTS has won my loyalty. Not only do they contribute greatly to their music, but you can feel the sincerity and emotion in their songs. I have listened to songs without reading the lyrics first, and I could feel the emotion. I would read the lyrics later and that just emphasized my initial emotional reaction. Finding 7 people that are willing to open themselves to those feelings for all to see, are loyal to the members and to their fans, and are genuinely themselves ( while striving to keep down to earth) is so very rare. I think that is why they are so successful.

Through BTS songs I learnt of the challenges they face and I love that they give it back to the haters with cutting-edge play of words. But of course, to discover all that, I need to look at the translation of the lyrics.
So what is it about BTS' songs that got me hooked ? The melody, the beat, the different music genres, the vocalisation, the soulful expression, the diction....the list goes on. All the pieces fall into place, and that is even before watching the mv !!.

I don't follow any female artists apart from listening to a couple of tracks by New Jeans and XG so can't comment on them.
I remember watching Stray Kids on their elimination show and they really reminded me of early BTS, they had pretty good rappers and a fire in their belly. However, as BTS grew older their music also evolved from the school trilogy era to I Need You / HYYH era (2013-2015/6), and I don't feel Stray Kids has had that same growth. Don't come at me Stays! Even now you still have a hyper track with Felix growling in a lead single that sounds similar to previous A sides. But that may be to do with management who want to stick to a format that works and not taking any major risks.
A couple of things stood out in BTS solo era, first Tae on Suchwita. He said that he was feeling bad and a lot of pressure around his own songs so he decided to receive songs. However, we all know how much influence he had over the direction, the production, all the videos and the choreo. He did not write but he was the LEADER of this Layover project.
Secondly JK. He has said in early interviews that he always wanted to 'sing like Bieber' and 'could he carry a solo show himself?' and he proved something to himself with Golden. So I completely understood when he did an all English album, to test those waters and fulfill part of his ambition. We all know JK can write beautifully and produce but asking someone who is not fluent in English to write or even co-write English tracks? That is a bit much to ask. And not forgetting time constraints due to military service!
Sorry for the long comment, but you did ask!!! Love you!!!💜

I'm gonna be real - I'm around the same age as the BTS hyung line but I've never actually thirsted over them (yes, not even during Chapter 2), which is unlike many of the male kpop groups i supported in the past. I'm definitely not in the "Yoongi marry me" camp lols. When i watch them, i just badly wanna hang out with them and have a conversation. Their music always speaks to me, even the less deep ones, because you somehow understand the intent behind their songs. Eg. Dynamite doesn't really do it for me but whenever i hear it, i inadvertently become lighter in step, which i think was the intent to begin with - to just be a feel-good bop during depressing times. This video is right in explaining why many ARMY are so attached to BTS - they don't view them as mannequins/models to be admired and gawked at, but we feel part of their journey. It's not some toxic parasocial relationship, but a symbiotic one where we draw inspiration from BTS and the members also find courage from their fans and share in the same societal struggles.

The only girl group I have come across that I can tolerate is Mamamoo, because they act more mature, and have lovely voices. Most girl groups mystify me with the overly sweet cute little girl styles, even though they are not that young. Even their voices are too cute. BTS were the first Kpop group to actually let the audience/fans in. They actually, as far as, I know, started the trend of talking to their fans through video & other social media, starting with You Tube...and they started providing English subtitles for their videos for their fans to understand their lyrics. Before that, there was this wall up, that fans were not allowed to breech in order to feel closer to their favorite artists. BTS are trend setters, nobody was doing this before them, now everyone is doing it. They also created their own variety & travel shows, since other labels were blocking them from appearing on the mainstream shows back then...just innovative. Let's also talk about the genius ideas to create and hold online concerts for us during covid.

I disagree with you calling their creative contributions to their music "authenticity." A talented singer who isn't a composer or lyricist isn't any less "authentic"-- it's just a different skill set. If I can sing but I can't dance, I'm not any less "authentic" of a singer, I'm just probably not going to become a K-pop idol. If I can't carry a note in a bucket and rely on AutoTune to make me sound good, or if I lipsync all my "live" music to a prerecorded track (note, I'm not talking about backing tracks here, I'm talking about Milli Vanilli), I lack authenticity as a singer.
BTS has the good fortune to not only have *extremely* deep skill sets among the members, but also be incredibly good at them, AND have a broad range of flexibility within those skill sets (for example, as a producer Suga has a talent for both artistic AND commercial production), AND work their butts off They're triple threats, and that's why no one else in the industry can touch their level of success.

I think that being able to see BTS grow is so amazing. I was a casual listener since debut. Dark & Wild was my first comeback as an army. I just found their music relatable and good, and I was born the same year as RM and Jhope. So, hearing the song 2nd grade while I was entering my second year of college, and they were also entering their second year as a group, which made me feel a sense of understanding from BTS. Also, the group was allowed to grow together and as individuals. We can see this in their discography. They used to be very rap heavy in the beginning, and then you can see the transition of their sound as the vocal line got more confident. Some groups don't grow as time goes on or refuses to try new things, which is fine. However, I'm more inclined to groups that incorporate different styles into their songs. That is why i can't really get into stray kids. Yes, they write their own music, but the style of their main tracks is not something I like listening to a lot. I can't get into g-idle music at all, especially their new releases.
As for who has the potential. Lyrically, i think Ateez and Stray Kids has great potential. They have some beautiful lyrics in their b-sides. If they show this in their title tracks consistently then I think more people would connect to their lyrics. Another group is TXT. I know they are not usually seen as self produced as other groups in their gen, but they are already really expressive performers and they also contribute to the lyrics too. I think TXT stands out more because they are not heavily focused on rap like other self produced boy groups and have a more pop/rock sound. I dont think we will get "another BTS" from these groups in terms of sucess, but these groups have great potential for longevity in the kpop industry.

Bts will always be my 7 kings in every way, but i think Ateez is a 4th gen group (best in 4th gen) that is in some aspects kinda relatable to BTS, they work hard and bringing a message to the world, their stage performance is amazing and they love their fandom very much...they also coming from a small company, writing their own lyrics, having a story behind the group, the music is obviously not the same sound but each song has a story related to the members/group. Ateez is an underrated group for my opinion. My daughter is an Atiny so i automatically follow Ateez content and i do love them so much after my kings of course. For girl groups it's definitely (G)-Idle but again very much underrated. But nothing can top BTS for me..once an Army always an Army! Thank you for this video i love like you explane everything. Lots of love from Belgium💜💜

I think the fact that BTS was conceptualized as a hip hop group, not an idol group has a lot to do with their success. Hip hop is all about authenticity. From the start, Bang PD wanted young artists with real musical talent who could share their stories, not just pretty faces who can dance well. Had they been an idol group from the beginning, I don't think namjoon, yoongi and maybe even hobi would have joined. The vocal line are obviously very important as well, but the rap line are the heart and soul of BTS, They give the group their unique artistic identity. Without them, BTS would just be another run-of-the-mill idol group.

The groups that i like and respect are Maneskin, The Rose and TXT. I don't love them as much as I love BTS, but their music and the way they talk in their interviews makes me appreciate them as artists

Love your videos, your analysis to the diferent topics is so great and of course well articulated that help us -at least me- to understand and appreciate the work of Bangtan. Congratulations for your 25k and my best wishes for you to keep growing. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

    and ARASHI since 2015
and of course BTS turning two years as a fan next month 030324.
if you noticed the band I mention and love so much they have the same work ethic, brotherhood, authenticity and love for their fans. I also have a rule of stan ONLY ONE GROUP PER COUNTRY.

HYBE's strategy for BTS doesn't seem like used for other groups under the company!! HYBE wasn't interested in giving the members individual brand deals! Nowadays kpop is mostly about fashion which I find is so disturbing! BTS members weren't interested in brand deals until they went on a hiatus and solo era! They did have enough time to use their time and work on music, doing promotions etc!! They weren't distracted by other things!! Everything went increasingly well with BTS!

Thanks for this essay. I'm always trying to figure out why they are authentic and this really helps. Also, back when you were reviewing their book, you said you were going to do a video on your days as an original ARMY. I'd love to hear more of your anecdotes. Next month is my second ARMYversary, so I live vicariously though people's early experiences as ARMY. Please think about doing this.

Enhypen and &Team right now I would say they may not become the Next BTS ( no such things as the next BTS) but They can get there. They are working hard. and they have story to tell individually and as a Group....

They're artistry & Lyricism is top tier, but of course I still prefer BTS best

I've been getting into DPR Ian lately as well and think he belongs on that list. Not only does he spit substance, write, produce and compose his music, dance and sing, but he is also a videographer, editor and does effects so he makes his own MVs - which are often an Alice in Wonderland on Acid trip to "The Other Side" as he explores his complex and serious mental health issues.

Very well said..i don't think there is any other group that can be like BTS...there is only one BTS..There is not going to be another BTS.
I found them may be 4 years ago, after that i never looked back.
When some songs goes viral through ticktok or shorts from other groups, i do look them up, once or twice i do listen to that, after its kind of forgotten, never gets into my playlist, but BTS songs is my solas.
Another one is The Rose, they are also my favourites.they also got some genuine songs.

Aside from BTS my next favorite group named THE ROSE. They’re Korean Indie Pop Rock band. Very under rated, very talented 4 guys. Writes their own songs and video. I watched them on live and they are amazing you should check them out. Woosung used to collaborate with Suga. And he has this mesmerizing voice and talent. 💕💕

I hate to correct you, but for me, "Thriller" was "MJ"s" prophecy video of what the industry was going to do to him in the future. I grew up listening to the "Jackson 5".
BTS are original, and Big Hit allowed us to get to know them as they grew as artists.
I also love StrayKids, Ateez, A.C.E. and TAN.
